Anatara continues to be one of those rare restaurants that consistently delivers--a dependable meeting place for Indian cuisine interpreted with creativity and flair. And for the most part, it lives up to that reputation every single time. Let's start with what they do exceptionally well. The Crab Podimas remains a standout, packed with flavor and executed with finesse. The Vazhaipoo Kola is another triumph, balancing texture and spice beautifully. Their signature Podi Idly continues to be a benchmark dish--comforting, addictive, and never disappointing. The Madras Chicken Curry, Appams, and Keeranur Biriyani were all enjoyable, though not quite at the same level as the restaurant's strongest offerings. Where things began to unravel was with the Neer Dosa and Prawn Ghee Roast. As someone who is deeply passionate about Ghee Roast, I hold this dish to a very high standard. The benchmark, for me, remains the iconic version served at the legendary Shetty Lunch Home in Kundapur, near Mangalore--a dish so memorable that I once took a flight specifically to experience it. A great Ghee Roast is all about intensity, balance, and the rich caramelization of ghee and spices. What arrived at Anatara felt like a reinterpretation too far: the sauce was thin and almost saar-like, lacking the concentrated depth and texture that define the original. Some classics earn their iconic status for a reason, and not every dish benefits from a twist. Sometimes authenticity is the innovation. If the team is looking for inspiration, a visit to places like Kudla in Richmond Circle, Anupam's Coast to Coast on Church Street, or any of the Shetty Lunch Home branches in Bangalore would be worthwhile. Each serves a version that stays true to the essence of the dish while showcasing why Ghee Roast remains one of coastal Karnataka's most celebrated culinary creations. While you're at it, I'd also recommend trying their Neer Dosa as well--Kudla, Coast to Coast, and Shetty Lunch Home all demonstrate how the dish can retain its delicate softness and lacy texture without becoming overly sticky. Speaking of Neer Dosa, Anatara's version missed the mark for me. The texture was noticeably sticky, and while I was told by the chef that this was expected, my experience suggests otherwise. Having made Neer Dosas myself and eaten countless versions across restaurants, I believe the dosa can retain its softness and character without becoming overly gummy. Texture is just as important as flavor, and here it detracted from the overall experience. Thankfully, we ended the meal on a high note with their Chai--aromatic, comforting, and consistently excellent. A fitting finish to a meal that, despite a couple of missteps, reminded me why Anatara remains a place I keep returning to. read more

My recent dinner at Anantara left me with a bit of a mixed impression. On the positive side, the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our meal. However, there were some notable downsides with the food. Starting with the railway cutlet, the flavor itself was quite enjoyable. However, we were surprised and frankly a bit disappointed that what we thought would be a side of tamarind-date chutney was nowhere to be found. Instead, it was served with a large side of ketchup, which felt quite out of place and honestly detracted from the experience. To add to this, the $16 price tag for just two cutlets, which were essentially the size of nuggets, felt quite steep. The pickled onions that accompanied the cutlet were also more like fresh onions than pickled, which my partner and I had to leave mostly untouched. The gutti vankaya was probably the highlight of our meal. The dish was well-prepared. The occasional spicy pepper made me wish for more. While good, it didn't quite deliver the depth of flavor we were hoping for. The potlam biryani with chicken boasted a beautiful presentation. Unfortunately, the flavors were a little flatter than other biryani's we've had. We definitely felt it needed a variety of chutney or sauces to add more dimension than what is already provided. On the positive side, the chicken itself was moist. However, the accompanying yogurt raita was overwhelmed by an excessive amount of raw onions, making it another item we barely touched. One other thing to note is that the restaurant had a very strong, perfume-like floral scent that was quite overpowering and a bit much for my nose throughout the dining experience. Overall, while Anantara has friendly and attentive staff, the inconsistencies with the sides, the