Try the Kouign Amann (pronounced more like Queen Yamann) think croissant but add more butter and carmelize sugar on the outside. simply the best tasting pastry I think I've ever eaten. Its a really neat space from the revolutionary books on the book shelf to the people you meet and the unique conversations you can have here. they easily could have located in other parts of the city and been more successful but choose to invest in the local community... on top of that they have amazing bakery. Oh, darling. Darling, darling Amaranth. You are (simply) darling. ... and not in an oh-that's-just-so-cute kind of way. Nope. This place is adorable and fantastic on a completely different level. This quaint little café in the Walnut Hill neighborhood is just a stone's throw from Washington Park. I stopped by Amaranth with my friend Willie K after a tour of the Urban Ecology Center in order to get a better idea of the neighborhood, and for a bit of lunch. Anodyne coffee, amazing soups, a super comprehensive tea list, and bakery to die for. Also? A community-centric vibe seemed to permeate the air. Neighbors, friends... all in a divine little setting. Cream city brick and a cozy atmosphere made me feel right at home, despite my being unfamiliar with the area. My coconut curry lentil soup was delicious. Other lunch offerings included inventive, light sandwiches, quiche, and salads. (I really wanted to try the Thai Peanut!) And that bakery. Swoon. That giant cinnamon/pecan roll staring me down from the pastry case was apparently made with a sweet potato puree. Yes, Amaranth. Sink your claws in further. I'll be back for that bakery alone. In my opinion, this is by far the best bakery in Milwaukee and is better than any I have found in New York either. Everything is made in-house, from scratch, using only the best ingredients. Thanks to Yelp & GPS technologies, I found myself navigating to Amaranth Bakery on a cloudy winter morning. Initial observations: Architecture: restored,warm and residential scaled storefront with lots of character typical of MKE's Greek Revival Interior: quaint, cozy, authentic. Floor to ceiling bay windows, community tables, shelves filled with books, and bistro seating up in the bay windows. Patisseries: I had the freshly baked ham & gruyere croissant and Brittany. Perfect. Anodyne coffee, huge bonus. Free refills, I have no words... Deli counter: attractive fresh baked brownies, colorful green salads and bottles of Mexican Coke (the owners are clearly with it) Once I stayed awhile: A short and pleasant exchange with the owner, and I realized the slow food movement is alive and well in Milwaukee. Overheard a conversation the owner was having about a fermentation festival. Very impressive. There's a strong community atmosphere that wafts through the cafe just as the neighbors and customers bustle in and out, sit and chat; and exchange community event conversations. very inviting and pleasant all around, this Californian felt right at home. read more

Part of me is surprised that I'm giving a cafe five stars. But, Amaranth Bakery deserves all five and more. Local. Heart healthy. Small. Conscientious. Personable. Perfect. This place is nestled in the Walnut Hill area of Milwaukee, a neighborhood that seems to have been ignored by the broader community. Fortunately, places like this (and the gallery across the street) are helping to revitalize the area. The guy who runs the place, David, is super nice and really helpful. The food itself was the biggest surprise. Amaranth was actually out of the two items I wanted on the menu (quiche and mushroom/wild rice soup), so I got the sandwich and bean/squash soup instead. I thought I was getting "second place" food, but this stuff got the grand prize. Delicious. And, best of all I felt really good about eating here. They serve professionals in the area as well as people from the community. When I go back to Milwaukee to visit family, I will also be going back to Amaranth Bakery again and again. P.S. By far my favorite place for bread or pastries in the city. In fact, their scones are so good it keeps me from buying a croissant (although sometimes I get both!) Lisbon Avenue is my alternate route between downtown Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, primarily for when I'm driving during rush hour and want to avoid the highway. I've driven past this bakery ever since it went in, and had even read about it a few times. Today, I decided to check it out on my way downtown. This is definately not what you would expect in a blighted area of town such as 32nd and Lisbon. When you walk in, you can immediately smell bread being baked and warm soup. The owner greets you, and gave me several recommendations (I didn't want anything too sweet). I went with the cranberry walnut scone and took that & a cup of coffee to go. The scone was huge and had a great nutmeg flavor in it, and I ripped it apart over the next few hours. Will definately go back, maybe for lunch or soup next time. One tip: don't fill your coffee cup all the way up. Lisbon is a rough road with many cracks and potholes, and every bump I hit resulted in spilled coffee all over my clothes and car. read more

What a beautiful, beautiful business. I went here today for a warm bowl of soup and some fresh juice made by The Juice Kitchen. I passed on the baked goods today, but get yourself a cookie...or five. You won't regret it! Amaranth has amazing food and drinks with a focus on organic, fair-trade, and locally sourced ingredients. The food is phenomenal, and their role in building community just makes this place divine. I've seen my fair share of other small business owners share the space, which only adds to the good vibes of Amaranth. Today there was someone selling locally-made gourmet chocolates, and as I mentioned, The Juice Kitchen shares their healing brews here a few days a week. The "home-like" nature of this place just warms you from the inside out, and there is a welcoming energy toward all. As a Milwaukee transplant, I am always grateful to find a place here that I can expect a variety of skin tones, accents, and cultural backgrounds under one roof. These are the places where I was raised to feel most comfortable, and they certainly haven't been easy to find. Yay for community, positive energy, and diversity. Cheap and delicious are the two descriptive words that first come to mind. Living in Washington Heights, we are blessed with the Farmers Market being just a hop, skip, and a step away from our home, in Washington Park. Yesterday we went to the Farmer's Market and almost overlooked the bakery stand somehow, and man would we have missed out if we had. The selection was endless. I got two seeded bagels and an onion bagel, a loaf of wheat bread, a cranberry-something cookie, and a blueberry thing. (You must excuse my lack of knowledge on the last two items, as the were really my boyfriends.) We got all this for $11. The bagels were to die for, best flavour I have ever had in a bagel. The wheat bread was okay. The cookie and blueberry thing were awesome. We had never actually heard of this bakery before yesterday and we will be sure to pay it a visit now! read more

