This is another Williamsburg gem! Very nice atmosphere, clean, professional, all that good stuff on top of great food earns Amiraj 5 stars. This place is a relative newcomer in town, but they are already getting a loyal following. The space is surprisingly nice and includes many seating options. The menu is robust but not overwhelming. The servers and manager are happy to make recommendations, and thus far, they have been on point for me. The food is wonderful. Everything is cooked well, served hot, and presented nicely. The prices are a average to somewhat high for the area. The cauliflower appetizer is probably the best we have had. Pictures here are two types of chicken dishes, but my American brain won't regain the name. Just know they were both good. read more

We had Palak paneer and chicken tikka masala, level 3 which was a decent amount of spice. We had could have gone up a notch in spice but it was still so good! I came here after reading some good reviews on Yelp and I was incredibly happy! There is ample parking and the decor is new age and fun. The staff is friendly and on top of things. The food is AMAZING. It may just be the best Indian food I've had in the US. The bindi (okra) dish was perfect. The cauliflower appetizer was crunchy and tasty and the sauce was delicious. My mom got the chicken curry and she was also very happy. They have rotating desserts. We got the mango lime cheesecake and it was also scrumptious. Lastly for the drinks, I'm pregnant so got the mango rose mocktail and it hit the spot. My mom got a cosmo and she said it was very well made. My dad got a mango lasse which was delicious. Just a warning... they are serious about the spices. They ask you if you want 1-5. If you don't like spicy, get 1 bc even the 2 had some heat for my mom. I got 3 (being conservative bc I usually like very spicy) and I could barely hang. This was so good it ended up being my official birthday dinner. Waitress was extremely knowledgeable and patient as we had many questions and requests. They were out of the beer my husband asked for but found an Indian IPA that suited him. My drink was a little too strong and sweet for me, and she suggested more ice and I requested some fresh lime, which remedied the situation. I asked for papadum ( lentil flour crackers ) with two dipping sauces, green mint and onion and tomato, which came out before we even finished ordering. Lots of vegan and gluten free items on menu. I got curried goat, and my husband got the lamb shank. Both were delicious and piping hot. Also could order your level of spiciness from 1-5, with wonderful long grain rice. Also got a trio of sauces more of the onion, which was fine with me since it was delicious, raita and mango chutney. My husband got garlic naan, also delicious and hot from the oven. Since we were celebrating my birthday I went for the gluten free chocolate chili ginger cake. Death by chocolate! My first visit, and there will be more. It's a beautiful, relaxing space, all the more so for being tucked in a strip mall near Ace Hardware and Earth Fare grocery. The lunch menu served between 11:30 and 2:30 pm includes soup or salad and golden fluffy naan with your entrée. I enjoyed the Gobhi Manchurian (cauliflower in a soy tomato glaze, cooked just tender-crisp) and the Goan seafood curry served with rice. I ordered spice level 4 which was mouth tingling and sinus clearing but didn't overwhelm the coconut based sauce. It included a scallop, two large shrimp and several pieces of fish. To finish I had their homemade pistachio kulfi ( ice cream ) and I also ordered the rosewater lime "mocktail" which I plan to replicate at home. Service was attentive and friendly. Vegetarian options are plentiful. For Williamsburg visitors it's a nice change from the regional flavors menu offered by several other restaurants in our area. read more

A must try! -- Currently on vacation and someone recommended we try Amiraj. And I'm so glad we did, the service and food were amazing. We have two little ones and our server recommended some great choices for them, back home we typically stick to ordering butter chicken for the, but wanted them to try something different. Our sever recommended the Malai Kabob and the Butter Chicken Kulcha for them, our oldest daughter is picky and loved them both. Me and my husband ordered the Chaat of the day for an appetizer and then I ordered the Peshawari Lamb Shank and he got the Crab-Scallop Nilgiri - both amazing recommendations from our server. They also make your food to your preferred spice level, which is great. I like a little spice but nothing too overpowering so a level 2 was good for me and my husband asked for a level 3. The food was very good and the portions were nicely sized. The highlights were the lamb lucknowi shahi, the chicken tiki masala, the garlic naan and the best onion chutney I have ever had. The lowlights: I had to pay extra to get the chutney (both tamarind and onion), the chicken in the butter chicken dish was not tandoori and the naan was not buttered. Bar is located in the back of business in the right corner . My first time trying Indian cuisine. I got the goat lunch, with rice, house salad and naan bread. The samosas were insanely good, with craisins and potato. The chicken soup was phenomenal. The butter chicken naan is also amazing. Don't get the butter chicken, get the butter chicken naan. It's cheaper and frankly, the same dish in between two pieces of naan. Great Appetizer. The crab and scallop nilgiri is the number 1 Indian dish I've had. The scallops were cooked well, and the crab acts as a really good vehicle for the flavors. Definitely try it. The lamb vindaloo was the spiciest thing on this earth. When you get a spicy dish here, get a 1 if it is not yogurt or dairy based. The flavors will be fine with a 1. Trust me! The mango cheesecake was a great dessert. So this used to be Nawab and we dined there once under the old name. The name, atmosphere and food presentation have all changed, but from my understanding, still same ownership. They have clearly invested in this place and it shows! Beautiful dining room with a chic modern and comfortable design. Very friendly staff and great service! I'm a strict vegetarian and had asked a question about an appetizer that used to be on the menu, but we didn't see it on the new menu... I had to describe it because I didn't remember the name. The waiter knew exactly what I was talking about and said they still had it (battered and fried veggie assorted platter). If you just describe that to them, they will know what you want. Very good and large portion! Served with a couple staple sauces. A different waiter came over to the table to deliver our drinks... super friendly and joked with us when we saw a Mango Lassi drink on his tray and commented how good they were... he smiled and said, they're good, but you don't want the calories. He commented and said that the Indian beer I ordered was very good and a great choice (Taj Mahal).. he was absolutely correct. Very good! Comparable to a Bud Light with a little extra hop. My husband and I decided to split two meals so we could try a couple things. We ordered the Vegetable Biryani and Chana Masala and an order of the potato and veggie stuffed Naan. The waiter even made sure to ask if a little butter and milk were ok to have in the meal since I had made mention of being a strict vegetarian. Brownie points for remembering that AND caring enough to ask when we placed the order! Food was beautifully presented and a large portion of everything! Flavorful and delicious! You can tell everything is made fresh and quality ingredients go into their food. A different waiter delivered our food to the table and smiled asking if he could get us anything else... we asked for a little more water and he was more than happy to refill our drinks while he was there delivering food. This is a staff where everyone pitches in and does whatever role needs to be done for the guests. To finish off the meal, our original waiter came over with a surprise dessert for my birthday that he happened to notice when he checked my ID for the beer. It was some sort of raspberry sorbet with a fruit jam topping and drizzled with a white chocolate cream sauce... so so good! An excellent finish to an already wonderful dinner and dining experience. No No! What happened to this place? My husband and I love Indian food and have traveled the world eating at different Indian restaurants. When we moved here eight years ago we found this gem Nawab which now is Amiraj. This was our go to dinner when Our family from New York came to town,it was our date night, birthday, dinner and our favorite place. Well goes the bad news.. We ordered this Valentine's Day, we thought it was the same with just a new name but it's Not! The food has changed and not for the good. I could taste the butter and it had no spice. Blah The garlic nan was overly garlicky. It had no taste and was not even worth finishing. I'm so unhappy, they raised the price and no have bad food. I called my New York family and they are just as disappointed as we are. I know they have another location in Newport News and I wonder if they stayed true to Indian food?
