A friend of mine had posted the sesame green onion cake on instagram and I knew I had to go and try it. I have been obsessed with making my own green onion pancake after the pandemic/quarantine hite but I knew I couldn't make it on that level. Some obstacles for comning here included, lunch and dinner hours - they closed from 3-5 so I had to come here at 5. I called right when they opened to place my order (was coming from my sister's place in San Gabriel which was only 10 minutes away.) A chinese lady picked up and didn't speak a lick of English! Great, so I called back 5 minutes later and she put this guy on. So I placed my order for the sesame green onion cake, the fried seaweed fish, the pork dumplings and some string beans. He said it would take 25 minutes because of the pancakes. So I left my sister's place, got there and parked in 10 minutes. A lady was sitting outside waiting for her order. I had my dog, so I left her in the car to pay. Same lady who didn't speak English took my payment and then I waited another 20 mins for my food. Took it home and had to reheat when my BF got home. It was still pretty good - the sesame green onion cake was fluffly and delicious. As were the fried fish, string beans and pork dumplings (no Din Tai Fung or Mama Lu's). COVID-19 Edition Review There is so much hype on Ahgoo's Kitchen's Green Onion Sesame Pie and I'M ALL FOR IT. This place is the only place in 626 that does this (please let me know if I'm wrong) but I would definitely recommend coming here for this and try their other foods. Definitely want to keep up supporting local restaurants and I love the food here. I called in to pick up my order and it was about a 20 mins wait? When I got there to pay, they made me wait another 5-10 mins which is fine by me and it shows that this restaurant is busy which is a good thing. I ordered the Signature Green Onion Sesame Pie, Sesame Thin Pizza, Preserved Veggies Intestines, and the Seaweed Fried Fish Filet and the total came out to be about $60 which is on the pricier side in my opinion compared to other restaurants in the area. However, the food is worth it in my opinion. Everything that I ordered was really good for what it is. Let me start with the popular green onion pie...it is a 10/10 MUST GET item. It's flavorful, crispy on the outside, and super fluffy on the inside. Might I say it's better than a regular green onion pancake which I'm the biggest fan of. Definitely can't get something like this in other restaurants. The sesame thin pizza (which is my parent's favorites) was alittle bland and somewhat sweet and savory due to the sesame but nevertheless still decent. Ordering intestines can be a hit or miss sometimes depending on how well the restaurants clean it and Ahgoo does a really good job on it. The preserved veggies masks any stinkiness from intestines which I think is a really combo overall (not that there was any stinkiness from the intestines). The seaweed fish is a classic Shanghainese dish so I was worried that it wouldn't taste anywhere close to what you get from a Shanghai restaurant but I was wrong, this seaweed fish is fried to perfection, alittle on the oily side, and the traditional way is to have the salt/pepper dip on the side but they sprinkled it on top. I would have prefered it on the side but it still worked out really well. Definitely will come back again in the future. My friend Charlie recently went to this joint and posted about it. I couldn't stop thinking about it after seeing his pictures, so, two days before their one month vacation, me and slave girl made it in. When we got there during lunch time on a Saturday, the parking lot was fully packed but luckily the street parking was available. The wait in the restaurant wasn't too bad since it was only about ten minutes or so. Unfortunately after we were seated, we were forgotten right away and I saw the waitress taking orders from the group after us. I was like hell no, walked up to her and let her know what's up. She apologized and thought we ordered already and just looked bored waiting for our food to arrive. Everything after that was all good. Note: if you are in an Asian restaurant, please don't assume they know anything and everything. If I did nothing and just sat there waiting, I would have been hangry and nothing would be accomplished. We got some free appetizers, hot and sour soup, leak and fish dumplings, sliced bean curd and pork, beef noodle soup, and the famous green onion sesame pancake. I am not a fan of their bean curd and pork because it was bland and flavorless. If they used a little more salt then it would have been good. Everything else though was amazingly tasty and satisfying. All the noodles, pancake, and dumplings were made in house, and you can totally taste the difference. Their beef noodle soup, surprisingly not spicy but the broth was full of beefy flavor and love. Their famous pancake is indeed worth every penny. Fluffy inside with crunchy out layer, no dipping sauce necessary and plenty of good chews. Something I would love to have more but I got full from just couple of pieces. Ahgoo's Kitchen is a classic hole-in-the-wall and it should be proud of that distinction. Its two popular items - the thick green onion pancake and beef rolls - are enough alone to inspire regular patronage. For me, it comes down to the texture: just the right balance of crispy and fluffy, hearty but not greasy. That goes for both of the two aforementioned items. The portions are generous and easily shareable with 2+ people (but also no shame in ordering for one and having leftovers the