Presentation is everything, except when it comes to taiwanese dining. The less impressive the place looks, the more authentic the food is. Usually. This place serves great taiwanese food, I'm a big fan of their beef wrap and eggplant entrees. The only thing is that rice isn't included with the entrees so you'll have to pay a little extra for it, but it didn't detract from the delicious food! Hard to find that in many places nowadays. Chow mein: the perfect Taiwanese kind of chow mein. I wanted to be greedy and eat the whole dish myself. Fish dumplings: this is a dish they're known for I think. You can taste big chunks of fish inside the dumplings. Another winner. My parents were satisfied with all the other dishes ordered. However, a little disappinted they ran out of the big sesame bread and it was only 6pm. This is a small mom and pop shop and when I say small, it's really small with about 4-5 tables. This place accurately is a 3.5 stars. 4 stars for the service and 3 stars for food. The green onion pancake was a little undercooked and mushy on the inside and not pillowy like some others described. Probably inconsistency on the kitchens behalf. The corn egg flower soup I ordered tasted on par except it was very salty, the cook went a little ham with the msg. But they were very nice to remake it for us. The stewed special with squid chicken and intestines was good but again very salty it needs to be accompanied with rice. Though I have to say for $21 it's kind of steep because the portion is small. The corn soup was delicious after they readjusted it. The lady also gave me a little discount for the soup, she felt sorry . I would genuinely give her place another try because they did fix it. Ahgoo is a term to represent, generally speaking, an female of an older generation in your family in Mandarin. My guess that it's a name that will hearken back to the food you had growing up as a Chinese or Chinese American. Well, if nostalgia is what they're selling good food is being made here too. I came with the ladyfriend's grandparents and let them do the ordering. I was quite impressed with the food we had. The sweet and sour soup was the highlight and a must try, especially on a colder day. The workhorse of their menu, the green onion sesame cake was, as promised by the ladyfriend, good as well. We also ordered some veggies and a fish dish that did not dissapoint. The menu here is not large and in many ways that's a good thing as they know what they're making and they make it well, ( think in n out menu) The price is reasonable given the quality of the food you're having. The establishment itself is quite small and can be easy to miss. Apparently space can get limited in the restaurant so plan ahead to expect a potential wait. If there is one downfall, the food can be a bit on the oilier side for those who are extremely health conscious, especially when it comes to their veggies With so many Chinese food options in the SGV area this is a great collection to the bunch that has stood the test of time. Writing a little belated review for this place (I didn't realize it's now temporarily closed!) but I rounded up for an overall 3.5 rating. First of all, the green onion pancake IS pretty great; super cheap for the sheer amount you're getting, and super fluffy like a lot of other reviews say. They're surprisingly light and not as oily or greasy as you'd find in other places. (tip: take them home and they heat up great in a toaster oven!) My partner and I also got beef noodle soup and some morning glory for veggies. The beef noodle soup was unfortunately a little underwhelming; even though there was an abundance of meat in the soup, it was actually a little too much in the meat to noodles ratio, and it was kind of tough. The soup itself also didn't taste like anything special and was a little watery. The veggies were also okay, a little bit on the oily side but I'm wasn't totally surprised. Dear Yelpers: I am very compelled to provide my input because my recent experience was extremely disappointing. Background - I was introduced to this restaurant many years ago by my mom. Since my first visit I've returned to devour their scrumptious Sesame seed green onion bread (which is what they're known for) and also the Beef roll and Fried fish with seaweed. Even after moving to San Fernando Valley I still come back because their food is that delicious. I've recommended this place to many of my family and friends and it has never disappointed. This all changed with our recent visit from the past Saturday on April 28, 2018. Yes, as mentioned by other reviewers, the original owners have sold the business and disappeared. The restaurant name remains the same but the quality of food has not. From the past Saturday we had ordered 5 dishes: Stir fry a-choy with garlic, Green onion pancake, Beef noodle soup, Beef roll, and Fried fish with seaweed. Stir fry a-choy with garlic - Flavor is decent but portions were very small, especially at $9. Green onion pancake - Biggest disappointment, bread was not crunchy on the outside and the inside was not fully cooked as it had that doughy texture. The original green onion pancake had a golden brown color with a nice crunch and the inside was very fluffy. Beef noodle soup - Flavor is different as cumin was added. Noodles were also