Been dreaming of the matcha banana latte with a banana cream top and I finally got to try it. So worth the $9. The cream top tastes like banana ice cream and it compliments the matcha perfectly. I got mine with oat milk and less sweet. It was PERFECT! My partner got the banana coffee latte, he loved it. The line can be long, so be prepared to be patient. Once you order the drinks come out fast though! Lots of patio seating and nice palm trees in front. Inside has a little bench and a couple of bar stools. My friend is a fan of Academic Coffee. Whenever we talk about matcha, he mentions the banana matcha at Academic. I'm rarely in SJ, so when the opportunity arose, I asked my companion if we could go. The cafe is a standalone. It's easy to pass up, but you'll see a line of people or groups congregated outside. They have seating areas where you can sit or work, primarily outside. Inside is super chill; there's only a bench to sit on and some barstools. With their popularity, their system works like this: line up, order, receive your wait time, get a text when your drink is ready, and grab and go. I was told it would take 15 minutes, but I got my drink in 10. Everyone working was friendly, and the turnaround is relatively quick. Parking is challenging; there are limited spots available, and many cars are waiting in line. I got the Guava Matcha with Guava Cream and Oat Milk. The guava cream was so thick, a nice touch of guava and li hing, and oh so creamy! The matcha, on the other hand, was just okay. It was pretty mild and not earthy, which I prefer. Without the cream, I'd be disappointed, but the cream definitely overpowered the drink. The drink was pretty pricey, so I if I'd order it again. I'm happy to have finally tried Academic Coffee! Very cool new spot next to valley fair with a nice park/apartment complex next to it. There is always a line (it's how you know the coffee will be good) but it does down pretty quick. Very well known for their banana lattes but I've had a few things here and they were all delicious! Here is what we got this time: 1. Everything Croissant with green onion cream cheese (9/10) which was really delicious! Buttery croissant with really good cream cheese inside. It comes with no meat so if this is a deal breaker, don't get this. Really solid. 2. Espresso Banana Latte (10/10) this is my go to! So delicious! If you're new here, I highly recommend his as it's always so consistently good! 3. Piloncillo Latte (10/10) this was my fiancés rating as she loved this one! I would give it a solid 8/10 because it wasn't my fav. It has a strong caramel flavor as well as like a brown sugar but I can see people LOVING this if that's your gig. Yay I am so glad that academic coffee opened up a location right across from Valley fair Mall. This location is newer, but they brought back the guava Matcha and everyone is very excited. It definitely lived up to the high. I recommend getting the one with the cold foam on top. I also tried the corn, scone and blueberry cinnamon muffin, which were nothing to write home about they were all right, but don't seem like anything special. There is limited parking behind the restaurant. We can also park anywhere on the street next to the shop. This review is purely based on their seasonal drinks. I've tried the guava matcha latte, pumpkin spice latte, and pumpkin hojicha latte and they were all delicious! The guava matcha reminded me of the Porto's guava pastry, but in a liquid form (in a good way). The guava flavor was strong, and the foam was thick and creamy. It does overpower the matcha a bit, but I would get this again if it ever makes a reappearance. It is quite a decadent drink. The pumpkin spice latte is one of the better PSL I've had, and would strongly recommend if you're a PSL fan. The hojicha pumpkin latte is great as well, with a strong hojicha flavor while still being able to taste the pumpkin flavor, but I found the hojicha a bit too grainy for my liking. Overall, you can't go wrong with any of these three drinks! There is very little parking; there's about six spots in the back, so you're better off parking at Valley Fair or the bank across the street and walking over. I went on an early weekend morning once and was able to snag a spot in the back, so if you go early enough, you might be lucky. Seating wise, it's mainly outdoor seating, so this wouldn't be an ideal spot to study if you need an outlet. read more

