So this review is more about the ordering service than the actual food, we've been coming here for years when the previous owner had it, and there's no disputing the sushi is very good, the problem is when you try to order from them through a food delivery service, bite squad is who they use, the last three times we have ordered from them it's a confusing mess, you order something and bite squad has to call you and tell you they do not have that or the last time they said they did not know what it was even though iit was on the menu? Even bite squad was confused on this one, long story short you wind up getting your order an hour or later than it was initially set for, very frustrating, who wants to eat at 7:30 at night when you were originally going to eat at six, for that I'm giving them two stars. If you want to use the food service get your act together down there otherwise just stick to your customers in the dining room! With the pandemic we do not eat inside and they do not offer outside seating so unfortunately unless we do take out and pick it up ourselves they've lost a steady customer, So sad read more

As far as sushi is concerned, the food here is excellent, some very unique sushi rolls such as the candy cane, sunset and summer time (Tuna, salmon, mixed greens, masago, scallion, crunch, rolled with rice paper served with spicy sesame oil.). Went on a Saturday around 4, I believe the server was probably the bus boy who was filling in for the servers til they came at 5. Very nonchalant, in no particular rush. All the patrons in the restaurant (about 5 tables ) were saying that the place is usually good, but the service was particularly bad today. Luckily we weren't in a rush, enjoyed the fresh Sushi immensely and eventually the "A" team of servers showed up. For just the sushi 5 stars, but with the combination of the bad service I give it 4 stars. I will definitely try it again at a busier time where I anticipate the service will be better. read more

Okay this is a review about the service more than the food because the food is pretty decent it's just not worth the time or the money. Miso soup took an hour to come out, the waiter even took like 10 min to acknowledge us. We waited an hour and a half for two sushi rolls. Wine never got refilled for the first 45 minutes. I'm sorry but miso soup is literally not even cooked and has three ingredients and should be out in 20min tops. Idk if I will be returning the lady really put me off. read more

We had dinner here on a Saturday night, it wasn't very crowded so it was nice and quiet and the staff was so friendly and attentive. I had the Caterpillar roll(eel tempura, DELICIOUS) and the Tampa roll. I'm not sure what it was about it, but it was the best Tampa roll I've ever had and that's usually a pretty bland, boring roll. The Caterpiller roll was fantastic. My husband had the Catch 13 and the Aki Harvest, both great choices. The salmon nigiri was small but fresh and yummy. Everyone was really friendly and attentive, it had much more of a family restaurant feeling than other sushi restaurants in the area which I really like. Prices were what you'd expect for fresh sushi at a small restaurant on a Saturday night, obviously no specials but we'll be back when they have their happy hours specials which sound great. Was a small little spot and I will not be going back. We were not greeted when we walked in. When another party came in they were greeted and sat and had their order taken before us. They also got their food before us and another table who was there already before us. Their POS systems were down which we were not told till after we got our food which was an hour after ordering. I will say the food was good however the experience and the service was some of the worst I've experienced. When we got our food they had messed up our order and we waited an additional 30 minutes for one sushi roll. By then we were just ready to pay and go. When we wanted to pay they forgot about us (they even said this to us) and finally we were able to leave. If you have 2-3 hours to waste just to sit around and to have your order messed up then this is the spot for you. read more

