I really like the bakery , been there twice so far with my Sisters for lunch. They have lunch specials you can pick 2 so I got the Tomato Raviolini soup and half a Tuna sandwich and it is delicious. Also tried the cheese danish and scones , so good! I noticed they stay busy in the afternoons. They are very friendly and it is a welcoming atmosphere. I could not be more upset at a bakery. Service- poor, my friend and I went in and bought one creamy French each and the cashier saw us and proceeded to talk to his coworker for another 2 minutes before helping us out. His attitude was fine that's not the issue. Food- so I ordered a creamy French and had the first two bites in my car and it went great! I came home to finish the rest of my creamy French and there was no cream in the rest of the baguette. How is it possible that you only smeared cream on 1/4 of this creamy baguette?? And stop???? I'm so mad that I paid basically $4 for a piece of bread with literally no cream in it. The bread alone isn't even tasty. It's rock hard and there's hardly any bread left. I'm extremely disappointed. Pretty much a bakery chain like Panera. I like Panera's sandwich combos better (w/soup/salad) , but I like the bread and pastries here more. I actually rarely eat in here (maybe once), but I'll often drop in and pick up a baguette along with some pastries for the house. The baked goods here are better than anything I can get at any grocery store. Fruit Danishes ($3.50/5*) I love these here. Textbook Danish dough, puffy and soft. It is the perfect size and the fruit, which ever you pick, always add a nice tart contrast to the slightly sweet pastry. Cheese Danish ($4/4*) These are larger than the fruit ones, and I don't know why that is. I'll split these at home with a knife. The soft baked cream cheese is nice, but for some reason, I'm always yearning for a fruit contrast. Oatmeal Cookie ($2.75/4*) Larger and flatter in style. It looked too dark for me as I thought it was over baked. But nope, no burnt flavor. Nice buttery flavor and the chewy oatmeal comes through. I prefer a little crispness on the bottom, but this is still repeat worthy. Baguette: ($2.95/4*) Not my favorite as I like Seven Hills' version a tad more, more pronounced crust/flavor. But this one isn't bad at all, and for most applications, this is very serviceable. This is closer to me, so I get this more often. Roast Beef Sandwich ($8.75/3.5*) Super basic sandwich. Hefty enough that it is easily 2 meals for me, which is an awesome value. The beef is really natural tasting that I actually like to salt and pepper it myself. I hate when it is salty and preserved tasting, makes it more like ham than beef. Super simple produce and mustard. If you want to jazz it up, you may have to customize it yourself. I often like it simple. Ham n' Cheese Baguette ($6/5*) So this is sitting in their case, already assembled. It is in their petite baguette so it is quite thin but it is about 8 inches long. The fillings are super modest and totally resembles French portions versus American. They use a good ham, not salty nor water logged. They use Gruyere, money. A light spread of Dijon mustard and good hits of cornichons, double money. And the clincher here, have them toast it so the bread gets nice and crunchy and the cheese melts and bonds everything together. I've been getting this weekly since I've discovered it. #infatuated The kicker with the sandwich though are their breads. Most breads are really simply good here. Not like Boudin, where you'll get jaw cramps chomping on that hard ass bread. I love their sliced wheat, where the crumb of the bread resembles sourdough, dense and chewy. And the crust has an old world rye feel. And their baguettes when toasted is as solid as it gets. Something I totally wouldn't expect from an American chain. I come here all the time! As in allll the time!!! The seasoned workers know my order by now.... because I am here all the time!!!! I love their breads, the pastries, the tropical iced tea, and my favorite sandwich, the farmer's chicken salad, no sprouts on raisin bread. Everyone here works hard. I see them hustling on days when the line is out the door. They have staff who you can tell have a system down and the work flows smoothly no matter how hectic. There are those who need more support than others, and I don't think the manager has quite figured out where and when to provide more resources. Unfortunately for me, I came on one of their bad days. The guy who helped me nearly took fifteen minutes to get my three slices of Strawberry cake ready. He opened every drawer looking for plastic wrappers. He found one plastic wrap for one slice of cake as I soon found out when I was handed my order. At $4/slice, I got these itty bitty, teeny pieces of cake which was pretty sorry. I wanted to share my store experience at the Union City (whipple/dyer) location on Friday 7/5/24. My mom had an appointment at Kaiser nearby and we had an hour to kill, so instead of going to the nearest Starbucks, my obvious choice was Andersen Bakery nearby. The service is ALWAYS amazing and everyone is always so nice. I did not know that I was going to have the worst service ever that day. I was absolutely shocked by the way my mother and I were treated. I went around 10am, the store was not full at all. I ordered a chicken avocado sandwich + an everything bagel w/ cream cheese. After about 10 minutes, I received the sandwich, but not the bagel. I notified one of the female employees and she immediately grabbed a plain bagel, I corrected her and let her know it was an