    Patio seating is ultra cozy!

Winter wonderland in the cozy Ambassador Dining Room. Delicious food and impeccable service!

Ambassador apartment building. Restaurant is on ground floor.

I left Baltimore 15 years ago, came back for a work trip. For a city that sometimes suffers under inadequate leadership, it's places like ADR that do the real work of keeping the cultural reputation of the area intact. ADR has been open since 1997, operating in the first floor of the Ambassador apartment building on Canterbury. It's a block from University Ave in the Hopkins Lacrosse corridor. Having not seen my father since before the pandemic, he picked me up and suggested the meal, one of his regular haunts. First off, the building is really beautiful. I think we're talking depression-era tudor revival? IDK, I'm not an architect. So there's lots of dark wood trim, intricate plasterwork, large fireplaces. Very stately. Now the food. We ordered (1) the calamari, which was pleasantly sautéed in some kind of chili oil. No deep fried rubber here! (2) The lamb samosas, which were surprisingly light on the inside, not super heavy like the lentil ones can be. (3) The medium-spice special biryani, with chicken, lamb (awesome) and shrimp (awesomer). I need to emphasize that the shrimp in my biryani were absolutely huge. I mean those things were gigantic and succulent. Great experience with those shrimp! We both ordered the key lime ice cream for dessert. Dad told me there's a local place that makes the ice cream on spec for them. More of a rumor, but it is great ice cream. Key lime (and citrus in general) is a favorite of mine, and this ice cream holds its own very well against some other competition. When reading for this review, I found out that ADR was awarded best Indian restaurant for a second year by Baltimore Magazine. No surprises there, these folks absolutely know what they're doing.

My darling and I come here frequently for birthdays and anniversaries. It's a lovely romantic ambience. Excellent choice for a date if you like Indian food. We always get an order of samosas and my honey gets lamb or salmon, and I order aloo gobi. The samosas are delicious and my aloo gobi is always flavorful and hearty. My honey enjoyed the lamb vindaloo extra extra spicy during our last visit.

It is pricey but it's definitely a nice restaurant for big events or special occasions so I understand where the price is coming from! The food itself was alright. I had the Bengan Bhartha which had an excellent spice level at the medium level. I couldn't imagine getting the highest level! I also liked the appetizers too! The naan was a bit weird - it kind of reminded me of frozen naan I've had from grocery store but everything else was good!

Their Baltimore Restaurant Week menu was a 7 course (!!) meal that was truly an experience and absolutely worth the price. My favorites were the chicken cutlets, the sorbet, and the white chicken curry. Honorable mention to the side dishes because we got refills and they were so good. When we first arrived, the restaurant was pretty busy, but as it got closer to closing it became much less crowded, which made the experience even more enjoyable. This is a hidden gem dining experience in Hampden. I've already recommended it to friends and will definitely be back to try more items on the menu!

I had the Kolhapuri Goat Curry & Gatlic this Naan bread, both of which are fantastic choices. The broth of the curry was nice and rich with a good level of spice, much of what a good curry should have. The goat itself had a bit more bones than I'd prefer, but overall even those were extremely tender & flavorful. Additionally I had used the Naan bread to help finish up the broth, which ended with a very satisfying comfort meal. The service & ambiance itself was also a pleasure. I personally prefer small establishments to avoid unnecessary noise while dining. Mix that with the incentive staff and you'll definitely enjoy yourself on your vist here, much like I did.

The food arrived hot and well packed. The shrimp were very tasty. Not much crispiness, but that is to be expected with delivery. The sauces that came with it were very delicious. I enjoyed the butter chicken. The chicken was perfectly tender and a good amount. The sauce could have used a bit more flavor in my opinion. I did order mild just to see what the baseline spice was, and would definitely go medium or more next time. The sauce was a nice consistency. The rice was well cooked, but no flavor on its own. I have been to some Indian spots in which the rice itself is very aromatic and flavorful with some spices cooked into it; this was more just basic rice. Still good with the butter chicken. The garlic naan was tasty! Overall, this was a decent spot! I'd order again and try a different spice level and some other menu items. Prices were fair for portions in my opinion.

We got the Kale Chaat, amazing, still talking about it. Crispy kale, yogurt w/ mint, sweet and savory and crispy. Omg, you gotta get it, I want it again already! For dinner I got the chicken dumplings (momo) and my husband got the tandoori chicken. It was actually too much food! The momo was delish but the tandoori chicken was the star entree for sure. It came with a side of masala sauce which was so tasty to dip in. Everything was actually pretty reasonably priced as well. My only complaint is that it was freezing inside - lots of guests wore their coats! They had a ton of to go orders ready - I'd definitely do that in the future, but it is nice inside! The mirch malai tikka is basically a deconstructed chicken tikka masala. It was excellent. The chicken was grilled with crispy edges and the sauce was complex and decadent. We also tried the goat curry, which was rich and delightful. Sadly, the plan rice that came with the meals was terrible. Like, it felt musty, almost? It did not smell or taste right and we did not eat it. Our waiter was great, attentive but no hovering, and was helpful with choosing the right spice level. Overall, a very good meal.

It's not that it was bad necessarily, other places nearby are just better in my opinion. We ordered two chicken tikka masalas, garlic naan, and paneer pakora. I was disappointed to see, upon returning home, that they only gave us one side of rice for two orders of chicken tikka. That seemed a little strange to me especially since each order of chicken tikka was almost $20. The sauce had nice flavor but the chicken was tough and didn't fall apart like others I've had in the past. I would've preferred butter chicken but couldn't find it on their menu - maybe I just overlooked it or they have it listed under another name? The paneer pakora was OK, the breading was super thick and not crispy enough. The mint cilantro chutney it came with was unexpectedly spicy. I can handle my spice but I've just never had green chutney have that much of a kick to it. I didn't try the naan but my boyfriend said he's had better.
