Alternate Energy is a long-established local solar energy firm dealing with both water heating and photovoltaic (PV) systems. They represent the MITSUBISHI line of PV modules, a well-known and dependable brand. The sales rep did an excellent and honest evaluation of my situation. The estimates came within my financial range, $30K for 20 panels, $45K for 30. He even took the time to evaluate the condition of my existing composition shingle roof, which was installed in 1994. I have been long familiar with Mitsubishi products and have no doubts on their capabilities. I was interested with the new panel which had recently been announced, 255W module to replace the 225Ws which had been quoted to me. But, I did not receive a call-back from AE. Instead, I chose a SANYO HIT 220W based system which on paper out-performs the Mitsubishi 225W by 10%, while costing 4.5% less. It might have been a different story with the newer 255W module. Despite my choice of another contractor, it would not be a mistake for anyone to select Alternative Energy as their provider. read more

I met and talked with many solar panel companies, but was most impressed with Alternate Energy for their product, Mitsubishi 255w panels and price. Miles was very knowledgable and was able to answer any question I had. The communication with this company is spot on. I was sent e-mail reminders of when they would come to measure my roof and for the two installation days. They did all the paperwork (opening and closing of building permits, MIlilani Town Assn, HECO and CC of Honolulu approval) and sent us copies of everything. On top of that, workmanship is neat and they cleaned up after themselves when done (I've heard horror stories about some companies leaving a mess). I live in Mauka where it is always raining, so I figured I wouldn't see much savings until summer (our panels were put in at the end of Nov. 2012). But since getting the panels my electric bill has only been $17 each month! I'm loving this because my average bill was $300+ and this was WITHOUT our AC being on! I put in 25 panels and it's been more than enough. I've been able to bank a lot via net metering. FYI Another well known company gave me an estimate of needing 40 panels which would have been approximately $20,000 more in cost. According to them this is what I would need to be able to turn on our AC for a couple hours a day. So glad I did not go with them. One star is actually to much. 7 years ago alternate installed their pv system. They installed on my double shingle roof. I now have the wet rot on that side of my house. They came out and "Stan" inspected and said it wasn't their fault. I hired a roofer and he said it was alternate fault as they installed and didn't do it right. Alternate recommended a outside roofer to inspect. He came and inspected. He said they installed it the right way, but they were not supposed to install on a double shingle roof. Water will seep in between and cause damage, which is what happened. Now they don't respond to emails. So this leads me to believe they are still not going to fix their mistakes. To top it off, the roofer found additional holes on the wrong side of the house, that they filled up and neglected to inform me about. I would not recommend them to anyone. read more

I choose Alternate Energy (AEI) because of Mark Ida. Mark is awesome; he was able to answer all my technical questions and concerns. AEI is a 3rd generation family owned and operated business that is here to stay and provides a one stop shop service (no subcontractors). In addition, they provide solar hot water service. My solar panels were fully installed November 2013. I delayed my Yelp review to see if I would have any issues; I wanted to grade AEI's customer service after installation is complete. It has been over 2 month after my PV installation and everything is good. I am happy to say I am in the $17 club with 130kWH in the bank. Quality Japanese made Mitsubishi solar panels is the way to go. Many people don't know but there are a lot of china made solar panels in the market. Not all PV panels are the same. Poorly made panels could lead to panels under-performing or failing early. Everything went smoothly with the planning and installation. I am fully satisfied with the product, service, and experience I received. Situations that impressed me: 1. AEI rushed my homeowners association solar package. I just signed with AEI and 2 days later I am asking Mark Ida to fast track my homeowners association package. The AEI team completed my solar package and was ready for pick up the next day. Scott from my homeowners association was going on vacation for 3 weeks and would have delayed my overall completion time frame. Considering that my contract to hire AEI was already signed and we made the initial payment; I was very happy Mark Ida and the AEI team went the extra mile. 2. Mark Ida is up to date with the solar industry. I like to do business with people who are very knowledgeable and know what they are talking about. There was a lot of uncertainty with the September 6th interconnection policy by HECO. Quality controls during both install dates. Towards the end of the first day, Stan drove up to my driveway and introduced himself. He said he was there to inspect the work. I was very surprise; it is always assuring to know another set of eyes is present to inspect and ensure the project is done right. Even my wife was surprised and thought I was joking on the second day of install when she asks, "who pulled up in our driveway?", and I responded "Quality Control". On the last day of install, Stan pointed out he was not happy with the placement of 2 solar panels. The panels were not 100% flushed (I barely could tell) and had the installers realign the 2 solar panels. In my eyes, it was a bit OCD to notice the 2 solar panels slightly misaligned. AEI is all about quality and it's awesome to know they have an OCD Quality Control manager his name is Stan and he strives for perfection and nothing less. 4. Install crew took time to insure no trash was left behind. On the last day of install, I noticed an AEI installer hunch forward towards the ground pacing back and forth near the work area. I thought he was looking for something he lost. He said he was making sure no trash including wire clippings got left behind. WOW. read more