everything bagel. She handed it to the back kitchen to warm it up. About 5 minutes later, I got up again to check if the bagel was ready. I see the kitchen just now cutting it in half. I waited another 5 minutes and asked the guy (who had initially helped me) and said it's been about 20 minutes that we are waiting for one bagel and cream cheese, can you please check on it? He says: "The toaster is broken. they're figuring out how to fix it. Stop being so impatient". I responded with well we had no idea the toaster was broken otherwise we would have ordered something else. 2 minutes later, he gives the half toasted bagel, with NO cream cheese, no knife. I said could you please give cream cheese and a knife? He says in a very defensive, angry tone: "i don't know why you're yelling at us. The toaster was broken it's not our fault." then he grabs the knife and throws it onto the plate. He began murmuring things under his tone. Watching my mother eat this bagel after she just had a long doctor appointment was so difficult, especially since the guy kept looking at us and he had the most angry face. He made us feel incredibly uncomfortable. This all could have been avoided if he had just said "I apologize for the wait" or "I'm sorry, our toaster was broken but we will fix it for you" with a smile. Instead, he turned hostile and angry real quick. I'm not expecting a refund or anything, I couldn't care less about the $$$. However employees like this will bring your reputation down and turn service away from loyal customers. It's just not right to treat people this way over a bagel lol read more

Great quality of baked goods, at reasonable prices. I've been here many times, but yesterday was the first time I tried the California BLT. Even though I had decided that I would only eat half, it was so delicious that I finished the entire sandwich in one meal. You get to choose your bread and this time I opted for sourdough. Rustic, filling and tasty. This was a good choice to compliment the delicate sprouts. Although there wasn't a large amount of bacon included in the sandwich, with each bite I savored the Applewood bacon. The lettuce, tomato and cucumber were all fresh. For me, $7.75 for this sandwich is reasonably priced. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to add one more slice of bacon :). They have fresh baked bread for purchase and they will slice it for you. In addition to the bread, they offer salads, cakes and other desserts. I bought a mango sponge cake roll , eclair & tiramisu cup the taste was very off & my eclair was stale. I did end up throwing my order to the garbage. Their cake area department does not look fresh seems like they have them sitting there for days I'm really disappointed I had high expectations at this location smh . I am so glad they are open again. I was scared when I heard rumors that they were closed for good. I went there right when it opened and they made my sandwich so fast. I made sure to ask for a pickle and they gave me two. I ate the vegetarian feast 3.5 hours later and it was still amazing! It wasn't soggy at all. The sprouts and cucumber pair well with the toasted whole wheat bread. I came her 2 days in row Day 1 i order the clam chowder bowl. It tasted like their was sand in the soup. The bread on side was good. I had to use the restroom which they keep locked only for customers, this was disappointing as i needed to use it but there was already a customer inside with the key and door locks automatically. Once i did get the key I noticed they had 2 stalls so its bad setup when easily 2 customers can use it. Day 2 i returned to pick up a dessert item for my friends birthday. Again i had to use the bathroom, this time i got in quickly but their lights are motion sensitive. And i got stuck in the pitch black bathroom no light of any kind could not get the motion lights to turn back on and had to fumble in the dark to find my purse which i hung on the door and had my phone where i could finally get some light. Another person or kid could have easily got hurt. The 2nd item that bothered me about this place is I ordered a dessert for my friends birthday and i asked for extra forks to share the dessert and they actually charged me an additional .50 to get the forks to eat an already expensive dessert. Worst experience I ever had. I tried to call multiple times 30 minutes before the store closed, but no one answered, so I decided to make a trip since I was nearby. When I arrived, I saw two cashiers standing there helping one customer. I politely asked if they were responsible for answering the phone and explained that I had tried to call several times but no one answered. They replied, "Well, we are very busy," but it didn't seem that way. Anyway, I placed my order and asked for milk sliced toast, but they both gave me a strange look and said, "We don't have milk sliced toast; we only have milk bread." Trust me, it looked more like sliced toast than bread, but I didn't argue and asked for the milk bread instead. Then I asked for a creamy French roll and for it to be sliced, but when they cut it, they dropped a couple of pieces on the floor. With any common sense, I would have expected them to offer me another creamy French roll since some pieces fell on the ground, but they acted like it was normal without any exchange. I used to loove this place so much but im unsure of what happened to the quality of the food and the service. :( definitely isn't the same anymore. Their tuna sandwich would come with lettuce and sprouts before and now it's just the tuna on your choice of bread. The presentation of the food was rushed as well as there was tuna on the sides when unwrapping my sandwich. They used to always cut the pastries for you so it's easier to eat and sometimes bite sized!! Easy for on the go. Only this time it was just the whole piece of pastry uncut, which is also fine (it still tasted the same!) just again i used to love the presentation and quality of the food. It was my main reason for always coming back, since this is in union city though -- i'll definitely be checking out other sandwich spots closer to me now since the drive is no longer worth it :/ I am happy to know Anderson Bakery is still open though! read more

