1/2 - Good tacos, service needs work While on a business trip with two coworkers, we stopped in at Agave & Rye for a quick lunch. It wasn't our first choice, but it ended up being a decent find--especially if you're in the mood for creative tacos. We arrived well after the lunch rush and there were only a handful of patrons in the restaurant, so it was fairly quiet. We ordered chips and salsa to start, but unfortunately they never made it to the table. When our food arrived and I asked about them, our waitress admitted she had forgotten to write it down. The food also seemed to take a bit longer than expected considering the restaurant wasn't busy. Because of that, the service was a little underwhelming. That said, the tacos themselves were the highlight of the visit. I ordered three of the smaller tacos, but they packed a lot of flavor. My picks were The Yoda, The Love Shack, and The Filthy Fajita--all creative and really well done. Small in size, but definitely big on flavor. Overall, the food was solid, but the service could use some improvement. I will start with the positive. The food and the drinks were very good. Where there is room for improvement is the service and decor/ambiance. We started with bee sting and OG margaritas and they were both very good. We ordered food and it took over an hour to get the food and one order was wrong and the other order included a taco that they were out of. We were surprised to see Agave & Rye took over the space where our favorite restaurant, Paladar, was located. We loved Paladar so much and quit going after COVID. We try different Mexican restaurants and still have not found one we love until now. Agave & Rye decor is beautiful with colorful murals on the walls, chandeliers throughout the restaurant and statues everywhere. The restaurant and staff are very welcoming and because we got there before 5 pm there was no wait and we enjoyed the Happy Hour plus Taco Tuesday Specials. They do offer other Daily Specials that we plan to come back for. The drink menu is extensive with lots of exotic drinks with and without alcohol. We started with the pick 3 dips and chips which consisted of guac, queso and medium spicy salsa. The chips were freshly made and very crunchy and the dips were all made fresh and delicious. There was also a pick 3 taco, a single taco option or make your own taco. We did a pick 3 and 2 single tacos. You can order tacos with a "Love Cushion" which we found out was a soft and hard taco with guac, queso or other filling in between. We decided on The Bees Knees chicken taco, The Alderman a carne asada steak taco and The Happy Pappy pork carnita taco. All the tacos were filled with meat, veggies, rice, cheese and "Cowboy Candy" which was pickled jalapeños. I tried the OG margarita made fresh and served in a skeleton glass. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert but will definitely be trying the Tiramisu Tres Leches Cake drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauce....Yum! Obviously, I ordered tacos! Got the Kung Pao chicken tacos which were surprisingly good. I wanted to try something a little different than a typical taco, and this was definitely that! The chicken was tender and flavorful, the double shell was a great touch since it gave the crisp needed in a taco but also the outer flour tortilla complimented that very well. I also ordered a side of mac n cheese and it was nice and creamy but the flavor wasn't up to my standards. It had a nice little kick to it but other than that, it was lacking a bit. We had a group of about 7-8 people so we had two servers helping us. They were great! Made some suggestions and explained the lengthy menu to us. The decor is interesting, bordering on risqué but not vulgar. A modern art vibe with classic lighting and vibrant colors. Really cool vibe. I was visiting Cleveland and discovered this spot near the hotel I was staying at (see Aloft Cleveland Beachwood) while looking for takeout. I ordered at 9:45pm and received my food at 10:15pm. I ordered the Alderman's Escort Taco, the OG Corn Fritters, and the Egg Fried Rice. Starting strong with the Taco, it was beautifully made, filled with the perfect amount to make each bite feel like a full bite. I will say, if you don't like spicy, I would avoid this taco, the Spicy Chile de Arbol Salsa definitely lives up to the name. However, if you are a spicy person, I highly recommend trying this taco! The heat complimented the flavors seamlessly. 5/5 Next up is the OG Corn Fritters with Serrano Aioli. I'm a huge corn fritter fan and will typically order them whenever I see them on a menu, so I'm happy to say I was not disappointed with these. They were fried to perfection and had great flavor. The Serrano Aioli paired perfectly with the fritters, the heat from the aioli added an incredible layer to the snack. 5/5 As much as I'd loved to say I enjoyed everything I ordered, the Egg Fried Rice left much to be desired. Walked in at 6 pm on a Monday during taco week and there was only one other table occupied. Should've known better but the vibe/look of the place was cool and I've heard good things so we decided to stay. Service was good and we didn't feel rushed but the food was way below average. Brussels were burnt and bland. The asian cauliflower actually had great texture but was also so bland. For the tacos we tried a variety.. the chicken taco was just ok but had cowboy candy on it which was good but everything else was sub par. The pulled pork taco had burnt fried onions on top and was literally dripping in grease and the birria taco was about 1/4 filled with actual meat. Hardly any customers on a Valentine's evening, not surprising. The wait staff, in particular one of the only males there was extremely rude to my college aged daughter and her boyfriend. When they arrived the hostess had food in her mouth as she greeted them. Do they not get breaks? 15 minutes for water. 45 minutes for the food to arrive. For an empty restaurant, it's a little surprising, especially when you see more than five waiters running around empty tables. When it came time to pay, she tried to use a gift card that was good for anywhere in the USA. The male waiter raised his voice at her and insisted that she wasn't allowed to use it and claimed to have spoken to his manager. He actually asked her if she knew how to enter the gift card because there were too many numbers. The very first line says ENTER PAYMENT AS CREDIT. If this is the kind of behavior that is tolerated, be sure that I will be contacting not only the gift card company, but will be posting this in other review areas as well. Thank goodness this isn't our hometown Agave and Rye because we definitely wouldn't recommend coming here. read more

