We went to Anton's late one night - I'd say maybe 9:30pm. We were going in for a beverage, not for food, so my review is based solely on the bar service and the ambience. As we were a party of six in a basically empty place, we got to really talk to the bartender about what beers we liked and what she recommended. She allowed us little tastes of the beer on tap to make sure we liked what we were ordering. Those that ordered a cocktail were very happy with that as well. We went outside and up to the little upper deck railing to hang out, coming down and inside to the bar for a second beverage as needed. The best part of the evening was when we came downstairs and inside to pay out. There was another couple at the bar who seemed like regulars. The lady started playing the piano and we had an impromptu karaoke sing-a-long to some Elton John. Several songs later, we promised to come back later in the week for food. While I did not go back, several of our group did and they really enjoyed their steak dinners. I can't speak to that night other than to say that they were happy. read more

We had a nice time at Anton's! Our server Caleb was good. Our friends wanted to try Anton's and so did we. They are known for steaks and we were all steaked out, so we opted for other things. We had the shrimp cocktail appetizer and the delicious meatballs. Wow!! My friend and I ordered the Steak Au Poivre. I got mine with pasta as I don't love fries. I was grateful they made the substitution for me. My friend's husband and my wife both got the fresh fish special, which was salmon, potato latkes and broccoli. All were delicious! The Steak Frites (au poivre) was more like a cream sauce. Neither of us could detect any pepper in it. Caleb brought us the pepper grinder and we went to work. Fixed it. Our friend had a house salad she enjoyed. We skipped dessert here and went for gelato, as it was a hot summer night. The restroom area is a little janky and unique. This seems like an odd review for a restaurant that specializes in steak because, this is for a stew and a wonderfully good one at that. I've sat at the bar solo at Anton's and enjoyed a big hearty bowl of oxtail soup for under $10 and left impressed. I have, however, not ordered any steak or such on the menu...nor probably will I when it comes to some of the dismal reviews I've read. Where some things seem overpriced, this beacon of warm hope waits for you, all for under $10. The oxtail was tender and plentiful with huge chunks easily located throughout the loose stew. The soft carrots and potatoes were simple, but only needed some pepper from me. There were big pieces of onion, just how I like them and dark colorful leafy greens. It wasn't necessarily the ingredients that made the soup standout it was the tender love and care that seemed to go into making it that I tasted. It was something like my grandma would make, or like my dear friend from Kenya, who I miss, used to make. This dish did what great food should always do, it brought back memories and fed the soul. I may not return to Anton's for the reasons it prides itself on, its steak or its butcher shop however, I sure will be back for this stew. read more

The place had that classic steakhouse swagger the second we walked in. Dark wood, the hum of country music playing just loud enough to remind you you're in Kansas City, and a bar lined with enough local taps to make you believe the city could run on beer alone. KC supporting KC -- the way it should be. Rachel was behind the bar, the kind of bartender who carries the place on her shoulders without making a show of it. She was busy, sure, but she didn't rush. Instead, she leaned in and gave us the kind of intro every first-timer deserves: what they do, what they stand for, and where to look for the good stuff. She pointed out the butcher counter like it was sacred ground, ran through happy hour, and somehow still made it feel like we had her full attention. A real bartender's bartender -- no frills, no nonsense, just genuine care. Drinks hit the bar fast. Mine came on strong with lemon -- a little too strong. Tart enough to drown the balance that should've been there. My partner's was a bruiser, the kind of cocktail that hits you first and apologizes later. Let me first say I generally don't leave reviews. However after a very rude phone call from the manager I feel inclined to leave a review. We made a reservation and yes we did arrive approximately 30 minutes early 5:30 versus 6:00. Checked in and was told they would check on our table which was fine. We would have been happy to have waited at the bar and had drinks however we were seated which was very nice but we were not informed that our server was not going to be available for another 30 minutes. She took 1/2 our drink orders and walked away no explanation. 