I came in on a random Tuesday afternoon so the establishment wasn't too busy but there was consistent traffic off individuals coming in and leaving. The space was clean and tidy, not a ton visually to note. The staff was friendly, attentive, and seated us immediately. They took the time to explain how the all you can eat menu works as it was our first time there, gave us a few moments to decide while they brought us water, and then took our order with the chosen menu. Quick efficient and organic interactions The menu was pretty extensive ranging from vegan rolls, nigiri, tempura, baked rolls, appetizers and more for 90 minutes. If I were to go again, I think I would consider the menu slightly differently. I either ordered a lot of may and dairy items or that those ingredients were used frequently through the rolls we ordered. I will say if you like that kind of creamy, then you'll love this spot. For me it was a bit overwhelming and made for a slightly "sick" experience of sushi over a "fresh" one. read more

This is my first time giving them a try. I did not have a great experience last time coming in... it resulted in us not being able to get a table because they decided to close early due to having one party. I am not one to give one a bad first opinion without giving them a try so I had to come back and I did. Once again I was pretty disappointed, not only with the good but as well as service. They took an absurd about of time to come and just get our drink order an once they did it just got worse. Took them even longer for us to be able to place some appetizers in. Once we finally got both... disappointing we ordered some jalapeño bombs, they were the tiniest things ever. Two jalapeño's cut in half to make four pieces . They completely forgot about us for almost the rest of the night. There was a group of three who sat in front of us and we watched as they received all their plates. Once our server finally came around to talk to us... it was her telling us if we wanted anything else because it was last call. We mentioned yes we still wanted to order actual plates. She looked confused and completely shocked and replied that " oh you guys wanted to order food " as in she thought we only wanted appetizer and drinks. Which was pretty upsetting considering we did not get checked up on once since we had gotten our appetizer and drinks. (yes we tried waving them down and looking for them to get some food in) We have finally received our food and well pretty decent nothing crazy to them, very small amount for the price as well they weren't wrapped up nicely. Each piece would fall apart pretty quickly. Just left dissatisfied and disappointed as well still hungry. We also were rejected on being able to get the all you can eat bundle because it was too "late ". While we had a table to our right who was doing so as we were sat down. The kids were craving sushi, so we decided to give Shin's Sushi a try. They offer an all-you-can-eat menu with three different pricing tiers, which sounded like a great idea. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. The biggest issue was the service. Everything took forever. Our first order took forever to arrive, it took forever before anyone came back to take our second order, and then it took forever for that second round of sushi to make it to the table. For an all-you-can-eat restaurant, that's a pretty big problem because you're spending more time waiting than eating. To make matters worse, if you're a party of six, they automatically add gratuity. Normally I don't mind tipping for good service, but in this case, the service definitely didn't earn it. I also ordered a beer. Funny enough, they had no problem adding it to the bill, but somehow never managed to bring me the actual beer. We had to point it out before paying. As for the sushi...it was just mid. Nothing really stood out, and even my kids who are usually pretty easy to impress when it comes to sushi, weren't impressed. If your goal is simply to stuff your gills with unlimited, average sushi and you don't mind spending a lot of time waiting, this may be your place. I was visiting SLO and found this sushi restaurant that I enjoyed overall. Had I known they have all you can eat available, perhaps my group and I would have come more prepared! Instead we got a few rolls, and I got the katsu donburi. The picture doesn't do it justice--this bowl was enormous and you get TONS of rice. The katsu itself was decent, nothing amazing but not bad by any means either. The rolls were also pretty good. The staff was kind and friendly, though service was a bit slow at times. We got water and tea fast as well then it took a little bit for the waiter to come back and get our order. Not a huge deal as the food came out in a timely manner. Lunch Sushi combo- I was really looking forward to it but, maybe I'm a sushi snob, the ratio of rice to fish was pretty awful. I've never seen fish cut extra long for nigiri and the rice was the smallest little blob that would fall apart. There was also a lot of wasabi. It was burning my nose and you just didn't taste anything else. The fish wasn't bad but also not the best nigiri quality. Finally, the California roll portion was crazy big and I figure that's where the rice went because holy rice ball. This does come with miso and a cucumber salad which both were nice. Traveled into SLO for work and after having driven over 5 hours to get there, decided to treat myself to some AYCE Sushi. The restaurant itself is pretty casual and there were a lot of college students so I assume it is near the college. I was a bit taken a back by the AYCE pricing as I wasnt familiar with the tiered pricing which was different from other AYCE sushi I've been to. I was surprised that you needed to get the highest tier to get the nigiri I guess at about $4 a piece when purchased a la carte, the AYCE is still a deal. I got the highest tier and I can say that the quality was actually pretty good! For AYCE, I was impressed by how fresh everything looked, the signature roles were unique and had premium fish and other ingredients. The rice was well cooked and they didn't over pack the sushi with it. The presentation of the roles were also really well done, better than some more expensive a la carte sushi restaurants I've been to. Overall, the food really hit it out of the park. The lobster roll, snow crab roll, nigiri, and specialty Sashimi were all of my favorites from what I had ordered and are only available on the highest tier. If you are a big fan of raw fish, highly recommend getting the top tier, if you're more into simple rolls or just rolls in general, the low and mid tier would be just fine. The service was a bit awkward to begin with as I was seated at the sushi bar but was told to make orders through the server and not the sushi chef which was a little weird since he was working right in front of me. Eventually I just started to order from the chef and it was a much easier experience. The chefs were super friendly and really made sure I had a good experience. Since I was dining by myself, they were gracious enough to make a few of the rolls as Hand-rolls instead which is something g they might normally do if they're really busy. All in all, I had a really good experience at this restaurant and I would highly recommend giving the top tier AYCE a try as that really is where the best menu items are (if you like raw fish). read more

