ONE STAR -- GET A SECOND OPINION BEFORE AGREEING TO ANY MAJOR DENTAL WORK HERE…read more I had been a patient at Desert Smiles Dentistry and went in on August 4, 2026 for nothing more than a routine six-month cleaning and X-rays. I left being told that I needed crowns or veneers on my four front teeth because, according to the dentist, I had been "cracking my teeth good" I was shocked. I had Invisalign three years ago, religiously wear my retainers, have always taken excellent care of my teeth, and have never had any significant issues with my front teeth. I've even done teeth modeling because of the appearance of my smile. The dentist pointed out visible lines on my front teeth and specifically told me these were new and that he had never seen them at my previous six-month visit. He then had his front office provide me with a quote for FOUR crowns. I was also told that if I decided to move forward with his proposed treatment plan, I could receive a discount because, ironically, the practice was having "Crown Week" at the end of August. He even told me that another dentist would probably try to convince me to crown my entire upper mouth. Thankfully, I did not agree to anything and immediately sought a second opinion. I was evaluated by another dentist today, and the difference in professional opinion was astounding. She explained that what I had been shown were craze lines -- common lines that naturally develop in teeth over time, similar to wrinkles as we age. She explained that the lines were internal rather than external, told me my teeth were essentially in excellent condition, and said she would not recommend doing anything to them at this time. She further explained that perhaps decades from now, as I reach my 60s or 70s and normal wear progresses, veneers might become an appropriate cosmetic option. She specifically did not recommend crowns on my healthy front teeth now. What makes this even more concerning is that during my 12-year-old daughter's previous routine cleaning at Desert Smiles, we were also told that she needed an expander. She has since been evaluated and treated by an orthodontist and got braces this summer. An expander was never recommended as part of her orthodontic treatment... Recommending four crowns on someone's front teeth is not a minor suggestion. Crowns require permanently altering natural tooth structure. Had I simply trusted this recommendation without questioning it, I could have undergone significant, irreversible dental work that another dentist believes is completely unnecessary. The fact that I was presented with a four-crown treatment plan, given a quote by the front office, and then informed about a "Crown Week" discount only added to my discomfort with the entire experience. Based on my family's experiences, I have completely lost confidence in this practice. I strongly encourage anyone who receives a recommendation here for expensive or invasive dental treatment to get an independent second opinion before agreeing to anything. We will absolutely not be returning to Desert Smiles Dentistry.

I told her that I was her to see about the possibility of a Sleep Apnea mouth piece that I had see on a past card sent out by the office. Let me tell you there is a couch in the waiting room that is gray velvet and dirty with dirty pillows, looks like something you would see in a old Las Vegas hotel, not to mention its about 6 inches off the floor, I might as well set on the floor as most older people like me certainly can't get out of that couch. And then its 115 degrees outside and they have a fake electric fireplace going, like we need to feel warmer. This is not what I would expect of a Dentist office lobby to look like. As im filling out the forms the front staff was still arguing about some staff member there which was very unprofessional. I told her I have the sleep study that my Dr has aleady done and she said to email it to here so she could show it to Lori the Dentist. I sat there for about a half hour and finally a nurse came and got me and said I need to take a picture, which i thought it was just an exray like most dentist do, but come to find out after all said in done it was a CT scan, I was directed back to a room and set in a chair and Lori and some other girl dressed in a black dress came in to see me and they explained the apparatus and she said I was a canidate and she said do you have your sleep study and I told here Lynn had it emailed to the office. I have had a CPAP machine for several months and was seeing about getting something that was easier to use and the post card that was sent in the mail said Some insurances and all medicare plans should cover the entire fee. And I highlight All Medicare Plans. Totally a false statement or a ploy to get money from interested patients seeking the mouth piece. So after she explained it she said I'll call with in the week, and went to leave and I was told I had to pay $275.00 for the CT scan. I was shocked as why I wasn't told about this before hand! So reluctantly I paid for it and went home. I was told the CT scan wasn't covered by my insurance. (False) I think Lynn was to lazy to check my insurance and was more interested in eating her lunch. So after a week I hadn't heard from Lori so I another Dr appointment in the same plaza on Friday the 4th, after that appointment I walked over to Andersen Dentist and there was Lynn setting at the desk, can i get your name, I told her and I said I wasn't here for an appointment that I was here to find out why I hadn't heard from Lori like she had promised and she snapped back at me and said your insurance doesn't cover the mouth piece. I said I want a print out of the statement of the CT scan that she charged me $275 and I said i had called my Insurance Co and they said it was covered 100% and that they see another invoice that Anderson Dental had sent in for another $120 and it was paid for and I had no other resposibilties for that service. I asked Lynn or Melinda why wasn't I told about this $275 cost of this unnecessary procedure, and she said you signed the Truman Document , don't even know what that is but I said could you show a copy, she got pretty snippy with me and I said I would like to see it! She said I can email it to you. I think HEPPA laws prohibit sent that kind of information through email. She said I cant find it right now and I said I'll wait for your. Lynn printed off the statement for the service with the codes on them and gave them to me and I sat and watched her look for the Truman Form that she called it. She then printed a from and then filled it out saying "verbal presetation-patient consented/complete wehre it clearly says Patient signature, date and staff. She said you agreed to the CT scan and I said I did not know anything about this, I said you couldn't even remember my name when I walked in how do you remember me saying I conseted to the CT scan. I said your Lying and you just printed this from and wrote that message on the bottom. I asked to speak to someone and she said Lori was at the other office and she will call me, I said she hasn't called to tell me about the results of the insurance how do you know she will call me. I guess this a scam that Dentist office use to get extra monies, totally unethical way of doing business. That front recepiontist needs and attitude adjustment and a lesson on how to do she job. I'm going to send this to the American Dental Association, also as this is a total misleading advertising and scam to many people .

My son, who is autistic, has some sensory issues and has anxiety about the sounds at a dentist office, but was very comfortable and didn't have an issue at all, even with getting a cavity filled. Dr Kastl is not only very professional, but also kind enough to follow up and call to check on him the next day to make sure he was ok. Their rates are very reasonable compared to what we have been paying in the Phoenix/Scottsdale market.
