As stated by another reviewer, I wish I didn't have to give any stars. My daughters and I ordered 3 sandwiches and 1 order of fries. The sandwiches were average and the amount of fries for $3.75 was disgraceful. My daughter (who was treating) went back up to the counter and asked if this was in fact a full order of fries. What she got back was bad attitude from both the young man (son?) and the owner (who threw 5 more fries into the container). This same young man was rude when he brought the food out to us. No you're welcome, no thank you, nothing, so their lack of any concern shouldn't have come as a surprise. Real kick in the ass here is she tipped 15%. So, to reiterate, the food quality was average. Yes, it's in the middle of no where. And yes, it's damn good. Their menu is loaded with great options but I went with the C.A.T (herb grilled chicken, monterey jack, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and, of course, avocado). Thank you Yelpers, because I would have easily ignored this place, hadn't it been for the consistent reviews. This Lil Take-Out, houses big flavoured grilled sandwiches. It was hard to pick which Melt to try first, for each one was just as tempting as the next. However, my first choice may be my favorite. Inside a golden browned-white bread, there were grilled chicken, arugula and mozzarella, seasoned by pesto sauce - and they called it "Somerset". Satiated and gratified was I, that I know I will go back again, and maybe try Athena or Carnegie, or Shrooms and so on and so forth. What a find! read more

The size of the place should not stop you from coming here. I ordered a sandwich last week for lunch... and it was amazing. Even after eating it 30 mins later (after returning to my office)... it was still good. I tried the grilled chicken with pesto... it had some fresh basil in it, that really made the difference. Looking for places to eat in the area and was drawn to the perfect five-star rating. A shack in a small unpaved parking lot. A few outdoor tables which my wife, 4 year old and 21 month old sat at. I had the stone pony and my wife had the somerset. Both were great. Not the largest sandwiches but just enough. But perfectly toasted and delicious. We were surprised they even had a kids meal with tater tots! Super friendly service. Would have been nice if the sandwiches came with tots or chips as well. Or even a slice of pickle. Here for the first time and boy do not judge a book by its cover. When I first pulled up was going to drive off. Glad I did not. This has to be one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. I had the KC BBQ. It had bbq beef cheese and coleslaw. I can not say one bad thing about this sandwich. It was a moment. I also had tater tots. They were really nice and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside oh so good. I will def be back. Only reason I gave it a four is because of the outside seating needs some work. If I could give 0 stars I would, but it won't let me. Absolutely, disgusting. I was a customer for a long time until the OWNER *admitted* that he served avocado to me that was ROTTEN (see photo below) with the excuse of: "Whats the problem? It won't kill you." You really can't make this up. It's actually pretty funny, but really...that was the owners response to me. This guy is a business owner? This gents name is Rick, who had the audacity to purposely serve avocado that was bad. How about: calling the customer and asking them if they would like to substitute for something else, before throwing it on a sandwich? Nah, too difficult. Instead, let's put rotten avocado on a sandwich and deliver it. At the end of the day: it's not a catastrophic event. However, what makes it appalling is the owners passive aggressive attitude and his attempt at an (inauthentic) apology below this review. In response to the apology: If you can see this Rick: Yes, I want my 50c back. Or, better yet: if you had an ounce of class and salesmanship you would offer an unhappy customer a MEAL instead. I'm just going to throw this out there. Go here. It was easier for me to give American Melts 5 stars, then it was for me to get on 22 West, after getting off of the Summit Ave exit. Oh NJ traffic. zero stars for you! Anyway, I digress. I simply wish I didn't live 22 miles away from this place. I visited American Melts yesterday for the first time, and loved everything about the set up. Do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes on their website, determining what type of grilled cheese you want. Have fun with it. That's part of the GREAT experience. I took hours out of my busy Friday work day, to ensure that I had created in my own mind exactly what I wanted. Using a company post it, I wrote down the ingredients, and then tossed and turned all Friday night in anticipation of this journey. Come Saturday, I arrived at 10:37 a.m, and waited until the Open sign appeared at 11 a.m. My heart was racing. I spoke to the very friendly gentleman who I believe owns this establishment, and eventually read off the grilled cheese sandwich which I was excited to try. This included NY Cheddar, pepper jack, apples, tomato, chicken bacon, and herb aioli on Rye bread. Damn, I just gave away my order to the world. All good. Everything about this sandwich was perfect. Even though the gentleman said he would bring the sandwich to my car (which he did), I decided to sit outside at one of their two tables, and enjoy this glory in 30 degree weather. The sandwich was an absolute game changer. The green apples and tomato were super fresh, the herb aioli was delightful and colorful, the chicken bacon was super flavorful and tender, and the rye bread was grilled perfectly. Not to crispy, and certaintly not underdone. The sandwich was perfection. I totally forgot to investigate what sides they offer, although I did see Tots on the menu. GOSH! Next time I rush back here (which will be in 6 days), I'll make sure I have my next sandwich order prepared. As well, I'm ordering tots, and will probably shove a few of those cripsy critters into the sandwich as well. Get crazy with the tots! This place rocks. Kudos American Melts. I love ya! read more

