I ordered the dinner no. 1! 2 plump cheese-filled enchiladas with a chili con carne sauce with just the right amount of heat, chalupa with loads of salad ( yea), guacamole, cheentzy bit of queso ( Hey! We have been going to Alamo Cafe for decades. It's been consistently good for many years. Our most recent visit, at the I10 location, was March 30. It was very disappointing. The tortillas, as always, were fresh and wonderful. That's pretty much all that was good. We had both frozen margaritas and on the rocks. Neither had much flavor. Tasted very watered down. Chili con queso was tasty, but very watery. We had three different fajita dinners. All were very small portions and not up to our expectations from previous visits. Overall, a very disappointing visit to one of our favorite places. Service was friendly and efficient. It was telling that we were there during happy hour and the place was almost empty. I've always loved Alamo Cafe on 10. But sitting in certain areas deprives you of a good dinner. Last week we were there on a Monday. Wow really busy. We had to get up to find people just to get waited on. There too many blunders to get in to. Being busy shouldn't mean bad food. My husband ordered the burrito with brisket. After finally coming he couldn't crack the tortilla. The brisket was hard as a rock. I ordered the chicken fried steak which is usually awesome. Well...mine came with broccoli with the cheese on the side(Thank goodness). The broccoli was molded. Never would have known if cheese was on it. We had to to beg for everything we got. We partly have to blame the kitchen for letting this go out. Bottom line...BEING BUSY DOSE NOT MEAN JUST SLOP IT OUT! Managers inspect your food when its delivered from companies. 06/18/2024 9:19 is when we received received the bill And we both got food poisoning Mikayla was the worst server we have ever had. We got our food pretty fast, but our food was soggy. It looks like it's been sitting there for hour or two. The food was very disgusting. The chicken had a bitter taste the food was very cold and we got a beer and we asked her to dresses and she did not .never got refills even though she told us she would and every time we needed something she would keep helping the other Table as fast as possible. she took forever for us. And she only had two tables which was us and another one. When it was time for us to pay for the bill, we waited at the table for 20 minutes and she never came to pick up our card so we got up to went to the front to see if someone would take our payment and as soon as she saw walking out, she said have a good day and then she come running around the counter coming at us to get the card she kept forgetting what we needed and We never received it. I have a 50th wedding anniversary celebration at San Pedro location of Alamo Cafe in San Antonio. Went I reserved a room for the celebration they agreed in writing to provide a cable to connect a slide presentation from a laptop to their TV screen in the room. I paid to have a slide presentation made for this celebration. When my AV person tried to set up the show, there was no cable available. Also the service was atrocious. There was one server to take drink orders for 30 people. The buffet was delivered an hour after the start of the event. These problems got the schedule for the celebration out of whack. When I asked for compensation for the cost of making the slideshow which could not be delivered they said that it was an axillary service that they provided and thus they would not provide any compensation. It was written in the banquet service provisions. I likely could have taken the issue to small claims court with success but there are better things to do when you are 76 years old. I doubt that Alamo Cafe can deliver satisfactory service for any event that you schedule. You would be foolish to expect them to do so. read more

I went there yesterday with a group of 9 people to celebrate a friend's visit to San Antonio. It was the first time I had been there in quite a while. I used to go a lot back in the 1990's, but as the area I live in developed more over time, there was no need to travel that far for restaurants. That said- I have always enjoyed Alamo Cafe. On this visit, I had the Ensalada with shrimp and the lime vinaigrette. It was a huge plate of freshness with at least a dozen perfectly cooked and deliciously seasoned shrimp. I was more than satisfied with it. I also noticed that I was the last one eating at the table. I savored every bite and took my time. Everyone else at the table had something different. Everything looked good, and they all seemed satisfied. I did hear one person say her refried beans were tasteless. That was the only negative comment. I hope I have the name right... Our server was Toby. He kind of looked like a young Josh Groban. He was a very good server. He was very attentive and really knew what he was doing. read more

When we got home (25-30 mins away) we realized they forgot to add a kids meal and an a la carte item; it was total from $6-7 or so. I called, only looking for a refund. When I called they passed me on to their manager, Greg. I told Him what happened. We realized only a kids meal was missing ($3.39?). He immediately apologized and asked what I would like for him to do. He offered delivery (on a curbside order). I said if you're offering, sure, thanks! Not only was this delivered but Greg delivered it himself- for a $3 meal. If I were him I just would refunded my money. But not at Alamo Cafe. Greg went above and beyond! Thank you, Greg! I went Saturday 2-17-2024 with family members that had been there before. I personally thought the service and food were below standards. The ones that recommend the place said the place used to be good. When we were seated the server said the dish washer was behind and they didn't have small plates. My daughter ordered to different cheese dips. So my wife wanted some kind of plates to share the dips. Grudgingly the server brought out wet full size plates and left. We started wiping off the plates and noticed the plates had food on them. We didn't say anything just ate our nasty food and left. Never going back. read more

