Very cool coffee shop that's family owned. Love it. They try to make it a place of community and keep it old school- the cash register is classic! Small shop but the BEST COFFEE in all of East Village. I started two of my mornings in the city with their iced black coffee which did not disappoint. Coffee is strong, but so smooth. Go here. I loved this place when it was a tiny little shop across the street and I still love this shop. This place has one of the best lattes I've ever had and now that I've moved on from lattes, I'd say it's one of the few places that does espresso drinks right. It's not like a watered down sugary "espresso" beverage that you would find in starbucks. You can actually taste the espresso flavor while enjoying the milk that comes with it. Today I decided to go here, forgot they moved across the street (with gates) I'm writing this review because there was so much sass among the barista. He gave me the weirdest primitive look yesterday. Few places deserve 5 stars on the first visit, but Abraco is one of them. I was somewhat grumpy as I was coerced into walking 11 blocks to get my first coffee of the morning. To my surprise, the tiny cafe was packed by time we got there a little before 11am on a Saturday. There's no seating and you're lucky if you can get a standing spot near the coffee bar/window. I had a cappuccino, egg sandwich and olive oil cake. I grew up in a family of coffee lovers and Abraco's cappuccino may have been one of the best I've ever had in the city. My egg sandwich was satisfying, but I wish it had been heated up. The olive oil cake, however, was the other stand out. It was perfectly moist and soft with a slightly crunchy and crumbling exterior. There are only two staff members, but they're pretty efficient, friendly and clearly passionate about what they do. I'll be sure to come back! read more

I was coffee shop hopping in east village when I found this place thanks to Yelp. I would probably have missed it as it's a bit hidden a few steps down from the street. So glad I found it! The space is open and big, awesome jazz music and not crammed like most coffee shops these days. and thank god for the laptop free rule, you can finally just enjoy the coffee shop atmosphere instead of looking at 20 people who are staying into their laptops. Coffee - so good! I had an americano and I tried their hazelnut cake. Yummy! They also have drip coffee. As close to a hole-in-the-wall as you can get but still walk in, this tiny coffee joint does regular take-out business (you'll probably spot it with the line out the door). There's a streetside bench, a glorified armrest, and a window sill if you insist on having it there. There are some baked treats on offer. If the olive oil and pistachio cardamom cakes are any indication, they're fine if you must eat something with your coffee, but unremarkable and I doubt I'll get it again. Not so with the coffee. I went here on a Saturday about an hour before they closed and there was a short line out the door (which doesn't say much since it's a tiny space). The service was fine and the music on their stereo was funky jazz, which I liked. The highlight of my visit was the cured olive cookie, which was twice the size I expected and tasted like Christmas shortbread, but with a saltiness from the olive that went surprisingly well with the sweetness. I was in search of some legit coffee during my last trip to NYC. I pulled up Yelp and Abraco popped up with its almost impeccable reviews. I entered wanting to try their pour-over coffee since I've never had it before but was too tempted to get a cappuccino. The cap definitely lived up to the great reviews. I also tried their olive oil cake which went very well with the coffee. The interior is VERY small and they have a small area (a wooden table and stool) for those who want to have a quick chat outside. Not the cafes I'm used to in California with lots of room for patrons to enjoy their coffee and people watch or chat. I couldn't complain because the coffee was that amazing and I found enough space to enjoy my cap and cake. From what I saw, I think this place is run by a couple (with a darling little baby!) They were very friendly and take their craft seriously. Before leaving, I couldn't help and get their pour over coffee. It was done great but I don't think the pour over method is my favorite. The coffee is good, but they clearly took notes on the Soup Nazi. They only carry whole milk, for example, a good sign that what you want is irrelevant. The pastries taste good, but don't count on getting that thing you liked, because they seem to have a random array from day to day. The service is unwaveringly curt with a healthy dose of, What're you new here? I mean, look, there's a coffee shop a block in any direction. I had this coffee shop bookmarked for a long time and was excited to try it for the first time. This is my first Yelp review, because I've never before felt so strongly about a food place that I felt compelled to review it. This is an unfortunate exception. The incredibly rude, verbally violent response that the owner, Jaime, gave me and my friend was absolutely uncalled for. We bought coffee and sat down, prepared to drink coffee with some bagels we had brought in from outside to have a nice breakfast. There are no signs that say you cannot eat outside food - we had no idea. But the first thing the owner did without warning was come from behind us, and yell and curse at us angrily. Shaken, we put the bagels back into the bag. We sat for a while, uncertain what to do, because I get really shaky and light-headed when I drink coffee without food. After sipping some more of our coffee drinks, we tentatively pulled the bagels out of the bag again and put them in front of us. We didn't start eating them, still feeling uneasy about that previous yelling, but didn't know what to do because we still had all this coffee to finish that we couldn't take with us (because they were in nice glass cups) to eat our food outside of the shop. [We were certainly not trying to be bad customers - I even brought my laptop with the intention of doing work, but seeing that no laptops were allowed, I scratched that plan.] Immediately, the owner stormed over, grabbed both our coffee drinks from our table, spilling them on the table and splashing us with drops of latte, and dumped them at the counter. He was screaming at us, "GET OUT. Never show your faces here again. I know your faces. You're banned from here forever." (not that we ever would come back, so that was quite a useless display of power). Then he threw $7 at us, threw my friend's bagel outside, and left. His staff then told us again that we needed to leave, with no apology, as if this kind of behavior is acceptable. In short, if we were white men, instead of Asian women, this likely would have not occurred.