Went to Shin's Sushi for a birthday dinner. All but 2 of us wanted the all-you-can-eat option and was told when seated that if we sat towards the end of the table, we would not have to also have to do the all-you-can-eat option. As we are about to order, the waitress informs us that we cannot do that, and that everyone must have the all-you-can-eat option. That's understandable--it's policy what can you do. What's not understandable or in any way acceptable is the manager's reaction and choice of words when I tried to explain my situation. I have a severe fish allergy and was there only in support of my friend. I asked if I could remain at the table and just not eat anything. The manager then said that she cannot do that and literally says "the owner will kill me" multiple times in a very loud and aggressive tone. I asked once more if there was any other option and she then says if i stayed I would be "trespassing in a private establishment". This was incredibly embarrassing and in no way appropriate for the 1 minute long conversation. On top of that, the sushi chefs behind the bar repeatedly heckled us and others. Save your sanity and go to Arigato a few blocks down, you'll actually get good service there. read more

Might've been the sauce, but it threw things off a bit. Service was not as sweet. Our sides didn't arrive until well after our mains, and one person in our group got her teriyaki chicken rice bowl after everyone else had finished eating even after we followed up with our server. And then came the bill: somehow, that same teriyaki bowl was listed twice. Luckily we caught it. We used to come here years ago for the sushi deals which never disappointed. Yesterday, we decided to try the all-you-can-eat option... holy smokes. The portion sizes were outrageous. It honestly felt like they were trying to fill people up with oversized sides instead of quality food. For example, the cucumber salad was one of the worst we've had--basically two whole cucumbers drenched in vinegar. A good cucumber salad usually has a balance of sweet, salty, and tangy flavors, but this was overwhelmingly sour and left that taste lingering all day. We also ordered the teriyaki chicken with rice, which was another massive portion--far more than one person could reasonably finish, especially when ordering multiple dishes. Then came the ramen. We ordered two different kinds, and both were extremely bland. The noodles tasted like instant packaged ramen, with very little flavor in the broth. To make matters worse, the table next to us kept passing gas throughout the meal, which made the dining experience even less enjoyable. While that's obviously not entirely the restaurant's fault, it definitely added to an already disappointing visit. My suggestion: stick to the sushi rolls. If you're looking for quality over quantity, the non-sushi items were a disappointment. If you're preparing for an eating competition and don't mind huge portions of tasteless food, this might be the place for you. read more

Our server was horrible. While we ordered our food, she had to read the "rules of the menu" to herself and us multiple times and then still had to come back to correct our order. When she came back, she told us that we had to order another sashimi, so we ordered salmon, there's a marinaded salmon and a regular salmon, when I asked what the marinade is, she said "I don't know I just work here." It's not cute, it's not quirky, it's annoying and ridiculous. I work as server in a restaurant and I would NEVER respond like that. I honestly cannot believe how terrible our experience was at Shins Sushi. We arrived at 5:30 PM for my friend's birthday and politely asked if we could be seated. We were told it would be around 6 or 6:15, which was already a bit of a wait but fine, we were willing to be patient. Instead, we weren't seated until 7 PM. That's an hour and a half after we arrived and far later than what we were told. Once we were finally seated, the food was incredibly mediocre and absolutely not worth the long wait. For a place that seems to think very highly of itself, the quality just didn't match the hype at all. What really made the experience worse was the way they handled birthdays. The table next to us got a big, loud birthday celebration from the staff, while our friend, whose birthday we were there to celebrate, got absolutely nothing. No acknowledgment, no effort, nothing. It felt incredibly dismissive and awkward. And to top it all off, while we were still sitting there, a staff member came up to us and bluntly asked, "Are you going to leave soon? I need this table." After waiting an hour and a half to be seated and spending money there, being rushed out like that was unbelievably rude. The receptionist girl was so dismissive and rude we should've left based off her service alone. Between the disorganized seating, mediocre food, and incredibly poor customer service, this was easily one of the worst dining experiences I've had. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I normally don't write reviews, but this experience honestly ruined what was supposed to be a special night. We were told the wait would be about 20 minutes, which was completely reasonable. Instead, we ended up waiting over an hour with no real updates or apologies. If the wait had been communicated honestly from the start, it wouldn't have been as frustrating. It was also my birthday, and my friends let the hostess know ahead of time. He told them "okay, we'll do something," which made us think they planned to acknowledge it in some small way. After that nothing was ever done or mentioned. Instead toward the end of our meal we were made to feel rushed and were practically asked to get up and leave because they needed the table. The sushi itself tasted fine in the moment, but after we left, all of us felt sick to our stomachs. She was amazing and attentive, and came to our table for him bringing both appetizers, wasabi, and drinks, before finally bringing the main course as well. We heard Num launch into conversation several times with the table next to us about his statistics major, but unfortunately never go to know him himself. Sushi was great tasting, terrible and I mean AWFUL service. Waited 30 minutes for water, then before our server even took our order he yells bye to co workers in the back and just walked out. We were not helped again for another 45 minutes. No one communicated that our order had not been taken and was just ignored. Had to walk up and physically ask for a refill of water twice and ask if we had a server at this point. 4 total tables in the whole restaurant so it wasn't like it was busy.
