The service is always the best. They people that work there really strive to ensure I have a good experience. During the weekend, expect to wait from 5 to 10 minutes. If you do not want to wait, this little restaurant has a counter where you can watch all the happenings of meals being prepared. It is amazing that they can keep everything together to get me a terrific tasting meal. My favorite for breakfast is the the oatmeal pancakes and the scones. Do you ever have breakfast somewhere and feel like you want to stay for lunch? That's Alana's. Alana's is tiny, but what they lack in size they make up for in hospitality and warmth. We got one of the last tables, because even at 9:30 the place was already packed. A great sign. There can't have been more than two waitresses in the entire place, but ours was warm, friendly, and funny. She kept stopping at our table to make little jokes and making sure Roomie's coffee cup was full and we were satisfied. Roomie ordered a cheese scramble with a mango/coconut scone, and a cup of coffee, while I had a Florintine (spinach, provolone and mild Italian sausage) scramble with egg whites, with a mixed berry scone and a glass of apple juice. The apple juice was telling of the type of restaurant we had walked into. This was no diner serving Mott's apple juice, this was fresh squeezed unfiltered juice, sweet and light. The scones were good, but the mango/coconut just didn't come out in Roomie's. Mine had large chunks of dried fruit in it, but Roomie's might as well have been plain. Portion sizes were great, I find that often when I go out for breakfast I end up leaving half the food on the plate because they just gorge you on food. Not at Alana's, portions were large but not overly so and the food was delicious. My scramble was great, the spinach was fresh and the sausage flavorful. The potatoes are covered in a herb mixture that includes rosemary, and I thought they were really nice. Roomie likes hers with gravy or mixed into an omelet, so they were a little dry for her. All in all we ended up feeling full in the most pleasant of ways, and our waitress kept us smiling the entire time, even with a whole restaurant of people to take care of. read more

A-OK...we had to wait for quite a while to be seated. We stood pretty close outside the front door waiting for our name to be called for about 35 minutes. We checked in once with the host and he said "probably 10 more minutes" but then we noticed amother couple who arrived after us getting seated before us. We checked back in at 35 minutes and were told -"your table will be coming up soon" - I saw his list and saw my name with a line through it and said "that's my name, its already crossed off" and he said, no that's someone else but then looked around the page for my name and said "how about this table?" and seated us right away. You have to really be on top of them to make sure you hear when they call your name. That being said, the food was good, I had the eggs florentine which was nice and got the toast. The salt and pepper shaker tops had been switched, so when we poured the salt it came out pretty fast but luckily had poured it into my hand, be careful of that too! read more

Even though I moved out of the peninsula, I'll still make the trek back every couple of months to hang out at my favorite brunch place in the 650. The people always remember me, despite my sparse appearances, and are just so lovely and warm. By far the oatmeal and the oatmeal pancakes are the way to go, i bought the mix to make at home and it's just not the same. The place is fairly small (smaller than the RWC one), couldn't really do more than a group of 4, and since it's far enough away from the other brunch spots on the ave- the wait isn't that bad. read more

