They had live music & when the first set was done, good tunes after. Popcorn to snack on while you wait. Clean! I appreciate the quality of renovations when I can walk into an establishment and feel like it's my first time in the building. The place is well kept and displays a wood finish that allows for a cozy feel with plenty of natural sunlight. The staff was friendly and attentive. The manger came over and checked on our table in a welcoming manner. As for the food, I had a jersey burger (pork roll and egg) that hit the spot. The beer was cold as well! Went to this place while they were still doing construction on the outside. Therefore, it just opened. The inside looked fantastic, after being redone from what Connolly Station used to be. I ordered their French onion soup as an appetizer, and it was great. Full of flavor. My friend also got the same. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, and it was also quite good. Wish they had more options other than white bread. I have to add that 3/4 of the sandwich was lettuce though. My friend got the hedge salad and said it was great. Our first time to the Anchor Tavern. Food and service really exceeded our expectations. Smart menu; terrific to see this place taking a different approach. We had a variety of dishes at our table -- rotisserie chicken wings, burgers, great side dishes, wraps and more. Everything was outstanding, made all the better by service-with-a-smile from our waitress, Alyson. Give this young lady a raise and a promotion!! Band started toward the end of our dinner. Perfect. We sat outside in the side patio. There was a band playing that sounded great and the crowd was chill. It was a beautiful night so sitting outside was really nice! The mussels are phenomenal. We ordered the Thai sauce and I was pleasantly surprised. Not too spicy but a nice kick! We also had the best and goat cheese salad, rotisserie chicken wrap and a cheeseburger. All three were delicious. Service was friendly and the drinks were tasty. If you're only going to get apps I highly recommend the mussels. read more

Anchor is a nice new place in Belmar! The wood decor really makes for a nice atmosphere. Lots of good beers in bittles and on tap. Mussels marinara were great, ribs were great, quesadilla was above average. Service was prompt, friendly, and consistent. The location and outdoor seating are great for summertime guests. We didn't go inside so I can't comment on the rest of the ambiance. The mixed drink I ordered was tasty but a wee bit small for the price. The salads we got to start were great... their dressing is fantastic. I got a roasted chicken w sweet potatoes and mac & cheese. The chicken & mac & cheese were OK, but the sweet potatoes were horrible. Tasted straight out of a can. My bf had the ribs w mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. We came in for drinks once and found that they made nice cocktails. The bartenders were friendly and urged us to come back for the chicken. We returned one night for dinner and started with mussels steamed in white wine and garlic. Way too much water in the broth so the dunking liquid was flavorless; the mussel liquor and spices are an important part of eating mussels. Management apparently disagrees, because they only served half a piece of bread with the appetizer. The mussels themselves were juicy but not as flavorful as they should have been.. Cut to the Cesar salad, which was okay, but the cheese was sliced too thick -if it was Parmesan, it was flavorless Parmesan. I got my entree 30 seconds later; not great timing. The chicken meat had a nice flavor from the wood, but the skin was barely spiced. Skin should be the best part of a rotisserie chicken.... The cornbread was good, but the whipped potatoes must have been made with sour milk. Yucch. Gravy and stuffing edible, but subpar. Service was okay. You'd think they'd offer us dessert or something after we mentioned how dreadful the potatoes were, but no. read more

Went here with a group of friends and we had three kids with us. It was a big group and I did call early to see if we could make reservations but they do not take reservations. We did have to wait but considering there were 11 of us and it was a Saturday night they didn't make us wait to long. The waitress was friendly and everyone enjoyed their food. I had the salmon with the wood fire vegetables and whipped potatoes. I really liked it. My husband had the baby back ribs and he didn't really like it but he did like his sides and he also got mussels for an app and enjoyed those. All the kids got Mac and cheese and they all seemed to love that! They did sit us right by the bar so it was a little noisy but for the most part we all enjoyed dining at anchor. They just took kids chicken fingers fried them to death and put them on a small bun. They were so greasy I couldn't eat them all. This place saved our lives late night. Went on a fishing trip for my birthday off in Belmar. It ran later than expected and we were starving. It is easy to get to many parts of The Jersey Shore from NY via Penn Station's NJRR/ NJ Transit Trains using their NJRR NJ Transit Blue Coastal-Line Branch. This time we, again, decided to re-visit Belmar, NJ. The Belmar NJ, (The Jersey Shore), RR Station is, more-or-less, just off Route 35 River Road at, roughly, between, what could be considered Ninth Avenue and Tenth Avenue. We do not think that is an unreasonable distance to the general vicinity of the areas that we wished to re-visit, which were approximately in the vicinity of Eighth Avenue and Main Street, or, thereabouts. In inclement weather -or- if you do not care to walk, the taxi ride is not too unreasonable. This time in Belmar, we chose the Anchor Tavern on the corner of Main Street and Eighth Avenue in Belmar, NJ, before having our desert nearby. IF you are going to eat outside, it is probably easier to use their Eighth Avenue entrance. We chose to eat inside so we chose to enter via their 713 Main Street entrance around the corner. It is just easier to get to the vintage-type wooden-booth tavern-tables for an informal, relaxed, deliciously tasty meal from a decent menu, especially their Daily Special Menu. Informal friendly "Rustic, Tavern-Style" service was appreciated that came with a very comfortable Price-Tab. Their Daily Special came with two sides. All the selections we choose here have been always delectable; all their choices always are for us each time we visited. We never find any fault with enjoying any selection from their menus. And, we find that their late night menus that go to 1am comes in very handy if we want to catch a late meal before taking the Railroad back to NYC Penn Station. We always enjoy our meals at Anchor Tavern when we come to this area. If you enjoy casual, informal rustic tavern-type eating, then we think you will also enjoy Anchor. read more

