It's a classic clam chowder, but incredibly flavorful, rich, and creamy. It has big chunks of clam, bacon, and some potato, but unlike many chowders, the clam-to-filler ratio is definitely heavy on the clam. It is simply outstanding. The staff are every bit as impressive as the food. I drove an hour back tonight specifically for their chowder and planned to try the fish and chips as well, only to discover that the power was out and wasn't expected to return until much later. I was obviously disappointed and mentioned how far I had driven. The staff were so kind that they gave me a bowl of chowder to take home and heat up later--on the house! That level of kindness and customer service is rare. We need more restaurants like Portway Tavern. Amazing chowder, wonderful people, and a place I will happily keep coming back to! I responded, "I think a Louie traditionally has thousand island, do you have that?" She did. The salad had many of the elements, most importantly a good sized amount of lump crab meat.