There are times when I like to have lunch by myself...I find it peaceful...Alana's is a lunch I very much enjoyed by myself! I sat at the bar, did not have to wait to be seated, and after a few min I got asked for my order. The lady taking my order was super nice and I got a salad with chicken. Man it was pretty huge!! And supper yummy of course! I only ate about 2/3 of it and I was stuffed! When the waiter came to pick up my plate she asked if I wanted dessert! First time here for breakfast!! I checked out their menu before and had 2 egg whites with potatoes. Also they had the highest recommendation of the Swedish Oatmeal pancakes (short stack 2 pcs). Alana's is great for a weekend breakfast. The menu is somewhat limited (compared to Stacks, for example), but they have some selections that you may not find elsewhere. I think most diners would find something they like. I'm a fan of the Swedish oatmeal pancakes. They're very tasty and filling - the short-stack would be plenty for most people! I also like the California and Mediterranean egg scrambles. Their coffee is really good, too, and the attentive waitstaff always makes sure your cup is full. If you'll have 3+ people in your group, get there early (before 10) to avoid a long wait. If you're just 1 or 2, you usually don't have to wait long (or at all) for a seat at the counter. I decided to make the drive down from San Francisco to try this place out seeing that it had great reviews and that I truly love the city of Burlingame. However I am very disappointed with the service, I not only had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated.. I had to wait over 35 minutes for my food. Keep in mind that no one even checked up on me the entire time that I am just sitting here waiting, or even gave me a heads up that it would take this long to begin with. When my food finally arrived, it was room temperature and no one even checked if it was up to par. When I'm in the mood for pancakes this place hits the spot. Love their Swedish oatmeal pancakes with lingonberry. However, today my delicious pancakes tasted a bit off. I guess they made the pancakes on the same surface as eggs or some kind of meat because I kept getting savory bites that kept killing the flavor. The food and wait staff have always been high quality so I was disappointed today on Mother's Day for it to have faltered. I have always generously tipped and contributed to the GoFundMe for staff during COVID in 2020. As a regular weekend patron, I always sit at the counter. Today, with Mother's Day I, and a lot of people waiting like me to get in before it opened, there was a sign in clipboard outside and so I signed in as party of one. I asked wait staff if I could sit at the counter and three different staff members told me to sign in as some other party (parties of 4, 6 and 8) before me might wish to also sit at the counter. I responded to them I did so and I happily waited. All parties before me elected to sit outside and so I was permitted to enter and sit at the counter as the first patron there and second "party" inside the whole restaurant. I ordered an expresso drink with my breakfast and it never came. While I waited, four single men came in, seconds or minutes after me, and none were asked to sign in and wait, but all permitted to go right in and sit at the counter and all of them received their drinks period and did so before me. Puzzled, I asked the owner standing closest to me a foot away making all drinks if she was making my drink and she responded she must have given it to a "regular" (another man) at the end of the counter who always orders the same thing I do - not I guess recognizing how many times I too as a "regular" have placed the same order over the last decade..often with my mother in tow with me, but even after her passing, still coming in honor of her on Mother's Day, when one might think women in general, and the only woman sitting at the counter might be treated the same! Even with the mixup, the owner still helped several others before preparing my drink and did not offer water or anything else as I waited and ate my food! Even with this disappointing experience, I happily tipped generously again today. Hopefully, all will be better next time. read more

I picked this restaurant based on the Yelp reviews because I wanted to impress a friend from out of town. I was a little embarassed. The service was fine, but the food was mediocre at best. I had the Mediterannean Tuna salad, which was a real letdown. I've never had olives in tuna sandwich and that is not a good combo, plus the tuna was dry. yey for a random saturday brunch. we didn't have to wait too long at this location. the decor is sunny and comfortable, as if you are in someone's home. and the service was attentive. and wow Oatmeal pancake. It's the perfect companion to one of their savory dishes and if you're there with a group it's a perfect plate for the group to share. Love Alana's quiche and have had at it many home luncheons. I ordered 3 for pick up a week ahead of time. I asked if they could be hot when picked up and was told " no". That all I had to do was reheat. Well they were FROZEN! Not only that the directions say tot cut each quiche, place individual pieces on a cookie sheet to heat for 30 minutes and then serve. You want me to cut 50 pieces individually to take out and reheat???? I called back to ask about reheating the entire quiche and that wasn't going to work for me and was met with hostility and was told " then don't heat it up! Um IT'S FROZEN! Who knows how old these quiches are. For the price I paid per quiche (over $50) i expect way more! Horrible service! Never again! read more