20 minutes later came back took a couple more and then a couple more. But never relayed that she was "in the weeds" and just left us unattended. After another 20 minutes she took our appetizer order which when delivered was incomplete. Had to flag her down to get her attention to take our meal order. Never asking if anyone would like another beverage or even refilling our water. Food finally arrives staggered at best and please note that when I ordered the daily special I specifically asked if the Prime Rib was available at medium rare she said yes. When it arrived it was medium well to well done and looked like shoe leather. The last straw. I asked to speak to a manager just to let them know what was happening and how disappointed we were. I NEVER asked for any rebate just letting them know what was happening. When I received the bill they had reversed the prime rib but had charged for the white wine 3 times when only one was ordered. And added a standard server charge for a party of 8. I admit I did not add any additional tip to the bill. As the service and food were both less than what should be expected from a restaurant where the average meal is $70 per person. The reason for this review is because about an hour later I get a call from the manager demanding that I come in and pay the server $150 in cash because she worked hard. Then proceeded to tell me that I have been band from ever coming in again which is absolutely not a problem because trust me I will never darken their doors again. I have worked in the service industry for over 35 years and have a compassion for people in the industry and generally over tip. But I have never had anyone not even listen to what my experience was before demanding I compensate someone for an unacceptable experience. We went to Anton's for my husband's birthday. Our server was new and we had no issues with her. Overall, our main dishes were satisfying but we had some issues here and there. My husband's 18 oz steak came on a way-too-small plate and his steak potatoes were over-baked. The main problem came when we ordered our dessert - the apple crisp. It was barely above body temp and the apples themselves actually tasted like nothing. No spices, no sweetness and the crisp tasted more like granola. The best part of the dessert was the ice cream. We came for a work event and we're able to sit a large party at a very kate notice. Service was wondeful and the food was delicious. I do agree with the other reviews that the food comes on plates that seem to small however the quantity is very good, they are full plates. I ordered my steak medium rare and I feel like it came out a bit more well done that it should have but it was still tasty. I also got the lobster Mac and Cheese, Im.not sure there was lobster and it was a little.on the salty side. The Spumoni ice cream was amazing. Happened in (the first time) as Anton's was within sight of our hotel on a blustry day. So glad my colleague and I did. Great lunch with oxtail soup and riblets all served with friendly attention. Next time was a team appreciation supper during a recent trade show at KCCC. Again, great steaks, well prepared and delicious. Finally supper on my own on the last night in town - triple score! Repurposed building is interesting too with a "skylight' to the 2nd floor. When I return to KC, if I only eat one place it'll be here. read more

We went to the KC Wheel actually for a yelp event tonight, and wanted to grab some grub after having a good time playing initially golf. Show up at Anton's at 9:30pm, as their website, Google, yelp etc all show they are open until midnight. Walk in the door and get turned away by the two employees sitting at the bar that say they are closed - over 2 hours before their listed operation hours. Was extremely excited to finally try this place, but I dont think ill be back to ever try it. First off the service was great! Brie was such a great waitress. The bone marrow is not to be skipped. It's something you will dream about. We also got the potato skins for an app and they were good but nothing to write home about. Skip the side. The potato wedges are too big to enjoy honestly. It's like biting into a baked potato. The garlic mash was good but nothing you don't get anywhere else. Skip the lobster Mac. It was bland cream sauce with a couple chunks of lobster and some old bay sprinkled on top. Both of us got Kc strips. When I say Anton's used to be my favorite steak place I'm not kidding. The cut of meat was still quality but the meat was overcooked and dry. I hate writing this review because I used to rave about Anton's but at this point unless you're downtown it's not anything exceptional to try anymore. So we throughly enjoyed our stay in Kansas City MO. The waitresses at Anton's made us feel welcome and valued. The menu offers a nice selection with happy hour specials and daily specials. They have a nice selection of beers on tap. We had the steak soup - very good, ox tail soup - very good,, potato skins - okay, Philly steak - very good, chicken wings - real chicken wings so big but good.. special thanks to Rachel and Bree for making our dining excellent. We ordered a KC strip steak that was extremely disappointing. It was so tough it couldn't be cut with a steak knife, and the two bites we managed to take were full of gristle. When we brought this to the staff's attention, we were offered a "complimentary" $12 dessert, but were still charged $46 for the inedible steak. When we raised concerns, the manager--who refused to provide his name--told us there was nothing he could do because we had accepted the dessert. I explained that we accepted the dessert under the assumption it was in addition