Possibly the worst Indian food I have had. The food was sweet and lacked flavor. After paying over $100 for 4 people, the least you can expect is decent food and quality service. Our server was rude, obnoxious and literally demeaning; he had the audacity of explaining how deep frying works because their deep fried cauliflower may have had an insect in it. All we wanted was a nice graduation dinner but it didn't even come close. Never going back there again! read more

Behold the British Raj in Baltimore. You are here for the ambiance, not the best Indian food ever. Segway through the dim dining room with it's over-puffed chairs and abundant tablecloths. Enter the gorgeous patio with a view of a formal garden. Wicker lounge chairs, loads of tea lights on the rolling glass doors (the huge kind that roll back into the ceiling) and two fireplaces. The food is delicious, and yes, pricey for what it is. Pushy waiters will give you the side-eye and hover if you stay too late. Excellent buffet for a leisurely lunch. read more

Most remarkable place Ive ever eaten, it was night, we sat outside, the servers treated us in a way that reminded me of "The Butler" just people who respect their career, looks like a handsome family runs the restaurant. Everything we had was good. My date had some sort of vegetable medley, I choose Lamb vandoori? which was a curry sauce. Extra pita bread should be ordered, we got pita with the onion, I would suggest trying another pita. The mojito seemed a bit heavy on something but I went for another so that tells you it was pretty good, and my date had the same and thought the mojito was great. It was a nice thing to walk to the fountain... for some reason I expected it to lead to some secret garden, but it is just a nice spot to chill on the many benches circling the fountain, just really astounded. read more

Best Indian food in Baltimore hands down. It's really nice inside and though I haven't eaten outside (yet) I hear that's awesome. It's a little hard to find the right entrance and it's in a really weird location (inside a condo/apartment building??) but once you figure out where you're going, it's fine. read more

For a change we decided to share a number of entries so we each had a nice sample of the different foods and favors that we love coming here for. I realize that last month marked the 20th anniversary of my first visit in August 1996 to the Ambassador restaurant. I don't know how they do it but the food has been consistently superb and I have eaten here in excess of 200 times. Located in North Baltimore near what I like to call, "The Prestigious School District," resides a fine Indian Restaurant. The building in which this restaurant is located is marvelous...looks like something out of Hogwarts. The food is simply delish!! This is definitely fine dining...nice white table clothes and all! This would not be my 'regular' Indian place by any means considering their entree prices are about double of any other Indian Restaurant I've been to, but it's definitely nice for a special occasion or just to treat yourself. They have an "outdoor" sitting area with a beautiful view of a water fountain...highly recommend! Also, start your meal off with their delicious veggie samosas! A dinner here will be one of the best ones in the Charles Village/Canterbury area. The ingredients are super fresh, the dishes are always good, but it's the desserts that I still reminisce about. The reason I really love this place though, is the brunch buffet. Come in elastic waist pants, mentally prepare yourself for the mimosas, and sit outside if it's warm. There's a garden patio that makes you feel like a part of the bourgeoisie in a foreign country. They draw the shades and light the hearth at night. Sit outside. The place is a little hard to find, but the immense regret of not being able to eat there will make you keep looking. read more

Ambassador Dining Room has the most upscale, beautiful settings found in an Indian restaurant (in Baltimore...or anywhere). Wonderful garden with open airiness in the summers, and closed off with cozy fireplace in the winters...this is a great place for formal dinners or even romantic date nights. Ambience really reminds me of colonial British clubs that are found throughout India and their staff are always courteous and helpful. The food tends to be on the milder spice level, their buffet has a wide spread which is usually quite delicious. I go to Ambassador for their ambience as much as their food. read more

I never had Indian food, at least as far as I know, until I went here. Un-freakin-believable. The food looked like fresh puke (sorry but it does!) and was about the most delicious grub I had in a while. The setting is quite relaxing and the service is excellent, from host to waiter to coat room attendant.. Highly recommended. read more

