Located in Union City, CA in a corner of a plaza. I've been going to Andersen Bakery for a few years now. (Another location at Newpark Mall had closed, so this location will be the closest in the Union City-Newark-Fremont area.) I enjoyed their fresh baked pastries and especially their strawberry cake (light, not too sweet, fresh, with light cream layered between light chiffon cake). I think their strawberry cake is very good, but it's $4 a slice! There is a list of of freshly baked times (about $3 ea) & the times when the items are out. The positives are for the pastries, bread, and sandwiches - all fresh & delicious! For bread, half & full loaves are offered. If you are ordering while on lunch break, I recommend an order placed ahead. However, there is no separate line for pick up. Since I've been coming here for a few months, products have always been fresh & tasty. I enjoy their cruffins, fruit pastries, croissants, and bread. I usually order to go. Parking seemed sufficient, but could be a little tight during lunch. Customer service is ok. The staff is meticulous when taking your order. My comments are primarily just for the baked items displayed on the counter. However, I ordered the roasted tomato caprese (on the menu) and the melted cheese tuna sandwich (special) sandwiches. Taller white dude with a pot belly was taking my order. Asked what the gold blooded print on my sweater meant as he's been seeing it all day. I explained that it was a Warriors fan thing representing the colors they wear. He laughs and said it's kind of dumb. I tell him that if he doesn't follow a team/sport then it wouldn't make sense to him. He tells me he doesn't really watch sports. "well then, OBVIOUSLY it doesn't make sense then does it?" I'm a friend of Marie J. I actually purchased some Mango pastries for her which she LOVED! I am so sorry that she had such a bad experience. I have been going to this bakery/restaurant for years. The workers have always been very pleasant. I hope that it was genuine. You never know who you are snubbing. This person would have done a lot of business with this store. I have lived in Fremont/Newark for 20+ years and while there has been an Andersen Bakery at newpark for years I never went in. Mainly because the smell of baking bread makes me naseous. (Which sucks because I truely love all bread!). Anyway, while out running errands on my lunch break my stomach started growling and I needed food, STAT. I stopped in here. PROS: It didn't smell like baking bread, which is a plus for me, but maybe not for you. The service was fast even though it was lunch time. The place was clean and there were samples. CONS: Staff wasn't overly friendly, but everyone has an off day. I ordered Iced Tea and wasn't warned that it was flavored. I usually get iced tea when I'm out and most places are nice enough to let you know if it's flavored in case that isn't your cup of tea (pun intended). I don't mind flavored tea if I'm in the mood, but today I wasn't. I would have stuck with water. Oh well. Now to the food. Man, was it bland. I got the turkey and mozzarella. Rest assured there is truth in advertising because that's exactly what it was. Bread, lettuce, turkey, mozarella and mayo. Thats it. No catch, no zip, no nothing. I ordered the Tomato Basil Ravoili "soup" as well. It was equally as bland and the soup was so thin is should have just been broth. The ravoloi inside was mushy and flavorless. I however will no give up hope. I'll at least try another kind of sandwich and a differnt soup before I pull the plug on this one. But being that Panera is the same price with much more flavor, I don't know how often I will make it to Andersens anyway. read more

I know there are many other fine bakeries around the bay area, but one sandwich keeps me returning to Andersen Bakery: The Chicken Avocado on Sourdough! This is the only thing I ever order here, so you may take that into account when considering my high 4 star rating. First, the sourdough is the reason the sandwich is so good. The crust of the bread is crunchy while maintaining a wonderful sour, moist, and dense interior. The pesto mayo along with lemon tastes great with the chicken and lettuce! On cold days, I get a half turkey mozzarella and a cup of clam chowder and on warmer days, I opt for a salad instead of the soup. Always fresh, always yummy. The best pastries I've had are the Creamy French, Pesto Bread and the Raisin Saffron Twist (they make it the best here!)! I came here for lunch last week around 1:30ish. The place was pretty slow and I just ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad. Got my salad pretty quick and it was nothing special. The dressing was already on and there was way to much of it. The grilled chicken looked like it had been pre-cooked and had no signs of grill marks or anything. On top of that it appeared to have been quickly reheated, so it was kind of a luke-warm rubbery consistency. As I was finishing my salad I noticed a small hair on my plate that did not belong to me. The first time we went to this Andersen Bakery in Union City we were helped by Vianney, she's very friendly and so we've been going to this location since. The kids there are very friendly, especially Vianney, Jorge and (there is one girl that I keep forgetting the name) and we love these kids, they have always provided good service. Believe me not all Andersen Bakery are created equal. We have tried a few Andersen but this is the one we liked the best, the Milpitas (Great Mall) and Daly City ones are the worst in service, taste and freshness. Whenever we go to any Andersen Bakery including the Union City location, I will always have the half & half for lunch, clam chowder and swiss turkey avocado sandwich and have tried different bread and they are always fresh. My hubby and I also love their chicken Caesar salad. We always will get (to go) the almond croissants, blueberry tart, bread pudding slices, saffron bread stick for my hubby and bread (we try different ones) and they are all good. They have this bread pudding (sometimes with blueberry) that I really love. I ordered it one time for Christmas and the chocolate Yule Log and my family loved it. read more

I frequent here about 1 a week or so. I went and picked up a big order for myself and a few people, and the service was fairly fast (mind you I did call ahead...), and food tasted great as ALWAYS... Im so happy I am never let down when I come here! This place overall is pretty basic. It's spacious with plenty of sitting, the food came out fairly quickly, the employees were all nice - but nothing really stands out about it. I tried the half sandwich (avocado & turkey) and half salad (Caesar) combo. They were alright, neither really rich or hearty in any flavor. Not too many people can do a exceptional tuna sandwich- but the simplicity of the sandwich combined with delicious bread (I take mine in whole grain with sprouts) has got me hooked. I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing-- so this is my usual. Now onto the sweets that you must try: the bread pudding is amazing, not overkill on the sweet yet very satisfying.
