This restaurant benefitted from its great location and being the few asian resaurants around, it was full house most of the night. We had a birthday dinner for a friend there were probably 12-14 of us. They were very obliging in providing seating for the incoming guests. The servers were prompt and fast with service. We shared a papaya salad which looked like it was jicama and it was much thicker cut than the usual. Did they think people wouldnt be able to tell papaya from jicama? My friend's softshell crab was deep fried and served with a sweet and hot sauce. My seafood special was a bed of mussels, scallops, shrimps and squids. They were fresh and made very very spicy as requested. Overall, it had a good atmosphere and it's amazing how crowded it was. read more

This place gets spicy just right. Usually I'm a red or yellow curry fan at Thai restaurants, but I wanted to try something different this time around and Bird in a Nest fit the bill. Crispy kale makes the nest (yum!) and the bird is chicken in a chili sauce. Of course I was warned by the waitress that it was spicy, and I told her it's OK make it hot! This is always a risk at Thai restaurants. Sometimes they don't believe the white girl likes spicy and they still make it mild (which really irks me) and other times they make it so hot that it's inedible (rarely though.) Thai Tanic was a hail mary pass of desperation. Here we were, dumb tourists, feet aching, cranky baby in tow, trying to eat at The Pig, only to be told "Yeah, that'll be 45 minutes" when faced with a seemingly half-empty dining room. Uh-huh. I've got your "forty-five minutes" right here. In my pants. Next to my testicles. (The "minutes" are my penis.) Anyway, we promptly strode across the street and hit up Thai Tanic. Granted, I tend to view skeptically any business with a pun in their name, but as I said, desperation. However, this trip turned out all right. The menu is more ambitious than most hole-in-the-wall Thai joints. Sure, there are your standards, your curries of many colors, your basil stir fries. But there were a few other attempts to up the game. For example, I ordered the bird's nest dish. Now that's probably not the actual name, but I was tired and this was about a month ago so shut up. No, YOU shut up! Gah. Oh and they're not actual birds' nests either. What we had here were some julienned potatoes twisted up in the shape of a bird's nest and fried served atop a stir-fried chicken in a garlic/chili sauce. "Spicy!" I was warned. Yes, it was spicy, but not overly so. (Note: I love me some heat, so you civilians be forewarned.) About halfway through the meal, it became a little one note, but the "nests" gave a nice textural contrast. The drinks, though, were spot on and reasonably priced which was good considering, in light of the day of heavy touristing we'd had, I ordered several. My wife's drunken noodles were, if not life-affirming, were good. Finally, they had a high-seat for the munchkin. I wouldn't go so far as call Thai Tanic the best Thai in the world but they still managed to catch my hail mary pass. I'll take my 3.5 stars and round up. read more

Well I always shunned this place because of their stupid name. Who the hell names an Asian restaurant after a European ship disaster, one of the worst ever. Yeah, I'm really hungry for Thai thinking about all those frozen dead bodies in the Atlantic! YUM! Well after missing our reservations at Rice by an hour and a half (don't ask) and seeing that we would have to wait around 45 minutes we decided to try this place. The wait was shorter, so we went for it. First, I was surprised to see this a like a local Bear hangout. Where did they all come from! Not bad, I was with a group of my gay friends, so we fit right in. The restaurant was more colorful but less chic than Rice. 5 stars for the blow fish light fixtures! Those were awesome! The food was really really good. Not quite as amazing as Rice, I have to say...but close enough. I got my regular Pad See Eew, and it was really great. I have been a Logan Circle homeowner and regular Thai Tanic customer for five years -- ending tonight. My meal tonight was absolutely appalling. From the dishes to the service, I was shocked to see how the portions, recipes, and service has changed. I used to recommend this establishment as one of the best and most overlooked in what has become a trendy "14th street corridor" or "mid city district," but will counsel against it in the future. It appeared that they had downsized portions to match newer trendy restaurants in the neighborhood, but how can you offer faithful customers of 5 and 10 years half the quantity for the same price? Even worse, the quality of the dishes had decreased considerably; one of the things that always drew me to Thai Tanic pad thai were the generous rations of vegetable and meat in the dish at this restaurant. No more digging through greasy piles of noodles to find a meager chicken or vegetable morsel. These cuts were hearty white meat and lots of egg and greens. Tonight's version fell far short, with what appeared to be half portion incarnations of the dish's prior self, comprised mainly of over peppered noodles, not protein or vegetable matter. Our appetizers included a minced chicken dish so over-seasoned with lemongrass and another element that it was almost inedible. The tomatoes in my simple chicken salad were spoiled. The only item I'd recommend would be the shrimp cakes, which were excellent. With unevenness of this sort, I'd rather try out new venues. One goes to an old staple for consistency with favorites. Clearly, our classic Thai Tanic has sunk. read more