Always a great departure from the same night out dining. Kir Singh runs a great kitchen and provides a great experience for any diner. Indian food the way it should be in a classic old world setting. This is the worst Indian food I have ever had. I came there based on the recommendations and I am super disappointed. I ordered the shrimp and I got 3 shrimp only. The shrimp was too tough to chew with no gravy on them. This shrimp meal cost me $28.95 (3 shrimp), a handful of white rice with 7 grains of sweet peas on it and a spoonful of spinach. That's the full course. It was heartbreaking to be charge this type of money. Also, no bread on the table. We asked about bread and the waiter said that they don't have bread to give we must buy it. I brought my fiancée there to celebrate his birthday and I want you to know that I'll not recommend this place to anyone. I will give this place 2 stars only for the atmosphere. The portions are ridiculously small. We needed to eat when we got home. My fiancée ordered the lamb which was so thin it barely had meat on it. The Ambassador is one of my fave dining spots in Baltimore. The food is excellent, the service amazing...and the setting makes you feel as though you could be on the other side of the world, eating in some wonderful restaurant in Mumbai. And they have a gorgeous covered porch that overlooks a pretty garden...its useable year round with glass "garage doors" that can roll up so that it's open air in good weather, and closed when it's cold or rainy, with a fireplace at either end. White tablecloths, old world service. I've read reviews saying it's overpriced...I think this is because many people are used to inexpensive Indian buffets and restaurants....the Ambassador is not that place. It is upscale, and most fans know that. If you're looking for cheap Indian food - go somewhere else and stop complaining. read more

Neat place. I think this is an excellent place to go on a summer night and sit out on the back patio next to a garden with fountains, being served by a traditional British-Indian style service. The food is definitely modified for American tastes (my wife tells me) but I find it excellent. I can't comment on the buffet - I usually loathe buffets and avoid them like the plague, but murgh tikka was excellent as well as the other dishes we ordered. Another reviewer said jeans were inappropriate here. I have my doubts; I think both my wife and I wore jeans (maybe we were inappropriate!) I think the rules have changed a lot in the last 30 years; I doubt there is any place remaining in Baltimore that requires mandatory jackets, and Charleston and Prime Rib are probably the only places in the city where I'd even consider wearing a tie. read more

Pricy, but amazing Indian cuisine and good service. Casual, clean, and filling.

