Some were pleasant with customers though one lady, a supervisor had the wrong ideas of what customer service and proper etiquette is. Just the basics of my final visit. I took my family for lunch. We ordered lunch specials and a couple extra must-try plates. Two specials hit the table and the third was left waiting for her meal. Unbeknownst to us in the moment, her food was handed to a single patron there for his lunch. The place was filling up with a lunch rush but not so many that had complicated orders. Many were ordering similar lunch specials. Kung pao lunch special was popular. When her order finally arrived the supervisor realized she had given the wrong plate to the customer sitting some tables behind us. Mind you ten minutes had already passed. She quickly went over to him and asked what he had ordered. She then took the plate he was eating from and handed him the fresh plate. He was still holding a half eaten egg roll in his hand. Then she brought the quarter eaten plate and placed it in front of my mother. Before she could leave I stopped her and asked her what she was doing. She simply stated that was her lunch order. I told her she handed my mother someone else's food that they were eating and I watched the whole thing. Why didn't you take that to the back and make a completely new plate of food?! I paid the bill and got the F**k out. That's gross. Also, you gave the other patron new food but cannot do the same for our table?? This place is dead to me. If she could do that, it beckons the question of what else is happening behind the scenes.

Thankfully, Phat Phat stepped in to fill that gap. We drove 30 miles for a late lunch around 2:30 p.m. to hopefully beat the crowds. There's a huge parking lot in the back, the building itself is incredibly unique, and the interior is absolutely beautiful. It feels modern while still being warm and inviting. We wanted to try a variety of dishes, so we ordered two baskets of the Shanghai Soup Dumplings, the Enoki Mushroom appetizer, Chicken Fried Rice, Phat Phat Chicken, Nasi Campur, and finished the meal with the Mango Sago. Everything was incredible. The soup dumplings definitely filled the void that Din Tai Fung left behind. Every dish was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and served piping hot. The Mango Sago was the perfect palate cleanser and a refreshing way to end the meal on a hot summer day. The standout for me was the Enoki Mushroom appetizer. That will be a must-order every time we come back. We also have Indonesian family and have visited Bali, so we were excited to try the Nasi Campur. It was spot on. The satay is another must-order in my opinion. Our waiter was kind and attentive, and the rest of the staff were just as welcoming and pleasant. Overall, this was a fantastic experience, and we'll absolutely be back.

You can make a reservation through Google/Yelp or phone call. Parking is easy since it's in a strip mall. There is also a 3% charge if you use plastic. Just a note, I tried looking at their food pictures on their website, but it kind of runs slow. Sometimes it would freeze. I think they need to fix it. I would return here to try other items. I would highly recommend ordering off their Malaysian menu instead of the miscellaneous. Don't order orange chicken or General Tao's chicken. Very cringe because you can get that literally anywhere. If it's your first time having this, I still recommend it. -kuih talam 5 - I would suggest this if you like pandan. It's not sweet. It has a soft and bouncy texture.

Made it to altThai after a long afternoon of yoga and TGIF happy hour open house and we needed FOOD, not appetizers or more happy hour. We weren't in a rush, good thing as service was slow getting us menus and it wasn't that busy. I made it clear that we just wanted main courses and that drinks were the last thing we needed but they still sent around a new waitress to try and sell us a bottle of wine which I didn't appreciate; Translation- imo they push alcohol here even when you have made it clear you don't want any. I went with a hot duck pineapple curry and my partner the sea bass (NOT endangered yet, just overfished) which took a long time to arrive but both were worth waiting for. I would describe altThai as suburban minimalist industrial, I mean it's not stainless steel in a brick loft with wood floors but kind of pastel/neutral modern bathroom, not zenlike for me. Ok, same for the music that I couldn't hear, noise level loud to very loud. Not much to soak up your neighbors screaming at each other to be heard in the way of carpet, or wall covering/soft ceiling art; loud clean NW suburban anywhere. Back to the food. The waitress had cautioned me their food was hot when I ordered hot and I said that I had heard that and prefer hot. And THEN I think THEY figure I don't really mean hot cause I'm blonde so let's give him lo/medium. That is not a new experience for me, and if I really wanted to nuke it up myself I could, but I prefer cooked chillies in particular THAI chillies NOT jalapeno's which is how my "thai" curry was prepared. Now I'm not a pepper snob (I thought:), but I think there is a big difference in flavor between a couple little tiny burnt red/black thai chillies vs 3 or 4 cheap seeded jalapeno slices. I'm talking depth of hot, and BITE, not just heat scale. THAT plus way too many additional sliced green and red peppers kind of put me off the non-thai pepper aspect of my now jalapeno duck curry which was ok otherwise but definitely not hot as I had specifically requested (my partner agreed) and I had had to confirm. My partner's sea bass could have come out of any good kitchen PLUS a teaspoon of soy sauce and perfectly cooked. Both portions were large enough that we took some home for an appetizer. I thought the sea bass was a little pricey for the 5 ounce serving you get at $18 (they fancy slice some foofoo veggies so your plate doesn't look empty), but my jalapeno duck curry a deal at $13. And you know what I think about a thai restaurant that doesn't cook with thai chillies, I don't think it's a thai restaurant. And now that I think about it, there wasn't a single Asian in there on a Friday night other than one of our two servers, thank you lovely Mai. I am disappointed but we will give altThai another try, next time lunch. I had planned to walk over to Gumrai Thai for desert tonight if somebody else's yoga toes hadn't been hurting them. So far NOT special; might as well try the stir fry at Denny's with a side of jalapenos, 1/3 the price, certainly quieter plus PARKING. UPDATE. After lunch, I rounded my two and a half stars DOWN, TOO LOUD, not special, NOT a Thai kitchen with all those Jalapenos. Sorry. We wanted to like it. read more