next few days). Would definitely recommend trying these two items. For full transparency: I did call my order ahead of time but still had to wait 30 minutes in-store for my food. It seems like there's just one chef and one woman manning the front. Alternatively, you can tack on additional time to their estimated wait time and you may end up getting your food sooner. I pass by this restaurant so many times and am surprised that I never went in. Ever since visiting Taiwan, I have started craving green onion pancakes like no other. Every restaurant I go to, I always order green onion pancakes. While these aren't the traditional ones I'm used to seeing, I am so in awe of these Green Onion Sesame Pies. They are so delicious, hot, and literally one of the best green onion pancakes I've had. It is so soft and flavorful on the inside while also being crispy on the outside. This place is super mom and pop, and the lady working here was so kind to me. It did take 20 minutes for me since I ordered in person, but so worth it! Beware! Change of ownership! My mom knew the previous owners of Ahgoo's Kitchen and the food was phenomenal! We came here for back to back family gatherings, and would endure the long wait for their delicious green onion sesame pan fried cakes. Well it's unfortunate that this place has gone downhill. I recommended this place for lunch with some friends today in hopes that the food and service would still remain up to par. Sadly, our experience was pretty bad. It took a long time before they paid any attention to our table for us to finally order. Once we started ordering, pretty much everything was out. They couldn't make the green onion cakes, or anything fried for one reason or another. My friend inquired about the dumplings which they had available and asked them if we could have them fried so we could have potstickers. Instead of telling us no, they told us it's not healthy to cook the dumplings in oil and they are watching out for our health (completely uncalled for). We ended up ordering the beef rolls, two types of dumplings, and hot and sour soup. When the food came out, I noticed that everything tasted different than before. Food was bland and lacking much flavor. The beef rolls were undercooked and not crispy, in fact they fell apart really easily. The dumplings came out fried anyway after she gave us a hard time about frying them. My friend asked for a second glass of water and the lady made a comment about how he drank too much cold water (again totally uncalled for and rude). I'd definitely pass on this place since there's so many great Chinese restaurants in the SGV. The service and food left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I don't think I'll ever return. Someone post the 'Green Onion Sesame Pie' (蔥花芝麻大餅) from this restaurant and it seems so attractive that's why we decided to try it as our Sunday dinner. We arrived around 5:30PM and it was easy to find the parking spot on the street (not sure if they have their own parking lot or not). We were seated immediately and served with hot tea. By reading the menu we started wondering what kind of restaurant it is... In the beginning it seems like northern Chinese cuisine but it also offer a lot of Taiwanese dishes... We end up ordered Onion Fried Lamb (蔥爆羊肉), Preserved Vegetable with Chitterlings (酸菜炒大腸), and Signature Green Onion Sesame Pie (招牌蔥花芝麻大餅). We were served bean sprouts and kimchi as free appetizers. Bean sprouts was freshly made and very tasty. Kimchi was spicy but I still manage to take a small bite to try it. The spicy taste doesn't stay in the mouth for long time not the hell-kind-of-spicy. Onion Fried Lamb (蔥爆羊肉) $15.95 - This is one of 'Chef's Recommendations' on the wall. The dish was huge and flavor was pretty good, not over salty but they used too much tenderizer for the lamb. Basically you know you are eating some kind of meat but you can't really tell what meat it is... The texture of the meat was totally gone so I wouldn't recommend to order it. Preserved Vegetable with Chitterlings (酸菜炒大腸) $13.95 - Again this was a huge dish but unlike the previous one, the preserved vegetable was SO SALTY and we didn't expect that... Usually preserved vegetable should be more sour than salty but this one was really salty. Luckily the intestine part was okay and they clean it very well (no funky smell). Signature Green Onion Sesame Pie (招牌蔥花芝麻大餅) $12.95 - Finally this dish came to our table. It's really popular and it is on every table in the restaurant. Its skin was crispy and inside was so soft, you can taste the green onion in every bite... really unique and can't find it anywhere else. Other than foods, I have to mention a few other things: First, the restaurant was slow on preparing and serving dishes. We were lucky to order early otherwise we would have to wait for longer time. Second, we noticed the restaurant served the first Green Onion Sesame Pie to a table which was seated and ordered after our table, and I don't think they didn't know about it. Third, the minimum amount for credit card is $30 but when we tried to use credit card, the waitress told us that the credit card machine had problem connecting to the server so we had to use cash to pay. That dish was the highlight and main reason why I wanted to try out Ahgoo's. Alas, will have to try another time. Not exaggerating, I've been looking for BNS ever since I moved to the states, and everywhere has been a disappointment tbh. Long wait. Messy and rude customer service. We've asked to sit down for more than 15min and asked twice for some water, then finally got