This company is a nightmare! The tools their movers use, are like pocket toys to play with. They have, but do not use large boxes. They do not have big moving carts, but carry every piece of your stuff separately. Movers do not pay attention to fragile, breakable items. They do not read/understand labels, and cover fragile pieces with heavy furniture. They do not have/use doorstoppers wasting time reopening each door. In general, they are very slow. It took them 9 hours to complete the same job, which a Chinese moving company did for me within two hours, two years ago. Unfortunately, these people are no longer in moving business, but they made enough money to open a better one. Employees of the Local Moving Company, also known as Ararat Moving, did not make a lunch break, causing them to work even slower in the afternoon. They said it was their normal practice because the business owner did not pay for it, so they asked my advice: "Can they charge the client for the break?" because "they would like to take a break." Seriously? Edgar, the manager and possibly the owner of the company, introduced himself as an eccentric, unstable person. He yelled at me when I said the movers worked very slowly and sent me a photo from his track, showing my stuff thrown in a big heap. Suddenly, in the middle of unloading, he demanded to pay the entire amount in cash immediately, threatening to take away the rest of the furniture. I had to call the police to continue unloading because I didn't have enough cash. Because the movers did not pack the furniture properly, they broke some fragile stuff, and damaged two very expensive items: an Italian white genuine leather sofa and an American solid wood dining table. They later advised their insurance would cover 60 cents per pound. (Should I weight the broken furniture?) When I called the insurance, they asked to contact the manager directly. However, as aforementioned, manager's behavior was not something you would like to deal with. Such rudeness, harshness, and unprofessionalism became the worst moving experience of my life. read more

Without a doubt, worth every last penny. SF local movers arrived within the promised window and immediately started working. Efficiency is expected and always appreciated, but their friendliness was more helpful than they could have imagined. Moving is emotional and having these guys present helped keep emotions in check and spirits high. I know their manager, Edgar, was checking in behind the scenes ensuring everything moved smoothly, and move smoothly it did. Having never hired a professional moving company before, I was skeptical on quality and integrity, and I was blown. away. I hope I don't need to move again, but if I did and to anyone else I know moving, I will absolutely recommend North Star. Owner was helpful and professional from the time he arrived to give an estimate. The bedroom furniture was so large it had to go out the bedroom window, so his team had to hoist it to their truck. One piece wouldn't even fit out the window and they had to use the door access from my bathroom (century home). I don't think it was as easy as he was hoping, but movers were extremely cheerful and professional. Even with the snags, everything was on the truck in a little over an hour. These guys helped my wife and I move within SF limits and they were wonderfully efficient and accommodating. We had some unexpected delays with our move and they worked with us to find another time that would work. We packed a lot of the stuff ourselves, but on move day they came and helped take care of the odds and ends that still needed to be packed up. And they took great care with our furniture and walls. I ended up helping with a bit of the move myself, to keep things moving along and trying to keep the pricing down, and they were completely supportive.