I used to love Thai Tanic immensely. I live around the corner and it was my go-to place. I would go once a week easily. I would take every houseguest there for dinner after I told them how great the food was in spite of them playing that horrible Celine Dion Titanic theme song in a loop. (And then when we got there... surprise! No Celine Dion! Just great food.) But Thai Tanic started adding fish sauce to just about every dish. And they apparently can't leave it out because it is premixed into the sauces or whatever. Now, there are so few vegetarian options (fish and fish sauce are not vegetarian, obviously) that I rarely go to Titanic. The name had already convinced the partner that we would eat here, while I remained skeptical as we walked up the shoddy restaurant front. I displayed reluctance, but the partner was not budging and ushered me in before I could wallow in my disappointment. As soon I pushed the door, I was immediately hit by the completely contrasting interior. The design is modern and the atmosphere lively. Most notable of my stimulus intake was the sheer number of people they had packed into the rather small restaurant - the tables were all set within half a foot of each other AND packed with delightfully attractive men on dates...with each other. I was sold! Gay men in DC have the best taste in food. Needless to say - the dishes did not disappoint. In fact, I'd even venture to say that it's the best Thai that I've had in DC. And when I say best, I mean the most authentic. This is the first and only place in the states that I've seen this type of small seeded vegetable, which comes standard in red curries served in Thailand. I deducted a star because our red curry dish was relatively mild, but had advertised as very spicy - I think that's a bad move, and a possible first step on the road to becoming a Tara Thai. We weren't particularly adventuresome on this outing, just red curry chicken and tom ka goong. The soup was odd, almost completely white and much more coconut milk than I'm used to. First impression: What a creative name, hilarious! Ambiance: They are going for the contemporary look- lots of shine and red. Personally, it looks tacky. Food: "Hoi Jor"- crabmeat, shrimp, minced chicken, with herbs wrapped in a bean curd with plum sauce. Wow, surprisingly DELICIOUS. "Pad See Eew" with beef ($10.95) BEST pad see eew ever! It was full of that Thai flavor, but it was so sweet too. I licked my fork clean. "Gaeng Par Ped" ($11.95)- sliced boneless roasted duck in red curry paste with bell peppers, Thai eggplant, string beans, and basil leaves One thing- there were bones. Another thing, when it came out it did not look that appetizing. They need to work on their presentation skill. Ya gotta love the cheesy Thai restaurant names in DC. I can't decide which I like better: Thaiphoon or Thai Tanic. And what would I call the next one if it were up to me? Maybe "Oops, Thai-po!" for the writer (uh, and Britney fan) in me, or "All Thai'ed Up" if I'm feeling extra busy (or a little naughty). Thai Tanic isn't the cutest place, nor is it comfortable in that hole-in-the-wall way, but they do have really good food and friendly service. We had the chicken kra-pow and green curry; both were excellent. I noticed a lot of lady-boys (that's what they call 'em in Thailand) among the waitstaff, and many of the patrons were gay men. Thus, this may not be the best place to bring homophobic friends. Actually, maybe this would be a great place to bring those people to get them over their issues. But that's a whole other story. Thai Tanic is one of the few restaurants in Logan Circle that has survived the gentrifying movement on 14th Street. Surrounded by brand new establishments, Thai Tanic has held its ground because of its strong support of the local community and its solid dining fare. Thai Tanic has been in the same location since March of 2001 and has since even opened a second restaurant in Columbia Heights. In all this time, I had overlooked Thai Tanic, but am now proud to say I have finally dined there. In a generic neon red font, you can see the name of the restaurant from afar. Underneath "Adventures of Thai Cuisine" is also illuminated in neon, making this restaurant look quite divey. Inside, I was surprised to find a bustling scene. Despite the location in the midst of all the nice, new restaurants, this restaurant clearly has a solid following. Me and my friend took a seat at a table very close to the bar. Thai Tanic has been a long-time supporter of the gay community in DC and always proudly displays the rainbow flag during Gay Pride week as the gay community represents a large portion of its patrons and employees. I started off with a Big Ginger drink made with Domain de Canton liqueur, fresh lime juice and a dash of bitters. Unfortunately, I found out pretty quickly that drinks are not their strong point as this drink was pretty watered down. And for a $10 drink, that was disappointing. Inside, iridescent tables are complemented with sparkly red dining chairs and red and blue walls. Mirrors, Thai elephants, and Buddhas adorn the dining room while red and white lights shine down. There are 4 vegetarian appetizers in their own section on the menu. My friend recommended we try the Papaya Salad Jae and I'm glad we did. The shredded green papaya was mixed with tomatoes and string beans in a spicy lime dressing. It was so much better tasting than it sounded. For my entree, I ordered the Gang Pak -- extra spicy. This was a delicious vegetable dish loaded with carrots, cabbage, squash, snow peas, broccoli, and tofu in a red curry with sweet basil leaves. I specified no fish sauce just in case. I also love that they offer brown rice as an option. My friend ordered the Tao Huw Pad Tua Ngorg, which was stir-fried bean sprouts, fried tofu, mushrooms, spring onions, red peppers, and green peppers in a garlic soy sauce. I also ordered a Mango Cosmo and asked them to make it stronger -- this was a great improvement over the last drink! All in all, I was pretty happy with the food. But, the drinks and service were so-so. At one point, I had to flag down our waitress to get more water as she barely checked on us at all. The entrees were $11.50 each so not cheap, but not overly expensive either. And it was a very casual low-key environment, no reservations needed. Best pannang curry I've had in DC. My go to carry out Thai place. Quick service and reasonable turn around, can't go wrong.

