I did a search for locksmiths because I needed the locks re-keyed in the home I just purchased. I messaged a few that were rated well. Ran at affordable locksmiths said they could re-key 4 cylinders (locks) for $150. I accepted and asked them to come out the next day at 1pm. The next day at 1:10pm no one had shown up or called. So I called and they said the technician was running late and would 2pm work. I said ok. I also asked that the tech call me 20 minutes before he arrived. This way I could keep on moving things to the new house. The guy called me at 3:30 and said he'd be there in 15 minutes. I got in the Uhaul truck I rented and drove to my new house. When I was 5 minutes away the guy called and said he was at the house. I told him I'd be there in 5 minutes. 2 minutes later he called and said he could reschedule for another time if I couldn't get there. This was after they forgot about my appointment and then came an hour and 45 minutes after they said they would arrive. I got there a minute later and the guy started working. I asked him if he could change 3 internal locks in addition to the 4 external locks. I told him Ran had said $150 for 4 cylinders. He first told me $350 for 7 locks. That's more than twice what Ran had told me. He said $150 came to about $38 per lock. He did the math and said that would be $296. I didn't do the math in my head correctly so I agreed. He was using the calculator on his phone. It should have been $256 plus $30 for two locks that couldn't be re-keyed and had to be replaced - so $286. Then I couldn't find the key for one lock so that was another $15 to replace. So $311 when it should have been $301. Then I asked if he would honor the 20% coupon for new home owners -- I had just bought the house, which is empty so it's pretty clear I just bought it. He said he had already skipped the service charge so he couldn't deduct 20%. Ran had never mentioned a service charge so that didn't make any sense. I didn't push it because I wanted the locks re-keyed. He did re-key the locks and replace 3 locks that couldn't be re-keyed. He used Defiant locks, which I looked up and are pretty low quality. I read up more on locks and found out that there are three grades of security for door locks. Grade 3 is the least secure. Grade 2 is better and Grade 1 is the best. You can purchase multiple locks that are same-keyed (they all use the same key). I don't trust the Defiant brand that the tech installed. So before using Affordable Locksmiths, I would make sure you have plenty of time because they may forget your appointment or be very late. I would also clarify all charges before hand. I thought I had but when the tech came he wanted to charge a lot more. Also, he made an etching of my credit card using his receipt paper. I'm not sure why that is necessary and I wouldn't let him do so if I could do it over again. All in all I would choose another locksmith. read more

Avoid at all costs!! This company is a complete scam. The technician showed up an hour late. The fee ended up being $100 more than was quoted over the phone -- after the technician said my lock was standard and would be easy to unlock. The lady over the phone who gave me the initial quote hung up on me when I asked for clarification. After the job- the technician tried to text message my credit card information as I paid my bill and then laughed when I told him to delete it and speak to the person on the phone on loud speaker. The locksmith, Elian, was late by 45-50 minutes, but he did call me beforehand to mention he would be late. Stay Away! I called this company to inquire about the prices. They were too expensive so I told them "no thanks". The next day the sent out a tech to the address we talked about but home owner told them another company had done the work. Affordable yelled at the homeowner and at me and told them the police would get involved to get their trip charge. They are very very rude. The owner (the person who came to make my keys) was rude he came late after 9pm and the he didn't specify the price for my two cars so I ended up paying $260 for two cars older than 10 years. His exact words "I'll give it to you for $130 since you have two cars" I would never ever ever ever refer anyone to this place. I had multiple family members who wanted to get their car keys made, but I told them to look elsewhere. He did nothing. He threw my keys on the chair after he was done. The only person that was nice Natalie. Please save your money and try another place. You can surely get better prices and more friendlier service by looking elsewhere. read more

After locking myself out bringing in groceries I called the main line during business hours and was told a lock smith would be on the way soon. After waiting for an hour an a half I was then charged "after hours" rates because it was after business hours by the time they arrived. Ended up having to pay $250 for a simple door nob to be unlocked. Now the door nob is broken along with a shattered door frame. Maybe try a different locksmith. read more

My experience is similar to that of Daniel B. I was locked out of my hose late at night. The locksmith came out and told me it would be a very difficult lock and so would cost $258. He then proceeded to open the door in less than 5 minutes but still charged $258, plus tax; an exorbitant fee.Also note that you might get Affordable Locksmiths of Fairfax even though you call someone else. In our case, the call was made to 24/7 Locksmith, which apparently refers cases out to other locksmiths. read more

