Great little out of the way bistro on Olympic Peninsula. Nice place to stop on way to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic Natl Park. Had a delicious steak and wild mushroom panini w/ sweet potato fries Don't remember what my friend had as this was back on Sept 16, 2011. She did have a pear cider that was quite tasty and only 5% alcohol. I had some tea w/agave syrup. Really good. Only about a dozen tables and pretty full for a Friday afternoon. Alder Wood Bistro is simply the best restaurant on the North Olympic Peninsula. No one else comes close. Gabriel and Jessica have created a wonderful, hospitable bistro focused on providing the best of our regional cuisine. They work with local farmers and food providers, so their menu highlights local seafood - salmon, halibut, ling cod, black cod - local vegetables - brussels sprouts, lacinato kale, carrots - local meats - clark farm beef, heritage hogs, and other local products - beers, wines, lavender sausages. Their planked salmon is wonderful. Their beef burger is astounding. If you ask around in the Seattle area, you'll find that Clallam County has a reputation for providing good beef. Alder Wood serves some of the best. They also have the best french fries, and that's saying a lot, especially since they use local potatoes. Their salads are fresh from a local farm. They helped the farmer set up her business, and they are always looking out for new products. The last time we were there, they were serving pickled quail eggs, raised by a 4H kid on a local farm. Other things to try include any of their pizzas. They have their own wood fired oven and their smokey, with smoked meats, or their harvest pizza, with winter squash, bacon and herbs, are out of this world. Try the hanger steak. Did we say the burger was good. This is even better. Try any of the planked fish. The salmon is fresh and local. A lot of salmon, halibut and the like are landed locally, but quickly whisked to Seattle or even more distant markets by air. (We've seen the crates at the local airport.) Alder Wood makes a point of using the freshest and highest quality fish in the area. Their fried oysters are a case in point, wonderful local shellfish, simply prepared. Now local that legendary farmer Nash Huber is producing wheat lour, Gabriel has taken to baking his own locally sourced breads. Prepare to swoon. Gabriel, who does the cooking, spends each January in Spain, studying the cuisine, learning new techniques and recharging for the upcoming year. His wife Jessica has made the restaurant a delightful retreat right in downtown Sequim. The informal dining room is welcoming, but the garden out back is exquisite with herbs, fruit trees and sunny Sequim weather. Between the two of them, they have created a gem. The wine list is full of Washington State wines, including a number of local ones, but also has a surprisingly good Spanish collection. They have good prices and a good selection by the glass. They also feature locally brewed beers which can be a real treat. If you are ever out on the North Olympic Peninsula, perhaps to see Hurricane Ridge or explore the Dungeness Spit, and you want to try some of the great food of the region, you can't do better than dining at Alder Wood Bistro. read more

We were in Sequim visiting for about a week and we had heard so much about this bistro that we had to try it. Well, we ended up going there three times! Once for appetizers and deserts, next for lunch and then finally for dinner specifically to try their wood fired, thin crust pizza! My husband had hamburger, made out of local beef, and like everything else, it was amazing! We. Were recently in Queenstown, NZ, where there is a burger place called Ferberger, and they are supposed to have thebest burger on the planet! Well, my husband claims that Adler. wood Bistro burger was better than Ferberger of NZ! I loved their Fungi pizza which was crispy, flavorful and just perfect! We tried all three deserts over the three meals, great apple pie, flourless chocolate desert both served with unbelievable vanila icecream! We congratulate Gabriel, the young chef and owner for staying true to his principles in using local, fresh products and delivering healthy, amazing meals to this beautiful community! read more

One of the best restaurants we could find in Sequim during our last visit. They are only open 3 to 4 days of the week, so it seems that they are very busy when they are open. The prices are a bit higher then you would be used to in Sequim, but the quality is very superb. We did not have a reservation, so our wait was about 20 minutes, but well worth it. We did ask some questions about reservations through their email, but never got a response. Great food - great service at fair prices. We would return during our next visit. read more

