I've been to this and other Armadillo Willy's locations many times; never by my choice, mind you, but I have been to these many times. I've also sampled many items on their menus, from the brisket to the ribs to the pulled pork. Unfortunately, there's really not much I can say in favor of the food here. The ambiance is simple, nothing special here, just the sort of ambiance you'd expect from a BBQ restaurant. The service is always very pleasant; you start by ordering at the counter, and the folks I've encountered there have always been friendly and helpful. Food is prepared quickly, but unfortunately, there's really nothing to talk about here. I agree with the Yelper who said that it tastes as though it's been cooked for 18 weeks, not 18 hours, and that at the end of it, you're left with some very dry meat. The BBQ sauce itself is pretty drab, no spiciness to it to bring out flavor in the meats. It's really pretty unfortunate because the Bay Area is so starved for a good, authentic BBQ restaurant. My family and I had a great time here. From the moment we entered the restaurant, the stuff went out their ways to be helpful. Because we were visiting with our 2-yr old son, our dietary needs were different: little or no salt-paper in our food, cooked softer etc. The staff promptly accommodated any request incl. remaking our fries. The BBQ baby-back ribs were delicious and 1/4 chicken (kids version) was moist and tender with that smoky feel. read more

Came here on a Sunday at 2pm and they RAN OUT of Texas Ribs already! C'MON MAN!!! If they ran out of Texas Ribs at 2pm, what are they going to do for dinner service? They still had baby backs available, but I always go for the meatier Texas style, which I think is better bang for your buck in terms of ribs. On their menu, they do give warning that they "will occasionally sell out" due to the smoking time of bbq, but I still think it's inexcusable to run out on a 2pm Sunday. I have had some good meals several years ago at this Armadillo Willy's, but this definitely soured my opinion of them. Most of the meats here are decent. The ribs rate a "good". Armadillo's food has changed a bit in the last few years. The beans are different, but still good, if in a different way. So yummy!!! Best bbq place i've been to on the west coast (thus far).. but i am spoiled by the south, i am sure. I got the chicken and some baby back ribs which were so goood. I realy enjoyed the chicken. They were out of brisket and the texas ribs which made me so sad cause thats what I wanted and i got there around 2pm which i guess is when they start running out. I've been here several times and let me tell you what I think: Visit number one: I ordered the ribs, pulled pork, tater tots, beans, coleslaw and cornbread.... Now, I'm not certain why.. But I was just not feeling it! I was a little disappointed by the food then and it just didn't have a "WOW" factor. Visit number 2: I decided to come back and give it another shot. This time pulled pork, potato salad, beans, and cornbread. I don't know what happened this time around but it was delicious!!! I have stuck with that order ever since! This place is now so sub-par I considered giving it 1 star, but our service was actually good and the BBQ isn't that bad. Here are my major disappointments since their recent "renovation" (more like cheap-i-nation): You do not get a side with a sandwich You do not get cornbread with your BBQ plate The willys beans have changed and the are disgusting I think they changed the mild sauce, and it tastes less-smokey to me The portions are smaller, but prices still high No more candy mix in shakes (Heath Bar was my favorite), only straight flavors like chocolate, strawberry, etc. Boring decor No more mustard BBQ sauce Basically, it is like "the Bobs" came in and told them how to be cheap, It was completely dead on a Saturday night, and now I see why. This is the best rib place in town. I use to work for this place many years ago, I have been buying their food every since. The one in Mountain view can not even compare to the SV restaurant .The one on san antoino rd do not know how to cook the meat properly. Over cooked,to tough consistently bad service. And bad cooks concerning quality of cooked meat .If you want superd,tender.perfectly cooked meat!? Go to the sunnyvale store. Nice friendly staff, Fast professional service,and great food. Not a fan of this location since the service isn't as friendly. The Hubsters loves his bbq and Armadilly Willy's does a good job with Texas style bbq. We came here on a Monday and at 8PM they were out of ribs. OUT OF RIBS!! Another time we were here, the ribs were super dry and charred. The place is great as far as food goes, highly recommend the Mac and cheese (add a little bbq sauce and it's amazing) and the corn bread muffin with the cinnamon butter. However, cleanliness isn't that great. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left (approx 30mins) there wasn't a single customer after me and the two tables that were occupied already had their food. Yet more than half of the tables had yet to be cleared/cleaned. Nor did a single staff member come of to even check on the dinning room during my visit. But, there were three employees at the register. Would recommend coming here, however you might have better luck finding a table when they are busy. read more

I would always order the 2-item combo which consists of Texas style pork ribs and beef brisket with mild sauce (yeah, I'm a sissy when it comes to spicy stuff!) The sides I would always get were the rice and the peanut cole slaw (the best cole slaw I ever have). Depending how busy it gets, I get my order in like 5-8 minutes. Each table has a roll of paper towels with hot and mild BBQ sauce The plates come with a side of BBQ sauce, which ought to be a larger portion. The ribs are very tender and the meat falls out of the bone, which is the way I like my ribs. The beef is OK. Sauce is good. As I mention before, the peanut slaw is like out of this world! The rice can do some improvement. This is the only restaurant chain that I know off that serves Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi, which is my all-time favorite cola soft drink. read more