I will start by saying drinks were fine. Matcha was strong and good. But it wasn't special enough compared to the multitude of other matcha places that have popped up. We see this on Yelp, looks like it checks all the boxes! drive over, and see this super cute building next to the community garden. Then we walk in, and they don't seem that excited or friendly when compared to other coffee shops. It's a slow day so we were the only customers not already sitting. Not a huge negative, but then we ask for the pastry warmed up and they say there is no oven. We look for WiFi and they basically stand back ignoring us until we find it ourselves. Then the wifi doesn't work, the seating area was cut off by a giant divider wall compared to help reviews so we had to sit at the bar. Our pastries were nothing special and cold??? We saw a elderly lady drop their pastry right outside the door while we held it open for her, and I was hoping a staff came to help, but nope, she had to toss her pastry and keep going sadly. Overall bad experience as an aggregate and we ended up driving to voyager instead. I am only posting this since this place has SO much potential. They have a nice drink menu, good pastry case. just buy a toaster, fix your wifi, and maybe have a slightly more proactive staff especially when it's not busy. read more

I stopped by to try this location of Academic Coffee which is super close to the Valley Fair mall. Parking is pretty limited and tight in the lot, so you may need to wait a bit for a spot to open up. I've had their matcha drinks at other locations and it was pretty enjoyable, so I wanted to try their coffee this time around. I ordered an iced Madagascar Vanilla Latte with oat milk. I also picked up an everything croissant with green onion cream cheese to pair with my coffee. Although there's not a lot of seating area inside, the outdoor patio has a bunch of seats/tables, so you can relax while drinking your coffee and eating your pastries. I liked my latte, the vanilla flavor is definitely present and it felt rich and creamy with the oat milk. The croissant was good too, very flaky and crispy; although I do wish that there was a thicker layer of cream cheese inside. This place is known for its matcha cream lattes which are probably their best items on the menu! The very first time I came here it was later in the afternoon so they were sold out of their matcha cream items already :( so the next time I came right when they opened at 7am and was able to get the items I wanted. You can substitute the milk option too at no extra charge. The parking lot is limited, only 5-6 spots behind the cafe, and you can try parking on the street too but overall still pretty limited for parking especially if you come during the day or weekends. Easily missed, I've driven by over a dozen times since their opening in early 2025 and never noticed it. We got lucky with finding street parking steps away (apparently parking is rough) and there were only 5-6 people in line. After ordering, the line stretched around the corner. No online orders. D R I N K S * Hōjicha Banana Cream Latte ($8.50) - Sub oat milk (+ 50 cents) Not sure what brand of hōjicha they use but it tasted like watery chocolate milk. I prefer hōjicha with a roasty, nutty flavor profile. I like the creamy, frothy texture of the banana cream but it low key tasted like laffy taffy. Off batch? * Double Guava Matcha Latte ($11) - Sub oat milk (+ 50 cents) The Double Guava Matcha Latte is advertised as three distinct layers - a fresh layer of housemade guava syrup, layered with matcha latte, topped with a guava cream and sprinkled with li hing powder. For nearly the price of a cocktail, it was kinda a letdown. My Double Guava didn't have a layer of guava syrup so I checked with the barista if I received the correct one. She said, I did. The guava cream was bomb - airy, rich with a velvety texture. It was sweet and tropical with the li hing (dried plum) giving a salty sweet tang. Unfortunately, the premium culinary grade matcha they use wasn't my jam (too mild). I prefer a deep vegetal, earthy flavor and this wasn't it. Since we received our drinks quickly, I don't think they handwhisk their matcha to order. * Piloncillo Latte ($6.50) I like the burnt caramel flavor that wasn't too sweet but it tasted so watered down. Def needed an extra shot or two of espresso. It gets good traffic despite having the worst parking. Located on what used to be UC Extensions Ag research station they've been able to turn it into a cute small park. The Wifi and bathrooms aren't public. I think you have to ask for the code. They don't have an oven for heating their pastries. Wish they had a tip jar for fund raising for one. They don't take cash. I ordered the iced Hojicha Banana Latte $8.5, Mushroom Tart $7, and the Crispbay Korean Kalbi chips $15 (yes, quite expensive). Lines continued out the door. I asked the cashier to heat up my mushroom tart, but she said toaster wasn't working, so she didn't heat it up for me. When I got my order, I walked out looking forward to dining in since I have a foot pain today and guess what? Indoor cafe dining area was closed due to renovations or expansion of kitchen. Note was tiny on the outside windows. I really wanted to sit down and enjoy the cafe moment during this visit, but didn't get to. Still wondering why I tipped them. Hojicha was tasteless, more watery than expected. Banana latte itself was ok/light in banana flavor. Mushroom tart being cold was a bad idea. It was my first time eating cold mushroom tart at any cafe/coffee shop/bakery. I didn't feel it's right. The bag of Korean Kalbi chips which I paid $15 for was not worth it. Dry chips. Felt like kids food kitchen project. It was salty for sure. New and different. You can actually make better beef jerky chips at home if you tried. This bag was more of an experimental taste for me. Yes, I do foodie surveys too. Maybe it's just today, but while people were enjoying their cafe gatherings outdoors, I didn't feel the usual cafe experience here as I normally would at other places. Soo I've been to Academic about 3x now? Vibe is chill, especially the outdoor seating with the spacious lawn. I would've preferred almond over oat, but that's okay! The regular matcha latte was good, but I wish I got double matcha. The oat milk overpowered the matcha taste for me. We've ordered the banana cream matcha and Madagascar vanilla latte. First time trying banana cream matcha and it was so good! The banana cream top is delicious and pairs well with the strong matcha. Madagascar vanilla latte half sweet was delicious and the coffee was perfect. There's outdoor seating as well, but is a bit difficult to get parking. Definitely recommend this spot :) read more

