I really hate to say this but the simple fact is that location of Armadillo Willy's give me food poisoning and there is no question about it. I am virtually sure the sauce which is dispensed from squirt style dispensers was the true source. I have to been able to look at their places since then. Gives me the heaves. read more

We dropped in on a Friday before the crowd started to arrive, around 3:30. Ordered 2 of the full slabs of baby backs and some garlic fries. Both were delicious. The fries seemed to have a little extra garlic in them (Oh Yeah!). The staff was excellent and Anthony took very good care of us. Thank You. I always prefer this AW to all the others out there. I went to Armadillo Willy's BBQ at Sunnyvale yesterday for a friend's farewell dinner. I had some stomach problem and couldn't drink anything cold, so I asked for some hot water. The cashier was sympathetic but the manager was very rude and aggressive. She insisted that they only served cold drinks and that they were not allowed to use their stove to boil water for customers, even after I explained that I wasn't feeling well. If not for my friend's party, I would have walked out right then. I have never encountered any restaurant who cares so little about their customer's well being. I would give 0 star if I could. Came here last night because I was in the mood for some BBQ..got the Texas Trinity plate with brisket, tri tip and chicken. The brisket was really good but the tri tip was a little tough. Yum! This is the first time I've been to Armadillo Willys and I thought it was a lot better than Lucille's BBQ in So Cal. I avoided this place for years because I thought it looked hokey and thought it would have yucky food like Chilis. I was wrong! The ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT ribs is only $14.99 on Mondays! That's a pretty sweet deal considering my dining partner can really grub down. It's all you can eat for the ribs and it comes with two sides and tasty garlic toast. We had the corn salad, green salad, and potato salad. All pretty good. I got the bbq chicken which was super moist and tender. I was pleasantly surprised. I snuck a couple bites of my dining partners ribs and they were great. Tender and flavorful. All the workers here were super nice too. Hopefully their food is consistently good like this b/c we'll be back! It's cute inside of here and since you order up front, you can save a couple bucks because you don't have to deal with a waiter/waitress. They just hand you a buzzer so you know when your food is ready. A hearty, tasty meal for two was only $28. Not a bad deal for super tasty bbq for two. I think the all you can eat deal on Mondays is the best! Otherwise the portion for $14.99 doesn't seem enough, especially for hungry boys. I wanna try their milkshake and burgers next time. On Saturday afternoons they have half off hamburgers from 11-4pm. And they close at 9:30pm, not 9pm like it says above. read more

I don't know what the heck happened to this establishment. I've never had a problem with the San Jose location on Camden but this place on 2 occasions has utterly disappointed me, with tonight as I write being the second time. Are these people simply letting old ribs sit for hours on end? Where is the freshness? On top of it, my Texas ribs were cold, dry and uneventful to say the least. I'm not exaggerating by any stretch. I've been going to Armadillo's off and on since I was a teenager and have never had this problem at other locations including the one on Blossom Hill. I hope the other locations have not developed bad habits like this place. My food wasn't edible; i'm not kidding. Stale, cold, gross. They should be ashamed of themselves. If the manager is reading this, if you continue to serve the heap of crap you served me tonight, your business will go down and I honestly will not lose sleep over it. Step your game up. read more

Originally I was going to try St Johns Bar and Grill but they had a power outage. Bummer so plan B . Go try Armadillo Willys out. So I arrived there and was pleased to find that on Mondays they offer AYCE Ribs . Being a Carnivore I ordered the AYCE Ribs which comes with Texas Toast and 2 sides which I ordered the Pit Smoked Beans and the Potato Salad. Place is decorated like and old barn . They have 2 Flat screen TVs going for entertainment. They have a soda fountain with free refills. The Sides and Texas toast were tasty. The Ribs were Pork BBQ ed Texas style which makes a dryer rib with a little crusting. They were ok . The Jalapeno BBQ sauce is pretty mild but tangy. The funny thing midway thru my meal they ran out of the AYCE style ribs. There were a lot of people there eating I guess they were eating the AYCE Ribs also. So I talked to the MGR and he agreed to substitute Baby Back Ribs for the AYCE. Cool I polished off half a rack of those before I called it quits. Not a bad meal. read more

I am looking for the oh-so-tender fall-off-the-bone Texas-style bbq ribs dripping with spicy and tangy sauce. I have tried a ton of different places and been severely disappointed. Unfortunately for me, Armadillo Willy's is not the last place I would visit in perpetual search for the above. The ends of the ribs were ultra-burnt and laden with carcinogenic and the beans were runny and bland. Thank goodness for the Satan's Sweat Naga Chili Sauce (containing none other than habanero pepper), for copious quantity of such on the ribs and the chili more than compensated for the mediocrity. Surprisingly good BBQ for California (I'm a total BBQ snob since I grew up in Kansas). Rich thick and sweet Kansas/Georgia style bbq sauces. Enough healthy options (5 salads, 5 different salads!) that I can come here with my coworkers for lunch and not only leave full and satisfied, but happy with my tasty BBQ Thai Turkey Salad. This is the best Texas style BBQ joint I have found in California. I usually get the beef brisket or the beef BBQ ribs. The small plate is an ideal serving size for lunch a lunchtime meal. I usually get the beef brisket prepared with hot sauce and a side salad. Dr. Pepper fans will be pleased to know that the have Dr. Pepper and and Diet Dr. Pepper. I went in on a whim and overall, like this place. My parents live in Arkansas, and I'm a big fan of Memphis BBQ, so I knew this probably wasn't going to be exactly my thing, especially in California but decided to give it a try. I went for the Memphis pork roast sandwich, AKA a chopped pork sandwich. I would prefer pulled, but that was not an option. It came with a side, so I got fries, and you can't have a BBQ sandwich without cole slaw, so I got that as an extra side. With a soda, the total was 11.50 with tax, a bit pricey if you ask me. The sandwich itself wasn't bad. Big, moist bun that doesn't get smushed, and the meat and sauce were quite good. But the cole slaw wasn't so good. They call it "peanut spicy" cole slaw. That's pretty accurate, but it's not the sweet goodness I'm used to, and putting it on the sandwich was a mistake. The fries were excellent and plentiful. They also had Squirt soda at the fountain, which is way better than any of those too-sugary-sweet drinks. Not bad overall, not quite authentic. If they start serving plain cole slaw, I could bump this up another star. read more

