Octopus All'assasina was a bit chewy, but it was a big piece. For Elote Agnolotti, the filling was all cream. I was hoping for at least bits of kernels. Chile Colorado Rigatoni was tasty. However, both pasta dishes were not hot enough, temperature-wise. The portion in general was on the lighter side. For dessert, we had a seasonal fruit pie (peach or something?) and the Pistachio Horchata Affogato. The affogato was topped with a crispy, churro type of pastry. Both presentation and flavors were great regarding the affogato. The restaurant is tiny. Reservations are a must unless you want to sit at the bar. The chorizo and clams was probably the best thing on the menu. The rigatoni was too al dente and the texture was almost like lentil grained pasta. The flavor was just like chili with pasta in it. The shortened rigatoni was also an interesting choice. The pappardelle was honestly surprising. The pasta was extra thick and had a hint of green in the light. The flavor was exactly like a Shepard's pie but the seasoning of black pepper was perfect. This was the most flavored dish. The garnishes were a joke (micro sized and disproportionate compared the pasta). The endive salad was a special. We just shouldn't have ordered it at all. The parking was street parking. This place is a pure gem! The parking can be tricky but if you go on the earlier side you can get lucky. Highly recommend making reservations in advance. There aren't that many tables inside, it is very tiny but they have a patio in the back with heaters that's perfect. Hostess was great and we were seated right away. The backyard seating expands the capacity, but it's giving pandemic fresco dining with heat lamps and music festival type tent. If you could, sit inside so that atmosphere matches closer to the price that you're paying. The house made pastas are the focus, but the quantities are small; enough for two to share. The flavors a unique and innovated and worth a try once during a special occasion. But my partner left hungry even after paying $100. We ordered two pastas: Elote Agnolotti (25)- we split the street corn filled pasta in half which resulted in 6 to 7 pieces each. The filling was corn-y, but in a great way with every use of lime to cut the saltiness. It was good and unique. Duck Duck Duck (30) this duck linguine with tiny pieces of duck skin was rich. My partner loved this a lot more. Creamy and heavy and a bit more pasta than the elote. There were a few bits of duck meat, but for the price they could have been more generous. The folks next to us complained about cartilage so they got their dessert on the house. They also asked for no cilantro... what an interesting.. um existence. Before you ask, yes they were. Maybe I should have complained that there was corn in my elote pasta to get some free dessert. Speaking of dessert, we ordered the pistachio affogato and PAID 16 for it. Ice cream was simple, the pistachio butter was very interesting. The cookie was mild and the coffee was bitter. It was worth $6 tops. The biggest scam is the credit card surcharge of 3%. Yall cant bake this into your $30 pasta prices? Which they also add tax to which is unethical. We should only be taxed on the food. Not taxed to pay for your credit card machine. Service was nice. We were advised to order a mix of dishes to share. The Aguachile mocktail was a zingy, virgin take on a spicy margarita, highlighted by a sweet and spicy serrrano syrup; the only thing not to like was the $13 price tag. Across the food, our favorite dish was the signature Elote Agnolotti. This ambitious plate took butternut squash ravioli and sprinkled some classic Mexican street food flare. The result: a masterclass in balanced flavor, weighed down only by the awkward, two-bite size of each noodle. We also enjoyed the Aguachile appetizer, which had a salty and sour tang in each bite. We reserved a table through OpenTable for two birthdays. Service was good, the family style food was simple with excellent presentation and had high quality ingredients. Nice music playing in the background. Highlights - the steak, nopal as an ingredient used throughout the dishes, the clams with chorizo (although beans were not cooked fully), and the americano (so frothy and clean after taste). In addition, the customer service was great. When there was a mistake on a dish, the team quickly checked on us and replaced it. We would try the salads again, and would opt out of the huitlacoche pasta, and flour tortillas. Although creative for a dish, we realize we love huitlacoche as a guisado, sautéed and in its whole form in dishes more than blended in pasta. The bread for the table was okay. I heard it was made in house but honestly couldn't tell because of the thin cut and how toasty it was. It would have been nice to taste more of its sourdough flavor and texture. In addition, curious if a gluten free options for pastad and bread, and more vegetarian-friendly proteins for dishes including main dishes might be possible in the future. Posting this review because eating out in LA can be such a scam! We had a great experience here about 3 weeks ago, so we brought our best friends with us to enjoy our special night. However, our