This is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Omaha. It is a hole in the wall "diner" and is cash only. The food is well-priced and it is a place that my husband and kids like too (sometimes it is hard to find a place we all like). I always get their hash browns, which come out hot and are crispy on the outside and nice potato texture on the inside. Their sausage patties are tasty (a step above usual sausage from breakfast places). My kids like the pancakes, eggs, biscuits. They serve Rotella's brand for bread which is great in my book since Rotella's doesn't use any dairy products. I haven't been for lunch but breakfast is always good but plan for a 10-15 minute wait on Sun mornings, since it has a following and is not that big a place. read more

I love diners especially breakfast diners. This is one that is going to be on my diners list. It was our first time to go here and it did not disappoint. The place was small not your typical diner. The place was also full when we went there. The servers were really friendly and attentive to their customers. The service was really fast which is always a plus especially when you are hungry. I ordered the combination half order of biscuits and gravy, 2 eggs, sausage patty and hash browns. My husband ordered the french toast combo and bacon. Everything was really good and tasty! And to top it all off, someone paid for our meal! How amazing was that!? We tipped our server really good in return. :) The biscuits and gravy was so good we bought a to go one. Oh and the pancake was also good. Omaha has some friendly folks! Will definitely be back! Lastly, they only take cash and check so be sure you got some. Breakfast just like mom used to make for you. Came here on a late Saturday morning. I had the chicken fried steak omelet. It is served with hash browns and a choice of toast or a pancake, I opted for the pancake. The omelet was light, fluffy, loaded with pieces of chicken fried steak. It was perfectly cooked and covered with a light white gravy. It was absolutely delicious. The hash browns were some of the best that I have ever had. Add to that a large very good pancake and you have a breakfast that very good and for less then $8. If it is on the special menu, go for the 3x3x3. It has 3 strips of bacon, 3 pieces of sausage( link or patty) and 3 eggs done your way. It also comes with hash browns and a large pancake. You will not leave hungry after this. I will be coming back to try more of the menu. They are only open for breakfast and lunch during the week and only serve breakfast on the weekends. Cash and local checks only. read more

This place is nothing special. Standard breakfast/coffee shop food. I ordered a breakfast burrito and it didn't have any eggs in it..??? I would have said something to the server but she never came back after she delivered our food. The rest of the food was average at best. The place was pretty busy but it is a small space and pretty outdate décor wise. Weirdest things was they do not take credit or debit and have no ATM. Tried a different place close by today. Good old-fashioned, straight forward diner food. Even the waitress was sassy and they use old timey tickets that I am sure are stuck on a carousel in back for the cook. Our breakfasts were plentiful in size and under 9 dollars each. In fact, including the two coffees and tax, our bill was $20.35. No pics of the breakfast because we were too busy eating. Lol. Outstanding comfort food! I had the chicken fried steak omelet. It was every bit as good as it sounds. Crispy chicken fried steak in the morning makes me happy. The pancake that came with it was a true buttermilk pancake. Sweet maple syrup blended so well with it. And how do you go wrong with hash browns?? They were nice and crispy on the top. First off it's cash only or local check, but there is an atm on premise so that's easy to solve. I just went yesterday for the first time and the food was pretty good. I got the French toast combo and it had a very "from home" flavor, the bread was thick and cooked well, and the coffee was hot and tasted good. It was exactly what you would expect from a small cafe like this. It gets 3 stars because I liked the food and would go back, but it didn't stand out much. Pretty decent new breakfast and lunch spot. Came here with a friend and we both got the hot beef. All the tables were full and the decor is your basic new strip mall cafe decor. Some "Home Sweet Home" stuff up on the wall. They brought out the wrong order at first as the waitress misunderstood what I had asked for. I mumble-so it certainly could have been my fault. Food was still out pretty quick after that. It's your basic hot beef and gravy and for the price was pretty much what I expected. One odd thing on this day-the hot beef was the special and up the board it had it's price. The price in on the menu for this was ten cents more expensive. This was our second time trying AJ's and brought our 6 year old nephew, he stayed in his seat but talked a bit when he was deciding what to eat. Our waitress found it necessary to ask the table next to us loudly if he(our nephew) was bothering them. I did not feel like it was her place and we had only been there for all of 10 minutes. We almost decided to leave at that point. Very disappointing and insulting to us as well. The food was also not up to par, underdone French toast and the biscuits and gravy could have been better. I was very disappointed! My chicken fried steak casserole had an unusual taste of fish sticks. which is just weird, because they do not even have fish on the menu. Also, I witnessed one of the chefs in the back preparing instant oatmeal in the microwave then to portion it he used his hand to push oatmeal onto the spatial... umm okay? gross... everything was exceptionally bland. A review from one of my 8th grade students............ The address for AJ'S Cafe is 5146 North 90th Street, Omaha, NE 68134. It's right close to The Humane Society. They are open 6:30 a.m -2:00 p.m Monday- Friday and 7 a.m.- 1p.m on the weekends..They have a different special everyday of the week, which is nice for the people who maybe go there a couple times a week. AJ'S is very kid friendly as well as elderly friendly. They do have a kids menu. The cafe is small but very good. I had never heard of it or seen it until one day when my grandma asked if I had ever been there. I hadn't so she took me there. When we got there I noticed right away that it wasn't a very big place. After looking over the menu, we decided what we were going to get. My grandparents ordered what they had got before which was a Western Casserole. I got toast and hash browns. Then there was my brother who got french toast. All of the food was very good and the servers were all very friendly.They also have really good Cinnamon Rolls! After we were all finished our waitress brought our ticket and the prices were very reasonable. If I remember correctly it was $28.00 for the 4 of us. There was only one thing that I wasn't too thrilled about and that was that since it's small, when the door opens it gets cold. They have tables right up by the door and so if it;s cold or windy then the cold air comes in, but other than that, it's perfect. One thing I really liked was that it was very clean and homey in there. Also, that they are fast, after you order you don't have to wait long at all to get your food and the servers are always checking in on the tables and getting refills. The portion sizes I think are pretty good, I mean for example with the Western Casserole you can get toast with it and they have a bunch of kinds to choose from. They only accept cash and checks, so remember your cash, and if you forget they have an ATM right inside. I hope you go and give it a whirl!