Once again I do not like the seasonal matcha drink. I think I'll stick to their regular, plain matcha from now on. The pistakio foam is too subtle in my opinion; I expected stronger pistachio flavor, but can only taste a hint of it. read more

I love Academic for their Melon Matcha and I don't even mind waiting in a line for it if I'm just having a day out. However, the parking here is pretty terrible and unfortunately this location does not have the space to accommodate the demand. There are only 4-6 spots and they're always full. Street parking is also always taken. So I think most people park in the lot two strip malls away, which, let's be honest, is a pain and could be at risk for a tow (especially when you're waiting 45+ minutes). I also tried their coffee and unfortunately, it fell short. Definitely stick with the matcha -- if you don't mind waiting 45 minutes (25 min line minimum and 20 minutes for the drink) and parking pretty far. read more

This is a "go to" where my daughter is concerned when she comes to visit the South Bay. I can totally see why! My latest obsession has been drinking iced/frozen hot chocolate's and OMG, this place has definitely made the top of my list. The quality of the Guava Matcha Latte was so good too and refreshing! Finally able to try out their guava matcha latte! Worth the hype and is only available Thursday to Sunday or till sold out. Guava cream has textures similar to guava. A bit grainy and has the real guava flavor. Topped with Li Hing powder which reminds me of Hawaii. Tasty drink and good matcha. Does lean heavier on guava flavor when mixed. Place is being remodeled so the big seating area is closed and only outside seating available. Short line on Thursday morning and took about 10-15 mins for 2 guava matcha latte. read more

The banana cream matcha was good but I wouldn't say I'm obsessed. The banana cream had great banana flavor, the cookie crumble on top was yummy, the matcha was ok. It's worth trying just once since it's so expensive, $8.50! I'm curious to try the other less expensive drinks. I think they're remodeling their indoor seating area so all the seating is outdoors. There's actually a lot of outdoor seating and there are some umbrellas. The staff was very nice and my drink came out quickly. No wait on a weekday afternoon. read more

I've tried this place a couple of times! Their parking lot is small if you're able to find a spot. Do not park in the area by the apartment. There is someone watching and you might get ticketed. I usually park down the street and there is plenty of parking. Whenever I've gone, there's usually a 15-20 minute wait but it goes pretty fast. Plenty of seating on the outside as well. -banana matcha: 5/5, Classic drink with great banana foam at the top. It works so well with the matcha. Def top tier. -guava matcha: 3.5/5, I think this is a special drink for the summer I didn't like it as much as I thought. The guava was more tangy than sweet which threw me off.