A wonderful place to have a romantic dressy night out with a special someone or even a little more casual for that 2nd or 3rd date. Wait staff was on spot with knowledge of menu. The Chef is AMAZING! I don't think my brain can think of just 1 word to explain the flavours my taste buds encountered. The Cedar plank Salmon was melt in your CrAzY delish! & im NOT even a fan of fish. Not sure why people give this restaurant so many stars. Every time I leave there I think to myself that it was ok but not memorable. I do not recall any dishes that I've eaten there. No more than three stars usually but today's meal only deserved two stars at the most. I ordered the Bahn Mi Vietnamese meatloaf sandwich. You get a thin slice of meatloaf with cole slaw for $16.50. Nothing in the sandwich tasted remotely Vietnamese. What's worse, the bread they used was some seedy, heavy panini bread that just overwhelmed the meatloaf's texture and flavor. It was like I was eating a fake meat sandwich. I had the French fries as a side and they were greasy. The calamari was good if on the small side for $11. My ex-wife had the fish sandwich which had the same batter as the calamari and greasy as well. Neither of us were able to finish our small sandwiches because of the grease. Even the bread on her fish sandwich was greasy. The service was the only bright spot in the dining experience. I will not be returning. This is just another pretentious, mediocre Sequim restaurant passing off as fine dining. read more

Came for the lavender festival. The food is okay but extremely overpriced. I think the reviews are hyped up due to a lack of choices in the town. Appearance and ambiance looks like someone's house. Receiving staff seems unorganized and abrupt (awkward moment when hostess volunteered info that the waitress will be her mom.) Waitress (hostess's mom) was friendly. Sat outside ... feels like someone's backyard ... a fly landed in my beer and was actively swimming in it, and when I asked for a new one... the daughter promised it wouldn't kill me and to just fish it out. Some redemption credit when the mom came out with a new but harm was already done and all reservations about the place was brought to light. If touring the festival, I highly recommend the overpriced street vendors in lieu of this place. read more

Days open and hours are limited yet they want to serve above the maximum number of meals that space, time allow. Ive been there twice and had a terrible experience both times. Their food IS very tasty, no doubt about it. However, both times I have been their attitude was terrible. It felt as though we were bothering them to bring us food and for the price I would, at the VERY least, like to have a neutral feeling from the waitress. I have to say that I have very high hopes for this place. I have spent more time researching it then I have dining there! I went by tonight and noticed they were very busy, which is good. I was content waiting for a place at the very small bar area because I was by myself and I didn't want to take up a table. But I got sat nonetheless. The menu looked phenomenal! I was ready to order all the things! I can really appreciate what the chef/owner is trying to do. The soup-lentil with duck and fennel was very good. I wanted to stay but when my soup arrived my drink order was yet to come. So my maxim for dining out and spending good money is: two strikes and you are out. Harried service and lack of a drink. I will give you guys a pass. I tipped my server and cut my losses. I did hand my review card to the chef/owner and told him it was great soup. If they want me to come and help out on busy nights as an expediter or prep or anything let me know. I can. read more

Make sure you book a table here if you spend time in Sequim. It was early may so we had the mushrooms and asparagus flatbread which was wonderful as an appetizer. I had the Neah Bay fresh salmon which was done on a cedar plank in the wood-fried oven and it was some of the best salmon I've had. This place has good food but you will pay the price if you eat here. They deserve to be on one of those failed restaurant shows where some red faced host yells at them relentlessly for their failings. Last night my husband called and got a reservation for our anniversary. We arrive and they're closed. Closed for the month of January for vacation and cleaning. The f'ing cleaning crew took the reservation and ruined our night. That's not the only time they've failed us. Go ahead and try making a reservation here.i dare you. (Made that mistake for my 27th birthday.) Waited an hour and a half in the cramped bar for them to honor that reservation( on two occasions). THEN by the time you're seated it's 8:45pm. And when you go to pay the bill it's 11pm. I dare you to pay in cash. (They didn't bring us any change. And we were due at least $50) Instead you will sit in the empty restaurant save for the wait staff at a table counting their tips oblivious to the fact that you are glaring at them and the birthday girl had fallen asleep literally at the table. It gets to the point where you get up and leave and a year down the road make another failed attempt to have a good experience here. read more