This was our second time here. We came for a late lunch both times. We do enjoy the tacos here. My favorites are the Smokeshow and Easy Ranchero. The tortilla chips are good, but they are so thick and crunchy it's a jaw workout. Now the bad and possibly the reason we won't return. The service is terrible, slow, nonexistent, both times. There was one poor girl seating people, taking orders, and bartending on 1/3. She was nice enough and I can't blame her for anything. She was alone and doing her best, but it was so slow for everything. It was probably 25 minutes from getting sat to getting our Pepsi. And it's dirty which is the biggest problem. We were sat at a table that clearly hadn't been wiped down. Sticky beverage marks everywhere, noticeable crumbs and food. I got up and got my own napkins to wipe the table. Look at how dirty the napkin is after one swipe. Don't know if other locations are the same, but we might have to try one if there's a next time. read more

I'm just looking at it... so no comment Now, onto the imbibes... Seriously, guys, the drinks are way overpriced for the portions. I love a good craft cocktail and a greater martini, but the bartender has either been given outrageous guidelines or they can't make a decent drink. A martini that comes out as short as mine did is just insulting for $15. The Agave Epic Rita comes with a shot of Gran Gala (disguised orange liquer), but I don't think there's actually alcohol in the margaritas! Who y'all trying to fool. Presentation was on point and portions are more than reasonable. Just look at the eclectic art and decor of the place! It's like an art gallery fun house combined with high end Mexican fusion. We had a chance to check out Agave and Rye last week and had a great experience. The vibe of the place is super unique and fun. We did notice the acoustics of the dining room could be better, as the music and noise from the other patrons made it a bit difficult to have a conversation. I ordered the Strawberry Bombshell and it was beautiful and refreshing. All of the food we got was tasty, especially the elote app. WOW! For the racks, one recommendation I would give is they could go a little lighter on the toppings. For instance, the asada taco I got had so much cold corn salsa on top of it, that the entire taco was cold and it made for quite a messy experience. Same with the salmon taco. Way too much cabbage on top. But the flavors of everything we had was really good. We'll be back in a few months to give them a chance to iron out some kinks. read more