Looking for something quick, low key, and decent, we decided to check out Armadillo Willy's BBQ on our recent trip to northern CA. The four of us ordered pulled pork, baby back ribs, a hamburger, and sides such as potato salad, sweet potato fries, beans, and regular fries. None of the sauces were too hot, and for the most part, everyone enjoyed his/her meal. The potato salad had too much mayo, and the hamburger was bland. The biggest hit of the dinner was my drink: diet A&W root beer. Hadn't had one in a really long time, and apparently no one else at our table had either, since I went through about 4 refills. Yum. Some vanilla ice cream plopped into the drink would have been even more excellent. To get your meal, you order what you want at the cashier, pay, and then wait for the buzzer to vibrate. I was surprised that at 7 or so they told a customer that they had run out of Texas ribs, which seem to be the favorite. Kinda like a bagel store running out of bagels. [I see from another review that running out of ribs is commonplace.] Will we come back? Not likely. I don't eat pork, and I would have really liked to have a beef rib instead of my burger. read more

Kids loved their burgers and the wife had the brisket plate with the jalepño sausage. I had the half rack of baby back ribs. The ribs were a little on the dry side, brisket was good. Good bbq ribs, moist, good sauce. Sandwich is pretty decent, but salty. The beans is tasty, good cole slaw, flavorful garlic fries but artery clogging oily. Armadillo Willy's usually has coupon, otherwise it's a bit pricy. Tony Romas is another option. read more

Came here with my family tonight after not being here for a while since we no longer live in Sunnyvale. When we walked in I noticed the decor had changed which is okay since I suppose a little updating is a good thing. We ordered our food..I got a boring cheese burger with onion rings, my hubby got some ribs, kids got ribs and cheeseburgers. We get up to pick up our food and they are on these fancy looking plates like you get at a 5 star restaurant not a barbeque place. They are plastic so though they look fancy they really they aren't (think cheap). Carried them hoping the food didn't slide off and placed it in front of my daughter who quickly said "where's the basket?" I had to chuckle when I saw my onion rings were lined up on a plate like it was sushi except they were slipping and sliding and I almost lost them. The buns looked fancy and they were good and overall my boring cheeseburger was delicious but I wished I had not ordered the fancy looking but tasteless onion rings. Those were burnt and left a horrible taste in my mouth. Hubby's ribs were cold but he ate them anyway and on his fancy plastic white square plate he had a paper cup of beans which made us laugh some more. The only positive thing I can say is it was nice having a napkin dispenser instead of the paper towels. That was the only change they needed on the presentations and decor. Not sure if we will ever come out of our way to come here again. It smelled like my grandparents house after their fireplace had been burning all day and quite honestly I can't stop laughing at how stupid the white square plates were and how they tried to make the onion rings look fancy. It really distracted us from the food and that wasn't that great. Noticed five guys opened up down the street so next time I'm in Sunnyvale and want a burger I'll go there. Kinda wish Armadillo Willies stuck with their roots and not try to become foo foo fancy with the dishes. Seriously I'm still laughing about that! read more

Be careful when you order. They will ask you "what side do you want with that?" as if to imply your order comes with a side, however a lot of the dishes are a la carte. A single order will quickly skyrocket into double-digits. Shady business tactics if you ask me. NOSTARS!!! This place sucks!!! Since I'm on an "all meat diet" what better place for a meal. I came in the sunnyvale store and ordered the brisket with a side dish of beans. When I picked up my plate, portions were very small about a cup of brisket and 25% of it was fat. When I went back to the pickup station "hor-hey" or Javier gave me attitude trying to speak in broken English how I should except the plate that was handed to me because he cut the best pieces. Then the entire kitchen Staff started to chime in on my dilemma... I told him that I didn't want to argue with him but "just give me a better cut of brisket. then when my plate was handed back to me the portions were even smaller. OMG!!! don't eat here! read more

I've been to Willy's a couple of times around the South Bay, most recently at the Sunnyvale location, and they are not my first pick for BBQ or my last. I've had tri-tip, pork ribs, hamburgers, and fries here and they've all tasted decent. It has never blown me away with flavor though and never been given to me lacking flavor either. So when my group decided to come here after a Sunday morning function, I decided to gamble on the fish tacos and to my surprise, they were pretty good. My order took a while to come to me but the fish was fresh and tasty. I now have a favorite to order amongst all the mediocrity on the menu! read more

I was glad we got the orders quickly, however the prices were too expensive for the quantity, in my opinion. But I did come from Texas, so my expectations are different. I used to go to Armadillo Willy's with my older brother. It was sorta our "bonding date" We would just sit there for hours and just talk. Service is pretty good... the people that works there are very friendly. We usually order the 3-Way Combo, the one that has BBQ Ribs, Chicken, & another type of meat and we also get a side of Garlic Fries and Milkshake.
