I've gotten take out tofu pad thai from here for lunch 2 times now. It's the best pad thai I've had in this area. They put an ample amount of well-cooked tofu in too, which isn't usually the case. The lunch sized portion is quite large. Highly recommend if you're looking for inexpensive, traditional thai. We tried their tom yum soup, beef drunken noodles, shrimp kaprow with rice - they were all excellent. Their drunken noodles are the best I've tried in Maryland. There are two Amina Thai restaurants in the area - one in Rockville and one in Silver Spring. This review is for the Rockville location, near Far East (dim sum). Amina Thai (Rockville) sits in a plaza with just enough parking for patrons. While there aren't that many tables inside the restaurant, when I was there around 6pm on a Monday, there were 3 other occupied tables - a good sign. I ordered the beef pad kee mao (drunken noodles) and chicken pad thai, as noodles are one of the reasons I exist, go to the gym and stay alive for as long as possible. Immediately I can tell both dishes are on the greasy side, as the bottom of the bag was padded with grease-soaked napkins. Did I mention the portion size? They are definitely on the ample side, though you do pay a bit more for dinner pricing, so it evens out. The pad kee mao was flavored well while the beef (halal) was a tick better than what you get at typical Thai/Chinese restaurants. The chicken pad thai was also just as greasy, even though the grease hides a lot better with thin noodles. Another reason why I know both dishes have tons of grease: after 2 hours, both dishes turned into blocks of grease noodles. It's gross when you think about it, but it's delicious if you ignore it, nuke it in the microwave for 2 min and continue eating. Overall I thought the noodles flavor were a hair better than your typical Thai restaurants in the area, plus the portion size will definitely prompt you to have leftovers. While I wouldn't drive out of my way back to Amina Thai, but if I was in the Rockville area and craved Thai, I'd come back and tell the wonderful mama who manages the restaurant: easy on the grease kun mae! read more

I am so happy to have found this place. Even though the ladies who own and work are Indonesian, they make excellent thai food. I love most of the dishes here - Pad See Ew, Drunken noodles, Penang Curry, Drunken Lo Mein, Red Curry, Greem Curry, Massaman Curry. They are slightly higher priced than the average Thai restaurant but absolutely worth it. The food tastes like homemade cooking which makes it even more special. The dining area is small but clean. I've only sat down to eat her once, but have gotten delivery here several times and have never been disappointed. I highly recommend the green curry, the red curry and the penang curry. Oh yum. The Shrimp Tom-Yum soup is really good too, except I don't like those hard vegetable things they put in there. I don't know what they are, but other Thai places use them too, so it must be standard. Just fish those out and you'll be good to go. The parking here is really obnoxious, through no fault of their own, so I do really recommend the delivery option. The ambiance of the restaurant is OK, but you'd be better off busting out the table cloth and some candles in your dining room or setting up the TV dinner tables while your favorite show is on TV in the living room. read more

I'd never seen/heard of a Halal Thai place in this area so I'm pretty happy I found this place. This place was pretty good; food was a bit on the greasy side and portions are pretty big. It was hard to find this place since it's tucked away fromt the main road. Once you do find it, it's nice and cozy inside - probably about 8 tables and a register counter. Service here is also pretty fast. My friend and I ordered the Tofu Tod, Pad See Ew, and Pad Kaprow. - Tofu Tod: This was by far the biggest plate of fried tofu I have ever been served in a thai restaurant. There was just a mound of tofu on our table with a sweet peanut sauce. It was good - thought the sauce was a bit on the sweet side. - Pad See Ew: At most thai places, one of the things I whine about is the lack of wide noodles in this dish. But not here! There were so much wide noodles, I wish there was more veggies. It was yummy and spicy (and HUGE). - Pad Kaprow: Out of all three dishes, I liked this one the best. The sauce was very flavorful and the chicken was so tender. I really recommend this dish if you're looking for a saucy spicy dish that's not curry. I also ordered a cup of Thai Iced Coffee. I stumbled upon this place with my buddies after a brewery excursion and it was awesome. Portions were huge and taste was on point. I always get the Pad See Eaw and they made it really well here. I had such a tough time ordering from Amina's because everything sounded so delicious. BP and I ended up carrying out since my parents were visiting for Father's Day. We love that this place offers Halal Thai food and it's so good! The food was pretty spicy and with some dishes, I thought it was overwhelmingly hot. We ordered both Chicken and Beef Pad Kee Mao, Chicken Lad Na, Bangkok Shrimp Delight, and Thai Fried Rice. The food traveled well and was still warm when it got to the house. The portions weren't as generous as i would have thought because I felt the prices were higher than usual. Normally, I would have ordered Thai at the restaurant within walking distance from the house, but for Halal I was will to pay the premium. We spent $70 on the food, which I thought was too much since it did not even include drinks (BP still tipped, though). When BP went to pick up the food he said the service was great and the owner (Amina , herself, I am sure) was very sweet. i think we would go to Amina's again, but probably just when my parents are in town. read more