to removing the steak from our bill. His response was simply, "Don't make assumptions." When we asked to speak with the owner, we were told we were "harassing" him. The manager's tone was dismissive and unprofessional throughout the interaction. We spent nearly $400 that evening. While a poorly prepared steak is unfortunate, it could have been resolved with basic customer service. I never like to post negative reviews on here but we were really disappointed with our experience at Anton's!! After arriving at 5:30, we weren't seated for about 10 minutes, even with a reservation. Once we were seated, it took quite a while just to place our drink and food order. The biggest issue was timing. Our drinks took an hour to arrive. We were upfront in the beginning about needing to leave by 7 and she assured us that if we placed our food order right then, we would have our food in time. Unfortunately, by 6:45 there was still no food and we were not about to eat our meal in 10 minutes! When we asked to cancel our order so we could make it to our next commitment, the response from our server felt rude and dismissive. To make matters worse, multiple tables around us were experiencing the same delays and also ended up getting up and leaving. We understand restaurants get busy, but communication, pacing, and customer service really matter--especially when guests are upfront about time constraints. The 16oz KC Strip was solidly average, nothing to write home about and probably not $46 good. We also got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and carrots. The carrots did seem to be undercooked and we were surprised there was no glaze or anything on top of the meatloaf. It looked more like two ribs when it was served but did taste good, solid 7/10. We sat near the door on a brisk night and things seemed a bit cramped. Our waitress was new and didn't know the menu options well. The sapphire gin and tonic was top notch though! Two hours before our reservation, I received a call to confirm that we would still be attending. Upon our arrival, we struggled to find parking; it was almost impossible. This was my first complaint. Our friends' wife checked in for the reservation since they arrived first. When I got there, I was taken aback to find that our table was located in the kitchen of the restaurant! Yes, you read it right! (see video) When our server came to the table, I expressed my disappointment regarding our seating. He chuckled and briskly walked away, never to return. After discussing our unsatisfactory seating situation, we decided to leave. I went to the bar (since there was no host) to inform someone that we were leaving due to our dissatisfaction. The bartender took my name to locate my reservation and simply said, "Okay." She never asked if we would like to be seated somewhere else, and I didn't ask either! I figured that if she didn't offer, then she clearly didn't care that we were leaving. I will never return to this restaurant, nor would I recommend it to anyone else. The customer service was extremely poor, and what kind of restaurant seats customers in the kitchen? They could have informed me about the kitchen seating when they called to confirm my reservation, or at least notified us when we arrived. They will ask if its there when clearly its not. I get better ranch from the McDonald's. The bread took too long we had to cancel it. (Mind you, we are sitting at the bar). Took 15 minutes for salad. We did not want to eat our bread with the steak. with staff standing around not doing anything. One bar tender for the whole place. She needed help, and everyone and 4 staff are standing around the bar doing nothing. And playing with the cutlery. The KC strip had a bone in it. Why? Your guess is as good as mine Tough oh so stuff. And dry. I ordered medium. And got medium well. No seasoning. Gristle filled tendon filled meat! I have had better steaks at red lobster or applebees. They need to fire the cooks and get a chef. If I could rate a zero I would. We did a birthday pub crawl last Saturday and Anton's was our third stop . We had such great experiences leading up to Anton's! We walked in and immediately could tell the bartenders were stressed and not happy to be there. After a considerable wait at the bar for a drink we asked for the wine list and ordered off of it. The bartender said he was sick of the list not being updated and slammed around a few more things in his fury of having to be there. The female bartender was just as unhappy. I asked him to pour me a Provence Rose and we asked for a Cabernet - as both things we ordered were not available. The AiX rose being one. Total wine has hundreds of cases ! The worst part was when I said we were ready to go- half of us never got a drink and the ones that did could not even drink the wine ( horrible) the bartender asked who was getting the check and I said I will. I did say to him that I will pay, but the wine and service were bad. At that he picked up our wine glasses and hurled against the wall ( smashing them) and yelled for us to " Get Out"! He followed us out to the front and said he was going to call the police ( we said great) and that we were drunk and disorderly ( we weren't- not even close) and basically just totally lost