I've been coming to Alamo Cafe for the past couple of years and was inspired to write this review after having lunch there today. I'm a big fan of their fajitas and I love that you can order fajita tacos a la carte. The fajita meat is always juicy and flavorful. Fresh tortillas, chips and salsa come with your meal. You could easily fill up on tortilas and their queso - so yum!!! I'll admit that I have asked for extra tortillas to take home. I've always had good service at this restaurant and the wait time has been pretty good as well. Negatives: I honestly do not like their chips and salsa nor their tortilla soup. I find the chips just too crispy and flavorless and the salsa is just too tomatoey, and the tortilla soup? SALTY and I've tried it on more than one occasion thinking that maybe it was just a fluke. Nope, that's just the way they make it. Today I ordered the Chicken Fajita Panchos - crisp tostadas with refried beans, melted cheese, guacamole and chicken. So Yum! Wanting a drink after an intense day at work, I decided to try this place near my hotel. I was pleasantly surprised to see people making tortillas from scratch, and I have always been a fan of this. Happy hour ends a bit early in my opinion (only an hour after people get off of work at 5PM), so better high tail it here! The margaritas at $4 each were not bad (drank two). They were a bit small, but strong enough. You get your choice of frozen or on the rocks. Chips and salsa are complimentary, and these were on point. At least the texture of the salsa was better than Ajuua (not so watery). I also asked for a couple of plain tortillas, and they were alright. I was surprised at how fluffy they were for a homemade version. I have had better homemade flour tortillas at El Mexsal in Houston. I ordered the beef chimichangas ($10.59), and these were small, about the length of my palm. This is topped with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream in strips (like a Mexican flag), and I hardly tasted any cheese. It seemed proportionally speaking, there was more tortilla compared to meat. I felt there was very little beef, and perhaps this is why I ended up eating the whole plate, all of the chips (with salsa), and plain tortillas to fill me up. As a result, I give 3 stars. Originally I was going to give two stars because I've had better chimichangas at Javi's in Austin or Chuy's in Houston. However, the bartender was always accommodating (sat at the bar), and she didn't charge me extra for tortillas. I realize there shouldn't be an extra charge for this in Texas, ever, but you'd be surprised. My meal cost $20.12 including tax. Not bad! read more

Alamo Cafe serves some great Tex-Mex food. This place does get busy and parking can be a challenge even with the good size parking lot. Right as you walk in you can smell fresh flour tortillas it can be because they have several people making the tortillas on a conveyer when you walk in. The only bummer is since they are sometimes busy there can be a wait for a table especially during dinner. What I like about this place is when you are seated the waiter/waitress brings out hot fresh tortillas with a side of butter packets. The portions are average and sometimes slim. I personally enjoy the fish tacos. Overall clean place, good food, and friendly staff. read more

Where to start? When we arrived all the lights out front were off at night so we weren't even sure they were open. Should have left right then but we went to the door. Thus begins the most disgusting Tex-mex experience of my life... in San Antonio, well known for amazing Tex-mex. No one greeted us at the front. I had to poke around to find someone. She was nice but sat us at a dirty table... what? We asked them to clean it and the guy pulled out a brown rag and wiped it off. No care given to covid cleanliness procedures. Eventually a waiter came and took our orders. Food took at least 30 minutes to arrive. Holy hell... I generally order cheese enchiladas the first time at a new place because they're so simple to make but easy to screw up. Screw up they did. They were old. Like... sitting in a kitchen pan for hours old. Covered in what tasted exactly like wolf brand chili out of a can. Not a mole sauce. So f'ing gross. I sent it back it was so bad and I can count on one hand how many times I've sent food back after having eaten out thousands of times over the years. No one liked their food. Even my daughter that's happy with a McDonald's cheeseburger thought it was gross. The chips were stale and covered in grease that tasted days old, if not weeks. The salsa was absolutely the worst. Like water with massive amounts of salt. Saltiest salsa on planet earth. The tortillas were the ONLY half way good thing there but were thick, like pancakes. Just such a shame. Tex-mex is easy to make incredibly delicious but Alamo Cafe doesn't seem to give 2 craps. How this place has anything other than 1 star reviews is shocking after our experience. The waiter didn't care that we were grossed out and even told us "heh, I don't eat here" when I brought up the poor quality. Seriously? Did you just say that? They removed my nasty enchiladas from the tab but left everything else that we didn't finish. I had hoped the manager would just comp the filth they served us to avoid the scathing review but he didn't. So here we are. Avoid this turd and go eat slop from a pig trough. Tell you what...if you're there while they're making fresh, hot off the stove tortillas...those warm beauties alone might just be worth an extra YELP star... Having said that...I prefer the location on 281 (ambiance is a bit nicer) but I haven't had bad experiences here. Service is always decent...but for the most part, the food is nothing to write home about. It's totally a Tex-Mex joint. Those that know good Mexican food and then experience Tex-Mex know what I mean. It's always a small stab to the heart when you order queso in/on a burrito and it ends up looking like they poured melted Kraft singles on your food. Best tortilla soup I've ever had. For a few extra dollars you get a taco with that tortilla soup which is equally as good. The chips and salsa do not disappoint and the service is quick and courteous.