I came here this morning for brunch with some friends. A little after 10AM on a Friday morning, we had to wait a few minutes before we were seated. It's a small place, so seating is limited, and apparently there's a decent brunch crowd downtown in Burlingame on a Friday morning. I saw some pictures of the two egg breakfast substituting the side of bread for a pancake, but when I inquired about it, the waitress said they don't do that anymore. Three of us got pancakes (one with bananas and two with warm cinnamon apples). My other friend got a scramble with coffee cake as her bread. I wasn't too sure what to expect from the pancakes, but since that seemed to be the popular choice, I had to try it! My short stack (two pancakes) were surprisingly moist and and the warm cinnamon apples were a nice complement. We came here around noon and of course they're busy. My friends and I came for a girls brunch on a Sunday and we're seated in a timely manner. The only downfall was we were outside in the bipolar weather but it was better than being inside where it's small so it was stuffy. The customer service was amazing. We had 3 different people constantly checking on us, making sure our food was brought quickly, that our food was delicious and making sure we were comfortable in the ugly weather that day. I think this place is super cute and unique. My idea of American breakfast is a bagel and coffee (don't even get me started on the breakfast I grew up on), so I'm not often courted with the idea of brunch unless it's been a while since I've seen someone. Even in such a case, I like to recommend dinner, so I can get dolled up and have a drink. My sister's right, I'm a bit of a lush at times... I know, bloody marys are great and mimosas are classy but I definitely feel that hangover residue when I am dining at 10AM and waiting an hour in line for a meal that will make me go right back to sleep. At Alana's there was no wait. Not typical, supposedly. I didn't care, the 6 of us sat down and I was the only one that didn't order a scone or an omelette. Hell yea for nonconforming! WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE SWEDISH OATMEAL PANCAKE? Is it supposed to taste... SOUR? Was the buttermilkused in excess?? I dunno, but that really turned me off. The pancake itself was fine but really sour ... and a bit runny on the inside. Apparently, the sourness was so strong that even when I tried some of the eggs benedict, the sour taste would not go away. Not sure what everyone is raving about. The wait isn't great and because it's so popular you get hassled to leave once you finish eating. Went here for breakfast with a friend. While Alana's is quite a small restaurant, you truly don't feel cramped or crowded. I had the Florentine scramble with a mango coconut scone (which was super tasty) and homefry potatoes. I couldn't come close to finishing it because the portions were so big! Overall the atmosphere was good- casual, great customer service with good food. It probably isn't the best place to take families because of its size, but its got a very cute and homey atmosphere which we really appreciated. The other day a friend and I went to Alana's for a little bit of brunch. I ordered the Chicken Basil Salad sandwich, which was "meh". The chicken salad was nice, and the basil added great flavor, but it was missing something. Maybe it was the boring bread - I don't know. However, my friend made the correct choice and ordered the delicious Oatmeal Pancakes. Boy! They are amazing, just like everyone says. They are tender and moist, but still have an extra bit of texture from the oatmeal. The pancakes are definitely something that you can't miss from Alana's. Wonderful home town cozy little diner. Swedish pancakes and smoked salmon scrambled eggs FTW! Teeny tiny pitchers for syrup are a bonus! The customer service is the best part about this place, for sure. They are warm, friendly, and attentive - everything you'd look for in a homestyle breakfast joint. I subtracted a star because of the food safety violations I observed while sitting at the counter, like the cook cleaning a pan (one that she just used to stir up some meat) using only a dry dirty towel hanging from her apron string in order to make my smoked salmon scramble. ...... I heard about this place from a friend of mine. After going there, I couldn't believe I haven't been there before! Super good!! The service was really fast and really good. Our waitress was nice and helpful. The food came out quickly, which was awesome before we're were starving! I have a egg white scramble with spinach and other veggies. It was tasty! My lady had the salmon scramble which was even better. She always orders better than me! Go figure. :). We also wanted to try the oatmeal pancakes which my friend said was amazing. It was. LUNCH REVIEW: This place was easy like Sunday morning.... (well, except that it was Saturday afternoon). It was crowded, but we got a table after a few minutes. They don't have a huge lunch menu, but what they had looked good. We each had the half sandwich and salad. The basil chicken salad sandwich is SO good! I wish they sold the chicken salad in containers - I would totally take some home. Guess I'll have to re-create it instead. This might have been a 3-star review (A-OK), but a little incident involving half-and-half took one away. My friend ordered a breakfast tea when we were seated at the counter. According to Wikipedia, English breakfast is "blended to go well with milk and sugar". She got neither. She asked the guy who brought the tea for some cream, but he never came back. She asked another waitress who, despite looking in the mini-fridge across the counter and pointing out the cartons of half-and-half, didn't bring us any. Waitress #2 gave it to her right away... from the guy sitting next to us who just left and *supposedly* never used his half-and-half... They don't have any combo plates (i.e. with all the typical brunch food) so I "created" my own by ordering two dishes off the kids' menu. When I'm craving breakfast on the weekend, it's usually in the form of Company's Coming (a scramble-esque dish topped with two eggs) from Alana's Cafe, with a scone and mocha latte. Tip: if you want coffeecake, get there EARLY. Unlike some other places, where their scrambles are majority potatoes, Alana's Company's Coming is generously proportioned and balanced. The green onions elevate it to another level. The interior is somewhat cramped, but it adds to the community feel of the place. For our breakfast, we decided to split an order of the mediterranean omelet with a side of coffee cake and the Swedish Oatmeal pancakes. The mediterranean omelet was...interesting. While I like all the ingredients that it came with, I found the artichoke hearts to be very firm and tough to chew through, almost like they were not fresh. Though the other ingredients were good, this sort of ruined the combination of flavors for me. The coffee cake that it came with was decent, but nothing memorable. The Swedish Oatmeal pancakes were a bit better, but again, nothing that blew my socks off.