The service was pretty good. The time between the appetizer and the main dish was not really appropriate it took a little too long. The fresh oysters are insanely good but they only give you three of them for $10. I'm not cheap but they should at least give you an even number so you can share with your dinner partner. I would rather pay $20 for six of them. The pizza was too salty but the crust is really good I basically just tore off the crust and dipped it in red sauce and that was my meal. We also ordered a side order of the truffled fries. Those were really good I highly recommend those. The house red wine is very good. The organic lemonade had A funky aftertaste . it's set in what used to be like maybe a house and so it's very small but not dressed up enough to charge the prices they were charging. Honestly although I love what they're doing with the organic dishes I don't think they're going to be around long enough to visit next year. read more

This review is a few months overdue, but since my friends and I recently named eating here as a highlight of 2009, I felt I had to yelp... We came in after a day of hiking on Hurricane Ridge and couldn't have landed in better hands. The ambiance was warm and friendly, our server knowledgeable and helpful, and the food absolutely delightful. I had the best mussels I've EVER tasted...plump, fresh, and served in a delicious broth...and oh! the bread you can dip in it! (Get them, you'll see.) The lamb was supremely tender and served with a gorgeous sauce, the beet salad was fresh and flavorful, and the fungi flatbread woodfired to perfection with delicious fresh local mushrooms. Yum. We finished with a flourless chocolate cake and a persimmon mousse, and we felt so happily satisfied! Not just for the food but also for the fact that nearly everything on the menu is local and organic. In fact they have codes on the menu for what's from Sequim itself, or the peninsula, or the region...AND there are 2 stars next to anything NOT organic...and maybe one dish had those two stars! Incredible! That same effort also compliments their wine list where we found a great local red recommended by our server. I've been to a lot of fancy restaurants that claim their food is local and organic, but I've never seen the kind of commitment and follow-through as I did at the Alder Wood Bistro. It was a pleasure to participate in that kind of healthy, sustainable practice by eating there, and you can truly taste the difference. Because we live here in Sequim, I can say that the Alderwood Bistro is truly a blessing to this community. The food is fresh, local and clean. But it is more than that. The food is inspiring. Eating at the Alderwood Bistro does not have to be expensive. I find that my husband and I can eat there, spend $60 - 80 for the two of us, and then we save money for the next few weeks because we've had our interest in vegetables and fresh food renewed. This place will change your perception of what tastes good. You will not want to go to the chain eateries ever again. You will want to grow a garden and order your own supply of grass fed meat. You will want to buy some really great pans and get back into cooking. The Alderwood Bistro is an amazing place. Don't miss it! read more

Great find! Don't let the little house like structure scare you away... This little gem is packed with a wonderfully fresh handcrafted menu, great service and prepared better than some of the swanky Seattle celeb restaurants. Seafood meals we had were perfectly cooked to a melty pink tenderness, not overcooked in any way, yay. Vegetables were interesting with a smoky char from the wood fired oven, delectable. Okay the house bread, homemade and really interesting served with a pickled beet hummus, super special. Interesting wine selection small but smart. Affordable but a great date place if you want a full meal experience or just some interesting handcrafted pizza. We were racing for a ferry so took some in-house dessert with us... Dang, it was great... Super fresh, layers of flavor with interesting surprises like fresh ginger and roasted hazelnuts,,, we are not big carrot cake people but the description was enticing... So why not 5 stars... The furniture is a bit diner-like but we don't care, we'll always make this a stop on the way to Port Angeles! Good job chefs, pastry chefs and server! read more

We were on our way to the coast and starving. The restaurant was packed. Luckily, the hostess was kind enough to squeeze us in with no reservations. The calamari was so good that my 5-year-old begged us to order more. My halibut and mussels with black beans in saffron sauce was perfectly cooked and so tasty.