A word of warning, when the menu says "spicy," they mean it. I am not a wuss when it comes to spicy. I do believe that spice IS the spice of life. However I had the misfortune of ordering two things that were spicy and drinking multiple glasses of water and Chang beer is not cool. You end up making many pit stops for the remainder of your night. However, any noodle dish is highly recommended. It's hard to describe, but a lot of the stir fried dishes (like the noodles) have what we Cantonese people call "wok hay.". Wok hay is not unlike the saying that the best soups come from old pots. This place has wok hay. Other places can use the same proportion of ingredients, but this place has a little extra something to make it stand out. But seriously, watch out on the spicy. I wish this place had the option to tell the server how spicy you like things. read more

We came here for a quick bite to eat before hitting up Georgetown! I would rate this place a solid 3.5. We were actually looking for another Thai Tanic but apparently there's two in the area! So if you're meeting up with friends, make sure you specify which one O_o Whenever I go to thai restaurants, I always go for their thai fried rice and their Tom Yum Goong (soup with lemongrass broth). Tom Yum Goong normally comes with veggies, mushrooms, and shrimp. Sooo I ordered just that - beef thai fried rice and the soup. I really enjoyed both. Just something about thai fried rice that tastes so different from regular fried rice. I feel like it has more flavor, best way to explain it. Or I'm just weird. For the soup, the shrimp was cooked just right and the broth wasn't too lemony where I was squinting as I slurped it; it was juuuuust right. My friend ordered their appetizer as her entree since she wasn't super hungry - Angel Wings. Pretty much seasoned and stuffed de-boned chicken wings. It was pretty good! You dip it in the sweet chili sauce and it filled her up just right. My two other friends ordered chicken and beef pad thai. It tasted typical to me, nothing too special. I've had take-out from here twice and it was pretty good! I had the crazy noodles and the red curry, but let me tell you the 2 chilies marking is SPICY. My only complaint really is that the portion sizes aren't very big by standard thai standards. Granted, I live right around the corner, but it is not just convenience, it is actually tasty.I have to admit that I almost exclusively get the Veggie Pad Thai - but I am a very satisfied customer. I have brought many a visiting guest to eat here and everyone has enjoyed it... I have heard great things about the Panang. Also, they have fruity drinks, which is not uncommon I guess, but is still fun sometimes. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is nice. Cheesy name, great Thai food. I had the Tom Yum chicken soup and the Beef Nam Tok (beef salad) while my wife had the chicken Pad Thai. All dishes were very flavorful and satisfying! The beef salad had a spicy kick to it that really made me smile. Not bad for what looked like a hole-in-the-wall from outside. This was the first Thai resturant that I have ever been to. I was a bit nervous at first because I didn't know what I was going to expect. The first time I went here, I ordereed a Yum Nai(?) and it was like a party in my mouth. Man oh man it was good, with there added spices to the mix it was great. Ever since that experience I have always been back. The servers were nice, patient and they were all generous and explained me what where in my meal. Also it has a great atsmopshere, it's a place that I do go often to again and again. The only Con I can think of is that the tables are kinda close to each other so if someone you didn't know sat next to you, they could reach over and grab your food or listen in on your conversation. I have had great experiences here earlier (and regret not writing a review then), but this is for my experience today with delivery. I eat thai food about once every two weeks. I have never, ever, received a curry that was such a small portion. It was like...ten tablespoons of curry with a piece of fish. All in all I ordered $40 of Thai food, assuming it would be for me, another family member, and possibly leftovers. I have just about eaten all $40 of the food on my own. The curry portion was just too small; not completely satisfied with my experience today. One of the great culinary tragedies I have suffered was my prejudice against this restaurant's name. I expected to find guffawing roundeye devils manning the bar and tables, or doubleplus tacky decor. Every so often, I am wrong, and yes, I'm just as shocked as you are. I am not a huge Thai food fan. I blame my past and the lousy pseudo-pseudo-Chinese at those restaurants. (God forbid I actually have a Thai friend, and one who cooks.) Thai Tanic is changing my mind quickly about the delectable nature of Thai food. Here's a quick rundown of what I've had so far. 1. Por Pai Jae: Very good spring rolls. Nice little sweet sauce to accompany. 