I read a post from someone else (Brendan I think) who wrote about the very same problem I encountered here. We were seated for about 40-45 min and my son was still finishing his coffee. The host came over and asked if there were any problems and could we leave as there were others waiting. It was rather rude considering we were not there even an hour. When I passed by him I mentioned this and he said, "It's ok we have 1,000 regular customers." Well I WAS one of those but not anymore. I take visiting friends there also and never again. He was truly smug about it. With that attitude I hope his 1,000 customers dwindle. read more

I love this place. I've been here maybe 3-4 times (basically, every time I eat brunch in Burlingame) and each time they have the best service and really good tasting food. They are known for their oatmeal pancakes. I never tried them till the last time I went a few days ago. Needless to confirm anything, they are in fact THAT good. They taste different than regular pancakes, as expected. But they are better and feel healthier. Until you drench them w/ the syrup or some of the other jam they give you. Try this quiet, small place in the early evening. Best items seem to be meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Space is small and cramped and at times it can get quite crowded inside, making it difficult to move around. Despite that, food is good! read more

What a find. We had some time before dropping someone off at the airport, and happened to stumble into this cafe for breakfast. Actually, we ate outside in the glorious sunshine. And it was fabulous! The food was quite delicious and they were very willing to accommodate some serious food restrictions. And the service! Incredible. Our server was just so friendly and helpful. I know the scones are homemade but I prefer a somewhat lighter scone. That said, I'm looking forward to bringing people here when I pick them up in the mornings at SFO. read more

I've been coming here for YEARS, and have to say that it is truly one of my favorite breakfast hangouts. I'm not sure why they don't expand this Burlingame location (the RWC one is much nicer and roomier), because it's a bit tight in there. The BIG problem I encountered in this place in my visit is that when I chose to seat on a table for 4 instead on a narrow table for 2 at the end of the restaurant, the manager or host came to move my mother and I, stating that we needed to move to a table for 2 people because he had a party of 4 coming, even though there were two more tables available for 4 people closer to the kitchen area. Yet, he moved us. Later, to make the matter worse, two couples of women came in and two of them were allowed, by the same manager or host, to sit and on the same table of 4 that I had wanted to sit on earlier. The other two women also sat on a table for 4... I would not want to mention race here, but we were the only different race compared to the rest of the customers. read more

I have a new/used car. I took over the lease from a friend because his wife is pregnant and they needed an SUV and needed to ditch a vehicle. My friend had left a bunch of pennies in the cup holder in the center console. I keep the car clean and I had always wanted to get the pennies out of there but I never had done it. It has been about one month. I was starving this morning and unfamiliar with Burlingame I stopped at the first coffee shop I saw with bustling activity. It is called Alana's Coffee Shop on Burlingame Ave. I decided this is the day I rid myself of the pennies. They were tough to dig out but I collected all 37 to 45 give or take of them and hauled them into the coffee shop. I saddled up at the counter along side a few other customers and plopped by pile of pennies down next to the menu, probably looking like a homeless person. The waitress comes shortly after I sit down and puts her soft gentle hand on my shoulder. Those that know me, know I'm a touchy feely human. I hug, kiss, touch. Thats who I am so I instantly felt a strong connection/energy with this woman. She doesn't ask me for coffee or water or whatever and she simply says, "You are my messenger." I didnt know how to react so I chuckled, "Oh really?" She said (all the while holding my shoulder) "about a year ago I lost my mother. She was everything to me. Whenever she would console me or give me advise she would always put a penny in my hand or leave a penny or two on my dresser. I never asked why but that was just her thing. She would always leave pennies when she was giving love or giving advice. Today is her birthday....." At this point every single hair on my arm is standing at attention and as her eyes began to well up and spill over with tears, mine beat her to it and I begin sobbing uncontrollably. Her as well. I reached out and embraced her in a hug and we cried together right there at the counter for about one minute. I was clutching her harder than I've ever hugged someone and she was reciprocating as we soaked each others shoulders with tears. Bear in mind this was the first minute of meeting each other and we hadn't even gotten to how I take my coffee or how I'd like no cheese in my Denver omelette. She had customers to attend to so after about 90 seconds of hugging, she retreated to the back and got herself together. I did my best to and to be honest the rest of the breakfast was a total blur. I ate, paid and left and her last words to me were, "thank you.... my beautiful messenger. Have a great day." I still haven't really stopped being rattled by it, albeit a good way. And the story leads us to some very obvious focal points. 1. If you love someone, appreciate them and let them know while they're around. Duh.... 2. Express yourself to strangers. You may just make someones entire year with one special moment. Case in point. But the real MORAL of this whole story and what I'd like to make this about.... Do quirky stuff to be remembered by. The Universe is so difficult to understand and string together/make sense of and the random events and such to lead us to where we are today. Why did her Mom leave her pennies? She never explained it. Maybe it was some cosmic destiny leading to this event stringing together myself, her mom and her, and making me see my own mother in a more appreciative light? Maybe this post hits someone in the heart and fixes something? I don't know but it never would've happened if she hadn't been doing the odd character trait of giving her pennies every time she loved her. I will never forget this moment as long as I live. read more