Fantastic little cozy cafe. Pride in ownership as well as pride in the local community are evident immediately. When we came in there were 2 small groups at tables seemingly discussing community enhancement programs over coffee and scones...it was a very warming thing to see, and made us feel good seeing a diverse group like that. We had quiche, Rasberry tart, and a chocolate cranberry scone, with a mocha, and a french press coffee... Here is the part that should sell you on the dedication to customer satisfaction... The regular coffee machine was not functioning properly... so an upgrade to FrenchPress was done without hesitation and without me asking... Found this little bakery/coffee house while on a trip up to Milwaukee using our Yelp app of course After searching for a nice quiet coffee shop this spot popped up and it had some great reviews and pictures which always sell me and I do so trust my loving yelp community So we were like 15 minuets away and arrived at a nice area of town you know quite streets people working on their yards type of area and we pulled right up to the place. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the owner who was real nice and chatty so he explained the different types of coffees and pastries he had made fresh today. The choices were tough because it was my cheat day and I wanted it to count so we got the pecan cinnamon roll OMG that was worth the cheat plus we got the cinnamon sugar cover brioche bun also amazing but the good part is they weren't to overly sweet and I could taste all the flavors of the dough and toppings which I appreciate We had the Brazilian roast coffee which was strong but not a bitter aftertaste which we enjoyed and I had the mocha latte which is my favorite and this place made it enjoyable The owner came out and talked to everyone at the place and seems like a great guy and that's what you want at a place like this so anytime I'm back in the Milwaukee area I'd make a special trip to this cute little shop tucked in a nice neighborhood again Thanks read more

This place is a local gem! Their bakery is phenomenal! I got the pecan roll, at around 8:00 a.m., and it had been just taken out of the oven. Doesn't get fresher than that! I hope to get back soon! This place is a little gem! They have some of the best baked goods in the region. The Croissants with Chocolate are AMAZING here, as well as every other baked good. They also have some very good sandwiches, soups and coffee. It is on a main street, and little small, however they have seating inside and there is a feeling of "home" while you eat here. I find the after taste of the ham and cheese croissant like pastry puff to be so distasteful, that I had to give it one star. I would never have gone to that neighbourhood and to this place, but for so many of the five star reviews.. 1. The owners and customers were both very nice.. It did not seem like a safe neighbourhood and I would not go there after dark. 2. This review is only about ONE dish I tried. It is a ham and cheese croissant sandwich. It left a "fatty" unpleasant taste in my mouth. Tastes more like "bulk made" than from a specialized bakery. I took two bites and discarded it. The taste was so bad, that I had to write this review and give it one star. Their soup looked delicious.. but I didn't feel like trying it, after the distasteful pastry. It is a tiny place.. Just a couple of tables. Seems clean enough. I get no pleasure in writing one star review for this. The owners seem very nice people.. I got two nasty messages because of this 1 star review.. I have no malice.. At Yelp, we are expected to provide honest reviews.. and I rely on such reviews.. I felt that it was such a waste of my Saturday morning, to have gone to this place, based on other reviews. Oh, so charming! I just wish this place was a little closer to my neighborhood... On second thought, I take that back because having it be a little farther away means that each trip is special, with a very obvious purpose when heading out to Walnut Hill; JUST to get a delicious quiche, or some amazing pastry. Fantastic. This is my favorite cafe/bakery in Milwaukee. It has a laid-back feel like you're walking into a friend's house. All the food I've had here has been delicious! I've tried the lemon tart--amazing, tart taste, the lentil soup--fantastic flavors, several sandwiches--all good and various drinks and bakery items--all stellar. With the third ward's Harlequinn long gone, Amaranth has to be on the shortlist for the best bakery in the city. Breads, cookies, specialty french pastries, you name it and they execute it near perfectly. The cafe fare is very good as well, not to mention veg/vegan friendly. My only gripe would be the obvious lack of training when it comes to espresso drinks. They're not very good here. Stick with regular coffee and you'll have a great experience. Oh yeah, this place closes up during the summer, so make sure you show your support while they're still in operation. read more

So, I'm an old man and sometimes things take a while to gel in my thought process. These little "Brittanies" they make at Amaranth are Kouign-amann, the small version they make called Kouignettes. I have read about and lusted after them for decades and the lust was well rewarded..As per my previous warning they are actually quite hideous..so stay away until afternoon when they are all gone!! read more

Arguably the best croissants in the Metro Milwaukee area (in which I've scoured). To defend that statement I took some of Amaranth's croissants to a couple graduate students from France at UWM and they declared the croissants to be no different than what you'd get in Paris. Their almond croissants are even better, but watch out, they alternate making butter croissants and almond croissants every other day. Although, either way you win. read more
