If you are going to give this overpriced, rude staffed (cashier lady), below average quantity serving indian restaurant 5 stars, you haven't tried anything outside of this place. This place is so wonderful. I have been taking my mother for Mother's Day brunch for years and cannot say enough wonderful things. The garden area is beautiful as is the dining room so the ambiance is truly lovely. It is all you can drink, champagne, mimosas, bloody marys and screw drivers for brunch as well as an incredible buffet. For vegetarians this is one rare brunch that is worth every penny. There are a ton of delicious vegetarian food and if you have room, rice pudding and chocolate cake. It is pricier than other Indian buffets in the area, but truly worth it. While the decor is quite lovely and the gardens outside of the building are quite beautifully maintained, the service, staff, and food are not up to par. Let's start with the service and staff. They are rude, abrasive, and unapologetic whenever they are at fault. They are often running late for reservations. Tables are clearly never ready - and they are quick to make excuses as to why YOU need to wait. Once you eventually do make it to your seat, the waiters try to rush you through your meal - and if you arn't ready with your order - dont worry, he'll be back in a mere 1 minute to see if you are - so be prepared. Now, the food. While I normally wouldn't complain too much, the food varies day to day. You can go there and have a fabulous quality dish if they are NOT busy, and its NOT a Saturday or Sunday brunch. However, if they are busy, or it is brunch time, beware. Your food may cold, overcooked, or even "off". It seems that there is a clear lack of communication in the kitchen and management as to time management and how many tables can be seated at one time. Overall I would say that the Ambassador Dining Room should be passed over. Its not worth the effort to fight for a seat. For all you are fighting for is a pretty scene where you will be rushed through mediocre food - at pretty expensive prices. read more

Wow - Ambassador is making a comeback, or we happened to order the right things. We have always loved the ambiance and service there. They are wonderful to us. But the food this time was outstanding - Shahi Korma (Lamb with nuts and raisins in a cream sauce) was amazing, and my wife's Malai Kofta was really good as well. They've updated their menu over the past years, and it now includes two Chaats. We had the Chicken Chaat which was very good. And finally, their iced tea has always been really nice - a nice black tea with lemons, oranges, and a hint of sweetness from the fruit. When you add in the back patio (not an option in January), it is a wonderful spring and fall dining place, almost idyllic on the covered porch. Four of us had dinner on the terrace last night,for my daughter's birthday. Nothing like it in Baltimore! Service was beyond expectations. Eggplant appetizer was phenomenal! House cocktail was the BEST! The wine we chose was 2004 Elderton Shiraz...perfect w/ Tandoori Lamb Filet, which could have been more marinated/ tenderized. Chicken Tikki Masala was weak, according to my wife...better at other places. Desserts were mixed. Coconut ice cream was over the top. Cardimom Ice cream was great!..Key Lime Pie--best at Joe's in Miami...take it off the menu..no place in this Indian restaurant. Gulab Jamun was terrible...too bready...too large...much better elsewhere. Chai Tea was fantastic!......could use some live music, belly dancers, etc... Would go there again..and again! Oh, hello, little dish of homemade salted caramel ice cream. Why can't I find ice cream like you in my grocer's freezer? You are so unbelievably salty and caramelly that you are like the most ice creamy salted caramel ever, smooth and creamy and sweet and salty. Yes, I taste the real salt, and it perfectly complements your deep, velvety caramelliness. You are an astonishing dessert achievement. Why is my tummy so full when you finally get to the table? Could it be the array of mouthwateringly tender baby lamb chops with their savory, citrusy braise? Maybe it was the mildly spiced black lentils on their soft bed of fragrant Basmati rice, each grain a work of tiny art. No, no, it was the Goa fish! Two filets-worth of huge chunks of soft but firm white meat, the crispy skin candied with sweet tamarind sauce. One side is done and the bones lift right out and TADA! there's another whole side of amazing fish. It's like two two meals in one. But don't worry, incredible homemade salted caramel ice cream, I will eat you. Slowly. All the while imagining a huge vat of you, surrounding me with your chilly, salty, creaminess. One of the best meals I've had in Baltimore. We went on Christmas Eve and enjoyed the ambiance of the fire place. Service was very good and the food was delicious. I especially liked the Chicken Chaat. There were 5 of us and we all enjoyed our meals. My daughter said we need to make this a tradition and we will. Do not allow the cozy, regal ambience influence your view of the food. We tried 17 items in the menu and they all tasted below average to poor. The chicken tikka Marsala had tough chewy meat with little sauce. The lamb vindaloo was equally tough and the curry tasted diluted. The vegetable and seafood dishes were no better. The breads were fine. Even if you don't mind paying a high price, this place does make you feel cheated. read more