different as it seemed like it was store bought. Another complaint is that they give you very little amount of meat, only a couple of thin slices. There should be some beef in the dish if you want to call it Beef noodle soup. Beef roll - The skin wrap was extremely thick and too filling. Also, same complaint as the Beef noodle soup as there is barely any beef slices in the wraps. Fried fish with seaweed - Another disappointment as it was oily and had added more breading to the fish (so essentially less fish). At the end of the meal I felt that I overpaid for the amount and quality of food, too much carb and not a lot of substance. Especially when there are alot better places for the price. What do you need to know about Ahgoo's Kitchen? Their food is DELICIOUS - I highly recommend the sesame green onion cake, hot and sour soup, mongolian lamb, pork/napa dumplings and beef roll (the beef roll is pretty different than other places - the wrap itself is thicker and chewy, and the beef inside is soft, almost Katz's-pastrami-like in texture.). It's a TINY place. They're made efforts to make the interior look nicer than it used to, and I appreciate that. There is a bathroom towards the back. Service is pleasant. CASH ONLY. I've been here many times and even when we call ahead to reserve a table or place a take-out order, there have been occasions when we've been turned down because they're really that busy. It's not a big restaurant, there's only one chef making all the food. So please, before you start flinging out one-star reviews because it makes you feel like you have some power (Elbert L., I'm looking at you - why would they hoard their OWN food?), base your review on the actual food so that you can be of some help to others. I usually come early, between 5-5:30 PM, and we *always* call ahead to reserve a table and also order the sesame green onion cake in advance (which, if you order when you get there, they might not have available right away because it takes time to make and cook). They don't skimp with the green onions, as you can see from the pictures on Yelp, and the outside is crisp while the inside is soft and chewy. One time I came 15 minutes before they opened for dinner on a Saturday to place a take-out order that included the green onion cake and was told that, because they had closed late after lunch, it wasn't ready just yet. Drove out of the way from the Pasadena area to try these ginormous scallion pancakes, and I have no regrets. We almost didn't make it in time before they closed for dinner, but fortunately we slipped in and chowed down on some pancakes, dumplings and a beef noodle soup. I love Taiwanese food, and this place is pretty legit. Pretty unassuming, as all the good restaurants are, and worth a visit. +Definitely try the pancakes. But bring a couple friends or five as you'll definitely have enough to go around. I would have to say Mama's Lus is better as I prefer the thin/crispier type, but I had to try this fluffy one because it just looked so darn appealing. +Beef noodle soup and dumplings were good, not the best I've ever had, but solid. +Service was great - definitely took a little bit of time to cook the pancakes, but the fact that they refilled our beef noodle soup with broth after noticing it was low (without asking) was really sweet. A few of the workers kind of treated us like they knew us, which was cool because I don't even really know Chinese/had never visited before. +Easy parking lot in the front. -They had a major leak that started from the kitchen or bathroom area and flooded the entire hallway, reaching the dining area. They said next time I should call in. So I called at 1pm to place my order and they told me that there were sold out. Alright whatever I said. OMG the Pan Fried Sesame Green Onion Cake here is like the best thing ever. This is their signature dish and it is my absolute favorite. Location: This place is definitely a hidden gem located in a small plaza off Valley Blvd but past Baldwin Ave so it's far from all the other restaurants in the 626. The restaurant itself is also very small and probably only has about 8 tables. Parking: This plaza also has a few other restaurants and shops, but I have never had trouble finding parking. Just be careful because some spots are for only 30 or 45 minutes! Food: I have tried the beef roll, hot and sour soup and different dumplings here and everything was really delicious! Price: Each item is around $10, but the portions are large so it's still a good deal. Service: The only downside to this restaurant is how slow everything comes out. I don't really know how they make their pancakes but it literally takes 30 minutes for the pancake to come out. I have been coming here and purchasing their Chili Oil for all my friends and family and they are hooked! You can purchase a huge jar of it for $5. I guarantee you will not be unsatisfied with it. I've gone here 3 times now and all three times they have told me it my face that they were out of a specific dish when I watched others around me order it. I'm Caucasian, husband is Asian. