The pilot light went out on my hot water heater. Lenny was prompt and professional. My hot water heater is nearing 10 years, and Lenny gave me service options of replacing the thermal couple as well as ordering a new hot water heater. I never worry when I call ARS for assistance. Everyone that I have dealt with has always been friendly and professional - from the call center, to the advisors, to the service techs. I've used ARS for over 10 years toward on-site service as well as purchase and install of my hot water heater (June, 2005) and furnace (October, 2013). read more

Overpriced. Hvac: We had them come out to provide an hvac quote.. little did we know we were in for a 90 min presentation that didn't show any models or prices till the last 10 min. Then one by one he showed us the models starting from the most expensive (17k for a tiny little place?!). He also enjoyed reading yelp reviews word by word about ars during the presentation. Needless to say we went with a different company (40% less total for same equipment) and were super happy with the choice. If you don't mind a long sales pitch and paying a premium you will likely get good service.. I am pretty sure they can do a good job based on the fact that they are Home Depot's pick. Plumbing: we had them come out for a quote and we were really pleased with the plumbers, but the quote was really high so we couldn't give it the ok. We gave another company a chance to bid and we paid 40% less for this job too. read more

I was introduced to ARS/Rescue Rooter via Home Depot as I was shopping for a new air conditioner. I have to be honest, I have very mixed feelings towards the company. When they arrived to sell me a new system, I felt that the sales person was knowledgeable. He pulled out an option sheet that illustrated the "cheaper" package. He told me that the better company packages were significantly more expensive. We asked him to show us those prices, and it ended up being $500 more for a better brand. That variance when you are spending $10,000 doesn't seem like a "significant" difference. Don't get me wrong $500 is a lot of money, but when you are purchasing something that you don't intend on changing for 15-20 years, you really do want to know your options. The installation was scheduled for three days out and the installation guys were "ok". They did a very clean job, which was super impressive and they left my house in great condition. However, they incorrectly wired my ac unit, where anytime the whole house fan turned on, the ac would turn on also. So even though my thermostat showed the ac as being off, if my fan was on, the ac was actually running. They came immediately (same day) to fix the issue. Then there was another issue, which they did end up solving, and did so same day. So was the process, flawless? No. But they did come out same day to fix the issue, without question. The reason why I am knocking off more than one star, is that the pricing on the "package sheet" the salesman used to sell me a system, was HIGHLY negotiable. I felt that if a customer wasn't aggressive in their negotiation, they would have been taken for a ride. My advice, make sure you negotiate hard and stay firm. Hope this helps! read more

We used ARS for an emergency Air Conditioning repair and, although- in the moment- we felt that the charges were very high, we did not compare or contact other companies to price check. Unfortunately, we later worked with another company who told us his rates, which were remarkably lower for the same scope of work. Additionally, ARS recommended a furnace replacement so we met with a rep to discuss our options. The rep was knowledgeable and very easy to work with- carefully answering all questions and going over options. Unfortunately, however, after meeting with two other furnace installers, ARS bid was thousands of dollars above either of the other companies we met with. ARS was, for sure, easy to work with... but, dollar-for-dollar, I think we'll search elsewhere in the future for our AC and Furnace needs. read more

Complete joke!. They will try to get your business at Home Depot! Scheduled an appointment for a furnace tune-up with the earliest window three weeks out. Given a four hour window (8-12) to come out and then THEY DON'T COME OUT. They lose my appointment and say the earliest they can come out (on my scheduled day) is an additional four hour window of 12-4. Completely unacceptable and as I was inconvenienced waiting around for four hours. Company is a joke! Stay away! read more

Called scheduled an appointment last week and got called today, the day of 10min before the tech was supposed to be at the house to be told no one was coming because they had more important calls to get to in other areas.. hmm, so my police officer boyfriend taking off of work to get the air conditioning fixed because there's 2 small children in the house is not as important as other people who called... And they could schedule something in about 10 days... This company is a joke. We went with someone else who did make time for us on a same day call and gave a law enforcement discount. Didn't look as dirty as picture. Later research online indicated cleaning of blower was typically $250-$275 in this area. Completed work and left area clean. We are totally done with ARS. We have experienced the worst customer service from ARS unlike no other company we have ever done business. They have the worst customer service department, and the maintenance personnel are totally NOT experienced. They will come in and give you an estimate without doing very little inspection. They will tell you the that you need all sorts of parts to fix your appliances when what you really need is an experienced repair person who knows what they are doing, not an estimator. They carry little or no inventory. We had a quote for almost $1000 to fix our 8 year old furnace, when all it required was a $45 dollar part. The part they put in on our maintenance contract was not properly installed. We had to call a more experienced company and they came all the way from Northbrook within in 1/2 hour from our call and repaired our furnace in less than an hour. ARS advertises 24/7 service. Beware, this is false advertisement. They will fix your appliances on their schedule at astronomical prices! Also, to make matters worse, we were told that the repair person was out late the night before and he could not make it to our house for 7-8 hours. Our furnace was out and it was dropping below 50 degrees in our house. Do not use this company. They will rip you off. read more

Found these guys at Home Depot and they came out for a $69 clean and check on my furnace. The tech told me my flame sensor and capacitor needed to be replaced. estimate was about $355. after a cursory Google search I found these parts cost about $7 and $10 and around 20 minutes tops for an experienced tech to replace. I get that you are paying for labor, experience, overhead and other intangibles but a quote like that is nothing but preying on ignorance. being that the guy had the parts on hand, and was already at my house, if he wanted to charge me like $100 for it I would have obliged. But after some due diligence I felt the company was being dishonest and wouldn't do business with them again. read more