any place that has scones or coffee cake as your choice of bread will keep me coming back! not to mention their fresh slices of fruit that accompany each plate. the egg specialty named company's coming is the perfect mix of homefries, scallions, sausage, cheese, and mushrooms, all topped with two perfectly poached eggs that will ooze their golden yolks over the savory hash. their oatmeal pancakes are very hefty and grilled with a perfect crunchy and crispy outside, while the insides are still soft and fluffy. the lingonberry preserves go perfectly well with the pancakes. be sure to order a fresh squeezed orange juice to wash it all down. there is more often than not a decent wait for a table, but in the end, worth it. read more

Nice place for breakfast, small, cozy, almost never a wait. Cooks are right there cooking in front of you so it's fun to sit on the breakfast bar. Don't expect to find a lot of meat I think that only two items on the menu have meat. their oatmeal pancakes are delicious!!!! they have a stack of 2 which is nice to share when you are having something else besides pancakes. they are a little pricey for what you get but I think it's worth it. I LOVE Alana's Cafe! I would describe their food as healthy, hearty, and homemade. Their menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are wonderful. They always have more than one vegetarian option, which is a MAJOR plus in my opinion. I have tried almost everything on their menu, its ALL good. One of my favorites is the "Farmer's Garden", which is their home fries with scallions, tomatoes, mushrooms, and cheese topped with 2 poached eggs. It was my special day and I had been waiting weeks to see my friends. Well when we made reservations she never said we need everyone there to be seated. We had a party of nine and seven were there. The owner was so rude. She kept saying we'd take two hours and she couldn't let us be seated. If she can't handle a big group she should have never taken the reservation. I have had all kinds of experiences in restaurants and cafes, but have never been asked to leave an establishment after barely finishing my breakfast! My daughter and I were having breakfast and had just finished and paid the bill. I was drinking my coffee when one of the waiters came to our table and said,"you know there are people waiting for a table!" Then turned and walked away. We looked at each other like, did he just ask us to leave? We got up and walked out mentioning to the waiter that it was rude and there were people in there that had been there longer than us! Oh and we won't ever be coming back!! The food wasn't that great anyway. Do not eat at this cafe as they have horrible customer service!! We wanted to try Alana's Cafe but what a huge disappointment and I would give it no stars if I could! Hey hire some people with good social skills!! We have loved breakfasting here from when it was just the two of us to now the five of us. The staff is so friendly and the wiki-stick for the kids while waiting have become a part of our morning tradition. Love this little place, hardly any space to sit, but they do the beat breakfast/brunch in Burlingame. No frills and very simple, basic stuff, but the glory is in the honesty of their ingredients and preparation. My favorite is their smoked salmon, cream cheese scramble with greens onions. I wish I had a photo. It's decadent stuff, creamy and if you love smoked salmon, I beg you to try it. It comes with their home fries and toast, and I'm not such a huge fan of either of these sides, but it's almost as if I get them because I want the scramble so badly :-) Pretty much all of their dishes are good, and they will customize their preparations as you like it, e.g. my husband does not like his eggs moist (I know, he has issues :-( He actually likes them "dry" cue eye roll . . . and they cook his eggs as such, which for me as horrid, but for him, are heaven. He also loves their pancakes and anything else on their menu that's remotely sweet, while I go for the savory stuff, e.g. their quiche with salad is a mainstay. The service is as you'd expect in such a place: warm, friendly, but not rushed or hurried, and the prices are on point. read more