I went back to altThai again last night. Yes, it was Friday night but surprisingly, the place was not full and I was seated immediately. That was unexpected though. The new menu was also cough me off guard with even more selections and fancy cover. There is something called spicy duck rolls. I wanted to try that but since the meal wasn't on me, we had spicy mussels as the appetizer. From what I noticed, there is a price change to some of the items. The rice dishes are now $8.50, not the usual $7.95 anymore. And some of the items in the chef's choices are missing. Recovering from a cold, my taste buds needed something spicy and was not disappointed with a good kick from Tom Yum soup and my usual spicy seafood noodles. My girl's steamed sea bass was also very good, but she complained that the grilled asparagus that comes with it was a lil' bit undercooked. Anyway, the overall experience is still the same. Very good. BTW, I saw another review from Steph P. saying that fried tofu there is $8 and the seafood choice for Tom Yum is additional $5? Are we talking about the same altThai? I thought fried Tofu is only $4, not $8 as mentioned in your review. And the seafood choice for Tom Yum (shrimp, scallop, mussel and calamari) has always been $3. Oh, how many shrimp do you expect from a $6.50 salad? Get your facts right before giving out wrong information that may hurt someone's business. We had such a nice dinner here. Honestly, the food was really tasty and felt freshly made. I ordered the Panang curry, and it hit all the right spots--rich, creamy, and full of flavor without being too heavy. The spice level was just perfect, with a little kick but not overwhelming. Kevin, Today, I ordered a dinner-sized entree for lunch with soup, and here's the rundown: 1. Your food is fantastic; no complaints there. 2. Unfortunately, your staff's attitude needs improvement. Initially, the person who took my phone order lacked friendliness and patience. When picking up my order, I found no utensils. Returning to the restaurant, I opted to eat there. Explaining the situation to your manager, she stated, "We don't give a fork or spoon unless you ask!" This policy struck me as uncommon. Getting my food, I requested a plate. The server brought a small appetizer plate, and when I asked for an entree size, the manager claimed it was the largest available. Later, seeing larger plates at nearby tables, I brought it up, and the manager insisted they were reserved for specific entrees, which left me disappointed and skeptical. This is a wonderful spot. Located in the heart of downtown Arlington Heights, not a large restaurant but we didn't feel crammed either. Parking is less then 2 blocks away near the downtown theater. The decor is very modern and beautiful and kept nice and clean. The staff and servers are very nice and the food is top notch! I have returned to this place 3 times in the past year and the service and food quality has been consistent. I was there with my aunts and nephew on Friday. It was our first time. I wanna say, the food was great. However the waitress -wears glasses-who took our order was pretty rude. Acted like we don't understand in english. She refused to say things twice, talked very slow too rudely like "whattttt proteinnnnnn " Her attitude and all that was unnecessary. My wife and I just returned from dining at altThai, the food, the service, as well as, the dining room were absolutely top shelf. I don't know why we hadn't heard of this place, the chicken egg rolls, the papaya salad, the Thai fried rice, the Pad Su -- were excellent. Place seemed very disorganized! Our server was friendly enough but they had 3 different people coming and going to our table and the orders were all messed up. They were definitely trying hard. They have great food- the quality has always been good every time we order. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the prices are a bit high. It's a place we order from only on special occasions because of that, but the food has always been perfect. Get the tempura chicken appetizers- the kids will eat two orders! :) read more

It is definitely the best and most delicious Thai food in Arlington Heights. I recommend this restaurant. It is a little expensive there, but if the restaurant can maintain their food quality consistently and not raise the prices again for a while, I think they will have a winner. read more

The Grilled salmon with teriyaki sauce was really good. The portions for main were also pretty well sized for one person. Although the serving size for appetizers are somewhat less comparatively. Service is good but small tables. The staff is polite and very informative. read more

I used to live in Chicago, and loved Thai food. Let's face it - the northern burbs aren't known for ethnic food. If you want some actual flavor and apparently made with fresh ingrediants, altThai is a good choice. Fairly priced too. read more

We had to stand in the lobby for 5 minutes without much information, while other groups who came in without a reservation after us were seated before us. Furthermore, the reservation was for the "Patio" and while technically we were seated on the "Patio", I would say it was the bottom rung of the patio. Sat at the first table outside the restaurant, underneath the awning with a bird's nest overhead chirping the entire time. Essentially in my opinion, when you make a reservation somewhere, you don't really expect to be seated in probably the worst location they have to offer. Food was pretty decent. We had two bowls basically. Both were okay, like any Sushi style restaurant, prices were a bit high, especially considering their location in the heart of the AH downtown. I would come again, but for a first try it wasn't anything special for sure.
