Showed up early for lunch on a weekday. We were about 15 minutes early, before they opened so the young lady sitting next to the door instructed us to come back when they opened. So, we did. We were the only ones there while we ate our lunch. Anyway, the server taking care of us was friendly, informative, personable and professional. The food was a good

Had a reservation on the Friday after Christmas, might not have been necessary. I'm unsure if it was the holiday or cold temps that kept people at home. Space is limited so I'd recommend on a typical weekend/weeknight. Service was very good, they were quick and friendly, everything we ordered was fresh and servings were generous. Bread was served at the table, followed a Caesar for one (split), side of meatball, followed by the main entree which the seafood saffron risotto along with a side of eggplant rollatini. Delicious! Salad was fresh, meatballs were tender, seafood was cooked to perfection and the eggplant rollatini was probably my favorite (forgot a photo).

Nice spot in the north end. There are fancier places but this place tastes good and is warm and friendly. Our group enjoyed it. Large portions Started with large House Salad - Spring mix of baby greens, tomato and onio We had these dishes. Amatriciana - A mixture of pancetta (Italian bacon), onion, pecorino romano cheese, red wine and tomato sauce. Another had the seasonal Pumpkin Ravioli - Finished with a butter sage sauce, honey, brown sugar and sprinkled Romano Cheese And the Chicken Milanese - Boneless breast tender lightly dipped in egg batter, pan-fried and sautéed in white wine lemon butter sauce. The egg batter was very good and very, very fluffy. Chicken was very tender. It was over fettuccine but you can pick whatever kind of pasta you want. Fettuccine is very hard to twirl so I think next time I wouldn't order the fettuccine and just get spaghetti or something else, but it still tasted good. We all had leftovers. I ate my chicken dish over two lunches.

Wow! Staff was friendly, and the ambiance was cute and quaint! As we walked to Al dente, I noticed a few restaurants around it were open but weren't busy, complete opposite of Al dente... that told me we picked a good one! We ordered calamari to start... that was delicious, the tentacles weren't chewy and had a good amount of breading/ coating on them! we ordered the lobster ravioli, veal saltimbocca, vodka penne pasta and Alfredo. All of the dishes were huge and delicious (I would tackle this as family style or split it with someone next time). I would easily come back!

Service very welcoming. Ambiance makes you feel like you're in Italy! Food was very tasty and large portion sizes. I got the bolognese with angel hair pasta. Was very good. If you're looking for parking the area is a bit tight but there is a parking garage near by where you can park and walk it's a short 3 minute walk.

Al Dente is a family owned Italian restaurant in the North End of Boston. This restaurant was recommended to us by a few people that visited, so my friends and I decided to try it. We went during a snow storm, so the restaurant was pretty empty. The service was quick and the staff were super attentive. The ambiance inside is cozy and dimly lit. It made for a good date spot or after work dinner. The menu has a wide variety of pastas that can be ordered handmade. The food was high quality, but definitely expensive. We started by sharing a bottle of wine, which they let us try before pouring full glasses. The red complemented the dishes we ordered well. For one of our entrees, we got the pumpkin ravioli, which was seasoned nicely and paired great with the butter sage sauce on top. We also got the spinach crepes which were unique. I liked the flavor of the sauce paired with the crepes, the crunch of the almonds on top, and the cheese filling inside the crepes. My favorite dish, however, was the pesto with gnocchi. It was fresh and flavorful. Overall, the food was decent, but the portions were small for the price. It is high end dining though, so to be expected. Would recommend this place for a nice work dinner or high quality pasta while in the North End. It's also walkable to all the popular cannoli shops (Mike's, Bova's and Modern) in the area.