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but how upsetting. The last time we went in this past week, we ordered 4 dishes (after the first dish we wanted we were told they didn't have even tough I was looking right at it). The first dish came out 15 minutes after I seeing which is fine. Both those families came in after us: one 10 minutes later, the other 15 minutes later and their entire party wasn't even there yet. But they both got their food in an appropriate amount of time while we still sat there with one empty dish in front of us waiting for the other dishes one by one by one. Finally, after 45 minutes of waiting for said 3-4th dish, hubby just paid the bill/cash for the two menu items that had actually arrived including tax, and we left. The Beef Stew Noodles and the potstickers (which I believe is a special order off the menu) are worth a return visit. There is a cold dish called Shredded Potatoes that is quite tasty. Yummy Taiwanese food! I'd been seeing glimpses of the delectable dishes coming from my cousin Nina, who has been taste testing for the expanding new menu of Ahgoo's Kitchen. Even though I'm cousins with Nina, I'm not actually related to her "Ahgoo," head chef Thomas Yeh. Although Ahgoo's Kitchen has been open for two months, today was my first chance to try it out. A group of us were able to try a few of their most popular dishes. I loved them all because some of them are Taiwanese "classics" but some are unique to this restaurant. *Beef Noodle Soup (aka Beefed Up Noodle Soup): A good-sized bowl filled with thick noodles, tender braised beef, balanced with fresh vegetables in steaming hot soup. Definitely in contention for being my favorite BNS in the SGV. *Flavorful Beef Rolls: tender beef, rolled with fresh vegetables in flaky Taiwanese pastry. A perfect combination of flavors and textures. Definitely try this! *Seaweed Seasoned Battered Fish: This was my favorite dish. I've had similar versions of this battered fried fish before, but I can't remember where. Actually, I'm thinking the only time I've had this is at home when my Mom made it. Perfectly fried so that it's slightly crispy on the bite but soft and tender on the inside, you need to leave room to finish this dish at the restaurant because it's not as good when you take it home. (Note: I'm told that the crispy fish holds up so long as you bring it home with you uncovered. I'm sure if you reheated it in the toaster oven, that wouldn't hurt things, either.) *Honey Burdock Root: Another special dish that I haven't had anywhere else. Burdock is supposed to be really good for you, but I'm pretty sure you'd never know it by how delicious this dish is. The burdock is battered, fried, and then drenched in a light honey sauce before getting a sprinkling of sesame seeds. Delicious and unique! *Pan-fried Pork & Vegetable Dumplings: The giant cousin of the gyoza, these dumplings are perfectly pan-fried so the crispy ring stays intact and is presented on top, while the overstuffed meat filling is steamy, juicy, and is a perfect contrast to the light crunch of the pan-fried wrapper. *Slightly Spicy Succulent Shrimp: When we were already filled to the gills, this dish showed up and was still gobbled down despite our full tummies. Lightly battered fried shrimp were covered in a sweet and spicy sauce, like a seafood version of orange chicken with a kick. We had one more dish but it was an "Ahgoo Surprise" of some spicy beef dish, but we were both unsure of what it was and I don't think you can order it, so I've left it off the review. Cash only. Was going to go to a restaurant close by but it was closed so we decided to try this place out because of the good ratings on Yelp and their Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Little did I know I came very disappointed. Their service for us was VERY slow compared to the other tables---to the point where my mom was getting very agitated that she wanted us all to leave before the dishes even came. People who came after us had their dishes before we did and we both ordered pretty similar things. The food was also very mediocre and the only thing I liked about this place was their homemade noodles used in their beef noodle soup. You use the condiments on the side to add the spiciness to the soup. The noodles were very chewy which I liked, but the soup itself was nothing special. I've had better Taiwanese beef noodle soup at mama liangs and number one noodle house in Rowland Heights. Their onion pancakes were a lot thicker than the onion pancakes I usually get, but they are thick in a bad way. The thickness in fact made the pancakes kind of hard to chew. It was questionable as to whether or not the pancake was stale or just wasn't fried enough. While it contained a lot of green onions, the pancake still lacked flavor. As for the beef roll, the first bite was amazing but then all of a sudden it got very bland like the sweet sauce wasn't evenly spread out. Although I liked the outside of this beef roll more than I do the onion pancakes, the beef roll was still lacking flavor as well, with some parts having more flavor than other parts. Another local gem in El Monte! Green onion pancake is the BOMB!! No kidding! And you won't find anything similar anywhere else! Recommendation: -Thick green onion pancakes -Thin pancakes -Beef rolls -salty eggs pumpkins -spicy beef and tofu (cold dish) This place mainly serves stir fried dishes so I would recommend being at least 3 so you can enjoy a variety of dishes along with the green onion pancakes.