2. Golden Triangle: This is much better than I anticipated, tofu being the universal blandness that it is. The sweet chili peanut sauce makes it. Also, you get a healthy portion, so if you want a salad or something else without meat, it's a good protein choice. 3. Garden Rolls: Meh. Like eating a handful of random fridge crisper items, even though they came with the same sweet chili peanut sauce. I'm not ordering them again. NB: This is the only item so far that I won't reorder. 4. Papaya Salad: Most excellent. The papaya shreds are tender and tangy. Just enough string beans to be interesting, not so many that you wonder if your mother's working the kitchen. Excellent spicy lime dressing. I even ate the lettuce leaf that was supposedly garnish (take that, Bangkok). 5. Pad Khing: Tasty tasty tasty. I had it with beef, my first dish from Thai Tanic, and would gladly order it again. The beef was tender and the spices were well balanced. 6. Spicy Eggplant: My favorite dish so far. I considered calling friends in other cities to tell them about it. I may yet post about it to several email lists. The eggplants (Japanese, not globe) were tender and the chili/garlic sauce gave them a nice, meaty taste. The basil leaves added warm notes, and the red pepper strips were tender yet firm. The next time I order it, I may ask for more rice. It makes for just the right vehicle. I have not eaten in the restaurant itself, so I cannot comment on the quality of service. They are hugely busy at lunch. The decor is quite pleasant. It's dark and cool, and that makes for a nice break from the glare of DC summer sunshine. Or maybe I should stay under my rock until dark. I work around the corner from Thai Tanic. If you're looking for the best Thai restaurant in D.C., look no further than Thai Tanic. The wonderful food, good service, and a great atmosphere are reasons why they have a regular weekly clientele from the neighborhood and D.C. The owner, Suriyan, is an awesome guy and will take care of you if you happen to be eating late. This is a family run business and they all take great pride in their restaurant. The food is always really fresh and is very well seasoned. Most of the dishes have an appropriate amount of spicy kick, but they still maintain their flavor. My food has always come out of the kitchen quickly and warm. I recommend the Birds Nest on Fire for a unique Thai dish, but the Thai staples - Pad Thai, Kra Pow, and Drunken Noodles - are all first rate. I'd give it five stars, but I agree with others that the portions have shrunk. Either way, it's still a great restaurant. Much better than the fancier Thai place that opened across the street. It never seems busy in there while Thai Tanic is packed. The service is excellent and authentic. I've never had a bad experience here. Keep up the good work Suriyan! I am not a Thai food fan, but the food here was way better than the restaurant name. They had enough vegetarian options too. We ordered a Papaya salad from the appetizer, which I found delicious and my mom and sister found spicy. But I loved it! The touch of peanuts was just right. We also ordered entrees number 59, Gang pak, and 62, TAO HUW PAD TUA NGORG. The former, a red curry, was great. The bean sprouts in the latter were superb. Two bowls of rice came with the entrees and we ordered one more. It was just right for us. The entrees were about 10 bucks each and seemed very worth it. One star down for okay service and the tofu in the dishes. I like fresh tofu over fried tofu, which in the dishes were rubbery and tough. The room was super warm too. I wouldn't want to necessarily go here on my own but wouldn't say no if my Thai-food-fan family votes to go here. read more