I cannot express how much I recommend you stop here for lunch or dinner! From the cozy ambiance, the excellent hospitality, the personable sweetheart of a waitress, the price to portion ratio and finally to the FOOD. I have never had a better experience in the North End! We arrived with a party of 8. Our waitress, Annette I believe, welcomed us and was entirely unfazed by some of our louder party members. She was the definition of welcoming and intuitive! The food, oh my god. We got a variety of dishes from gnocchi to the tenderloin to an Al fresco dish. I personally ordered the shrimp and calamari fra diavolo and it was simply incredible! The freshest calamari I have ever had, the flavors were a delight on the tongue, and it paired so well with the Malbec I had also ordered. After dinner our waitress brought us house made limoncello shots? Just because?? The level of hospitality is unmatched and you can bet that the local members of our party will happily return as soon as we can. I highly recommend this place, please consider a visit!

Recently came back and had a great meal. Had a Friday night reservation and was seated right away. The drinks and food came out so quickly. Would still highly recommend the lobster ravioli!

The North End is always such a stunner for Italian food! Came here with friends and family a few times - ordered eggplant parm, chicken parm, pesto pasta, calamari, etc - all has been great! Only tip -- get a reservation, but try not to go too early in the day. I found that when I swung by during lunch instead of dinner, the tomato sauce was a bit on the thinner/waterier side. Dinner's tomato sauce was thicker and extra flavorful - might take some time for the sauce to reduce!!

This restaurant is listed as having happy hour special or early bird specials. I retained photos to post. Two lady servers were seated. The one who greeted me at the door, to whom I asked if they had specials, was polite. The seated ladies were rude and harshly told me they didn't offer specials as if I were asking for a handout.

I was in town looking for a cosy (not white table cloths), family Italian restaurant and this hit the nail on the head. I had the eggplant parmesan at the recommendation of our server and it was out of this world flavorful. Best part was that all of our portions were giant--enough for leftovers the next day!

This is a small cute Italian restaurant! We got the grilled calamari and it was super fresh and delicious! I got the lobster ravioli and my dad got the veal Valdostana, which we both really liked! The food came out fast and the portions were large. Waiter was nice and attentive. This was an authentic Italian restaurant!

Ask the Community - Al Dente Restaurant

Are they offering outdoor dining at all i know its a small street and area but figured id ask?

Yes! We were there July 31st and outdoor dining was an option at that time. Enjoy!

For the catering menu, how much does the half size feed and how much does the full size feed?

The half size feeds half of the full size

Was it noisy? Was it easy to have a conversation without having to yell?

It is a very small place. So tho not necessarily noisy others can hear your conversation. Food is excellent!

    Is there valet parking?

Parking garages but they aren't close. Quite a ways away actually. Better option is to take a taxi or ride share to the restaurant if need be. Or public transport.

You're most likely be sharing a table with other diners. The mussels in a spicy flavorful red sauce were cooked perfectly. They only came with 2 small pieces of grilled bread. If you like to dunk your bread and soak up all the yummy broth, ask for more bread when you order. The fries dipped in there are also really good! Lobster roll was delicious and juicy on a buttery brioche bun. So much lobster! And the fries are so crispy and salty! My friend ordered the North End Cioppino that comes in a rice spicy brodo with clams, mussels, shrimp, and 2 types of fish (I forget what they were). The broth was ok and the whole shrimp was a chore to eat. The mussel sauce would've been better. Note: one small dark bathroom at end of bar Parking is very hard to find as most are resident. It was Friday afternoon into evening so makes sense. We came back late night around 9:30pm and waited for like 5 minutes before being seated. The place is small. You're basically sharing dinner with the stranger next to you with how close you're sitting. Thankfully our strangers were cool lol. We tried a variety of oysters, cocktail shrimp, and the razor clams which we heard were amazing. All I'm gonna say is, I would have been annoyed if I waited in line for hours for the items we got. The cocktail shrimp was decent - it was a good size, juicy, and delicious. The razor clams were a miss. Rubbery and too many other things in the dish overshadowing the clams. We got two different kinds of fresh clams which my husband said were okay. I'm not a fan of fresh clams. The oysters were good, but after having been to Row 34, I can't justify standing in line for oysters in a place that doesn't have much else worth trying.