Food quality was very low, flavors were bland, drinks were weak and way too sugary, and service was bad also. We ordered our second drinks before our food even came, and they still hadn't come ten minutes after we finished eating so we said just forget it. The decor inside is beautiful, so looking around was nice to take in. Queso was awful. Tasted like a bland soup at Panera bread. Tacos were stuffed to look good for pictures, but way too much Mac n cheese and again not impressive flavors, salmon was super thick but very fishy and deep fried which wasn't expected. TOTALLY MISSED THE MARK. I don't usually review restaurants but our family went here on Palm Sunday to celebrate my birthday (3:30 pm) because we had such a nice experience about four weeks prior (February 27). To my dismay and disappointment it was NOT a great experience. It was totally understaffed and although they were not busy when we were there (about three tables total) they still missed the mark. I think they had a total of three people on staff. The bartender, a gentleman running the front and a cook. The bartender was responsible for the bar, waiting tables and seating new customers so was spread very thin and thus could not do any job 100%. Food was slow, we had to request siliver ware, drink refills etc and always felt like we were just adding to the bartenders plate. We will not be going back. Based on cost of food there is a certain expectation for appropriate service when going to a restaurant. They should have closed the doors and called it a day early on when they KNEW they were going to be so understaffed ! read more

The atmosphere is very nice. The bee sting drink was very fun. You bite this little ball and it numbs your mouth and once your mouth is a little numb, it enhances the flavor of the drink and the food. Birria Tacos were on the dryer side. I'm used to more saucy Birria Tacos. read more

Decided to try this place on a whim, and unfortunately was very disappointed. Should've known not to try another "hip" taco chain. There must be a disconnect somewhere, because the other negative reviews were "changed" after a gift card was received. We Waited about 5 min at the hostess stand in an almost empty restaurant and needed to find someone to seat us. We were approached by an unenthusiastic host who seated us. Our server was very kind and courteous, but we waited about 20 min for drinks when there were only a handful of other diners. Food was mediocre at best. I ordered the chicken grilled tacos which did not come with the consume, but with very cold queso. Inside my taco were two produce stickers still on the peppers. I brought this to the attention of the server who then brought the manager over who seemed unphased and took it off the bill. Was given a gift card. This place clearly doesn't stand by their "core values" boldly stated on the menu if they don't care to pay attention to even the basics of food safety. The agave epic rita is described as having fresh lime juice and gran gala, but it was nothing more than a premixed drink with a shot on the side... Also very odd paintings and decor. I had such high hopes for this place, the inside has changed dramatically from when it was Paladar. The service was the absolute worst! The bartender was overly aggressive in tone, we were made to wait by several staff as they had side conversation rather than take our order. The kicker was the ingenue apology after the stand in bar made went out of her way not to help us. Food was flavorful but the burger was ice cold. Actually serving staff was nice and even brought queso and chips. Other Staff were running around whispering about customers to each other. Cleanliness is out the window here. Touching of money then your food, touch their face, nose and then touch fruit to put in your drink. Hopefully they will still be around in a few months after they catch their stride. ***Update**** The owner of Epic Brands reached out to me with an apology for my experience and issued a courtesy gift. I love the decor of this place. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The food has great varieties and different choices. It's quite a fun place to hang out with the fun ambience. The food itself was OK. I was looking forward to the grilled cauliflower sauce on the side, but I guess there's so much sauce that has a white sauce that came on the side. The barbecue sauce is all over it and lots and lots of breading, I felt like there was more Wet breading on the cauliflower than there was cauliflower. Probably one of the worst baked cauliflower I've ever had. The brussels sprouts were OK but again way too much sauce and I actually had the sauce on the side so I'm not sure how much sauce would've come if I hadn't gotten sauce on the side a lot of the items are sweetened. If I'm going to have sugar, I want to have it as a dessert, not in my main dish. And of course occasionally it's not bad like candy, bacon or something like that but if you have candy bacon, you don't need to add additional sweetener on top of it. I also found most of the items to be extremely salty. I'd say if they could cut back on the salt and sugar and extra breading. A lot of the food items would've been pretty tasty. My son who really loves Mexican more than I do did not finish either of his tacos. I do love the whole interior design, though the design and the people they make me want to go. They just need to make better food less salt and less sugar would be a start. I like the different combinations, but let's make it a little healthier. read more

It's 9pm they're open til 11-only about 4 customers here and they refuse to even acknowledge me after seating me. I've been here over 20 minutes and no one has offered to take my order. Service is beyond bad (clueless and untrained) and the food was hard to get (for everyone at the bar) so I couldn't tell you what that's like at all. Joined a friend for a Yelp event. Our sever was Ariel and she was amazing!! She told us her favorites on the menu and gave us enough time to review and decide. The food was delicious!