I recently had a system installed. It seemed that once they were paid, their service ended. I waited months with no contact from them and no power production. It was only after several angry calls were made that they returned to my house and installed the necessary inverter and then sent me links to register my system. They were quick to offer excuses pointing at HECO for prolonging the process. read more

I have had my PV system up since Aug. 2013. I have not seen a 17 dollar HECO bill yet! The lowest it has ever been is $80. I have repeatedly contacted Alternate Energy to find the cause, sent HECO statements to their home office and have yet to receive a reply. Is this how you treat a customer who put their trust and hard earned money into your business? When we had the PVs put up we also replaced our solar water heater and added additional panels to compensate for the additional power needed for the electric water heater. The amount that I pay to HECO is not the problem with this company, it is the customer service that is provided after the sale that bothers me. I would not recommend Alternate Energy to any friends or family because they cant even return a call to explain why their products/workmanship fails to meet what they promised. read more

I attempted to call them at least twice, and I received 2 return calls almost 3 weeks later. I had almost given up on this firm, yet I tried working with Chad to get an estimate but he was overseas somewhere at the time. He directed me to send me all of my information via text and he would write out a quote and send to me. I agreed and sent him all the needed information including screenshots of the blueprints for the areas that needed coverage. At the time he gave me a rough quote over the phone before receiving all my information but to date almost 2 months waiting I have not received follow up or a written quote. Too bad I was hoping to do business with such an established firm. Just a case of miscommunication although they were very nice over the phone. Being a Kapolei Villages resident, I had questions on how panels were installed on Monier tile roofs. Alternate Energy's rep Radford Nakamura provided straightforward guidelines and reinforced my product research with Mitsubishi panels. All documents were completed and install schedule was as programmed. HECO net metering was completed one month after work completed. I am 74 years old with terminal cancer and I feel this company has taken advantage of that. I signed a contract in June of 2019 for an upgraded system after a roof replacement. I followed their recommendation for a roofing company which seemed to do a good job but were lousy at cleaning up(I still have bags from shingles in my trees). Alternate Energy finally completed the contract 6 months later in mid December. Their incompetency in measuring for solar panels caused 5 men 8 hours to reinstall the solar panel racks a number of times(they wouldn't tell me how many extra holes they drilled in my new roof). The electricians had to return a half of dozen times to try an fix problems and get the system up and running. The salesman became rude and insulting after I wouldn't give him the second half of contract payment even though the job wasn't finished and there were still outstanding problems including electrical code violations that I asked to be fixed. If they say they will be out to fix problems on Tuesday, don't expect them to show up until a week later. All I asked for was an apology for the way I was treated and they couldn't even do that. They said they would give me a $250.00 gift card, they lied. I do not recommend this company. read more

I acknowledge that alternate energy carries high quality products but as for what is in the best interest of their clients not so much. I was very dissatisfied with how the sales consultant disregarded my concerns and questions about the job on my house. I felt that the sales consultant tried to feed me things that I wanted to hear and only cared about making commission and not the quality of the outcome. I was under the impression that Alternate Energy was about quality work, not COMMISSION work. I am also concerned for the workers on the job. I'm not sure what the protocol is for "bad" working conditions but I really was worried about their safety, and thought the guys were going to get heat exhaustion. I mean seriously this humid, hot weather lately has been hard to handle and the fact that these guys are on the roof the entire time taking this heat makes me feel like, I want to report it to either the department of labor or health. I tried to convince the workers to take a break but they had such good attitudes and wanted to get the job done. I don't think anyone can really understand how unbearably hot it is unless you are up on the roof working with them. Overall I understand what the company is trying to promote in terms of "quality" but it really is about the whole picture...How the sales consultants honestly handle clients and how the company also treat their employees and take into consideration their health and safety. We just used them for PV solar. the installation went fine and the panels look great though pretty pricey japan-made ones. But come to find, their claims of being an Exclusive dealer for these japan mistubishi panels are not true! A salesrep from a different company even showed me a letter from mistubishi saying any licensed solar company can sell and install their panels. (they sell 'em, too) It hadnt dawned on us that a solar company might actually make up something like this...who'd have thought? Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying there's somthing wrong with our system. So far, it seems to be working fine. But for the $$ we paid, it better(!) We have had Alternate Energy install both our PV system and most recently split air conditioning units. Prior to the contract signing and even 2-3 years after installation, our calls have always been returned promptly. Their prices are fair. They do not "over-sell". The main part of our house, which is a large area, specced out at three split units, but the salesman suggested trying two and then adding a third if necessary. The two work very well, and we do not need a third unit. Their estimators and workmen are professional, friendly, efficient, protect property during installation, and clean up completely. We installed a solar water heater (replacement of inoperable one and relocated from inside closet to outside storage), 18 PV panels and a Tesla battery. I had already signed contracts and started the process with Haleakala but I paid $1500 to cancel everything with Haleakala and switched to AE when Haleakala could not tell me what kind of PV panels were being installed. Alternate Energy installed Panasonic PV panels whereas Haleakala finally disclosed a China brand. Made the switch and with only 2-3 months left in 2019 they were able to expedite everything to ensure 2019 installation so I could capitalize on the last year of the 30% tax credits. I really appreciate the quick install as I was able to get back around $23k on my taxes. I waited to post my first review until I received my first electric bill, which I just got, $26.25! I'm only paying the admin fee and green energy fee. I sold my dishwasher since I don't use one, but I'm happy that I can wash all my dishes with hot water throughout the day. I didn't have any hiccups or issues with any process of my installation. From beginning to end everything went fluidly. read more