I adore this location. There are two that I frequent, and this one by far, has excellent customer service. Everyone here is super helpful, friendly, and courteous. The food here is great....as I learned, all the food is prepared fresh on the premises (though I have doubts on their Texas tots). I've sampled a few of their offerings...pulled pork, 18 hr brisket, tri tip, burgers...etc. I love their juicy 18 hr brisket, the burgers, texas tots, and the corn salad. Willy's is alright for bbq. Not the best, not the worst. Good for a quick bbq fix given that there are not too many places for it out here. A great BBQ place & one of my favorite chain restaurants to eat at. Their ribs are tasty and the garlic fries are hard to pass up. I recently tried a black & white shake from there and they aren't half bad at all. I usually order the Belly Buster for family get togethers and have enough for leftovers the next couple of days (which is awesome). Having lived in Texas, I might be biased and a little more pickier however this spot definitely got my craving for some BBQ turkey in! I went with a group of people and most got the ribs, fries and corn bread muffin that looked amazing. The things that really stood out to me where the enhanced waters (watermelon, mango, lemonade to name a few) and the 3 types of BBQ sauces. I really loved the jalapeño BBQ sauce! It left my mouth in flames which most "spicy BBQ" don't do. I loved every bite. Maybe I should have asked but most of the authentic BBQ places I went to in Texas had a more open viewing of the meats and ability to taste the meats so you know which one you like the best before you buy it...which I really appreciated considering that it's pretty pricey. I love this place! I had a hankering for a burger and we ended up here instead of 5 guys, which is so yummers! Hubby wanted the chopped brisket and we both were totally sated. Their beans are really good, with hunks of sausage in them, too. Anywhere that has sweet potato fries is a plus in my book! They then asked if we wanted to substitute it with something else, like brisket. Well I guess so since we've been waiting for our food and already paid?? A rack of ribs with sides here cost me $21. I get a half rack of ribs with sides at Andy's BBQ for $16 and change that is cooked better with better portions all around. There was more meat on a half rack of Andy's than there was with a full rack from Armadillo. It's obvious who is getting the choice cuts. There is no comparison. The ribs here aren't that great. Safeway sometimes offers heated and cooked ribs for $7.95 for a full rack and they're about the same quality for about 1/2 the price. I only come here if there are no other options for BBQ ribs. They're not cooked all that well, but the sides are always pretty decent. It's mediocre and overpriced... and this goes for ALL Armadillo Willies... It's like Fast Food BBQ and sometimes it's more convenient. They can never compete with a real BBQ joint. At least they stopped boiling ribs in BBQ sauce. Finding it via a GPS is always tricky, but its in a big shopping area with Ross and Sports Authority. Buy some weights then go blow it on some fatty yummy pork! I get the Brisket or Pulled Pork. Spicy sauce on the side. I enjoy it. I haven't tried much else on their menu because when I crave bbq, I go for this as I know what it will taste like. I've been to 2 other bbq places and this one fills my quench but I know there is better out there somewhere. - I would prefer the slaw to be spicier than it comes. - Fries are good - BBQ sauce does enhance the flavor of the meat! Walk, order, walk, pour your drink of juice/soda, walk, sit, wait a very short time, your buzzer goes off, and you've got food. Oh, and napkins galore! Great food, big generous portions, and they have an awesome rub on their ribs and chicken! Oh yea and great cornbread! I've had better BBQ sauce but theirs is pretty good. Only complaint is that they don't have sweet tea at all and actually no good regular iced tea either, which is what I drink with BBQ, so I was a little disappointed there. I like that it's more casual. You order at the counter and then sit down and enjoy your meal without being bothered too much. Works out great for a BBQ joint. The manager walked around and introduced himself and checked on his guests, though, which is always a nice touch. Well, it looks like they've remodeled the place and also remodeled the food. Went for dinner tonight (to go) this was the worst meal I've had here. I ordered the two meat combo, chicken and ribs, the ribs had to have been from the day before because they tasted like old reheated pork grease...they were nasty, I couldn't eat them. The chicken was good though. Beans had a formula change as well, I guess, or just left over. If this is what a remodel does put it back the way it was, please. First thing to say for a fan of the old Armorwilly management is "WHAT HAPPENED!?" In the past Willy gave you a tender falling off the bone baby back. And now, it's dry, so dry that the meat clings to the bone like a wet tshirt. It's crusty too, meaning the sauce was allowed to burn up. not good. I mean how hard is it to make good ribs? If you've got a good sauce, all you need is to smoke those meats, bundle them up in aluminum foil, mid heat, seal the juices and bam! anybody can make good ribs. My friend and I mourn the old Armadillo willy's weekly. seriously, every time we pass by we say, it's a real bummer about that willy's. Since there are simply no other bbq places around, willy's has a monopoly, but heavens, it's a crime! Ribs cooked at home are a better bet, AND cheaper too (just remember to use that foil). oh, and also, the old brisket sandwich, which used to be so soft and supple is now cardboard in a bun. read more

FOOD COMA! I just got back from lunch and I think my head is about to hit my desk in a few minutes. I only had a brisket burger and some potato salad, but I felt like I ate a whole COW. This is my second time here, and the food is just "A-OK." Tried their ribs, steak, and burgers and I really don't have much say about it. No "WOW" factor nor do I have anything bad to say.