My partner (Mike) and I decided to come here to take advantage of another amazing restaurant week deal. While we had some difficulty finding the place (it's inside the Ambassador Apartments), we were greeted by some very friendly staff when we first entered. Upon entering the restaurant, we noticed that it was beautifully decorated. Right in the main entry way is a beautiful candle-lit statue of Ganesha (one of the Hindu deities). After about 20 minutes, we were seated. While this might seem like a long wait time, the restaurant was extremely crowded when we arrived. I should also make note that the male staff are all wearing suits while the ladies are dressed in traditional indian clothing. With that being noted, there's no need to overdress as most customers were wearing casual wear (although I wouldn't necessarily recommend sneakers or hats). When it was time to get seated, we were taken to the back of the restaurant to a separate part of the dining room which was accented by a wall of windows and two fireplaces. Outside of the windows is a beautiful botanical garden. Overall, it's a beautiful setting for a nice dinner. Upon being seated, our server greeted us within moments. She was dressed in traditional Indian garb and was very friendly. We proceeded to order each of our courses and ask for a few additional minutes to look over the drink menu. After our order was placed, our server came back in less than 5 minutes to see what we wanted to drink. We decided on a pitcher of Sangria. Within about five minutes of placing our order, our appetizers were delivered to the table. I ordered the potato samosa and Mike ordered the Chicken Chaat. I'm a huge fan of samosas and this one definitely did not disappoint. The outer shell was flaky and delicious. The filling was even more delicious and seasoned very well. My only complaint is I would have liked it to pack a little more punch, but all-in-all, it was delicious. Now, before tonight, I had never tasted Chicken Chaat. After tonight, I will be trying a lot more of it. I have never tasted something so full of flavor in my life. In fact, I sat at the table stealing bite after bite of his dish. I also quickly pulled out my phone and began looking up recipes for Chicken Chaat. The Sangria was also quite tasty which I didn't expect. Not too sweet, not too strong, but a good flavor overall. Potato Samosas: 4.5/5 Chicken Chaat: 6/5 Sangria: 4/5 Shortly after we finished our appetizers, our entrees came out. Mike got the Chicken Tikka Masala (his usual) and I tried the Murgh Tikka (something I've never tried before). The entree also came with our choice of Naan -- we both ordered the Garlic Naan. The Murgh Tikka was an amazing chicken dish that had a delicious smoked flavor with a yogurt lime sauce. The sauce was so tasty and the chicken was so moist and flavorful. The entree came with Basmati rice and some sort of bean dish that pack a delicious punch of flavor. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to try something new. Mike's Chicken Tikka redefined my expectations for this dish. It was some of the most succulent chicken I have ever tasted. The sauce was the perfect blend of sweet and savory that I expect from Chicken Tikka Masala. My only complaint is I wish the portions were a bit bigger (although they're already quite large) so we could have taken some home to eat. Beyond the entrees, the Naan was also delicious. The garlic flavor was spot on and not too overbearing like some other restaurants we've tried. Murgh Tikka: 5/5 Chicken Tikka Masala: 5/5 Garlic Naan: 5/5 Once we finished our entrees, our plates were promptly cleared and our desserts came out within 5 minutes. Mike ordered Marjolaine (Hazelnut cake layered with chocolate mouse and covered in chocolate ganache) and I ordered the Gulab Jaman (Sweet Indian doughnut floating in a honey cardamom syrup). I cannot explain how delicious both of these desserts were. The Marjolaine was moist and not overly sweet. The ganache layered into the cake just added to the moistness. Although Mike is not generally a fan of chocolate cakes, he liked this (as did I). He said it's nothing crazy or new, but it's really good. The Gulab Jaman was another delicious surprise. It was a home made donut hole served in a martini glass with the sauce in the bottom. It was one of the best desserts I've had in a long time. The mix of the sweet donut with the mildly sweet honey sauce was delicious. Marjolaine: 4/5 Gulab Jaman: 5/5 Overall, this was a great experience. From the service, to the decor, and the food -- it was all great. The guy, who I assume was the owner by the way he interacted with the regulars, was very friendly when we entered and left the restaurant. So, let me start by saying that I have not been disappointed by anything I have ever tried here. (I have now been at least 4 times) The atmosphere in the outdoor dining area on a warm spring/summer night is amazing and you feel as though you are stepping into another time and place. It is the perfect 'date' place. We have ordered an appetizer sampler plate and liked everything on it. The eggplant appetizer dish is great for people who are not too sure about Indian food. (It could be a meal in and of itself.) The puris and the naans are fresh and the fish, lamb and vegetarian dishes are all excellent as well. We are always too full to splurge on dessert, but when we do-- the chai is the best I have had anywhere in Baltimore. The other desserts are great too. If you want a quiet, intimate date spot on a warm evening (although in the winter they have a lovely fireplace), this is it. read more