Called them 3 times over a period of 2 weeks to get someone to come out and fix it. Each time I was told that someone will get back to me. No one ever did. Finally gave up and called another solar company who was at my house the next day and fixed alternate energy's poor quality system. The sales manager failed to contact me after discussing their PV system at a Remodeling Show. I had to call Alternate Energy to get someone to prepare a proposal. I signed a contract with the sales rep on 10/15/11 after the rep repeatedly promised (both verbally & in writing) that the installation would be completed before the end of the year as requested. Fast forward 60 days later. After a big song & dance, the rep says the "rainy weather" prevents the installation to be completed as promised. I placed two call to the sale manager for an explanation but he didn't have the guts to call back. They did refund my deposit but the PV installation didn't happen causing havoc with my tax situation (because of the solar tax credits). There are a lot of PV contractors out there. Don't be fooled by the prestigious brands they claim to represent. The reputation of the system doesn't matter if the contractor can't do the job. Clearly, Alternate Energy isn't capable of delivering their end of the bargain. read more

Experience was great, worked with Roy Skaggs on designing the system, arrange the financing with CPB and scheduling the install. Our roof was shot and we had to coordinate the work around my roofer. No head butting, screaming or hair pulling. everyone worked well with each other. Super gang of installers, and on leaks. It was great to see that meter spin backwards. One suggestion I would have is to have your roof inspected to be sure that there is 20 to 25 years of life left in it. Any doubts, change it, and have your roofer work with these guys and you will have even better peace of mind. read more

My solar water heater just started making a loud noise that Alternate Energy installed for me over 20 years ago. I never had a problem with my solar water heater in those 20 years. I looked up their warranty of the solar water system and noted that full customer support was guaranteed for the entire lifetime of the system. I called Alternate Energy and a technician came out the same day (which I didn't expect but appreciated). The technician diagnosed the problem and explained everything to me. Although he did not have the available part with him to repair the problem, (in the meantime went with HECO power), another technician came by two days later, installed the part and my solar water heater is now as good as new. All this was done at a minimum cost to me. Alternate Energy absorbed the other costs themselves because the time they spent diagnosing the problem, explaining what they were doing, the repair, transportation to my home and cleanup, I know would've been A LOT more had I called another company. We met with several PV companies gathering information, suggestions and proposals (from large to small companies). This is probably the most important step to the whole process. Frank Okumura at Alternate Energy, came fully prepared to our meeting, he did his homework beforehand. Frank was very professional, knowledgeable and conscientious answering all of our questions and concerns regarding the entire process. He walked us through the entire installation procedure. Out of everyone we met with, Frank made his company shine. Why we decided on Alternate Energy: -Well established local company, family owned and operated since 1993. -Superior Japanese made Mitsubishi panels, with 25 year warranty parts and labor. -Ability to handle all aspects of the PV installation process. Alternate Energy was not the lowest proposal we received and it was not the highest. We decided on them because from the very beginning there was a sense of trustworthiness and we looked at the "whole" package. After living with increasingly frequent vog and several very uncomfortable long hot/humid summers, we threw in the towels and selected AEI to install a whole house split AC system. As retired home owners on a fixed income, we hoped for a smooth trouble-free installation (i.e. no grief). AEI Project Manager Stan Nelson made this happen for us. He is easy to work with, knowledgeable with solutions, understands his customers' needs, and was on-site and involved during installation. To his credit, Stan has assembled a great crew of installers: Roman, a smart man with exceptional experience and work ethetic; Jordan, careful and thoughtful in his work, who treated our house like it was his own; and Jarrett, a courteous and hard-working young man. All professional and top notch! Also worth noting, the ladies in the AEI office (Hoku & Amy) had our rebate paperwork in our hands within days of the installation. The paperwork was accurate and complete. When installing split air conditioning, you ultimately want a company that can provide two things: 1) a reliable/cost effective product (Mitsubishi) and 2) assurance they will be around to service and honor the product warranty. Based on my experience dealing with AEI to date, I know positively that AEI is such a company and I wholeheartedly endorse them. Hawaii is lucky to have such a well-run company with a superior product and excellent customer service. P.S. After experiencing our new air conditioning system, my son, brother-in-law, and neighbor are "sold" on installing air conditioning in their separate homes. We purchased both solar water heater system and PVC system. Both systems were completed early May 2016. We were contacted by HECO July 13, 2016 regarding a "rusty" meter. HECO recommended replacement of the meter and questioned why Alternate Energy had not informed us of this issue. We contacted our salesman and company. We even responded to a Facebook ad requesting electrical work. After many excuses and being told "I'll take care of this." I'll get back to you." We have not heard from anyone! Yes it has proven to be true, Alternate Energy responses quickly when selling you systems. But once the monies are taken, they forget you were once a customer. Shame on you! read more