If you're looking for a hole in the wall with charm, this place definitely has it. It exudes that small neighborhood vibe more than any Thai restauraunt I've seen in the area, probably because of the mix of its small size (I can't imagine more than 25 or so people in here at any one time) and Amina and her family working the dining room. It's a plus, but you pay on the convenience of parking. I came to pick up my to go order when they were locking up, and even then there were no more than 4 or 5 open spots out front. Now, for what really matters: the food. Entree number one was the pad thai. I have to try it everywhere to compare, and Amina scores high on my list in this regard. Good portion, packed with that sweet paprika flavor you want from pad thai, and a healthy amount of sprouts on the side. So many Thai restaurants serve flavorless noodles with some sprouts and call it pad thai, so I was really happy with what Amina has to offer here. The one oddity is that it was served with a lemon, rather than a lime. We were unsure of how important this would be, so we tested it on a small portion of pad thai on the side. We were surprised by how big a difference there was between these two citruses. Rather than enhance the flavors, the lemon made it oddly sour and definitely detracted. I would advise either asking for a lime or discarding the lemon altogether. Entree number two was the panang curry. I'm a big panang fan, so I was anxiously awaiting this one. Overall, I enjoyed it. It had that nice creamy texture that soaks into the rice so well, and the chicken was moist and plentiful. There's not much in a panang other than the meat (there's a little red pepper and kaifer leaves), so I can't stress the importance of good portions enough when it comes to meat in panang. I was happy with what we got. We also ordered fried rice je. This is a basic veggie fried rice with fried tofu. The flavor on the rice was good, but the tofu was as bland as can be. I realize tofu is often bland, but I've had flavorful and delicious tofu at enough thai places to know that a skilled chef can infuse plenty of flavor into it without sacrificing its vegan nature. I had high hopes, but it became a chore to eat without soaking it in panang sauce. As I mentioned, we ordered to go, and I'm happy to add that all the dishes held up great in the fridge. I finished them off 24 hours after ordering, and they all still tasted fresh. Had me craving more. Final note - they were very stingy with the white rice portion. I'm not sure if this was because we ordered fried rice, and they felt we didn't need more, or if this is standard, but it was a tiny cup of rice by any measure. When it was needed to soak up panang sauce, the tininess was even more exaggerated. A small quibble for a great Thai experience, though. read more

We live in the neighborhood and stopped in for an early dinner after not having been there for a while. Severely disappointed. The better dishes were just OK. Not many interesting flavors. The worst was the chicken satay, the worst I have had in my llife! The restaurant should be ashamed to have served this. It was evident that they used a frozen premade pressed "chicken" that was hard, rubbery, and tasted like nasty freezer burn. If you don't have time to make this properly take it off the menu. I ate here with my family one evening. It is in an off-the-beaten-path location, about 1/2 mile east of Rockville Pike on Nicholson Lane, not a street that most people use, behind White Flint mall. For locals, however, this is a commonly used shortcut. I wouldn't expect to find a fine dining experience here. The service was excellent. There is no alcohol served here, possibly for religious reasons. I enjoy having a Thai beer (Singha or Chang) with my Thai food, so the lack of alcohol would definitely deter me from returning. Well I like the food and they really are nice. I mean overall that part is 5 stars but it's like some aspects of the place that makes me wonder why I come back. I started going to the silver spring location as it's closer to me but anyhow... I believe in tipping hands down. I'm a 20% kind of ripper but they impose a 15% tip if you have 3 or more people. It was me and two children. But anyhow doesn't matter their age but that they insist on imposing a tip for 3 people... I mean I would've given more but once they made it mandatory I was like nah forget that. Years ago I remember they kind of hovered when my kids were really little and worried about their dishes and the kids activities and it's just like why? This is the best Thai food in and around Rockville Period!!! The Thai food I have had here is unlike any other place. The host is a fantastic, amicable guy and he makes sure the customers are comfortable and enjoy their food to the fullest. His recommendations are great too. Try the Kaprow fried rice, Pad Thai, drunker noodles, Thai basil fried rice, any Thai curry, the Thai ice tea (these are the items I have tried and they are delicious).
