My girlfriend and I are new to the area and didn't honestly know what to expect on long island as we usually had eaten in manhattan. After reading several reviews about Arata we decided to try it. The staff was so friendly and helpful in explaining the menu. I had a spicy seafood soup to start that was excellent and then we tried the chefs special five piece assortment and it was really very good- no need to add any sauce it was already on top and each piece was delicious. Aside from that, we had some yellowtail, sea urchin, and tuna sashimi that was excellent. And lastly we had the ice cream desert special which was also very good. We've been hearing about Arata for a while, but ever since it's been on Restaurant Hunter, it moved to the top of our list. It's very close to the Syosset train station, so that is very convenient for an after work stop for those commuters out there. We sat at the sushi bar but didn't interact much with the sushi chefs. I have to say, I really liked this place. It is a very tight space, but the food was really good. We got the Arata special 5 pcs. Each piece was better than the next. All the sauces were so delicious. We also ordered a couple of rolls. Believe it or not, the one that stood out the most was a simple Peanut/Avacado. I have never ordered this roll, but I saw it on someone's review and I say, what the heck. It was so simple, but so good. Who new this was a classic roll? This place is a bit far for us, but we were in the neighborhood so we gave it a shot. I have to say it is a storefront in a strip mall and very dart, so you really can't tell from the outside what it was. Very dark inside too. We have been here a number of times and must say they steal the spot of our favorite sushi on the Island. We have sat at both the sushi bar and tables and always have great service but we prefer the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are so friendly and kind and always make great suggestions. The quality of the food is top notch and the flavors of all of their rolls are fantastic. We love getting the 5 or 10pc omakase, they know how to make some great flavors and sushi. We also loved their lotus root topped with tuna, so yummy! I would say our favorite specialty roll is the Daniella roll. We ordered take out the other night and it was amazing. For rolls we ordered: Daniela, eel cucumber, spicy tuna, California and salmon avocado. We also ordered their chirashi which is finely cut sashimi over sushi rice which came with a miso soup. What I love about arata is how incredibly fresh their fish is and how delicious their sashimi is. I highly recommend getting their sushi/ sashimi for a nice treat. They use high quality ingredients and everything is prepared expertly. Went here for a second time after many years. I have not been disappointed either time. First time I went around dinner time- busy but not a terrible wait! This time we went around lunch time on a weekday- perfectly fine. My husband was so impressed with how fresh the sushi was! I kept saying such great things about Arata Sushi to him & he definitely agrees! The restaurant was very clean & the staff was very friendly. They make sure everything is great. I'm giving this 5 stars based on the food and service alone. If you want to be a star snob you can minus a star because the restaurant is small and cramped, I however am sticking with the 5 star rating. The service here is wonderful, we walked in at 6:30ish on a Friday night with no reservations and with some finagling around the host and hostess or manager were able to seat us. They did tell us that we had approximately 45 min because there were many reservations, no problem! The waiter was very nice and took his time to explain the menu. We went with his suggestion and ordered the 5 piece something or other, I can't remember the name but it is on the very first page of the menu. Since we ordered it to share he brought it with 6 pieces so we could each have 3! This was so good, it just melts in your mouth! Then we got a long dish with more, just look at my pictures and you will see what it is. I also got a salmon skin hand roll and another roll with tuna on top of crispy rice. We've been to many MANY sushi restaurants around Long Island that have been good to great. Hmm. Not sure how to handle this place. Our first time there, too. Possibly last. The food was decent, what my family could eat of it. We ordered our rolls, soup, and appetizers. I had no issues with what I ordered. Issue was with the rest of the family. They ordered the rolls and a Kani salad. Then advised that my wife cannot have mushrooms and we weren't sure about the kids, yet. We then were advised that just about everything we ordered, even the miso soup and Kani salad, had mushrooms. The rolls they wanted, had mushrooms, just about everything they tried to order, possibly had mushrooms. As stated, we've been to many sushi places, and never experienced miso soup, Kani salad, and just about every roll, having mushroom in it. Was told it may be in something that is put into the rolls, or soup, and they could not make anything without mushroom. Really? They tried to be safe about it, but basically that would mean their entire menu would not be able to be ordered by my family. We tell every place we go to, about their allergies, and they all were able to accommodate. They substituted, or custom made the rolls. Sushi in NYC doesn't even have any issues. Still. Just wow. Guess if people have any type of sensitivities, they just need to avoid the place. read more

Stellar service during a busy Saturday night dinner seating. My party of two made a reservation, and judging by the lack of available tables in the small dining room, you should too. I have been to enough sushi places to understand the main reason to come here is the fairly priced and very creative Omakase, known here as Arata Style Sushi. Aside from this awesome menu offering (which I was instructed to eat from left to right and down, like reading a book), the rest of the menu looks much like any other local sushi joint. Looks can be deceiving because, of the three signature rolls we tried (Tuna Whopper being one of them), all were nicely executed, well presented and (thankfully) not drenched in sauces or spackled with Tobiko. I recommend, as our server did, that you avoid any temptation to dip your meal in soy sauce, spicy mayo, or whatever. Enjoy the flavors as presented to you. As an aside, I recommend the Vegetable Goyza (steamed) as a delicious inexpensive appetizer. Light, tasty and served with a great dipping sauce. I set my sights on and enjoyed the "rice beer" served in 17oz bottles. But if you are a Sake fan, your options are limited to about 8 or so cold selections and the ever-present Hot Sake. We ordered the Kani salad. Probably better with a bit less crunch, the tuna Poke -perfect. Large pieces of avocado and the tuna was very fresh. The chefs selection was superb. Especially the tuna and tomato. A must have. We had seconds. The American Standard roll and Soba roll were delicious and beautifully presented. I have been looking for another sushi place to replace my other favorite sushi place while it is being renovated. After trying Arata Sushi it will definitely be more then just a temporary spot! The quality of the sushi is very very fresh and the prices are reasonable. The outside is very plain and you would never know that you are going to get quality sushi until you step inside, don't be discouraged by the exterior. Also, you must call ahead, we came by on a Friday night and had to wait an hour just to sit at the sushi bar. It's quite small and it gets packed so before you make the trek I would call ahead. The yellowtail jalapeño is very good and comes with about six pieces. We shared three of the special rolls all of them delicious. If you like tuna go for the tuna whopper it's filled with different style tuna! The arata maki roll is also delicious.
