This place is dirty. That's the first thing I'll say. The food was mediocre. I ordered the chimichanga and it was just ok. I grabbed my own alcohol wipes off the hostess stand while no one was around and wiped down the bar where I was sitting. The filth left behind on the wipe was gross. I was also brought a soda in a filthy glass. I used the same alcohol wipe to wipe the inside of the glass to see if it was just water stained or an actual substance. It was an actual substance that came off on the wipe. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. San Antonio is full of other Tex Amex restaurants and this place isn't good. I also watched a waiter take a margarita glass from behind the bar, rinse it in the sink, and then use the dirty rag hanging out of his back pocket to dry the glass off then dip it in the salt. Pretty good! Ordered the chicken fajitas via door dash. Food was fresh and still warm. The only downfall was the fajitas only had onion, no bell pepper. But the chicken was fresh (not chewy) and it came with plenty of chips and salsa. I ordered steamed veggies on the side and would pass on the next time. Have been craving Alamo Cafe since coming to San Antonio. This is one of my favorite places to eat for Tex Mex food. There was no wait to be seated and the service was good. The only reason I would come back is that the staff is really nice, and they have some AMAZING tortillas that are all you can eat and free. But other than that, I'd probably steer away from Alamo because the food is pretty subpar compared to other Tex-mex places in SA. Or, I would go and order some queso and just eat the free tortillas with queso. They leave out bowls of salsa on the table, which is fast and efficient, but it makes you wonder how long the salsa has been sitting outside. There's plenty of seating though, which is nice, so you aren't crammed or waiting in line for forever. As for food, I ordered the burrito dinner. There isn't much to say other than it seems like most of the food comes out of a can (I'm sorry if that offends). They threw a bunch of chili on the burrito, and it was severely over-salted. Except, we noticed a mounted TV on the wall.... Is this TV always on FOX news? This type of programming is controversially slanted. **WARNING *** Food is still good, HOWEVER! They are NOT practicing safe COVID sanitizing or any other kind of sanitary cleaning procedures! Second time in the past two weeks I have visited this location. The first time I thought was a fluke. The booth we sat at smelled like a dirty mildew rag had cleaned the table. Last night we visited again, and would you know, we had to ask to move to another booth because of the same smell. Second smelled as well but not over powering. AND THEN, we saw with our own eyes the routine the busboy was using to clean the tables and booths as customers left. Same dirty rag for each and not one used any sanitation procedures, not even some sort of spray cleaner. DISGUSTING and now fearful we might catch something since we sat in such a booth. Ok I've been eating here since 1988. This place used to be one of the best tex-mex restaurants in town. Not any more. My last three visits have all been the same. Just bad food. Today the tortilla soup (large bowl) had about three small, wait, very small bites of chicken and just brown broth. Nothing else. Hostess was really rude, very standoffish and not customer oriented. However, our waitress Brenda turned our experience around as soon as she was able to wait on us. Could tell she wasn't told about our table due to the hostess so we waited for a longer than usual, no problem though, she took our order with diligence and Food was excellent, brought out with hot plates and cooks did a real awesome job. Brenda was all smiles the entire time and kept an eye on anything we needed, gave us adequate amount of time to talk and eat. All around, Brenda turned our experience around and was able to make for a pleasant experience. Will go back again and hopefully be waited on by the same waitress :) read more

Had a wonderful meal (s.) Three of us ordered fajitas and they were prepared perfectly. The meat was tender and delicious. The flour tortillas were excellent. They make them fresh where you can see them being made. I've been to many Mexican restaurants all over the country and this one tops most of them. As far as the tortillas go, I've never had better. The other person with us ordered a burrito meal. Since she does not eat meat she just had it with beans and cheese. She asked for the chihuahua cheese instead of yellow or Monterey Jack. She said it was white, creamy and rich just like in Mexico. The sopapillas with honey were luscious. Overall a great meal and definitely a great price. read more

Fresh and fast delivery, I have been craving Tex mex food and was stuck at the apartment with maintenance and decided to place a delivery order through Grubhub. I grabbed the chicken flautas, rice and charro beans, two complimentary tortillas and chips and queso ! I jumped in the shower thinking I had some time when mid shampoo rinse my food has arrived ! I've learned eating out that every restaurant has their good days and bad, good plates and bad. Today the carne guisada was great. Not to much flavor...... just right. I personally don't care for their rice but it's ok. Our waiter has been employed here for a long time that I know because I've seen him here years back.. I've lived in San Antonio for almost 5 years and the one place I take every out of town visitor is Alamo Cafe. After my visitors leave, they continue to tell me how much they can't wait to come visitor again and eat more Alamo Cafe... and I get it, this place knows what they're doing. Go for the out of this world homemade tortillas (that should be buttered and then dipped in queso, trust me) and stay for the everything else. I love that they've even added a "mini" queso to the menu which is perfect for 2 people. The small size is good for 3 or 4 people, but dangerous for 2! I've never heard of anything on the menu being a disappointment. My go to is the avocado chicken salad, I don't know how they do it, but even their salad is incredible, so fresh and delicious! Love their soft tacos, I split it with one beef and one chicken, both excellent. Shrimp and spinach quesadilla is awesome. Everyone raves about the fist tacos. They also serve my mom's favorite margaritas in San Antonio, and I've thrown a ton of margaritas at her during her visits. Prices are very reasonable, staff is always friendly, only negative is parking can be tricky because it's such a popular spot! I recommend avoiding rush times and hit them up for early or late lunch or dinner to avoid the crowds! read more