yummy!!!! I've been to a number of Thai restaurants in DC and this place is one of the best. I'm veggie, so I can only attest to the quality of the vegan/vegetarian dishes. I've gone with meat-eaters and they enjoyed their food as well. The restaurant lacks appeal on the outside. Its located on a block of 14th Street that has a few vacant lots and junky looking storefronts. But, don't let this stop you from going in. The interior, though a little tight, is comfy and inviting. Actually, you forget about the place once you start eating. Since its kind of small, seating is always tight. Arrive early and prepare to wait a little, even for lunch. I took my visiting family there and discovered that they close between lunch and dinner, but they were kind enough to serve us even though we came in minutes before they were to close for lunch. The food is well seasoned, probably a little on the salty size. The portions are generous, you could probably get away with ordering an appetizer. And the menu is vast, lots of vegetarian/ veggie-friendly options, which is great for me. One major problem I have with other Thai restaurants in DC is that their dishes are dry, nothing is worse than a dry pad-thai or pad see eew. But Thai Tanic gets it right. I've been to this place a few times, only for lunch. Service is fast and the food is fresh. I haven't tried their drinks yet, so I have to reserve judgment on that side. I'm sorry, I just really didn't like this place. First, I didn't like the atmosphere at all. I went for lunch and it was very dark and dank and empty. The waiter wasn't particularly friendly, and the seats weren't that comfortable. Second, and more importantly, I wasn't that into the food. I almost always get the pad king at Thai places, or something similar, and the pad king here was not appetizing at all. I'm not sophisticated enough in my food tastes to say what exactly was wrong with it, it was just.. blah. I left Thaitanic feeling disappointed and wishing I had spent my money for a satisfying Brie/turkey sandwich at Cosi instead. I definitely won't be going back. read more

At first I kind of liked this place, but then I realized it was because I was drunk and thrown off by the copious amount of hot pepper. In truth, this Thai restaurant uses A LOT of spice. Like, the lowest level of spice will send any normal American to a trough of ice water begging for relief. That's fine, I can play that game...if there is a reward in the form of delicious flavor and food. Those things are missing at Thai Tanic. The curry dishes are bland, the drunken noodles, bland. Everything tastes like eating fire. I have now had the pumpkin curry, Panang, tom kah gai soup, and drunken noodles. None of it was very good. And this place is EXPENSIVE. Normally I splurge on a nice Thai meal at around $22-30. This place is more like $45 (based on two people eating). That's a negatory in my book. read more