Our first visit to Boston. Our first visit to North End. We used Yelp! To pick out a dinner spot…read morebased on ratings and restaurant description. Even before we got to our spot, we saw this tiny little place with an open air kitchen and a line of people almost a block long waiting to get in. My wife commented, "that's the place we should be eating....". Now our dinner wasn't bad, but truthfully, being 1/2 Sicilian, I've been eating home cooked Italian food my whole life. It takes a pretty great plate of pasta to move the needle for me. Again, the spot we picked was fine, but I kept thinking about what my wife had said earlier.... The next evening we weren't in the North End, but we found out the place everyone was waiting in line for was called The Daily Catch, and the REAL great news was they had a 2nd Waterfront location close to where we were hanging.. we snagged a table for two and had the meal we were looking for the first night. P.J. was our server and he was fucking great. Friendly, funny and honest, he made great recommendations and we were NOT disappointed. I ordered the Aolio Olio with calamari and black squid ink pasta. Absolutely amazing! My wife ordered the Scallops and Linguine in white sauce and again, it was lights out. Four days later we returned to North End - for our last day in town - and remembering the line, we decided lunch might be the safer bet to try and avoid the crowds. Imagine our surprise when we were seated by P.J., who waited on us during our first visit. As cool as their waterfront location was (it was definitely bigger), their North End spot has just got this vibe.... Now the weather was PERFECT during our lunch - sunny and in the 70's. We sat just off the street and ordered the Lobster Fra Diavolo (P.J.'s recommendation again). Again, he knocked it out of the park... and the serving for one person was more than enough for two. It was literally one of the best plates of food I've ever eaten. The Daily Catch in North end literally seats 22 guests and is cash only. There were three staff working the tiny space, and the open air kitchen and super friendly chef (didn't get his name) all added to what ended up being a truly unique experience. This place is no joke. If you're in Boston, and you want fresh and delicious Italian seafood... look no further.

Go for the full size and not the half order. You will thank me for it later. We added scallops to it but honestly the pasta itself was so good already, the scallops didn't really add much to it even though they were very well cooked scallops. We also tried the Littleneck Siciliano (which is a plate of clams in a lemon? sauce) and that was also delicious. The last entree we tried was the linguine with clams and calamari. This was good but nowhere nearly as good as the black squid ink pasta. I didn't give this restaurant 5 stars because seating was cramped, very limited workers, and the wait was long for getting a table and food. I would avoid this restaurant for large groups or families with kids. I really wish they had a reservation system but I can see how hard that will be with the few workers they have. Oh, and don't forget your cash as it is CASH ONLY.

Our wait staff was incredibly attentive without ever being overbearing, and the whole experience was truly out of this world. I started with the Golden Tide, which was a delicious combination of pineapple and orgeat flavors. Refreshing, tropical, and a great way to kick things off. For appetizers, I ordered fresh raw oysters and the scallop ceviche, I honestly don't know much about choosing oysters, so my waitress basically gave me a mini oyster class and I was impressed by how knowledgeable she was! She explained the differences between oysters, including how some are creamy and briny while others are much saltier, almost like taking a bite straight out of the ocean. Such a cool experience and something I genuinely appreciated. And that scallop ceviche? Hands down, the BEST ceviche I've ever had. The scallops were incredible, and I loved that they served it with root vegetable chips instead of the typical tortilla chips. Sweet potato chips added such a unique flavor and texture. Absolutely delicious! For dinner, I had the sumac-crusted tuna with haricots and assorted vegetables, and it was fantastic. The tuna was flavorful, beautifully prepared, and paired perfectly with the vegetables. Between the food, the atmosphere, the energy, and especially the knowledgeable and attentive service, Row 34 delivered a dining experience that I'll definitely remember. This is exactly the kind of restaurant that makes dining out feel like an experience rather than just a meal.