The food is outstanding, and the atmosphere is really enjoyable, especially on a warm night. The menu is expensive, unfortunately, and I don't see how you could have a moderately priced meal there. I ate at the Ambassador during Baltimore's restaurant week, during which it advertised $20 and $30 three-course meals on line. The menu given either didn't distinguish between the two price groups, or offer the advertised $20 items; either way, the meal was more expensive than expected. I've been going to the Ambassador for years and both service and food have gotten increasingly poorer. The only reason I go, and will give it two stars, is because of the ambiance, which is wonderful, both summer, in the open garden, and winter, near the fireplaces. The owner falls all over himself, as though you are a long lost friend, and then proceeds to serve third rate food at first rate prices. It is way overpriced for what your get. The servers used to be eager to please. Now, they give perfunctory service and the last two times I had the feeling they were exhausted and annoyed that we were there. (I've been told by a reliable source that the management keeps their tips.) The mixed appetizer platter for two, which used to be plentiful, was served on a small plate instead of the usual large dinner plate, cold and dried out, only enough for one. The chicken dishes are dry, and even though I requested mild, it was very spicy. They charge extra for nan, and don't even bring out the small bowl of chutney as they used to. Overall, the food tastes like it was tossed back into a pot and re-served. You can get better Indian food in just about any other Indian place in Baltimore for about 1/2 the price. Too bad, it used to be a good place. Looks like the management got greedy. read more

Two different prices; one for cash and one for cards? The Ambassador Dining Room has the most wonderful, romantic ambiance. Having enjoyed a few meals here before, my fiance and I returned to have brunch one Saturday afternoon. We were disappointed to say the least. Although just after a snowstorm, I don't think it's ever appropriate to serve gone-off chicken. With such a horrible taste in our mouths, we decided to get the check and make for the door. It was quite a surprise to receive the check with the instructions that a cash payment would result in a lower tab! Are they skimming off the top? Whatever is going on at the Ambassador lately, I do not know, but it's clearly unprofessional and dishonest. I suspect the management needs a shake-up. read more

Great setting in the warmer months when the patio/garden area is open. Other than that, after eating here maybe 8 times over the last 10 years it is very expensive and the portions are small. They charge for Naan and my wife and I shared one app, Naan and an entree each (she chicken, I lamb) and with one martini and one glass of wine it was $75/$90 with tip which is outrageous. read more

This is my all time favorite Indian restaurant which is hard to find in Baltimore! The service is amazing they are so friendly and give you a great dinning experience. I liked the atmosphere a lot. It is kind of old-worldy and calm, with a very nice back veranda that looks out over a green area. Tables are well separated and the ambiance is very pleasant. The service is attentive but not intrusive. The menu and wine list is good. I had the Raita as a starter and Jingha Karari--asked for "spicy"--as entree. The raita was excellent. The Jingha Karari was pretty good: interesting spices, good tasting prawns. But the sauce was just a tiny bit watery, and the plate should have been heated to keep the food hot. All in all the entree was fine but not as good as I was hoping. I also had mango chutney (good portion, and good) and garlic nan (good also). Normally I focus totally on food quality, but here I am giving four stars based on an unusually nice ambiance and good, but not very good entree. I would compare this place a bit to Bombay Club in DC (near the White House), but the food is not up to the same high standard as Bombay Club. This is a restaurant that seems to be going south. While three of my group were satisfied with their meals I was not satisfied with mine. We always order the vegetable cuddy that floats in a rich curry sauce. However this time the curry sauce was a strange color, had a different texture and along with that, no taste. I was very disappointed as I always liked to dip my naan bread in the sauce and let the spices tingle my taste buds. My husband had the crab Malabar and said it was very spicy but he likes that fiery flavor on all of his food even though it drowns out the taste of the contents of the meal. I had the salmon dish (Fish Tikka) with a tomato coulis. The fish was not up to the usual standards and was a bit mushy. It used to be seared to perfection and topped with a nice thick red sauce. This time the sauce was runny and it did not have the same taste that I remembered during my past visits. The lentils were not a pretty pale yellow - they were a pale brown and they were lukewarm. The spinach side was acceptable but it too was lukewarm. Considering the high prices - the restaurant is not providing a great experience for the customer. I also noticed that the portions have shrunk or my eyes are getting worse. I did have a nice appetizer - the chilled pumpkin soup was thick and tasty and the portion was ample. The bread is still good and so were the ice cream desserts. I am sorry to see this restaurant lower its quality but I guess it's hard to stay on top for many years. It's still a beautiful location to dine but but you can't eat the location and overall the food has gone downhill. read more
