From the moment we arrived, the intimacy of the space let me know we were in for a cozy, intimate experience. After being seated (reservation was at 6) we watched the chefs in the open kitchen busily preparing meals in near silence, but with perfection. Our evening was filled with culinary artistry (which I appreciated as I also took culinary lessons when I retired from the military), storytelling, impeccable presentations, and teamwork. Chef Christian, one of the many that introduced our small courses, left no crumbs as he described the Mexican theme of our courses. What impressed me most was watching the entire team work together so seamlessly and with almost no talking. Every person had a role, and the coordination between the kitchen and the dining room was absolutely amazing. You would think it was an episode on the Food Network as they seemed very passionate describing our meals, moved with precision, and timed our meals perfectly so that we didn't wait too long in between meals. Our Mixologist described the story behind the drinks she prepared for our food and this made the experience even better. Each course wasn't simply placed in front of us, it was introduced with history, culture, and meaning. While living in San Antonio, I have dined on several Mexican cuisines, but these pairings were next level. Over the evening, we were taken on a journey through Mexican cuisine, learning about the inspiration behind what we were eating while experiencing flavors and presentations that were award winning. The presentation of each course was beautiful almost too beautiful to eat ( photos attached for your viewing pleasure) yes Yelpers, a work of art. And with each meal we were given new utensils that prepared us for the next taste, I would add the flavors were just as impressive as the presentation. For my husband's birthday, Mixtli gave us the gift, an experience we will remember. This is not simply a restaurant you visit for a meal; it is a place you visit to experience food as art, history, culture, and storytelling. 5 STARs from us, we are over the moon, and if you are celebrating a special occasion or simply consider yourself a true foodie, while pricy, Mixtli is absolutely worth experiencing and with no wait and great customer service we were happy. The entire staff was warm and welcoming; professional, yet approachable and kind. The ambiance was the same: warm and welcoming, yet chic and upscale. This is definitely worth a visit. Go if you can. When we asked the server she just said "Oh yeah, the tostadas are coming". We were confused since the whole point is to enjoy the three course meal, but decided to let it slide. The whole time we were eating our food, we had to constantly ask for drink refills. Even though she was just conversing with another server in the middle of the restaurant. Although La Gloria at the Pearl advertises to close at 10pm, we witnessed the workers started to shut down the restaurant at 9:30pm. Turning off lights and turning people away. At that time, we received our mango cheesecake for dessert. Around 9:40, I had finished my cheesecake, however my boyfriend was half way through his. Our server then approached the table. She asked if we were going to order anything else, we said we were not and thanked her. She stood there with the toast tablet in her hands. My boyfriend asked if we could have a receipt. She said "of course", left and came back in a couple of seconds. She then put the receipt on the table and stood there. My boyfriend (who was clearly still eating) said "Thank you, we'll pay in a moment" to which she replied "Oh, it's because we are closed" and did not leave until paid AT 9:40PM. My boyfriend didn't even finish his dessert. We were very upset. She ruined the whole dining experience for us. We just paid and left. I have never had anybody in the food industry be so unprofessional at "closing time". She was not attentive to the table whatsoever, until it was time to pay the bill. For her to proceed to rush us out, even thought another table was still right next to us. With that being said, we are not planning on coming back. They have a sit down restaurant, two bars a bowl and burrito service, street taco counter a bakery and plenty of products for sale. We stopped in for margaritas just to check it out and it was such a cool vibe. They had mariachis playing music throughout, it was like experiencing a Mexican market with so much to offer from craft drinks to casual dining. Everything is cohesive and well designed to give patrons a wonderful experience with amazing drinks and food.

The cocktails were the best part of our experience. We planned to order a little of everything to try. We started with the Esquites Negros that feature huitlacoche, something I love but isn't on many menus. Their version was ok, but not great. It tasted like canned huitlacoche mixed with unseasoned frozen corn. After that we got the Pulpo Al Pastor. Octopus is another favorite that can be hard to find. Theirs was served on a warped wooden board that had already started to absorb the pineapple salsa smear. While the octopus was impressive to look at, it did not taste good. It seemed like it had not been prepped or tenderized properly. The bottom 1 inch of the tentacles was tender, but those usually are. Unfortunately higher up the meat was so rubbery that it was almost inedible. I ate a piece cut into tiny chunks with a tortilla and some onion to try to get through it. But I couldn't bring myself to eat more. After we had been sitting a while not touching it, a bartender asked how it was. We explained it was too chewy. He took it back to the kitchen. Another bartender informed us the manager took off 50% of the price of the dish because we had eaten part of it. No manager ever came out to speak to us about it. In fact, we didn't see anyone who looked like management at all during our experience- which is odd for a Friday night dinner service. At that point, we decided not to order more. We were talking about how empty the restaurant was while we were there, and now I can understand why. They have an interesting and intriguing menu, but what we ordered was poorly executed. While we might still go in for cocktails in the future, I don't think I would have dinner there or recommend them to others. Since we were still hungry when we left, we went to 2 other restaurants after this and, thankfully, had much better experiences at both.

The pineapple is of course cooked with the pork. More pineapple, lemon wedge, onions and cilantro is provided on the side to add to the tacos. The tacos are served with charro beans. All was tasty. During the last 3 visits to the Alamo Heights location we have waited over an hour to be served. Tonight when I became curious & frustrated because others had ordered & food was being served I complained. Our server/ bartender, Lisa responded with "you are rude". I felt this was an incredibly unprofessional response as a server. I asked to speak with the GM & Daisy, manager came over and was dismissive and unprofessional. Overall the team at La Fogata Alamo Heights was underwhelming, unresponsive, and under staffed. I'm not sure what is happening at La Fogata or if they've become a franchise but stay clear of the Alamo Heights location.
