Love this place's breakfast. Coworkers and I often order on weekends and they are always willing and able to deliver our food right to our office, and quickly at that! Their iced coffee is unbelievably good. No matter who I speak to when I call, they are always professional and thorough. The delivery guy is sweet and always has a smile on his face. This is your average diner with a variety of options, but nothing particularly memorable. The prices are reasonable as well. I'm sure there are moments where something warrants less than three stars and other times that make five a perfectly acceptable choice. It's just that in the two times I've visited this establishment, I've felt I could have ate the same meal but better elsewhere. That fact doesn't mean Alex's isn't worth your time; I wouldn't go out of my way for it though. Stop by if you're in the area or looking for a new place to try! You might be pleasantly surprised or at the very least you'll leave satisfied. I do also want to mention that it's not huge, so if you go during peak meal times you might feel a bit crammed in or have to wait a few minutes. read more

LOVE this place!! One of the best things about Poughkeepsie!! My go-to brunch place on weekends. I have never had anything here that wasn't absolutely delicious. The staff is always so sweet and lovely, and Mike is amazing. The atmosphere is always cheerful with big band music, sophisticated yet comfortable decor. Nothing says 'Welcome to Poughkeepsie!' quite like finding a great local diner for Sunday brunch after a train ride from NYC. We were near the tail-end of our vacation and took the train up the Hudson Valley for a couple of days. Once we got the rental car, we were hungry so I turned to Yelp (of course!) and found Alex's. This place has personality like it's been there for generations, which it has. We were quickly seated and greeted by our server, who was wonderful. She quickly had hot coffee in front of us and gave us time to peruse the menu, which has a great selection of the standards, but also a lot of things new for me. I decided on the Eggs Copenhagen, which is a take on the Benedict, using smoked salmon instead of Canadian bacon. The eggs were poached perfectly -- obviously by someone who has poached a million eggs -- and the hollandaise was smooth and tasty. Our coffee cups were never empty and we were never wanting for anything during our breakfast. Overall, a great meal at a great restaurant. I only wish we were in town longer to taste more of their menu. read more

Delicious food with a wide variety of breakfast, brunch and lunch options (including vegetarian and gluten free). The ambiance was great - clean, tables have ample room between each other, lots of natural light and relatively quiet. We came with a family with two children, and the wait staff was very accommodating. Our waitress was great, respecting our need to get in and out because we had a show to go to. We ate omelets, the patty melt, chocolate chip pancakes, and the avocado and basil melt. Everyone loved their food. Great place right down the street from the civic center. read more

I have to begin this review by saying that I never actually ate at Alex's restaurant but felt the need to write this review anyway. I called last Saturday evening to inquire if they had outdoor seating since I don't eat indoors yet. He was so nice to tell me that he didn't have outdoor seating but gave me the name of two other resturants in town that did. After checking out those places I decided that I still wanted to pick up at his place and take it to a park nearby. I called him back to ask for a place to eat and he gave the names of a few places but couldn't remember the name of one that he thought would be perfect. At that point I realized that I actually calling him at home. I felt so bad to bother him but he said don't worry about it. He actually called me back a few minutes later when the name of the park came to him. How sweet was that. He really went over and above to make it work for us. It turned out that we just drove straight home to long Island and didn't stop to eat but I will definetly be making a special trip up there one weekend to eat at his restaurant. Anyone that lives up there please go for me since I'm not sure when I'll make it up there. read more

Don't come with any expectations of anything and you might leave feeling less than 'meh.' Absolute bare bones truck stop diner fare, great for an early breakfast. But once those tables start filling up, the noise becomes unbearable. I've been a few times and every time I can't hear the person across the table from me. Uncomfortable seating. Very quaint decor. Waitresses are exceptionally friendly and a big selling point. Otherwise I would have been appalled by spending so much for so little. They do take out, but there's a Dunkin Doughnuts across the street where you can get better food (you heard that right) for a few bucks cheaper. read more

When I walked into this restaurant for breakfast, it was already packed. Good quality coffee, food was served faster than other restaurants. When I wanted another refill of coffee, the waitress passed me with the jug of coffee in her hand, i had to ask for another one instead of them asking me if i wanted another refill. I had a hard time deciding, but I finally ordered iced coffee and challah French toast stuffed with bananas and Nutella. Wonderful! I have been here often with my daughter for breakfast and lunch. Its my go-to restaurant for many reasons. The staff are friendly and kind. Food is great. If you want alot for a little, this is the place! They have everything! Salads, breakfast, sandwiches, seafood, moussaka and dessert. All of it is fresh, tasty and unbelievably inexpensive. Ive been there during the busy lunch rush and the weekends for breakfast, no matter how busy Alex's gets, the staff is friendly, aiming to please and a real delight. this is the most busy place in the city of pok during the week and I can see why: the ambience is superb, the waitresses fast and the food awesome! Winner of best breakfast ever goes to Alex's omfg. I had the chocolate chip pancakes and shared an eggs Benedict and it was the best hollandaise I've had and the pancakes were perfectly good and tasted like pancake heaven. My boyfriend had the bacon omelet and loved it(and he's picky af) and my mom the stuffed French toast which was amazing. Definitely go here. Sarah our server was so sweet and a fantastic server!!! Only came in here because I had some time to kill waiting for a bus, and I don't think I could have made a better choice! This charming little bistro on the corner is run by all of the friendliest people known to man, and has outstanding food. I got the beef barley soup as a side to my tuna melt panini, which were both so great, and the older lady working there seems like she's probably the owner? Yet, she still runs around, taking orders, bringing out food, keeping it clean, and everything. She was awesome. And the Black Cow I had was absolutely phenomenal. I've never had a better ice cream soda in my life. Haha I mean that-it's mind-blowing. Definitely worth checking out. read more

Place is centrally located and highly visible; interior is bistro like and welcoming (bright and open, pressed tin ceilings, red brck floors) with windows on two sides (it sits at the corner of Main and Market). Menu was a simple one-pager (a good sign). My Eggs Benedict had a light lemony Hollandaise, seemed homemade (even started to break a little); side of sausges were substantial in size, plump, meaty, well bronzed, peppery and flavorful; home fries were plentiful, tender and brown, but seemed to have been fried on the flattop with some other rendered meat grease (some slightly off metallic flavors). Mix of regulars hanging drinking coffee, reading the paper, chatting with friends; visitors stopping by for a bite; downtown suits grabbing some lunch before heading back to the office. Yes, yes, yes. I order breakfast from here at least once a week. For a quick, delicious Eggs Benedict, you won't find a better spot. I have eaten inside the restaurant a couple of times and the staff is very nice and very quick. The selection is great, although I'm very stuck in my ways and 98% of the time get the Eggs Benedict. The best way I have explained Alex's to someone is "elevated diner food." And "diner food" is NOT meant as a throwaway description. I am not one of these people, but I have been told that the hours fluctuate a lot so I would call ahead before going. read more

I love the atmosphere very comfortable and old timey, nice jazz playing and everyone was Very nice, Especially our waitress Karen. The menu is pretty big and versatile! Rachael had the GAF sandwich with feta avocado and turkey with a garlic mayo on multi-grain ciabatta- to die for! her sandwich was perfect. Alex's Restaurant is a Poughkeepsie gem. The Avocado Focaccia couldn't possibly be improved, and the Feta and Spinach Fries were unforgettable. We were most impressed with Alex's family-like service, an extensive menu loaded with interesting and unusual selections, and very reasonable prices.