My sales consultant just didn't hold up his end of the deal. He said he would take care of all permitting and approvals and then failed to follow-up with my HOA and when it came time to install (install scheduled, PV loan secured) I didn't have HOA approval. He conveniently blamed my HOA when in fact it sat for over 6 months waiting for more information from AE to satisfy my HOA design review committee. Everyone makes a mistake, so make it right and let's move on. But since he couldn't or wouldn't be straight with me and the sales manager didn't think it was worth working out I took my business elsewhere and am I ever glad I did. I installed my PV system in May 2013 after shopping around and meeting with 5 different companies. I ended up going with AEI. Rene sat down and presented to their Mitsubishi system, but also discussed other options in a no pressure environment. I've been in sales myself for almost 20 years and can honestly say that his honest, soft sales technique is similar to my own. You really don't need to sell anything if you're honest and can truly stand behind your product as being the best, let the product and warranties sell itself! I was impressed with the entire process; initial presentation, Rene's immediate follow up calls to my additional inquiries, having the installation installed soon enough to meet my timeline (within 3 weeks), the workmanship and cleanup, logon into the online monitoring. Further, the inspection and HECO meter change out all occurred within 4 weeks after installation. I know of a few other friends and family who are still waiting for their net metering change out after 10 months! Of course, they used a different company instead of AEI. I am mostly impressed by the amount of energy that my system is producing, way, way more than what was determined that it would produce, in fact over 30% more. After learning about the different panels and inverters, i opted not for the Mitsubishi, but for a non-traditional package of (28) LG 255w panels with a central inverter utilizing Solar Edge 270 optimisers (1/panel). I figured this option was best since the optimisers would convert the maximum electricity that the panel would generate. My analysis was totally correct! Unlike most systems that market a quality panel that may produce 270w, the Enphase microinverters can't match that amount and usually only convert 215, thereby wasting over 20% of what the panels actually generate (i saw recently that they now go up to 250). Anyhow, during the presentation, it was determined i need a system that could produce 28kwh/day to reduce my HECO bill to $0 ($17/mon). However, the system i went i opted for is still kicking out an average of 40kwh. So why only 4 stars? I believe my system was oversize, I could've used only 20 panels and produced enough electricity to reduce my HECO bill to $0, saving me approx. 30% of the installation cost. It doesn't even deserve one star, but since you can't have zero stars, one it is. Our experience with Aletrnate energy was horrible. Our sales person was Chad, we had NUMEROUS problems with him. Here are just a few of the issues we had to suffer through: he doesn't have the paper work you submitted with him, you have to constantly follow up with him, you are required to use their electricians and there was no communication between Chad and the electrician, it's really difficult to get your referral fee from him, and he doesn't return calls. I don't want to go on in more detail any more, as we are trying to forget our experience with him. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about this company. We were building a new house and wanted to have a PV contractor that would install their conduit within the walls before they were sealed up. Got estimates from 5 different contractors and Alternate Energy's bid was the most reasonable for the size of the system that we wanted. Craig did all the paperwork for the permits and we had everything submitted in time and it didn't hold up our construction.