the water. They don't serve any beef noodle but the chef special menu and regular menu still has it to show customer. Plus, the lady who is rushed to do everything without patience, such as take order. I know you are busy but at least you can wait 1 minute to take away the dishes after we finished to packed up the food. It's offensive to put the dirty dishes cart next to the customer. The AC is so cold even it's already cold outside. And they still leave the door opened and it's getting colder. Food is nothing outstanding except the sesame oil pork. As hole in the wall as you can get in the SGV, Ahgoo's Kitchen is a true gem, featuring some deliciously abnormally thick green onion pancakes, solid beef noodle soup, and the most very finely shredded bean curd noodles I've ever had. Run by some down to earth people as most shops of this nature are, you can tell a lot of heart and effort goes into the preparation of the food here. Although the establishment (and its parking lot) are quite small and a bit run down in appearance, Ahgoo's Kitchen also provides take out if you don't want to feel cramped. My family has been going to Ahgoo's Kitchen for years (ever since they started at their El Monte location) but I am sad to say that we probably will not be returning any time soon. We recently went last week and their staff mixed up our table's order with our neighboring table's order so badly that 80% of our dishes "mistakenly" went to the WRONG table. The table next to us arrived 20 minutes after us and got most of our dishes. We had asked the staff after we saw the first 3 dishes get sent over to their table and the staff just brushed it off. We then saw our next 5 dishes get sent over to their table as well. Even items that they did not order, they kept!! We kept asking the staff where our dishes were since we were waiting over an hour after ordering and only received TWO dishes by then. Their staff's constant response was "oh sorry. we're still preparing your dishes in the back." Meanwhile, we saw tables who came in substantially after us receive all their dishes. It was not until all the other tables received their dishes when their staff frantically started cooking our items. At this point, we were pretty fed up and asked to cancel some of our items considering how long it was taking. They refused to let us cancel, claiming they were "working on them." I'm normally pretty patient when it comes to waiting for my dishes but waiting over 1.5 HOURS for our food was ridiculous. By the time we received our food, we completely lost our appetite and packed up half the food. Their staff need to learn table numbers better and get everyone's orders straight. They were marking off that we had received our dishes when they were giving them to the next table. Even after we had complained to them the first time we caught them doing that, they consistently did it another 2 rounds! A man who also came in for a takeout order was also upset given how long it was taking. He waited over 40 minutes for one dish! Unfortunately they are completely disorganized compared to when they were at their smaller location. Ahgoo's Kitchen was originally located in El Monte and has since moved to Temple City. This restaurant has probably one of the greatest thick onion pancakes. The food here may be amazing, but the service here is mediocre at best. If you are looking for a place to wine and dine you, this is 100% not the place for you. You often need to flag down the waitress, for utensils or other basics. However, the prices here are NOT CHEAP. They have many high priced dishes that are well over the typical asking price of other Asian restaurants. However it is because of the incredible amount of time and skill that is put into each dish. With the service and and price being two large cons, I would still rate this restaurant a 4/5 star because of how incredibly delicious it is. Obviously a fan favorite is the thick onion pancake. This is likely because they do not skim on the green onions placed inside it. The pancake is fluffy and moist. They have truly perfected the recipe so that it is not overly dense of overly chewy. We also will always get the mixed cold plate. Overall it doesn't look very appetizing, but it is extremely tasty! There is also a battered fish that is very delicious as well, however I feel like some portions have to much batter on it. The pork with bean curd is also a popular dish that you can tell needs a lot of time to prepare, however I felt it was a little oily, but overall flavor was still great. The shredded potatoes and carrots are also extremely well made. Overall the restaurant is really delicious. They have improvements they need to work on, but the food keeps me coming back. The food comes in sufficient time and good sizes. The price for each plate is not cheap but reasonable. We order following , combination fried rice, fried red yeast pork belly, stir fried cabbage, Shepherdspurse veggie and tofu Soup, signature green onion sesame pie, and beef wraps. Five stars for amazing Chinese food dishes that they served over there. My most favorite food items would have to be the Seaweed Fish Filet, the Green Onion Cake, and the Fried Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk that tasted very good! I waited only around less than 30 minutes to received the foods that I ordered. Overall, very friendly and fast service that my parents and I don't have to wait that long. Keep in mind though the wait for that item itself is at least twenty minutes so time accordingly. Also, the dish is not cheap at almost $20 but well worth the cost and wait. They sat me at an awkward table that was right next to the check in table with no barrier so people kept shoving the white board into my face asking what the wait time is thinking I'm a lazy server. 