This is still one of our favorite local sushi places. Lately I have been having the veggie combo sushi plate, and the salmon skin rolls. Both are very good! They have started keeping gluten-free soy sauce available, and if you have them leave the sauce off the salmon skin rolls they are gluten-free (as far as I know). This place is informal, usually with televisions on in one room, But the staff are friendly and helpful, and the food is consistently good, and reasonably priced. Drove from San Diego to visit Apline and decided to have sushi. I had the Crispy rice tuna with no tuna. Also ordered the pizza roll that had no a avacado or cucumber which is why I ordered it. Very disappointed, I will never come here or recommend this place. Good luck!!! read more

It takes a lot to motivate me to write a bad review but this place is absolutely disgusting in every aspect. No idea how they are still in business. Upon entry there are discarded boxes and garbage stacked against the sushi bar and kitchen entrance. The server was a slovenly unshaven slob wearing a baseball cap and street clothes and needing a haircut and lesson in personal hygiene, more interested in his cell phone and repeatedly eating the restaurant's fortune cookies than checking with tables and taking orders. How about a dress code for your wait staff and training them not use cell phones directly in front of customers? Maybe matching shirts and no hats? It's the bare minimum you can do... He never once checked back on us to see if anything was good, seemed to have no idea how to serve customers, let us sit there with everything pushed aside at the table for a good 20 minutes, despite standing about 10 feet from us. The rice on the cut roll was as hard as bullets, had to be at least a day old. The fish was such a tiny portion it almost wasn't there and also seemed days old. They had no bottled water, just tap water in plastic tumblers. It is so tough to buy some glassware? You're a restaurant ffs... I just went to a grocery store downtown and got a far better cut roll than they could produce. At a grocery store. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this joint. Whoever took it over has no idea how to run a restaurant. I don't expect miracles in an East County location but if you're going to call yourself a restaurant you have to at the very least get the basics right. Don't stack trash in your dining room and employ a manager to train and watch your servers. Hire a competent sushi chef that is behind the bar and greeting customers. I feel lucky I escaped without getting food poisoning. You've been warned. read more

Popped in for lunch here. It was Memorial Day and the TV was playing "Black Hawk Down" which I thought was apropos. I had the "seafood roll" which was more like a seafood salad with a little rice, it was good, though it was a bit vinegary. This is truly a hidden gem. It's a small little place not far from the freeway, but well worth the drive. We are always seated promptly & if we have our kids with us, always choose the patio. Otherwise, it's nice to sit at the sushi bar. The servers are all very nice & on top of their game. We have never had complications or confusions with our food. We always start with the garlic edamame... even the kids love it. Second on our list is ALWAYS a sexy roll. It is a staple. We also love the Hawaiian roll & the red dragon. If you are feeling like a salad, the ahi tower is all the good things about a roll dumped on top of a salad. Ugh, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Price wise it's pretty equivalent to other sushi restaurants so no complaints there. Don't pass this place up if you get the chance! read more

Getting Sushi in Alpine, I didn't have very high expectations. I have to say, this place is decent. We got Egg Drop Soup, Edaname, Crispy Rice Roll, Rock N Roll, and a I think, San Diego roll? All were very good. The Rock N Roll was my fave. The staff was super friendly. We also used the restroom which was clean as was the rest of the restaurant. Lots of parking and reasonable prices. Sitting here 15 minutes to close as I write this. I have worked in the service industry so I tried to be as quick as possible once I got off work to get here for takeout seeing as they are one of the only places in alpine to eat this late, employees were very welcoming telling me to take my time as i ordered a glass of plum wine while I waited. I ended up eating here and the food is DELCIOUS! Very fresh tasting. Service is excellent. Employees are respectful, clean, accommodating, very quick and hardworking! The feel of this place is amazing, dim almost candle lit looking lighting, and beautiful inside. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for delicious sushi with a beautiful dining experience. Going on nearly eleven years of pleasuring my taste buds Ahi is a definitive main stay in my masticating repertoire. Friendly faces always great you as you enter this non-freeway friendly location with the usual option to seat yourself. When raising boys who love sushi this always inexpensive location suits your basic needs to tap into your sushi sweet tooth. A near consistent staff often remembers your usual orders while the chef in training so many years ago now leads the orchestra of roll builders. The kitchen orders are meh while the rolls that are freshly prepared for you pass just above par. When you bring in the cost to value ratio you move from a three meh to a four meh rating. Sure it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of a five star restaurant - but with the just amount of lighting and seating allows an ambience to gather, grub, and be unreasonably loud while catching up with family and friends, or simply to grab a bite after a long days work. We gave this place a couple of tries, but both times were disappointed. While my son finds the sushi here enjoyable, I couldn't get past the grey hamachi. There were still some silvery patches of skin on it, as well. I'm semi-picky about my fish, and this was completely unacceptable. The roll I ended up with was doused in lemon juice, so much so that it left a puddle on the plate. I didn't recall ordering a lemon roll, but by the time I was done, I wasn't interested in peeking back at the menu and making sure. Near the end of the meal, our server disappeared. After sitting and looking at each other for 10 minutes, I flagged down one of the sushi staff, and asked for the check. Despite having my wallet in my hand, and credit card out, the waitress handed me the bill, and immediately turned and fled back into the kitchen. Queue another five minute wait, and I finally went to stand by the register to give them a clue. The place was *not busy* at the time. Summary: bad ingredients, bad tasting roll, and bad service. Huge fan of Ahi... I've eaten in here a few times with great service but I mainly take my sushi to go. I love the combos they put together, where essentially you can get 4 pieces of 4 different rolls for the same price as one of the larger special rolls. Its a nice way to sample the selections they offer. We usually order one of each of the combos and have a nice little feast. If you dine in, you've gotta try the Hamachi Kama!! They make it really delicious here and the portions are big. Love this place! read more