Tiny dining room but why do you need any more space? This place is very intimate where you feel like you're in someone's home kitchen. Aki is in a shopping plaza and you would totally miss it if you weren't looking for it. We were early for a bite between lunch and dinner. We ordered 3 rolls and loved every one of them. Rock and roll was both of our favorites! They were fine with special orders and changing things around on specific rolls. The server did tell us that sometimes it could take a while to get your sushi out depending on the tickets in front of you. We weren't in a rush so it was not a problem at all, but our meal arrived sooner than I would have thought. I'm happy to have found another good sushi joint close to home. Very small little place at the end of a plaza. It's neat and clean! You walk in and on a Friday night there was only 6 people in there (only a couple people came in and out during the hour and half we where there). Our server was alright we ordered 3 rolls and some tuna sashimi, he forgot to put in the sashimi and the elk sauces on the side. Little things like that make an experience good or great. I have to say the rolls were fresh and pretty good al though probably small issue but the ginger was dry and rolled into such a tight ball you couldn't pull them apart. Fantastic and family-owned, Aki Sushi is the best sushi I've had thus far in the Tampa Bay area. We tried to make a reservation at Samurai Blue, only to be abruptly told by the hostess who answered the phone that they don't accept reservations within an hour of one's phone call. Helpful hint: a curt "no" doesn't exactly make sweet love to my earhole. There's a way to politely inform the caller in a pleasant way of your policies without coming off like a total beeeeyotch. So, I saw that Aki was also nearby and was highly-reviewed on Yelp. Hit the road to luxurious and fashionable Oldsmar to find that it was right next to Salsa, a Mexican joint we had enjoyed in the past. I had made a reservation for 6:30 (at 5:45, which the nice lady who answered the phone assured me was no problem at all), but when we walked in we were told to select one of their few open tables. We did. We had clearly caught them on the tail end of an early-evening dinner rush and it took quite a bit of time to get our beverages and place our order. I'm not knocking them a star for this, however, as clearly the owners are trying to stay financially afloat by acting as their own service staff. It's a tough economy and I can't fault them for this. Well, I guess I could if I was more of an insensitive clod, but I'm not. I want small business owners to succeed, especially when they provide such a spectacular product. The shrimp shumai and spicy tuna/salmon nachos (served on fried wontons, naturally) were a great starter. Our son's fish strips came out shortly after and he devoured them. He proclaimed it the best fish in the Tampa Bay area, but that comes along with being nine years old. The Screamer roll and the Sunset Roll were superb, but the Flaming Ocean was simply amazing. Great presentation and fresh flavors. Friendly owners, cool atmosphere, and above all-great tasting sushi ensured that we will be repeat customers. Now, to address the less than 4 Star reviews. This is a small locally owned business, not a sushi factory. The vibe is like "welcome to our home." While the food does not always come out in 5 minutes, it is worth the wait. If you're used to uptight and stuffy sushi joints, this is not the place for you. My friend said I have to try this place, so we did. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcome. Beimei and her staff treated me as if they knew me forever. Now to the food. We started with tuna, yellow tail and snapper sashimi, and it was excellent. The right temperature, texture and everything. I didn't even have to look at the menu, Beimei asked what flavors I like and just brought stuff to us. My favorite was the catch 13. So often when you eat a roll the flavors mix together. Not with the 13. The first hit was a nice citrus flavor, then a crunchy texture followed by a spice that was there, but not over powering. We had another three or four rolls that were all excellent. This place is amazing!! The sushi is consistently great and the staff is always friendly. I will admit to a slight obsession to the crab rangoon which is always really crispy with great flavours. My girlfriend is not a seafood lover and has never experienced sushi because of it, but the panko chicken roll has given her a new appreciation for sushi and she now craves this place like once a week. Last night was probably the fifteenth time I've eaten at Aki, and while there's plenty of room for a restaurant to slip up over the course of fifteen visits, Aki has never disappointed in any way. I've never had a bad experience, regarding the food or service, and that's the sole reason I'm giving it five stars. Last night's meal was fresh off a viewing of the short documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, so I was particularly excited to, well, eat a bunch of sushi. And eat I did. Before I moved back to Tampa (from Tallahassee), Aki was the one place I'd always make sure to hit up when I'd come home and visit. There has yet to be a single instance where I've felt: "Ehh, the rolls were just a little off tonight." Sure, sometimes the wait times can be a bit lengthy given the fairly limited seating and single sushi chef, and sure -- sometimes a waiter might be a little slow on re-fills if the place is bumping, but the sushi is always on point. The rolls are creative, the fish is always fresh, and the food is consistently stellar. The wonton soup might be the best I've ever had (no, really), the salmon and tuna wonton nachos are incredible (I could probably put down ten orders), and the White Fuji might be the best sushi roll I've ever had; I've still yet to taste anything like it anywhere else, it melts in your mouth. The Candycane, Sunset, and Catch 13 are other favorites. The Kamikaze is also pretty unique, but it's a little heavier compared to the Fuji or Candycane. The owner, Bei Mei, is incredibly friendly and engaging, and greets every guest like they're family. Given the intimate (but super casual) atmosphere, Aki feels very Mom & Pop, and I like the smaller, more laid back ambiance. Michelin reviewers concentrate on the quality, personality and consistency of the food (sorry, still have Jiro Dreams of Sushi on my mind), and while Aki may not be getting any Michelin stars in the near future, they certainly live up to each of those criteria each and every time. read more