it. Everyone in the bar and restaurant were shocked. If you hate your job, don't work there! He actually scared us and we felt like he might strike one of us. Never stepping foot in your place again! I have been here for happy hour and had good experiences. My wife and I were here after Christmas and I believe there was a staffing problem. Since we didn't have a reservation they sat us at the end of the bar where the staff gathered. They were oblivious to us and we felt all their pain and heard their discussions that customers should not be subjected to. The bartender was so overextended and no one was helping her. Even the manager in charge was was more concerned with young staff that seemed to be training. We ordered drinks and bread service. The bread did not arrive until we were almost done with main courses. The wedge salad was excellent. Our filets were heavily charred on the outside and crusty. I didn't enjoy that and have to say that Outback does a better job for a fraction of the cost. The baked potato was severely overdone. Had brown over cooked spots in the middle and it was served with what looked like cheese whiz on top. 200 dollars was never so disappointing. Felt bad for the bartender so left a good tip. I was very disappointed with my experience this establishment. We came with a large group and our party was separated across the restaurant. I was seated at a table with 2 people. We asked if we could move the tables closer together to be with our party and was told no by our server, we started with the wedge salad and potato skins. The wedge salad was tasty but was not cut into a wedge as expected. The salad ratio was off with lots of purple onion and very little lettuce. The potato skins were crispy and served in a butter sauce with a sour cream dip. We split the bone in rib eye cooked medium rare. The first steak we were served was very tough and dry and we had to send it back because we could not chew it. They prepared a second steak for us that was better but still didn't seem to be a high quality cut of meat. They did make a custom margarita with mezcal which was my favorite item. When we got the bill, I noticed we had a $2 spit charge for the salad and 20% gratuity for being in a large party even though we were seated at a separate table of 2 no where near our other people in our party, I did request that the $2 split charge be removed as that seemed very petty on a $200 bill. Had a reservation last night, NYE, party was a group of 5. Wait staff were very accommodating towards our reservation and our waitress did a fine job. My two major complaints were the dirty and unpolished wine and water glasses placed on the table. All 5 of us had lipstick marks around the glassware. Second complaint goes toward the food, luckily none of us were real hungry but I did split their pasta of the day, which was a steak pesto pasta with green and red bell pepper. It came out looking and tasting like a soup with little to no flavor. Same thing towards their side of smoked Gouda bacon Mac... couldn't taste any flavor from a Gouda standpoint. Had dinner here before a show at the Kauffman. We always try to find a good place to eat that is within walking distance, so this fit the bill and we had been several times in the past and remember enjoying it. Turns out we had a very different experience back then. We were very disappointed with this visit. They offer casual dining and fine dining. I opted for fine dining when I made the reservation; however, when we showed up, our table was in the bar (casual dining) which wouldn't have been bad, except that it was right in front of the door. Our waitress was not very knowledgeable about the menu, but she was pleasant. The food was disappointing. At 5:30, they were already out of salmon, so our friends had to come up with second choices. I ordered the fish special and at $33, I was expecting more. The trout was not seasoned and the Brussels sprouts were not well cooked or seasoned. Hubby had the 1/2 pound burger and it was the smallest 1/2 pound burger we have seen. It's a shame they are missing the mark and I know we will not return when there are so many better choices out there. read more

Anton's was once a great Kansas City steakhouse. I ate there tonight and was shocked. I've had better service and steaks at a much better price at Outback Steakhouse. Our server didn't know anything about the menu. For example, the prices for sides were listed as single/family style (7/14). I asked to make sure that was the case and they said there was only one size and those weren't prices, they were dates. I knew that was wrong so asked another server who clarified that they were indeed prices. Our server also didn't know if the KC strip was bone in and she said no, that's the ribeye. They did indeed have a bone in ribeye, as well as boneless, but the only strip was bone in (the definition of a KC strip). This may not seem like a big deal to some, but when the steaks are $50-$100 each, I want to know what I am getting. Unfortunately, my prime KC Strip was tough and gristly. Not a prime steak. Not even close. If you are looking for a good steak in KC, go somewhere else. There are plenty of fine steakhouses here, including several Outback locations. read more
