I think I've found my favorite sushi place in SLO! The sushi is fresh and plated nicely. We enjoyed the super dragon roll, sushi and sashimi, and the salmon skin salad. We ordered the lunch combinations, so they came with salads and miso soup. All delicious! The restaurant is in a nice location in downtown SLO. And Ariel, our sushi chef was really fun. I want to start by saying the restaurant itself was great. The food was really good, the service was friendly, and overall the dining experience was exactly what I hoped for--especially since i was out with a friend. No complaints at all about the staff or the meal. The problem came afterward. After we finished eating, we decided to walk downtown to meet a friend at a nearby restaurant before heading back. We got back around 12:45 PM and my car was already gone--towed from the restaurant's parking lot. Technically, there is a sign posted in the middle of the parking lot that says no parking between 11 PM and early morning hours (I think 7 or 8 AM). But the sign is not easy to notice unless you walk right up to it. It's not visible from most spots in the lot, especially at night, and it definitely wasn't clear enough to warn customers who just finished dining there. I totally understand if a business needs to manage non-customer parking, but towing paying customers right after they finish eating--especially with barely noticeable signage--felt extremely frustrating and really put a damper on the night. Great restaurant, great staff, really good food... but the towing policy and poor visibility of the sign are something people should be aware of before parking there. $645 to take it out that same night... read more

My partner and I arrived to SLO and wanted sushi that evening and saw the good reviews of Arigato Sushi so we wanted to check it out! We arrived around 7PM with a wait time of around 10-15 minutes. We were able to choose our seats afterwards and there was a good variety of options of appetizers, rolls, and sashimi. We ordered the regular edamame, aged dashi tofu (not Agadashi tofu in this case), salmon nigiri, cut salmon roll, and the Chef Charashi. The fish was fresh, the sauce that came with the tofu was good - similar to a vinegar fish sauce and the tofu was crunchy. The restaurant was clean and had a nice ambience. Incredibly unassuming being located in a strip mall. But, aren't some of the best places unassuming and tucked away? It was a Saturday night in August in this college town and my boyfriend found Arigato on Yelp so we decided to check it out! Parking is easy because -- strip mall. There were a few patrons in for dinner and they have a cool, sushi bar to watch the chefs create their masterpieces. We opted to sit at a two-seater table by the sushi bar so we could watch at a distance. We had a young waiter who was so sweet but may have been new and was a bit clumsy with the forgetfulness (but he gets a pass, it's hard when you're new and we weren't in a rush)! We Definitely got far too much food but it was all delicious from the veggie tempura to our own helpings of the Philly roll to an avocado roll. Yum! I had a Diet Coke, he had Sprite. We came here on a Sunday night and were seated immediately at a table by the sushi bar. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food came out quick. Great spot for takeout, or even a casual date night/ group dinner. We ordered two rolls from the "All Day Happy Hour" menu which ranged from $9.99 to $11.99, and also ordered a specialty roll. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of everything we ordered, especially considering the reasonable prices. The fish tasted super fresh and we loved the crunchy texture of the Red Hot Night Roll and the Super Dragon Roll. We ordered 2 miso soups, 1 order of edamame, 3 sushi rolls, and a beer for only $55. I've came and eaten at Arigato many times since my first review and sadly, I've just gotten more disappointed everytime I visit. This time, we made a reservation for a party of 11 (only 10 came). It was pretty busy and so we already kind of knew how the service was going to be. We had to stand for a little bit maybe 7 minutes before getting seated and then we didn't get menus until about 15 minutes after being seated. The server then came to us and let us know that it took awhile to get menus because there weren't available but it would've been nice to be updated because we were all just confused. Eventually we got our menus and ordered. Our food took so long to come out and the sushi was already cold (some were baked and would've been nice to eat is hot). Then one of the sushi rolls got mixed up with another table and so one of my friends didn't get his second one until it was time to pay for the bill. The servers didn't ask how our food was, if we needed anything else (we had to get up and get our soy sauce for ourselves as well). This is a casual restaurant with reasonably priced and surprisingly good sushi. We just tried