Found this company on Yelp and had them come to my dad's place to help unlock an interior door that my niece accidentally locked. It was a non urgent issue but they were very responsive and could have been there same day. I unfortunately missed their call the first time and to their credit they tried to reach out a few times. We scheduled a time the next day which they were prompt with their arrival and unlocked the door in seconds. I wasn't there to make sure everything went as planned and unfortunately my dad was overcharged what was originally quoted to me via Yelp message because of a communication error. Again, to the owner's credit when I reached out to him about the difference in payment he responded within minutes and resolved the issue quickly. I was impressed by the speediness of response from the owner throughout the process and very pleased with how quickly the issues were resolved. It's one thing to know that things go according to plan but it's just as valuable to know this is a company that will provide excellent customer service if something goes wrong. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! I requested a locksmith to be sent to my townhouse for an emergency because my nanny got locked out of the house leaving my 1 year old son inside unattended. I first called at 4:00 pm and was told that the locksmith would be out in 20-25 mins and that he would call my nanny when he was arriving. At 4:40 pm I called my nanny and was informed that she had still not been contacted, so assuming that the locksmith was stuck in traffic I waited another 10 mins. At 4:50 pm I called the main line again to see where the locksmith was. I was told that he was in route and he should be there soon. At 5:00 pm my nanny called me because she had just spoke with the locksmith who told her he had just been contacted about the job and would be there in 20-25 mins. At this, I immediately called the main line back and asked why it took them an hour after my initial call to contact the locksmith. I was told that the locksmith was incorrect and they had contacted him when I originally called at 4:00 pm. Finally at 5:15 pm I called the locksmith to see how far out he was and was told again that he is still 20-25 mins. At this point I told him not to come and immediately called the main line and cancelled the job. I was forced to call 911 to have the fire department come out and open our door because it had been over 1.5 hours and my son was still inside unattended (thankfully he was napping). I was told that it would only take 20-25 mins to have a locksmith respond to my request and it ended up taking almost 2 hours before a locksmith could come out. It is truly appalling to know that this company shows little to no regard or urgency when responding to a request for emergency service. On top of that, I was obviously being lied to by either the operator or the locksmith which is completely unacceptable and shows a complete mismanagement of the employees. I was locked out of my car on a Sunday morning. I called Affordable Locksmiths, which advertised in my local yellow pages. I asked about pricing and all the person on the phone would tell me is that they charged $15 just to go to your car and that the total fee would be determined by the locksmith when he got there. The locksmith arrived in 1/2 an hour, which I felt was prompt. He used a metal rod wedged in the door to open my car, which took 10 minutes. I was shocked when he then charged me $195.00 for the service, which required no parts and only 10 minutes of labor. I asked him to explain the charge and he mumbled something about it being a Sunday. However, the yellow pages ad for the company expressly states that they do not charge extra on weekends. I would be wary about using this company again because I feel that their pricing is not at all transparent and they do not bill based upon time but upon whatever they think the circumstances will warrant. read more

This company is deceptive. I highly recommend that you use an alternate locksmith company that has greater transparency and honesty in pricing. I called this company two times in advance of my appointment to confirm a price range for my requested service (mailbox lock replacement). BOTH times I was quoted the following: $15 service charge + lock replacement fee starting at $39. I was concerned that the price would be much higher at the time of service since they could only tell me their minimum over the phone, so I requested an estimated price RANGE. The representative over the phone couldn't give me an exact range but reassured me that for this type of lock (mailbox) I can expect to pay not too much over the price she quoted me. To my surprise, I was charged a total of ONE HUNDRED dollars, and this was after asking the technician to reduce the price (which was supposed to be more). When I voiced my complaints to the technician re: the price difference, he stated that he understood my frustration but that there was nothing they could do. The technician called the same representative who misquoted me and confirmed that she said I could expect to pay "around $39, plus a service charge of $15). She was unapologetic and insisted that I pay the $100 charge. The tech informed me that her quote was based on incorrect information since the lock itself was $85. I'm not sure how the representative couldn't have known that, but I'm assuming she purposely gave me the cheapest quote to solicit my business. Also, it's worth noting that the tech arrived over an hour past my appointment time--I had to call 2x within my appointment window to find out his ETA. I accidentally locked my keys in my car cleaning snow and ice off my car. Called affordable locksmith because they were the first name in the phone book. When the person answer the phone took my address and when I asked for an estimate cost he told me they would give to me when they showed up. I waited and waited and an hour later they finally came. The employee showed up in his personal car and pulled out a blood pressure cuff and long bar. Less then 5 minutes later he rolled down my window and unlocked my door. I then asked what the cost since he did it so fast. He then tells me he will check. He gets on his phone calls the office? Then tells me $169.00. I was shocked. I had to pay because they did the job. I asked why it took so long to come and if they are local. The employee tell me yes there an office in Gaithersburg that is 30 if not more away from me in Frederick MD. If they had told me the price or how long it would have taken to get to me i would have tried the 4 other locksmith that are located in Frederick city. I was not happy. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I'm sorry that I didnt read the reveiws before I used them because it seems that it was more of the same. Once they arrived they would not give me all of my options leading me to believe I had to replace the locsk when in fact I could have gotten them re-keyed it seems nor would he give me a quote or even an estimate although I asked twice once when he started and again as he was half way through the work. Steer clear! We were locked out of our vehicle yesterday evening so we called several locksmiths in the area and Affordable Locksmiths being one of them since they "had a guy in the area." They quoted us a $15 service charge to come out to our house. Once the guy got here, he looked at our car, went back to his car and came back with a $235 price!!!! $25 Service Charge (even though we were told $15), $50 after hours call since it was after 5pm (even though they advertise Open 24 hours), and $160 Lockout service (to unlock the car)!!!! At which time, I said "heck no" yeah I said "heck"...not! Anyway, we had another company quote us $90 over the phone and that's what I told him! So, he said "let me call the office" After a brief phone call he came back and said...."Ok, we can do it for $90!!!" The ONLY reason I gave them 2 stars is because they came quick and was able to unlock the vehicle! Shady practice...if you could do it for $90 why quote someone $235!!!