What a sweet little gem! Have been coming to the shopping center for years and never came in, boy have I been missing out. Execute little bakery that has great hot and cold sandwiches as well as salads and soups. Their newest menu is the tartine! A slice of toast with different topping options and you can't with a cup of soup of your choice. It's perfect because it doesn't leave you stuffed yet you feel full! Customer service is non-existent. All employees have a bad attitude and are non-apologetic about their mess ups. I ordered at 1:30 for pick up at 1:45pm. I got tied up at the store and wasn't able to pickup my food until 2:20pm. I walk in, no greeting, stand at the online pick up, not greeted or acknowledged. 5 minutes pass and THEN my invisibility cloak wore off and they came up to me. Even when he did so, he didn't say hello or anything, I had to start the conversation. I show him my email receipt and he goes up to the counter to ask if they have it. They shrug their shoulders to him and he goes all the way in the back to get a print out and brings it to the front. Then comes out and says "They're working on it now, sorry" In a nonchalant voice. I asked why it's not done and he says "It's not working, but it should be ready in 5 minutes." No dude, it shoulda been ready. It's not busy at all, and there's more workers on the floor than there need to be, I can see the restaurant is dirty and the workers are just standing around talking. Another worker tries to come over and apologize and say the same thing her coworker says, "I'm sorry, it's not working". I explained that if its not working then have the online ordering disabled, she just walked away after I said that. So respectful, I love it. I tried asking their names but both employees laughed and acted like they didn't understand what I said. Thank you for showing how much you care about your customers and that seeing them upset is comical. I won't be returning. Union City Andersen Bakery needs an entire new staff and they have for a long time. The most upsetting thing about this experience is the staff thinking that a customer's upset is a joke AND it wasn't even busy during the time I went. The customer service was great. The bathroom was were my issue was and the reason for the stars, it was absolutely disgusting and needs to be cleaned bad. I noticed a week ago that an employee allowed an older woman to use it upon request. Today, a man asked if he could use it and was rejected. Tsk, tsk. Another minus star for not having any napkins available for the customers. You'll have to ask an employee to grab you some but that's been a challenge because they are busy helping people in line. Today, I had to ask an employee and she looked annoyed with having to help out. Which leads me to the 3rd star deduction, everyone that I've seen working here in the past two weekends have been very unhappy looking and none would even crack a smile. I waited at the front for a minute and then an older white lady walks in and stands right in front of me. A young man working there finally comes to the front and I say I was in line but he proceeds to help the older lady first even though he acknowledged me when I entered the store first. I only realized there is this one Andersen Bakery left in this part of the bay area. I use to go to the one in Newpark Mall and Great Mall all the time pre-covid so pleasantly surprised we still have one in Union City. I've been frequenting this place more recently now in the last few months and I have to say that the weekend staff from say 10am - 1pm is absolutely the best! They get super busy but always have time to take my call for pickup. And they always get the order right in all the rush of lunch hour. I have been by here a lot and never stopped by. I had business to do in the area and decided, why not? Before posting my review, I had to laugh at some of the reviews. Some people are so critical about things that are just out of the employees control. As you walk in, you juice the open welcoming space. All clean and everything in its place. Great job. Great selection of breads and sweets. I realized they had sandwiches, but opted for something sweet and a coffee. I ordered a dulce de leche sliced roll and a almond milk latte. The roll was delicious and not too much. Sometimes you get caramel sweets and after a few bites, you just can't anymore. Not with this one. It was consumed to its entirety. The latte one the other hand was too hot and watery. I am not sure if they add more water than needed to their espresso shot, but I didn't even get any foam. I noticed when she was making the latte, she left the milk steaming, so I assume it is an automatic espresso machine. I basically just got a coffee with milk. Overall, I think this place is a solid 3-4. I will be back to try more sweet baked good and a sandwich. The back end staff seems like they are hard workers and always busy.