3. The table used a oil stained sheet of white butcher paper that they refused to switch out for me when all other tables were cleaned. 4. $30 credit card minimum. Had an early dinner with friends on a Sunday afternoon. Although I was recovering from a cold and didn't have my usual appetite, I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the meal and even ended up finding my stomach as I ate. We ordered the sesame pancakes, beef noodle soup and a side of dumplings, which came out first. Completing our order took a little over twenty minutes. Though there weren't that many diners that day, they still had most of the their tables filled, and with limited staffing as others have written this is understandable. As I mentioned the flavors were great, especially that beef noodle soup. Though we shared all the food that was ordered, I could have easily ordered another bowl and eaten it myself, had I no manners. Also tried the bean curd with shredded pork. It was a tad too oily, but it had good flavor from the pork. That shows that they care about the food they serve, the kind that you might prepare for your family. This restaurant relocated to temple city recently which is much closer for me! LOVE LOVE their green onion thick pancake. Although the store is much bigger than its previous location, it is still VERY busy. We waited 30 min on a sat night for a party of 4. Don't except "great service" due to their short staff situation but the food is super delish. We ordered infamous green onion thick pancake (takes 20 min to make so order early), fried fish strips, bamboo shoot with shredded pork and beef stir fried with green onion which are ALL sooooo good. I continuously rave about it because it is just THAT good. There used to be one in Hacienda but they closed ... and it's honestly nothing compared to Ahgoo! :) *** FRIENDLY NOTE*** I suggest for your to place your order for the da bing beforehand because it does take awhile to make. For to go orders, I would place it 45 mins before leaving and you can also call ahead of time to tell them to start making it before you dine in so it'll be ready when you get there. Their dumpings are also spectacular! It's handmade from scratch and filled with lots of cabbage & pork (comes with 10 pieces as well) Their shredded potato is BOMB as well. We thought it was going to be stir fried but it's actually a cold dish, I would most likely consider it an appetizer. So glad I found this place and it's definitely a spot I'm adding to my rotation. I'd been searching for a place like Supreme Dragon which had everything and Ahgoo's Kitchen is close. Their menu is a lot smaller but they have all my family and I's favorite things. We got the big scallion pancake, beef noodles, a-choy, beef roll, seasoned cucumbers, shredded pork w/ bamboo and the fried seaweed fish. My mom was so excited when the pork w/ bamboo came out because the bamboo was fresh and it reminded her of the bamboo she used to get in Taiwan. The scallion pancake was fluffy and filled w/ scallions. It was perfect to eat with the dishes we ordered. The beef in the beef roll was super tender, the roll was light and crispy and it wasn't overloaded w/ sauce. The fried seaweed fish was fried to a perfect crisp and was dad-approved. The broth for the beef noodles had a deep, well-rounded flavor with fresh noodles cooked al dente and the beef and tendon were cooked perfectly. It's a tiny restaurant w/ a two people serving/taking orders but they were all very friendly and fulfilled our requests even though they were slammed when we arrived. Totally a fan of their green onion pancakes. IT'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIE!!!!!!!!! Yes, that was a reference to Despicable Me as Agnes excitedly clutches onto the unicorn, because that's how I felt about these pancakes. SO FLUFFY. SUCH EXCITEMENT. If you come here, you HAVE TO get the green onion pancakes. You know they do it right when you walk in and every table has a basketful of them! They are so fluffy and soft and delicious-y oniony inside, and held together by crispy layers. One order comes with 8 thick slices. The two of us made it through 4 slices.. and had plenty of leftovers. (That I'm actually re-eating right now as I write this review. And I gotta say - heated up in an convention oven still makes them just as delicious!!) We also ordered the stir fried bean curd and pork dish. This dish was big and hearty and had a nice simple flavor to it, that cemented the homecooked feel of the food. Their menu is really simple, and I wish there were more dishes to choose from. Ordered just the onion pancakes Togo. It came out pretty fresh so probably warmed up and not really made fresh. It was good but was not hot and crunchy. Hopefully if cooked fresh at the spot would be better but at $15 a bit too pricey for green onion pancakes read more

april 2019 update: The original ahgoo is back!! New location, same owner/cook, same awesome food. It's right back on my list of favorite restaurants. I have to say though, the service was really really slow and they also somehow lost our order slip.. It felt like they were operating and staffed as if they're still in their old tiny space. I'm sure it takes time to get the hang of a bigger place so hopefully they can get it together sooner rather than later. Anyway, still super happy that they're back! read more