recent visit was disappointing. The waitress was rude, uninterested, and dry rushing us to order and responding unfriendly when our friend asked a simple question. After a long wait, we received our food: chorizo clams, sweet potato ceviche, Barbacoa lasagna, and carne asada. My friend's asada was cooked medium rare instead of medium well done. The barbacoa lasagna was too salty and the meat was dry. The other two dishes were good, but our Horchata pistachio drinks were watered down and tasted just like rice water, no pistachio flavor at all. We recommended our friends to ask for light ice and then they brought out a drink that was half the size because we asked for less ice!!! I politely informed the owner about our experience, but he became defensive and insisted that everything was fine. I explained that I wanted the lasagna removed from our bill since we didn't eat it. He agreed and offered dessert, but our overall experience was tainted. A lady later admitted that their cook was sick and they were behind, which was the issue with the food quality. TLDR: My partner and I are working our way through all the restaurants in the Red Dining Book, and this one is unfortunately the only one that didn't blow us away. While the food was really enjoyable, although a mixed bag, the service and time it took to get our food was not good. ------- After being seated we didn't have to wait long to give our order and the first item, the Sweet Potato Ceviche, came out pretty quickly. After that, it was a bit of a wait for the Elote Agnolotti. Both of those items were flavorful and well presented, the ceviche was absolutely the highlight, but the service took a nosedive after that. It was at least 30 more minutes after we finished both of those plates until our Lobster Pappardelle came out, and when it did it the lobster was chewy. While the flavor was there, it seemed it might have seen siting there awhile. We also had to ask for our water to be replaced twice because it had been empty for almost half the time we were there. It took about another 20 minutes to order dessert after finishing the pasta, which was another mixed bag. The tiramisu was incredible, but the horchata pistachio affogato was just okay and missing the pistachio flavor. When we finally got the check, there was an issue with them checking the book and the total (Red Dining Book gets your cheapest entree waived or $30 off, whichever is less), they had to refund us and recharge us. In all, we were there for 2 hours because it was so long between dishes. It was quite frustrating because many tables had been sat, served, and paid in the time we sat there and waited for our second plate. read more

This was my first time here, and I tried both the burrito and the chilaquiles. The chilaquiles had an amazing texture instead of tortillas, they used deep-fried pasta, which gave it a soft yet crunchy bite. I added carnitas and habanero sauce for an extra kick. The dish itself isn't very spicy, but it's incredibly flavorful, with a nice balance of sweetness and savory notes. The burrito, however, didn't have as much flavor. Amiga Amore is a really unique Mexican and Italian fusion restaurant in the Highland Park area slightly north east of DTLA. It feels like you're eating inside someone's home so it really gives off a comfortable atmosphere and you can tell that it is most likely a neighborhood gem. Our server was very polite and everything that we ordered arrived fairly quickly. We were able to find a street parking spot right out front of the restaurant for our 8 PM dinner. The price is very fair and I felt the portion sizes were generous. The menu is pretty small, but it has some very unique items on it. Everything has a mix of Mexican and Italian ingredients and even though all the flavors and ingredients are recognizable, the combination of them is very unique. I really applaud the idea of this place and overall I thought it was pretty good although some of the dishes had some minor issues. The first item that I ordered was the Sweet Potato Ceviche, and I thought this was pretty good. It was unique in that it is a vegetarian ceviche and the Tigers Milk really added a unique flavor to it. It was a decent sized portion so it would be easy to share this. Next came the Citrus Endive Salad, which was a special for the day. I especially liked the Chamoy sorbet with it and I thought it was a really great light summer salad. I chose the Ossobuco for my entrée and thought it was pretty good. Some of the pieces had a considerable amount of fat on it which I had to cut off and I wish the bone marrow would've been more substantial, but overall, I really enjoyed it. One of the other diners at my table got the Pork Belly Al Pastor and he was not a fan of it. The Al Pastor seasoning was not very pronounced, and the belly was extremely fatty, almost overly so. Aguachile: absolutely fantastic. Refreshing, delicious, and light but still so flavorful. Definitely a step up from whatever other aguachile you have had before and you can really tell the flavors are curated so carefully. 