This cafe is located on the 1st floor, so close to the main entrance. It is very accessible even if you don't have any library business. It is a small cafe with mostly pre-prepared items. But has a good seating overlooking the library gift shop. I had the hot chocolate and it was decent. Service was okay. It was $5.50. I went to explore the famous New York Public library and spent a few hours there and got a little hungry. Luckily this little cafe was right inside of the library souvenir store and so I was able to really explore and experience this wonderful place. I loved it! I didn't have to leave and come back. It was a little busy but I was able to get a seat and was able to enjoy my little meal and relax. The latte was good and I've never had a good Quiche before and so I was never a quiche person, but surprisingly, I loved it! I don't have many quiches to compare it to besides the cold little ones in certain gatherings that taste yucky, but this was served hot and tasty very creamy, light, and fresh. Other options include sandwiches, salads, cupcakes and desserts. It's a nice cafe. I really loved my experience and I was able to buy a little some from the gift shop too which made it fun. The exhibition is right on the other side. So it's a really cool place to relax and take a break. read more

This review is for the Amy's Bread across the street at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library. It is located all the way on the top seventh floor, and has a few tables and chairs though they are usually always full. If the weather is nice, I would recommend stepping out onto the adjacent terrace and enjoying the weather and views. There is only one staff member manning the stall at one time, so there is usually a wait. On my most recent visit, I saw that they now take Apple Pay (hallelujah) so no worries if you forgot your wallet. read more

Anytime I'm in Manhattan. I try to make a stop at Amy's bread. Their red velvet and chocolate cakes are delicious. One thing I generally dislike with many desserts is the extremely sweet icing. The buttercream that Amy's uses has the right balance of creaminess with not being too sweet. For the savory fans, I suggest you try the cheese biscuits. I am writing about the Amy's Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library which is also on Fifth Avenue diagonally accross the street. 1 - Every time I have been there, the server was, at most, efficient. 90% of the time they are noticably unfriendly and have no clue about just being a good server. It reflects bad on Amy's and the NYPL. 2 - Often, the server (these are behind the counter, they don't serve like waiters/waitresses), dictates their "rules" like a little Stalin. They don't open on time, and close a bit early. They are rude - as if you should thank them for being there. They never say thank you, or you're welcome, etc. 3 - Today, and not only today, they ran out of coffee at least an hour before closing, out of sugar at least two hours before that, (still had the diet stuff), and very often run out of food. The food is sort of understandable - but COFFEE and SUGAR?? 4 - The lids on the coffee cups are remarkable. They don't really fit, and I, and people I have seen, didn't quite get it on right and spilled coffee, or spilled coffee trying to get in on. Have they figured this out YET? 5 - If you ask me (and no one is asking :)) I would bid out the contract to another company, or give Amy's one month to fix it or get out. 6 - This does not apply to the library with the lions accross the street - they have been reasonable there for the most part. My complaint there is that people camp out with their computers - while it is quite busy and there are a lot of tourists there that are buying expensive stuff in the adjoining store. At least let them have coffee and a snack so they buy more. Does Amy's tell the library how much business they are losing. (BTW - I once said this to a guard - I had a seat but others didn't - so the guard acted like he owned the place and said it is their "right". Deduct the guard's pay for every dollar they lose in the adjoining store because people leave sooner. 7 - In the Stavros library - they could easily put in a few more tables - usually OK, but sometimes there are no seats. Also, clean up the table every so often (or more often than they do.) 8 - All this is moot if Amy's is there because they are related to someone in charge of the library. That is the only way the library could be so blind about these simple things. OK - I said it. I told the truth. BTW - the outside deck at the Stavros library is fantastic. If Amy's was better, they would get more people up there I think. read more

Amy's would have been a Five Star experience. The one employee was working her tail off. She was friendly. My salad was Delicious! I'm taking off a star because the table was dirty. The tray on the table is glued to the top of the table making it impossible to clean inside and around. I'm taking off one star because they didn't have any forks. Come on! I'm eating a salad. I highly recommend the Quinoa Salad. With tax it's $10.07 and comes with a Sourdough Roll. I didn't care for the Roll at all. Doughy with a tough crust. It was a filling lunch while in the library. I am not sure if I would eat there again. I go by my hunger and time to eat. I was hungry today! You check it out and decide. read more

The person who runs this branch was very unpleasant and gestapo- like in not allowing anyone to see use their tables before he opened (late). The selection is meager and does not include salads as shown on their web site. The quiche was quite good but sandwiches were pre-made and soggy. Overall not a pleasant lunch. read more

This company is inappropriate for the NYPL. They are closed too often, and with short or no notice. Recently, they have begun to open late -at 12pm. Twice in my experience; but I come only occasionally. They are only open until 5pm (when open). They are as expensive as could possibly be. For each of these reasons they should be removed. It is my guess that they are in violation of their lease: it probably provides for regular opening and availability times as a condition of renting the space. But if it does not, it should -and they would not be able to comply. Even when they are open, the most basic item they can sell at a cafe is coffee (Amy: cafe is french for coffee). But often, as early as 3:30pm they are 'out' and refuse to make more because they claim it would not sell. Well, I am a NYPL patron, come to do work and stay into the evening. I want a cup of coffee from the cafe before they close -often at just 3:30-4pm. Usually, that is too late for a regular coffee. When it comes to a library, and research, who would not want coffee available ? Moreover, under the guise of being a high-tier, 'gourmet' cafe, AMY Breads sell items at the highest prices that will be supported by (only) a majority of the NYPL patrons. I can afford -any- cafe. But I value money and respect myself for the work I've done. I also am aware that there are some patrons who cannot afford, or are at least dissuaded from purchasing, the cafe items at these most expensive prices. At some point, the NYPL must balance its attempt to be upscale, modern and fashionable, with the needs of its patrons. I also dare anyone to look over their items for sale and be impressed. The bakery goods are no better than Starbucks, at best. They are small, costly, unimpressive in taste and sometimes seemingly dessicated. Yet Amy advertizes her cookbook! read more

Libraries and snacks don't go usually together but at this library/landmark's ground floor is a small cafe that has a fun variety of pastries. (The coffee they serve here is strong. I drink my coffee black, always, and found it to be very bitter.) Anyhow, I was compelled to review this place thanks to their pistachio croissant twist, which was on the sweeter side but quite delicious-a perfect pick me up for a day without caffeine. Kudos to the patient cashiers working here- tourists can be so stubborn and frustrating. I'd love to know who Amy is so I can ask her for the recipe to now, one of my favorite dessert pastries! :) read more

Epic fail for this Amy's concession at the 5th Avenue branch of the NYPL. I brought an out of town guest to see the Salinger exhibit and thought it would be nice to have coffee and a pastry before queuing up. Showed up around 3:45, perfect coffee hour and was told there was no coffee left, just tea. The only pastries were one black and white cookie and some kind of twisty thing with sesame seeds. Asked the counter person how long before fresh coffee would be available and he responded with an extremely impatient tone that the wait was 40 minutes. As if I was inconveniencing him by inquiring! Settled for tea and the last cookie. Tables were filthy. Service abominable. How do you call yourself a cafe and not have coffee and pastries during the holiday season and hold a concession in a landmark attraction in NYC with a hugely popular exhibition on view? Amateurish and sloppy. Fail. Sorry Amy's, used to frequent your spot on 9th but the quality has really gone down there as well. Bought some croissants a few months ago and they were mushy like boxed, not flaky. Get it together or please get out of the NYPL and let someone who cares have the concession. Oh, and that last black and white cookie was stale. Should have known. read more