pricing of the appetizers, and the lack of depth in some dishes left us feeling underwhelmed. My family and I had a memorable meal at Anantara today with our usual gang, and I just had to write this review while it's still fresh in my mind. This newly opened fine-dining South Indian eatery is unlike most other Indian restaurants in the Fremont area. The menu is thoughtfully crafted - we had a hard time deciding what to order because everything looked so enticing. And to top it off, we dined during the Valentine's Day special weekend, so we were working with a limited menu! For appetizers, we tried the Chilli Malli Crab Cakes, Curry Leaf Yogurt Chicken, and Shrimp Inji Puli. The crab cakes were delicious - well-balanced in flavor, soft, and allowing the crab to shine. The chicken, unfortunately, wasn't served warm, but the flavors were still on point. The shrimp, however, were absolutely fantastic - tangy, crispy, and fresh. I couldn't stop eating them! For the main course, we had the Black Cod Pollichathu and Grandma's Goat Curry with Appam and Malabar Porotta. The black cod was outstanding - soft, flaky, and buttery, coated in a delicious masala paste and steamed inside a banana leaf. The goat curry was rich and flavorful, while the porottas were freshly made, perfectly flaky, and incredibly tasty. The ambience was both cozy and classy. A special shoutout to Sandy, our server, who was prompt and friendly. We had a fantastic experience celebrating a birthday at Anantara in Pacific Commons! The ambience is lovely, and the staff are genuinely friendly and attentive. They went above and beyond by providing a complimentary dessert for the birthday celebration and even took pictures for us - such thoughtful touches! Starters: The Tender Jack Cutlet (tender jackfruit, sweet potatoes, beets, tamarind-date chutney) was absolutely top notch. For Valentine's Day, they made them heart-shaped, which was adorable! Highly recommend this dish. The Inji-Puli Lotus Root was one of the most amazing lotus root dishes we've ever had. The lotus root medallions were marinated in a tangy ginger-tamarind glaze and had a lovely sweet, fluffy texture. We also tried a fried chicken dish from their special Valentine's Day menu - it was nicely spicy and delicious. Main Course: The Veggie Potlam Biryani was presented beautifully, wrapped in a banana leaf and served with raita. It was warm and incredibly flavorful. However, the absolute star of the meal was the Baked Cauliflower dish! It came with an amazing gravy and two small Malabar parathas - this was outstanding! Drinks & Desserts: The Lemon Rosé Soda was okay, nothing special. I've been to Anantara a few times before and loved the food, which is why I decided to take my family there for Mother's Day. I made a reservation a few days ahead, thinking it would be a great experience. But this time was disappointing. They had a special Mother's Day menu with fewer options, and the prices for each dish were $2-$6 higher than usual, even though the portions and presentation were the same. Nothing felt special--no creative plating, no extra effort. A few of my favorite dishes weren't on the menu, so I asked for the server's recommendations, but they didn't turn out great. The restaurant was packed and extremely loud, making it hard to enjoy the meal. I still think Anantara has good food, but I wouldn't recommend it for a special occasion. Just had a wonderful dinner experience at Anantra Fremont tonight! We started with the Tender Jack Cutlet and Paneer Pockets, both of which were delicious. For our main course, we thoroughly enjoyed the diverse flavors of the Angamaly Mango Curry, Gutti Vankaya, and Chettinad Veg Curry, perfectly complemented by the soft Malabar Porotta and fluffy Appam. The Gulab Jamun Brûlée was a unique and satisfying end to the meal. The ambience of the restaurant was lovely, and the service was excellent. My only suggestion would be to consider adding a touch more tanginess to the Angamaly Mango Curry for an extra zing. It would also be great to see a selection of cocktails and mocktails added to the menu in the future. We had a fantastic dining experience at Anantara! The Malabar Coastal Black Cod was the highlight--perfectly cooked, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. Our server, Ganesh, was incredibly helpful, guiding us through the menu and making excellent recommendations. The Appam was good, though we felt that for the price, either the portion size could be larger or there should be two pieces instead of one.