2. Clams and chorizo: my favorite dish of the meal, I could not believe how nourishing the broth was and at some point I had to slow myself down because the clams were just dropping like flies lmaooo. But I could feel the attention to detail with the small cubes of different ingredients cut so uniformly. It's a fine dining level of excellence. 3. The pastas. We got the elote pasta and also the duck duck duck. Honestly they disappeared so fast because we just could not get enough. The portions are decent, make no mistake, but we were absolutely amazed by the texture of the pasta, the balance of different flavor combinations, and how nothing was too overpowering or heavy as you might expect with duck, pasta, cheese, etc. I love the tiny corn cobs in the elote pasta! It was adorable and rounded out the flavor in an unexpected way. 4. The pork belly al pastor--wow the crackling pork and sweet pineapple went directly onto the tortillas for a cute makeshift taco. What a great find! Foodie friends brought us to this unassuming place that hides Michelin-quality cuisine. The creative Italian Mex mix of styles works to great effect. Each dish had unique, complex flavors. Our favorite was the Elote Agnolotti, with the street corn filling with its wonderful creamy texture. The Duck Duck Duck was amazing-- linguini with Mary's duck, duck gravy, and crispy skin. The Aguachile with seabass featured many layers of flavor. They have an eclectic menu of wines, beers, and cocktails, including Italian varietals. Our server were charming and the whole experience lingered pleasantly long after we left. Second time here and yes it is that good. Had to go with my zucchini bread with the salsa macha is just mmm mmm, really good. The aguachile was different this time, slices of tuna with a strawberry sauce and chucks of strawberries. SOOO GOOD and refreshing! Asada was delicious and tender. Presentation was really nice. Affogato wow. it's basically espresso shot with a scoop of horchata ice cream, pairs with a cookie type thing that reminds me of a churro. WOW Service was great as usual. read more

This place deserves every single star of 5. The food was absolutely incredible and service and atmosphere were lovely as well. Don't let the unassuming small storefront fool you. It's without question one of the best restaurants in Highland Park. There is street parking and an expansive back patio with heaters and blankets that allows dogs. I went here a couple times for brunch and then dinner with a group and tried all of the vegetarian options and they were just awesome. Not a single complaint about the food. Everything was seasoned incredibly. I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of the flavors in a lot of the dishes and how beautifully cooked and portioned every aspect of the dishes were. I hesitated to come here because I didn't want to be disappointed after reading some not good reviews. But I honestly don't understand how anyone could give this place anything but love after eating here. The meat eaters in the group were blown away by their meat options as well... The food is clearly crafted with love and designed by someone with great taste. Also their drinks are insanely good! It's not cheap but you are getting what you pay for here unlike the plethora of mediocre restaurants in LA with the same price point. read more

Amazingly delicious little hole in the wall breakfast/brunch spot. Very casual ambiance. We didn't have a reservation (3 in our party) but were able to be seated immediately. We also showed up at about 10AM on a Sunday. Service was excellent and our servers were warm and personable. Food was also really good. Would recommend for those looking for a relaxed chill breakfast spot on a lazy Sunday morning. The dining room isn't very big, with space for about 20 people. I feel bad for giving a low review but the food was just not it for me. It could be bc I prefer savory over sweet. But for the price, the quality, and the hassle of parking, I'm gonna give it a 1. Drink: I got the Mexitalian Soda. No complaints. Just tasted like a fruity soda. Zucchini Bread: It tasted fine. But $9 for zucchini bread and salsa? (Also, weird combo) I don't think it was worth it. Aguachile: again, I prefer savory foods so strawberry sauce paired with raw fish was not for me. They add edible flowers on top and say to pair it with blue corn tortilla. Everything together just tasted odd. Elote Agnolotti: This was better! You can really taste the corn. Still too sweet for my liking tho. The pasta was a bit tough for me so I don't think it was cooked properly. And again with the edible flowers... it just feels unnecessary. Duck Duck Duck: Getting better again. The Duck was good and the sauce was good. My only negative point is that it was wayyyy too salty. Pork Chop Milanese: finally something that tastes like an actual, normal meal. The salad on top was very flavorful. The green sauce in the side was good. The pork chop was just a regular pork chop but it was substantial and seasoned well. I think bc everything else fell flat for me, this at the end was so pleasant. Parking: street parking is available but kinda hard to find. I like to eat but I wouldn't say I'm a foodie or an adventurous eater. If you are that person, u might enjoy it here!