OK, so my friends Aaron and Evan are all lovin on this place and took me here for dinner on a Saturday night with another friend (also an Aaron..I need to diversify in terms of friend names, seriously). I really wanted to give it five stars because they do love it so, but the service really killed that fifth star. It was so close, Thai Tanic, why'd you have to go and hurt us like that? So, Bangkok Sunsets and Bull Witch Projects equal some of the awesomest drinks I have had! Seriously cool drinks. The tom kar gai they brought me had shrimp instead of chicken, but it was yummy anyway. It was filling though, so when it came time to split the thai titanic star and the drunken noodles with beef, I was stuffed and could barely eat it. That made me a sad panda. However, I forced myself, and it was delicious. I had to ask for peanut sauce three times before i got it (and the restaurant was basically empty at this point), which was way annoying. But, went very nicely on the hoi jur in the thai tanic star! Also, when we were ready to leave, it took forever to get the check. Didn't they want us out of there?? We were pretty much the last table. We decided to simplify life and just split everything four ways. Our waitress took our credit cards and all, and then disappeared. A good fifteen minutes later, she told us their credit card machine was not working and we had to pay cash. Annoying. So, sorry fellas, but I had to remove the star. Pffft. After recently moving to DC, and encountering a constant buzz about Thai Tanic, and wanting some Thai, I decided to try it out. A friend even recommended it to me, and I figured, "why not?" So I went with another former friend to this location to shovel in some food. The restaurant was packed with diners, and there was a wait. Since there were so many people, I thought the place would be good (but having lived in Austin, where all the food sucks and yet the places are packed, I've developed a healthy skepticism). I ordered the Golden Triangle (fried tofu w/ sweet chili sauce) for my appetizer, and the Gang Pak (spicy tofu dish). Golden Triangle - was okay. That's rather difficult to mess up. Gang Pak - bland and watery. I didn't finish it. The vegetables had no flavor, so it felt like I was just eating wet matter. Flavor is definitely an afterthought at this place. We were in the restaurant under 45 minutes, and our waitress was already rushing us out (and getting testy). Tiny restaurant, so I guess they wanted us to leave to make room for the line of customers piling up at the door (this was during the big snow storm). Anyway, don't believe all the hype. read more

My go-to Thai restaurant for pad kee mao. My husband generally gets a green curry. with chicken or shrimp. We've eaten in the restaurant, ordered for pick-up and delivery. Ate at Thai Tanic 3 nights in a row (Oct 27, 28, 29, 2010) while visiting DC for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. The food at Thai Tanic was so good we kept coming back to try more dishes. The 2nd night, one employee recognized us and greeted us. The 3rd night, 3 employees welcomed us warmly during a very busy Friday night. For each dish, they asked the level of spiciness we wanted. These are the dishes we ate (and their #s on the Menu): 3. Chicken Satay: skewers of chicken marinated in thai spices, grilled and served with peanut sauce and cucumber relish. 6. Yum Woon Sen: spicy cellophane (silver) noodles with shrimp and minced chicken seasoned with chili, red onions, and lime juice. 8. Beef Nam Tok: grilled beef seasoned with scallions, roasted rice powder, red onions, chili powder, and fresh lime juice. 20. Tom Ka Gai (Chicken) Soup: (The Tom Ka Gui was the best I have ever tasted.) 66. Mee Pad: choice of meat stir-fried with egg noodles, scallions, carrots, celery, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Special Pork Dish of the week. Jasmine rice Steamed broccoli The House Sauvignon Blanc, which is very nice and goes well with Thai food's spiciness. Very good food, excellent service, good prices. Bog-standard Thai - not terrible, but dull. Nothing was particularly spicy, nothing tasted particularly fresh, and everything felt a little heavy, oily, and by rote. Tod Man Pla (fishcakes) were dry and boring, and a mixed seafood in yellow curry featured a few sad bits of squid, three or four mealy mussels, and two shrimp. My dining companion's duck was also dry, and the red curry sauce had an unpleasant vinegary tang like nothing we ever tasted in Bangkok. Back when Thai Tanic was a 14th Street pioneer, it was doubtless a great addition to a reviving neighborhood; now, it just seems like a mediocre neighborhood spot, caught in a rut - the Thai equivalent of the Chinese you go to because you always have, not because you expect much in the way of interesting food. read more

While living in Washington DC, my bf and I frequented this place because it was close and convenient. Pad Thai was great and the Boiling Sea Soup was amazing. They have take out and fix their food quick and to perfection. It was a neighborhood feel that I miss! read more

I ordered the panang tofu after my server recommended it and it did not disappoint. It was savory with the most delicious fried tofu I've ever had. The place has kind of a late 90's vibe with their decor and $5 bottled beers like singha which is even better. Hoping to go back again before I leave D.C. read more