It's tucked away in this beautiful garden type area and they sat us at a semi-private table right by the fountain. While the food tastes fine and the ambiance is nice, the service is not great, most of the employees appear unhappy, and the menu prices are outrageous. The online menu prices are not current. In comparison to a take-out menu I picked up in July of 2012, the entree prices seem to have gone up ~$6 per entree. I went alone recently, ordered saag paneer and chana, an order of naan, and kheer. I tipped 15%, bringing my total bill to a $51.30. I could make this meal every day for a month at that price. The buffet is also overpriced: beware -- even though there is a table with mango juice and orange juice sitting directly adjacent to the actually food tables, you will be charged separately for drinks if you help yourself. Although they have coffee sitting out on another table, if you ask for chai tea instead, you will be charged additionally. Deceitful, no? I'm done with this place. read more

I went to The Ambassador on Saturday night (for the first time) with a reservation for four. First, there is no sign outside and the area is poorly lit, we literally drove in circles with the GPS for 10 minutes before we figured out where the restaurant was. When arrived, we gave our name and reservation time and seemed a little frazzled, like maybe they had lost the reservation. They sat us after 10 minutes at a tiny table for 4. It was clearly supposed to be a 2-top. Oh well, no big deal. We took a look at the menu and were a little disappointed. They are all plated dishes, I guess we were expecting family style. Again, no big deal. We ordered 4 dishes and our waiter was kind enough to say they would serve them family style. The food did come out fairly quickly. We had Chicken Tikka Masala, Shahi Korma, Bengan Bhartha (eggplant), and Shrimp Adrak. The Chicken Tikka Masal was decent, I wouldn't say it was the best I ever had. The Shahi (lamb) was cold! The sauce was different than Lamb korma, but that wasn't even the bad part. The temperature was as if it had been sitting for 10 minutes. The eggplant was delicious, and the restaurant's saving grace. The shrimp was bar the far the most disappointing. It was so overseasoned, and under all these "decorative" veggies was 3 pieces of shrimp. I mean come on, there were 4 people at the table, you couldn't have thrown on an extra piece? Especially because the price was over $20 for 3 pieces of shrimp that probably cost the restaurant $1.00 wholesale! Also, our Naan was burned. The atmosphere was nice, but after all the Mediocre food and experience I can only give this place 2 stars. Beware of the pink sprinkles at the hostess stand, I thought they might be mints and it was licorice flavored, so gross! I would probably not go back to this restaurant unless I had to. read more

Honestly, some of the reviews turned me off, and seemed to focus on the dining experience more so than the food. Overall, yes the atmosphere is gorgeous, and yes the service is excellence, but as a indian, I am here to critique the food, which I found to be pretty good. Yes, its not THE BEST indian food ever, but I really enjoyed the food and spices. I wanted my dish to be a bit spicier but that is according to taste. Most people mistake good indian food, and are given very these creme filled sauces that actually kill the flavor, I was happy to find that this place did not kill flavor with layers of cream and butter, I could taste the cumin, the red chili pepper, and authentic punjabi flavors. The samosas were alright, and a bit oily for my taste, but went well with the tamarind as most samosas do. I have had tons of mutter paneer and am therefore quite critical, but I enjoyed the flavor and didn't think the paneer was plasticy or fake, my boyfriend ordered the vindaloo and that had an AMAZING flavour, the raita accompanied it well. Overall the only down side was the prices, for the food and amount it was a bit too overpriced, but if you have a craving for some good indian food this place hit the spot for me! read more