From what I tasted, the hype is real. Who would've known a small wooden shack in Kenilworth, operated by a father-son team, serves up really good grilled cheese sandwiches? There are three tables outside for you to enjoy your sandwiches at, but the shaded parking spots aren't a bad option either. Stone Pony ($5.90): This sandwich has Monterey Jack, cheddar, roast beef, caramelized onions, and horseradish aioli on country white. Right off the bat, I can definitely say this grilled cheese was stuffed nicely; they did not skimp on the cheese or the tender roast beef. All the ingredients blended well together; I thought the horseradish aioli was perfect for this sandwich. I split the following two with someone else, and thought both were just as delicious: 5-Way ($5.90): The 5-Way is clearly for the purists and cheese lovers; the variety of cheese used is simple, but they taste great together. It has Monterey Jack, cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, provolone, and garlic butter melted together on two slices of country white. Like the Stony Pony, the bread still had a crisp to it. Make sure to eat it while it's still hot, so it doesn't become cold and turn into a solid block of cheese. S'more Please ($4.50): Warm, rich, sweet, and savory all in one bite. Between a sliced glazed donut is mascarpone, graham crackers, melted chocolate, marshmallows, and a couple strips of bacon. It may sound overly sweet, but as someone who isn't too fond of sugary treats, I thought it was great. It's simply--and sinfully--delicious. The grilled cheese creations offered are simple; they are by no means typical, but aren't the absurd combinations you hear about from other places either. At their very core, each grilled cheese sandwich on the menu is just that--a grilled cheese sandwich that may have some meat, some tomatoes, and/or maybe some fruit depending on what you order. If you'd like, you could also customize your own sandwich. Overall, a great grilled cheese at reasonable prices is enough for me to come back and try what else is on the menu. read more

Wow wow wow... When I think of a delicious sandwich, I now think of American Melts. To say it's delicious is actually an understatement, it's straight up food porn. The brilliance starts with the fact that it's a food truck that does car side service. It's located off a Main Street and sits in its own little area with a small parking lot. You walk up to the truck, make your order based on the menu and then they bring it out to your car. And btw, the menu is full of all kinds of deliciousness that will leave you confused on what to order. I had the Carnegie sandwich, which is cheddar, Swiss, French roast turkey, Cole slaw, roasted red peppers and thousand island dressing on rye bread. The first bite says it all... Absolutely amazing. It's the kind of sandwich you see Adam Richmond from Man v Food eat. The bread is toasted, the ingredients mix perfectly and it literally gets better with every bite. I also had an order of the tomato soup which was also delicious. But the real standout was the sandwich. This place is absolute must if you haven't been here. American Melts is in a random parking lot and is a small, unassuming shack. However, the grilled cheeses here are delicious. When we got up to the window, there was a young man and an older gent taking orders. Both very friendly and got your orders out as soon as possible. There is very little seating outside at picnic tables and sadly the day we went, it was just too cold so I had to wait until I got it home to dive in. I got to try the sweet potato chili with quinoa, which was warm and perfect for the cold day. The chicken corn chowder was alright (not as warm as I'd like when I got it home). Next time, I have to try the tomato soup! Main course was the best. I made my own with caramelized onion, brie cheese, and apple on white bread. So good! I did sort of wish it were bigger! Next time, may order two! (I got a big appetite.) I also got to try the Shroom Grilled Cheese, which was packed full of mushrooms and really great. May have liked this more especially since it's more filling and packed more. Definitely will return and highly recommended. Genius move, as they must do a killing during lunch hour with all of the warehouses and office buildings on the street. They offer a long list of gourmet grilled cheese options, including gluten free, or you can invent your own. Personally, I love the 5-Way. What's better than an old school grilled cheese, right? An old school grilled cheese with 5 kinds of cheese. Tomato soup can be order as a "dipper" so you can dunk your sammich right in. Disclaimer: super hot!! Don't let this place fool you! It may look like a little shack in the middle of nowhere, but the grilled cheese sandwiches are amazinggggg! They have a bunch of different sandwiches on the menu, but also have a "build your own" option. I built my own with vegan American cheese, ham, greens, tomatoes and herb aioli, while my husband ordered the Reuben. I'll be the first to admit that vegan cheese is never going to be as good as regular cheese, but in this sandwich I would have never guessed the difference! They put cheese on both sides and a good amount of ham. My husband's sandwich had beautiful, stringy, melty cheese as he separated both halves to unveil all of the pastrami inside. Delicious! It's so random. Less than a minute's drive from Walmart and a great spot to grab lunch. You really can't mess up a grilled cheese. Especially with the assortment of ingredients you have to choose from.
