I came to this restaurant with my family for lunch on a weekday. Inside was casual with both tables and booths. We were enthusiastically greeted in Korean. After taking our orders they brought out the banchan, which were very tasty. I especially liked the potato banchan and after seeing that we had eaten it quickly they brought out more! For food, we ordered soondubu and bibimbap both of which were great. For the soondubu, it came out boiling hot and they gave us eggs to crack into it. Galbitang was not a hit for me. It was very underwhelming flavor wise unfortunately. I did not like that the soup and meat just tasted like plain raw meat. Delicious Korean food, we were all satisfied with our meals and would come back again. I got the DukManDoo, delicious broth and relatively good price compared to the other dish prices. One thing to note at Korean restaurants is that you really shouldn't try to modify a spicy dish to non-spicy (it won't be successful) so if you see a red (likely spicy) soup in pictures and do not like spice, then do NOT request it to be less/no spice as it probably will be spicy. (Some dishes are just meant to be!) Do not get me wrong, I LOVE spicy but have friends who do not like/want spice at all. The restaurant really tried to accommodate this and did their best. I give them credit, but really they should just tell you not to modify. Also, one thing to note is that if you get the soondubu chigae the rice will come in a hot stone bowl. They bring some stainless steel bowls with some water, place your rice into the stainless bowls right away and then you can add the water into the (hot) stone bowl to enjoy your crispy rice from the stonebowl. They did not explain it to us (yes, we are Korean but an explanation was needed!) so thought I'd mention in case it's helpful to others. Overall, very good food! read more

Not sure why this place has a lot of low reviews, but me and my girlfriend enjoyed our meal at this place! We had the seafood soondubu, kimchi soondubu, and sizzling pork (forgot the real name). Both versions of the soondubu were excellent and we really liked how homestyle it tasted. We were also given rice on the side along with tons of banchan (side dishes), which we ate along with our meal. The pork was also excellent and wasn't too spicy despite its look. It was a bit oily but it still paired well with the complementary rice given. Wasn't very smoky as I thought it would taste but it was still excellent and again, very home-style feeling Korean food. Atmosphere here was good in my opinion. There is good warm lighting to help you feel relaxed and you have the option to be served free barley tea. Been a loyal customer here for years. What I love about this place is the Korean comfort dishes such as Soondubu, Gamjatang, Dolsot Bibimbap and Kongbije Jjigae. I've known some of the servers for a long time- some of them worked at Woomi Garden. My parents and my Uncle frequented this place quite often. I think about my Dad and Uncle who passed away when I eat here. Recently, had the Gamjatang and I have to say it was quite satisfying. It was really rich and a thicker broth than usual which I really enjoyed. They still provide lots of banchan and service is fantastic. The servers are still rude. Our family have been here tons and tons of time and the service has always been subpar. If the food was not so good, we would not patronize this place. I'm not sure why non Koreans are treated so abysmally here. We are not bad clients. We tip well, are not loud, and have great table manners. As an example, our server on this outing made a mistake and gave us someone else's order kimchi soup order. We thought it was odd but nonetheless we did not touch the soup but one other person in our group started on the rice. The server immediately came back and took the soup and rice servings back back and promptly served it to the other clients. This seems improper and unsanitary especially during the Covid pandemic. To make matters worse, the person in our table who had started eating out of the rice bowl had that same bowl unceremoniously taken out from under her. It was so unbecoming and rather ghastly behavior. We were in a state shock. I got the Kimchi sundubu jigae and it was easily one of the best Korean soups I've had in my life. I enjoyed it so much that I've been literally trying to recreate it at home. I've now made Kimchi sundubu jigae about 8 times (including today), and I have a VERY solid version. Like... I'm proud of my recipe. I've researched, I've refined it a bit, I've used all of my cooking knowledge to improve it... and I say all of that with the conclusion: Arirang's is still much better. Now... I'm not saying that I should be able to master this dish in 8 tries... all I'm saying is: there is A LOT of skill, knowledge, refinement, and depth in that soup. It is freakin' delicious. That's it... just go get it. I'll continue to work on my own... but I'm definitely gonna have to do a bit more "research" of my competition. When I asked for more barley tea to add to the stone pot (where the rice comes in) and she denied it telling me it will overflow. However there was nothing in the stone pot and it had already cooled down. She never acknowledged my friend even when she was talking to her. All the servers were completely disrespectful except for the lady (not Korean) who served water. I brought my friend here to experience Korean food and I was completely embarrassed with how they treated us and especially her. The waitress only cracked a smile when it was time to tip. This restaurant is located in the middle of a strip mall, next to the old Montgomery County Humane Society. There's many parking spots available in front of the restaurant shared with other businesses on the strip. We were seated immediately and placed our