Our server, Anna, was very kind and gave us great recommendations. I really enjoyed the dill-usional cocktail and my mom's lobster tagliatelle. Alder & Oak is a great addition to the downtown Jax/Brooklyn restaurant scene. While it's located downtown, it seems to pull off the feeling of a Mediterranean oasis. The use of wood, light blues, tans and rope (yes, I said rope) is brilliant. Whether you sit inside or outside, it feels as if you just walked off of the beach. For dinner, there is a great rooftop with sun-sails that provide a casual and elegant vibe. I was also fascinated to see that the kitchen was a separate building, right across from the restaurant and in the middle of outdoor seating. Our hostess and waitress were stellar. Informed, excited and on point throughout the meal. The food was the real star here. Everything hit and the baba ganoush may have been the best I've had. The tzatziki was great as was the hummus. The hummus is thick and hearty. We shared this all on the A&O Mezze board. All of it was extremely fresh. We also shared the beet salad as well, hearty, sweet and nutty. Delicious. Finally, the grilled octopus was cooked to perfection. Seasoned very well and the sausage and potatoes were the perfect accompaniment. Really ingenious drink creations here as well. My wife had the "open sesame" which really did taste abundantly like sesame and the consistency was light. Really nice drink. If you're anywhere close to downtown, you have to try Alder and Oak. Food was so good. We got lamb chops and they were absolutely delicious. We sat at the bar, it was a Friday night we arrived at 5pm. Half the bar was full. It took 15 min for the bartender to take out order. He was extremely nice but that's not ok. Then it got busier and we were waiting on a to go order and wanted to share a glass of wine while we waited. Waited over 20 min, no to go order and no bartender to ask for drink order. It's a new place and I know they need to iron out some things but the service was way too slow. read more

We had a reservation on a Wednesday evening. Good thing as it was packed due to both a private event at the bar as well as the rain taking away some of their outdoor seating capacity. We didn't go inside and were seated outside under the awning. Still got a little damp with the sprinkles and wind, but it was pleasant. If you're seating outside - note, it'll be noisy with your usual city traffic sounds and tables around you. Service was fantastic. Our server, Aryca, and the food were the highlight of our experience. Aryca was delightfully attentive, knowledgeable, responsive, engaging, and professional. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share including the appetizer mezze platter (all the dips were fabulous and the pita warm and fresh, "pickles" were a bunch of pickled veggies plus olives), tuna crudo (very nice with some texture), French fries (thin and well done as we both liked), and a margherita pizza which was absolutely delicious. So this is s beautiful place open air inside and out on a gorgeous spring day. Outdoor and indoor seating. Outdoor bar. Valet parking in pm. Daytime and night can park in garage across the street. Our waiter seemed new and overly attentive while forgetting to bring the sparkling water to start. Tried the arugula salad. Walnuts are minced and barely detectable. Green apple slices very nice. This place is gorgeous and a wonderful location BUT the parking is ridiculous. My husband drove around for 30 minutes to wait for street parking. The food was pretty good but the menu was very limited. If you're not crazy about Aegean seasoning, there's very little to choose from. I think they could greatly benefit from expanding the menu to include a few more options. My son in law ordered the fresh fish (which was on the menu) and was told that it had been removed from the menu and would not return. I would love to return to this place based primarily on aesthetics but they do need to work on parking and expand their menu a bit. Service was great! read more

After much anticipation, I was finally able to sit down for dinner at Alder & Oak, and my final report is that I will in fact be back again and again. The design concept is absolutely unique, and adds a new and exciting restaurant style to the Riverside area that will only get better as the weather warms up. We sat at an inside table but will definitely be checking out the rooftop bar for pre and post-dinner drinks next visit. For our first time, we stuck with the basics - pizza and pasta. And cocktails, of course. We started with the Wild Thyme and Dill-usional cocktails. Both of these were served in martini glasses (perfect to me). Of the two, the dill cocktail absolutely stole the show. Such a unique concept with dill and cucumber flavors, topped with black pepper, and not too overpowering. If you like funky flavors, you absolutely have to try this out. Of course, a dill cocktail just has to be sipped with a pizza, so we ordered the Prosciutto Parma. The crust was actually amazing, and I'm so happy to report that this pizza is worth the try. We also split the Bucatini and Truffles pasta. Again, another major hit for us. The combination of truffle and wild mushrooms (and yes, it's important they're wild) was amazing in this dish. Another perfect pairing with a cocktail. While we did not get around to any appetizers this visit, our table neighbors ordered the Lamb Kofta which will 100% be on my order next time. It looked absolutely amazing. We also saw the Lobster Tagliatelle come out, and if you're looking for a "phone eats first" dish, this is the one! We also tried the Galatopia (milk pie). I'd love to keep Alder & Oak a secret, but it's truly deserving of your visit. The feta and goat cheese are made from sheep and goat, which matters to those with allergies/sensitivities to dairy. This also made the dishes taste better. We WILL be going back. The food was amazing! I had a special Mediterranean Salmon and also tried the Lamb Shank and Lamb Chops. Everything was delicious! My only critique is that they are still getting their feet under them and training the staff. This will work itself out in a few weeks which will make this a 5 star for me. Chose this new spot for my birthday celebration and everything was delicious. Tucker was our server and did a fantastic job. We sat outside but soon realized that it was too windy and a bit cold. We managed but be wary of sitting outside between the first floor inside restaurant and the kitchen on a windy day. It was like a wind tunnel! We started with the mezze board and warm pita. We asked for additional pita too. The best baba ganoush I have had. Less smoky than usual, I really enjoyed it. The tzatziki was excellent too. The humus had bits of chick peas and was delicious too. Made a reservation for inside seating a week prior and had to wait 40 minutes for our table due to them seating outside reservations inside because of the cold weather, which was very frustrating. The inside is very small and loud. Our waiter who was also the bartender asked if we would like sparkling or still, assuming tap but got charged $10 for a bottle of aqua panna with no clarification or option. The food: the octopus was overcooked and very chewy, half of it inedible. The chicken souvlaki was also overcooked and dry. The shrimp pasta and cauliflower app were good however. After receiving our food we were not checked on until we're done with the meal. Very underwhelming dining experience for what is advertised and menu prices do not reflect the service and quality. The design and concept of the restaurant were aesthetically pleasing. Since it's downtown parking can be difficult. We lucked out and got street parking eventually. We were greeted by a friendly host. Our server was pleasant and accommodating. One of us ordered a salad that was supposed to have walnut but it was missing. It took about an hour for our entrees to come out. When we asked for water they gave us $10 sparkling bottled water or flat water. We were not aware that tap water was an option. I had the opportunity to check out Alder and Oak on their opening day and I was blown away. As a frequent customer of Southern Grounds I'm already a huge fan. I love the utilization of three different concepts in one hub, especially the strategic placement in the Brooklyn area. Despite the chilly weather, the vibe was very cozy. The views of downtown Jacksonville and across the river were beautiful. I'm a huge fan of their pizza. I couldn't get enough. I was so engrossed in the event. I didn't take any pictures. We were extremely lucky to be invited to the soft opening of the new Alder & Oak restaurant at The Hub in the Brooklyn area. Also opening is the new SOGRO location and Zorba's rooftop bar.