the rolls, king spider, king dragon, baked shellfish, and some others, but they were all good, esp the baked shellfish, which was warmed and tasted very good. Service was responsive and good too, checking in on how the food was, filling our water glasses, and seeing if we wanted to order more food. The flavor was good, not overly seasoned, and not at all bland. It's located in a fairly non-descript strip mall type location, and there are aspects of it that are a little worn down, but you're there to eat, not sightsee, so it's all fine. I'd recommend this place, and while I'm not snobby about sushi, I do know the difference between fairly cheap, mediocre sushi that doesn't satisfy and places that offer satisfying food at a fair price, and this is definitely the latter. read more

The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was fun, celebratory and the lighting was really nice. Everyone around us seemed super into the food so I was excited to order something fun. I ordered the chefs choice sashimi and nigiri plate, which was only about $26. I had heard really good things about the food and the chef in particular at this restaurant so I went chefs choice. My husband ordered two of the happy hour rolls about $9 each. First came the salad and miso which were wonderful, the simple salad was honestly such a nice dressing I wanted to ask what was in it. The miso soup was perfect. We sat and had a beer, we could watch the chefs make the sushi while we waited which was fun and added to the atmosphere. The food arrived, the presentation was really nice. The chefs choice plate had so much beautiful fresh fish honestly such it was a bargain. I got to try lots of new kinds of fish and found a new favorite. The rolls my husband ordered were huge. The flavors were wonderful. Everything was unbelievably delicious. This is the kind of sushi restaurant where the quality is so high you can be confident ordering anything. The beer was cold and big enough to split, all the food was fantastic. It's just that Jamie W. and I were more than pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here. We really didn't go by anybody's recommendation to try it. We just pointed at it on our last evening in San Luis Obispo and thought it might satisfy our need for a lighter bite after gorging on tri-tip salad, smoked salmon tacos, and Black Forest cake. Fortunately not in the same place. All the tables were well spaced, and we luckily got the table next to the front window even though there was just the parking lot to look at. Just passing through SLO and happened to come across this hidden gem. We had a party of five and dined indoors. Hand sanitizers readily available at the register... multiple bottles. GARLIC EDAMAME Appetizer. Basic edamame dressed in what tasted like a garlicky sriracha sauce. Not a lot of heat, more of a vinegary sriracha flavor. Grazed on this and it was good. SALMON TERIYAKI Lunch Special. I ordered the salmon teriyaki lunch special, which came with an approximate 6oz filet in a ginger teriyaki glaze. Sauce was good, but salmon too overcooked for my taste. I like mine medium and flakey. The lunch special comes with a cup of miso soup, salad, and mixed tempura in a three-compartment bento box. MISO Soup. Nothing special, just your basic miso soup. Mild flavor with seaweed. SALAD. Mixed spring greens with shredded carrots and some iceberg lettuce. Dressing was pretty good. Tasted like it was ponzu-based. TEMPURA. Mixed tempura was nicely done. Various veggies lightly coated in tempura. Plus a shrimp tempura, which was a nice surprise. PRICES. Happy hour all day errrrryday? Yes, please. Honestly this is some ridiculously cheap sushi and sashimi. Who has lunch specials everyday??? Full rolls for $7.99? Will def stop by again my next time in SLO to try Arigato's chirashi. We checked out Arigato due a hankering for Japanese good and the good Yelp reviews. I wish that I liked it a bit more. It seemed as if they were understaffed - who isn't now? The restaurant also has an "oily" smell, probably due to lack of sufficient kitchen ventilation. The Mrs. and I had the dinner combos. The salad and tempura were fine. The sesame chicken was good, almost karage like but with a soy based sauce. The teriyaki chicken was the real disappointment. Teri chicken isn't hard. Heck, the local Panda Express does a decent Teri chicken. At Arigato, it was thin and dry. I had a salmon skin handroll. It was ok, would have been good if the salmon skin was warm, not cool/lukewarm. We also ordered three sushi rolls - the Super Dragon, TNT and Oceans 11. The Super Dragon and TNT were good. The Oceans 11 was funky with salmon pieces (not sushi slices, but chunks) and veggies on top. I think it was supposed to be spicy, but didn't pick up a lot of spice. The rolls were all on their all day happy hour so a good value at $9.99 or less. I'd say 3-1/2 stars for the rolls, 2 to 3 for the dinner combos and 3 stars overall. read more