order. All of our dishes were good. The pan fried dumplings come with a soy sauce based dipping sauce. The tofu soups were flavorful, and boiling hot when they were brought to the table. They give you small fresh eggs to crack into your soup. Tofu soups come with a side of rice cooked in an earthenware pot, where you can eat the rice, and then pour water to make toasted/scorched rice (nurungji). The reason why I give this place 3/5 is for the mere fact that the service was horrible. Yes, we were greeted, seated, and our orders were placed quickly. However, that was it... our waitress nor any other waitress ever came to check on us. I wanted more kimchi but even trying to wave someone over didn't work. I had read reviews that the service here was terrible, but our service was great--all the staff were friendly and pretty attentive towards us. Food was delicious. Just like any "traditional" korean establishment, it's great if you're a korean...from Korea...who can speak fluent korean. Otherwise, service is pretty shoddy. I love the food at Arirang - I actually grew up eating here and think the food has gotten even better since I last came in high school. It's probably the best place to get korean stews (jjigaes) in Montgomery County and really like the quiet and comforting vibes within the restaurant. Arirang has always been known for their stellar soondooboo jjigaes (tofu soups) and will always be the star here. It's really savory, as spicy as you want it to be, and it's one of the only korean places in MoCo that doesn't taste like they made it out of a package, rather spent time to make the broth out of scratch. I also LOVE that they give you the dolsot (stone pot) after scooping out rice so that you can get nurungji (scorches rice). This is perhaps the most defining moment at any korean soondooboo house, if they offer the stone pot or not. Overall, the food was comforting and hit the spot. It's also relatively healthy, minus the MSG and sodium but if you're looking for something macro friendly and low in calorie, korean stews are the way to go. I just wish the service wasn't so off putting and selective towards those who fluently speak korean. Ive brought many of my friends here when we are craving Korean food, especially soondabu. Ive ordered the seafood soondabu and recently I ordered the kimchi and beef one. You can order it without the beef,which is what I did. This place has the widest range of side dishes and they all taste so good, my favorite part of korean restaurants. KIMCHI PANCAKE: This place is not my favorite for kimchi pancake, but its still good. Its really spicy and its a little too burnt for my liking. Though, if someone in my group wants to split it, I'd still be down to get it. SEAFOOD SOONDABU: I always forget seafood always include clams and I really do not like clams. This dish came with 3/4 clams and one shrimp with the shell. Super flavorful,unless you burn your tongue (please wait for your soup to cool before consuming). KIMCHI SOONDABU: I always get mild and it was still so flavorful with a perfect ratio of kimchi and tofu. It comes with rice in a stone pot and itll burn the rice on the bottom. I personally am not a fan, so I wonder if I can ask for rice not in a stone pot? (I'll try to remember for next time) The service is so good! One time I came here 30 minutes after spraining my ankle (food first then check out the ankle later) and they were super nice in providing me a bag of ice for my ginormous swollen ankle. Food: We ordered the Kalbi Tang, Seafood & Beef Soondoobu, and Stir-Fry Squid. There were a lot of big pieces of meat in the Kalbi Tang and the broth was nice and beefy. The Soondoobu was piping hot with a ton of tofu! Loved the texture of the tofu and and medium spicy had just the right amount of heat. It also came with a large bowl of rice. The Stir-Fry Squid had a lot going on - squid, onions, veggies, and jalapeños. I wished there was more of the squid instead of all the other stuff but the dish was still good; it was pretty saturated with chili sauce so just keep that in mind if you're not a huge fan of that. There was a good variety of banchan that was yummy and plentiful! Experience: We went on a Friday around 7 pm and there were a lot of people there. We still were seated immediately and brought menus and water. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive. The restaurant is located in a strip mall and there is ample parking. I got the seafood soondobu at medium spice level because I was afraid it might be too spicy, but I honestly could've have done spicy! The seafood comes with a variety of proteins like clams, shrimp, tofu, and etc. The pictures don't even do justice for this place because everything is in the stew so you can really see it until you eat it. The staff was very friendly and served us some hot tea and was very attentive making sure we were good on sides (which are free). I will say, be careful when you dig in. I burned my thumbs a couple of times because I kept on accidentally touching the little pot that it came in and that thing hurts like a mofo when you touch it. Even with that short sentence the host interrupted me repeatedly assuming I was picking up. I had to ask for a table three times. I ordered BBB and tea. I never received the tea. I ordered it and I asked for it again. No tea ever. The food was fine and when the waitress brought my check I told her I had questions about two ingredients I couldn't identify. I was served a warm Rice Tea at the beginning, which was just what I needed coming from the cool weather. I ordered the Haemul Sundubu (seafood silky tofu soup) and it did not disappoint. Very flavorful and well portioned. The rice was also served in a stone pot bowl and when the bottom of the rice got crispy after a few minutes.. OMG, it was delicious.