Somehow this place has always been a San Antonio staple for my mom and her other friends over 40- every time someone comes into town from high school, they inevitably have lunch here. I've never understood why- I mean, after watching the lady make tortillas for about five minutes, you've pretty much seen it all. But the BF and I gave them another chance recently. Mostly because they were open until 11PM on a week night, which is virtually unheard of unless you're a greasy diner. Not this place isn't greasy, but I'm getting off topic. This place is priced better than I remember. Service left a bit to be desired, but then again, we went in 15 minutes before close so I guess that might be expected. Menu is a mix of Mexican, Texan, and Tex Mex: nachos and margaritas, chile relleno and brisket, and chicken fried steaks and burgers. Basically, if you can't find something to eat here then you're probably not even hungry. But that's what the $4.50 house margs are for! Needless to say, yes I did have one, and it wasn't super strong but it wasn't bad either- I'm tired of seeing restaurant margs that start at $8 everywhere lately! BF ordered the aforementioned chile relleno, and loved it. I tried it too, and was taken aback- it was actually really, really good! Possibly the best I've had in SA: not over battered, not soggy, not bland- like all the "authentic Mexican" places on Broadway. It was crisp, hot, and spicy, with plenty of flavor, the right amount of cheese, and plenty of kick to it. Meanwhile, I was kickin' it with my marg and a brisket quesadilla- meat, shredded cheese, barbeque sauce. Simple and delish, just like I used to make myself for an after-school snack using leftovers. I usually love Alamo Cafe but today's experience left A LOT to be desired! First, I'm disabled, walking with a cane, the manager seats us as far away from the door as she possibly can. Ok. Whatever. She gets our drink order and brings it to us and tells us our waitress will be right with us. Our waitress eventually gets to us and takes our order. We wait, and wait, and wait. A full 25 minutes ( I know it was 25 minutes because I sent a text to someone right after we placed our order so I looked at the time) our waitress comes and tells us some story about the printer not sending the orders to the kitchen. It wasn't only our table. A little over ten minutes later our food comes out. I had ordered the chicken fried steak with the mashed potatoes, gravy on the side please. Well, the gravy was NOT on the side, the meat was cold. So were the potatoes. In fact when I touched the potatoes, they had been sitting on that plate so long there was a thin crust on them. You know the kind of crust that starts to settle on real mashed potatoes after they have sat for a while... I refused to eat or pay for that mess!! You would think the manager would've given a bit of a discount on my husband's meal since we had to wait Soo loooonnnnngggg... Nope. That's okay. The tortillas were still delicious!!! read more

My kids really enjoyed watching them make tortillas. They were so good with butter spread on them and be sure to try the queso! It's unforgettable! I preferred using the fresh tortilla to slop up the sauce. I've even been looking for a way to make it at home with some HEB tortillas. I ordered one sour cream & one green enchilada and they were tasty. The cheese they use is salty & tangy but melts well. The chicken was tender, shredded white meat which is always something I look for at a mexican restaurant. I can't stand tough meat or chicken that doesn't appear to be real chicken. :) read more

My first visit at Alamo Cafe was good. I'd always heard about the abundance of tortillas and chips they provide and they did not disappoint. The service was great. And the food was fresh; however, whomever made the guacamole should've noticed the big pieces that were not ripe and removed them. I initially thought it was some the avocado pit but then I realized it was a very hard piece of avocado. Thank goodness I did not bite into it. Also, the beef on the Fajita Dinner Plate was cut into small pieces. I'm used to eating pieces that small on those small Street Tacos. I guess larger slices of Beef Fajitas are for those sizzling platters. read more

Oh Mo Caf. Alamo Cafe, aka Mo Caf, has been a staple of my adolescence. The restaurant is adorable. They have two stories for seating. I like the second story because it's a bit quieter. The first story is nice and spacious so you don't feel like you're eating in someone's lap. On the weekends they have Mariachis walking around the restaurant which is pretty fun. The margaritas are fantastic and not that expensive. The food isn't the best I've ever had but it's pretty good and it's not crazy expensive either. This is a great place for big groups and celebrations. read more

Alamo Cafe is not bad but not one of the best Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. We decided to come here after we showed up at Papasittos and the wait was 45 minutes. This place was dead and it was great not having to wait 45 minutes to be sat for food, so in that we were pretty excited. The place is really casual inside, nothing fancy (which can be good or bad depending on what you're expecting). Our waitress was really friendly to us and made sure that we had what we needed and drinks were always refilled. We had a baby with us at the time and she was really nice to him when most don't even acknowledge. The food was OK but nothing spectacular, definitely not on par with Papasitto's but nothing can beat that in my opinion. All-in-all, a good experience. I would probably go back without a doubt, food was fine and the price for it was definitely reasonable. A good place to go for Mexican food! read more