Returned to Aki Sushi for a late-ish (8:50pm) dinner on a Saturday night. It was apparent when we walked in that the owner was entertaining a group of friends at one table...and we were the only other table. Ordered 4 rolls, two specialty and 2 basic. All were very tasty with very fresh fish. We both thought the candy cane roll was the best of them all. Shocker was the price tag...$6.95 for salmon and avocado and $7.95 for eel and cucumber. We pay $5 for salmon avocado and $6 for eel, cucumber and avocado at the top sushi restaurant in South Tampa. Not sure why the prices here are so much higher... Fresh sushi and kind server, but didn't love the margaritas from next door being served to the staff and table next to us (they could've offered one to us, right??) and the high price tag. read more

VERY Slow and POOR quality fish. I live in los angeles-- the city with the first introduction of sushi in American, and It is one of my favorite pastimes-- so I'd like to think I've come to learn a thing or two abut the cuisine. The American Owner's Chinese wife makes the sushi by herself.. and takes her sweet timmee They need to hire an actual sushi chef The sushi takes so long to make (we ordered 3 nigiri and 3 roles)--it literally took an hour and 15 minutes!-- and we were only one of two other couples in the restaurant. One of the Nigiri was Eel, Eel is supposed to be served heated. Because it took so long the Eel came to us COLD. I have to say this is by far one of the best sushi places I have found in the Palm Harbor, Clearwater & Oldsmar area! The staff are always aiming to please and the owner is absolutely a doll! They try their absolute best to make every patron feel important and is getting the proper service and attention a customer deserves at any business. The restaurant itself is a little small however they make it feel cozy and comfortable. The food I can't say enough about. They have many assortment of rolls and they all are delicious. Our top picks are the won ton soup, tuna to Tataki for an appetizer. Our favorite rolls are the sunset roll, the candycane roll, the Tokyo roll, and the ever so classic spicy tuna roll. Now that I've been here a few times, tried more rolls (the Catch 13 is my favorite currently), and gotten to chat with the staff a bit, I think like the restaurant even more. I brought my wife here one day and it's now her favorite one in Tampa. In the Tampa area, I used to like Mike's Sushi best (the sake selection helps), but I have to agree with her. I really like this place! I've also been talking with the sushi chef, Will, as I try to work my way through all of the rolls here. Very cool guy and he does great work. Especially if you're there by yourself or just with another person, you should sit up at the sushi bar and say 'hi' to him. The owner is also very nice. She seems very open to feedback -- both good and bad -- which is very nice to see. You can tell pretty quickly after speaking with her that she really loves the restaurant and is passionate about what she does. This place has been in business for quite a while, with many positive reviews from sushi-lovers... so obviously they are doing something right. If you haven't been yet, give it a try. Normally we don't like going to a place right before they close, but they were very nice and welcomed us in. They have the BEST tuna tataki I've ever had! And I've been to a lot of sushi restaurants. WOW! Wish there were a 10 star review for this sushi bar. The absolute most original assortment of sushi flavors I have every had the pleasure eating. Put this gem on your bucket list of places to visit. The owner/chef of Aki is a woman and her ability to marry unusual ingredients is a true art form. Only the second female sushi chef I have ever seen and she outshines all her male and female counterparts. Japanese urban legend has it that female chefs ruin the flavor of the fish because their hands are warmer than a man's hands. I think the story was designed to suppress women from earning more than men in Japan. ;) Order the El Diablo or Roman Holiday you won't be disappointed with this gem of a sushi bar. I thought California had the best sushi until I went to Aki. My next trip to Tampa will include a second visit to this wonderful little place in Oldsmar, FL. read more

Grabbed a Bento Box for $10.99 which comes with 3 veggie spring rolls, 3 dumplings, soup, salad, and a choice of one of their "classic" sushi rolls. Everything came out great and I was satisfied with the quality and amount of food for what I spent. Special recognition for their Miso soup. I'm not a fan of Miso. Most of my experiences have been a less than satisfying romp with a bowl of cloudy water. This was not the case with Aki Sushi's Miso. It was a delicious and flavorful experience. I downed the soup quickly, and almost asked for seconds had my bento box not arrived swiftly after. Will dine here again! read more