One of the worst customer service I've dealt with, fast food included. I called my order 30 minutes before. It was a relatively simple order- avocado roll and CA roll. White lady over the phone was pleasant. When I got here 20 minutes later (as they suggested) they supposedly didn't have it ready and there was only 4 other people in the restaurant. The Asian chick with broken English was beyond rude and never made an effort to check on my order. When I finally started to lose patience she started to look around and ask questions while rolling her eyes and giving me an entitled attitude. Come to find out my order was just sitting off to the side and no one bothered to bring it out. I've placed "to go" orders in numerous sushi places in Calabasas, Valencia, OC and this is by far the worst service I've ever gotten. I will never come back and will rather drive 30 minutes to go to ones in San Diego. Shame this is the only sushi place in Alpine. Unreal. As for the food, it was fine. Straight up Americanized "Chinese" food, in the blandest, most non offensive way. The sushi is legit but don't get one of the rolls that are on special for the night because many times I've done that and the rice is cold, as though it was pre-prepared. I've had the wonton soup and it's always hot and tasty, just what you need when you have a cold. The place is small but there is a nice patio and when the weather is nice, it's a lovely place to sit and eat. The customer service is very hit and miss. By and large, it is usually friendly and competent but sometimes it can be head scracthingly bad. Anyway, if you have not big expectations for legit Chinese food, you'll be happy, otherwise make the trek down the hill to Kearney Mesa or Mid City. read more

This sushi place has some very friendly servers, but more than once I ordered a more expensive roll to go and when I arrived home I realized it was substituted with a cheaper roll (e.g. substituted two tempura rolls for two avocado rolls and charged the price for the tempura rolls). I did not feel that it was worth driving back, but I would have said something had I checked the order when I picked it up. So I recommend that if you order for pick up, you check your order. Your receipt may say one thing, but the actual order could be significantly different. I will not buy sushi from this place anymore. read more

Very disappointing. Looks like they have someone padding their reviews to 5 stars. $74 not well spent. We had asked the waitress what fish was fresh today. We were assured that the fish was bought fresh every day. We started with the shrimp appetizer and soft shell crab. The shrimp tasted frozen rather than fresh and the oil it was fried must have been old too because it added a rancid taste to the dish. The dipping sauce tasted like it was out of a jar. The soft shell crab looked like common crab legs fried in a batter. When pressed you could squeeze out oil. One bite into one leg was so disgusting that I had to spit it out in my napkin and wipe the taste out of my mouth. It tasted of old gym socks. The rest of the meal consisted of non-descript rolls and some chicken dish covered in a sauce that tasted out of a jar to which only warranted a bite or two. The waitress was trying but seemed like this may be her first job with a look of confusion. At one point she asked, "Are you going to eat that. It's shrimp [not soft shell crab]" because I had picked out any fried fish from the roll. It made me feel as if my mom was telling me to eat clean my plate as there are starving children in the world. AWKWARD. None of the fish had an ocean fresh taste which comes with good sushi. The pricing would make it impossible for them to buy good quality ingredient . Maybe refocus the menu to fewer items that are well cooked. Raise the price to assure you can purchase the best ingredients. Keep dining area free of items that are being stored or hide these behind a screen (across from our table in the back folding chairs were being stored). Have staff watch for fallen food, as rice and some stray straws that were seen when arrived were still on the floor when we left. Most importantly.... Sushi is really unforgiving for those who have not mastered it. read more

This place has really grown on me over the last couple months. They are definitely my favorite sushi restaurant in Alpine! I love that they offer brown rice substitutions on all rolls for no additional charge. I also love that if I ask for substitutions they are more than accommodating. I am a big fan of their spicy tuna hand roll, rainbow roll, and sashimi lunch special. I also just recently started trying their protein roll which is also pretty tasty. Poor service - multiple orders were wrong, mushy fish in the sushi, burnt paper chicken. No offer to make the orders correct or take off the burnt chicken. Had two rolls that tasted decent.