We ate here both days during our recent stay in Belmar. We ordered the Jersey Burger - a burger topped with pork roll, egg and cheese. The burger meat is a custom blend of three cuts of beef making them the BEST burgers we've eaten. Fries are delicious, you just don't get enough of them. The goat cheese and beet salad over arugula, topped with our choice of grilled salmon was also delicious. The salmon was very flavorful, moist, flaky, and grilled to perfection. We also tried the New England clam chowder that's topped with a tender puffed pastry. Although very good, the soup is thin. The pineapple margaritas are refreshing after a day at the beach. Our only issue with the service is that we had to ask for utensils both times we were there. read more

Frequent visitor and have found the place to be friendly and responsive. My problem is with the food! I was there this Saturday with my son and daughter and a friend of my daughter. I ordered the Steak Salad and my son ordered a Filet Mignon. My jaw is still sore from attempting to chew it. My son had the same experience. This is a fun bar in Belmar and is a great place to come and watch the game. The issue is the service at the bar was at a snails pace. I sat down and the bar was no full. The bartenders walked by me 3 times. Then I had to wait 15 minutes to get the check. I held my money up several times to pay. Then I asked can I pay and was told wait a minute while the bartender stocked the bar. I had considered eating here while I was waiting and then figured I didn't have the time to order food, wait and then wait again. It's too bad. The bar is fun and looks like it has a great menu so go in there with more extra time than usual and you should be fine. read more

My mother and I went to the tavern not knowing Connolly station was no longer there.. decided to try it anyway. Great job with the renovations. Food was great, pretty traditional shore town tavern food, but delicious and served quickly. Our server, however, was very rude. Brianna, I believe. Not sure what her problem was, we were very nice, but she took my mother by surprise, which rarely happens. People like that just do not belong being part of wait staff. Otherwise things were nice. My husband and I went here on a date night but we were very disappointed with the food. I ordered the baby-back ribs which were so DRY I couldn't even eat them. My side of mashed sweet potatoes were obviously out of a can and my macaroni and cheese side arrived barely warm. My husband's burger came with mushrooms which tasted like they were from a can also. The only thing good about our meal was his side of french fries which were actually very good. So I wanted to eat somewhere outside and I chose anchor tavern in Belmar because it was close and the menu sounded interesting. One of the worst meals I've ever had out. The twice baked potato soup was spicy and gummy. The Bavarian pretzels were good and the red sangria was good. The soft shell crab sandwich was so tiny you couldn't even see it on the sandwich. The fish and chips were soooo greasy and it was definitely frozen fish. The fries weren't even that great. The waitress was pleasant but the server was throwing the food on the table. This place is packed! Went in for dinner on a weekend, and the wait was long but understandable. The entire staff was really friendly, especially my server, Jackie! The receptionists, Anahi and Lexie, was super fun to talk to as well! Seriously keep up the good work guys! Now for the food. Popcorn as a starting snack is really unique, never seen this before! And oh my the soft shell crab was heaven in my mouth. Seriously this is amazing, and it's so unique. Personally one of my top foods now. The serving portions were very good for the price. Every burger/sandwich comes with fries, and they're pretty tasty. God I wish I lived in this area. Now I know why it's so popular! As for the interior, inside is super clean, a bar in the middle with TVs surrounding it, and USB port sockets on booth seats! In short, Anchor Tavern is a modern, cozy, beach shack that is so much bigger than a shack, that serves savory, mouthwatering dishes with such lovely staff members.