Initially we set up an appointment to have our A/C looked at a few weeks ago. The A/C unit started working again so we cancelled the appointment. Yesterday our A/C was having issues again so my wife called to schedule an appointment. They had our information with my cell number as the contact number in their system from the prior week's cancelled appointment. My wife asked that my info be removed and provided hers when scheduling the appointment. She was given a time-slot/window of 2-6. She specifically said and re-iterated and had repeated back to her that she would not be available until after 3:45 due to having to pick our daughter up from school. Despite being reassured that my phone number had been removed from their system and replaced with my wife's, I got a call at work indicating the service tech was on his way at about 2:20 pm. Not knowing what was going on I said, "okay, sure." The service tech then called me from my home indicating he was there but no one was answering the door. I indicated I'm at work and that I'd contact my wife. This was around 2:45-3 pm ish... well before my wife indicated she would be available. With no working A/C and the house getting hotter, I initially tried to reschedule and again reiterated that I wanted my cell number removed and replaced with my wife's and was assured that had been done. I was told that until the A/C unit thawed they couldn't diagnose the problem. They said they could still send someone out but chances are he wouldn't be able to do anything and suggested I re-schedule for later in the week. My wife had already indicated to ARS that Tuesday afternoon was the only day she'd be home/available for a service call. At that point we cancelled the appointment entirely and called another HVAC service company. That company showed up, diagnosed that our A/C unit was kaput (which we knew given its age, 23 years) was a possibility/likelihood. And installed a new A/C unit the same evening. Today I received a call at work from ARS indicating a service tech was on his way to our home to diagnose our problem and asked if I would be home when he arrived. I had not scheduled a follow-up appointment. The problem had already been resolved by one of ARS's competitors and due to their lack of organization in their office they lost several thousand dollars from the sale of a new A/C unit that instead was sold to us by one of their competitors. ARS may have the most gifted and proficient technicians in the Chicagoland area but due to the total disorganization of the office staff they left a sour taste in my mouth and I have no intention of ever working with them again. read more

Never did I think I'd be giving a plumbing service a 5 star review. But these guys are amazing and I'm tossing all other plumber contacts and will only use ARS in the future. First - they don't charge you to come out and assess the issue and give you a $ quote. So many plumbers charge hundreds just to even come out. Second - you pay when the job is done. Third - Mark, our technician was thorough, professional, really tried to be Beverly courteous and clean (not easy with icky nasty plumbing issue) Mark also gave us simple & easy things that we can do to maintain the pipes to avoid or minimize future issues. Truly professional! We had another plumber (different company) come out prior, said he didn't see the problem, charged us and left. Yup - I'll be referring this company to friends, family and clients. read more

Don't trust anything they say when you call the rescue rooter main line (on the rescuerooter.com website) if your appointment is handled by ARS. Called while helping relatives with a simple kitchen sink clog and was told 1 hour and free estimate. Fine, I'd prefer an estimate over the phone for something so routine but I can live with having a guy come out if I'm not obligated. So a while later I get a call directly from ARS and now the story is quite different. We have to be available over a 4 hour window and its $40+ just to have a guy show up to make the "free estimate". So of course I put an end to it right there. Went to a great place called Rental Max in Lake Zurich, rented a rooter, and did the job ourselves for under $50. read more

The story is a little involved, but in short, both times I paid my handy man to help me get my house ready, and my ducts were never cleaned. Second time they didn't even show up. I had been seriously considering a replacement of my HVAC system because it was about 17 years old and was beginning to have a few hiccups in how it was performing. I was stopped by a sales rep in Home Dept about HVAC services, so I decided to give it a try. I opted for an entire system replacement, which was very expensive, but necessary in my view. The ARS sales consultant seemed very knowledgeable and offered various options of equipment and pricing. After choosing the system I wanted, we had the expected negotiating of the final pricing. I wasn't entirely comfortable with that process, but felt that I got a reasonable price at the end of the day. The installers, David M. and Don M. were outstanding! They were on time and finished the work much faster than I expected. They explained everything about the system and how to operate it. They also cleaned up the area after the job was done. I waited several months after the installation before offering a review, to monitor the system's performance and to compare my utility bills from the prior year for the same period. I'm completely impressed with the system performance and my utility bills are running 15% to 18% lower than a year prior. I'd recommend them to others, but would also recommend that buyers get a couple of additional quotes. It's definitely an investment that should be carefully researched. read more

If you wanted to see samples of work done by ARS, we could charge you admission here at our house by conducting hourly tours. We have toilets, a water heater, a furnace, an air conditioning unit, and an in wall heater all installed, for now, for always, by ARS. This is the company we turned to based on one solo recommendation, after (1) all of the above failed in our aging home and (2) all of our previous vendors either were out of business or didn't care about the quality and service of their business. They have been prompt and you can choose your maintenance professional. Phone services are pleasant. I can't imagine what else could possibly need replacing, and from the looks of it ARS is on our speed dial. I've been told there are so many available companies for the aforementioned services; but its pretty nice to find one that does it all. Finally, I don't just give them the high sign for their services, they also clean up after themselves, and that goes a long way with me too. read more

I had a water heater that had never had any problems. I had a contract with ARS to come yearly and check things out. They came and called me down to the basement, saying, "How long has this puddle been here?" There was water under the water heater. They said the water heater needed to be replaced immediately, and I should replace it with a tankless water heater ($3,000, instead of another typical water heater, $800.) They convinced me by saying I would always have hot water at an instant's notice. They also said the tankless water heaters are the wave of the future, and it was pointles to get the older type because it would soon be outmoded and I would need to get a tankless, anyway. I am an older woman living alone, and did as they advised. Later, I was told by a friend that water heaters have a valve at the bottom so that you can empty out the water--which creates a puddle. The tankless water heater they installed at great expense has needed bi-annual yearly maintenance, whereas the older type was maintenance free. The water takes just as long to heat as did the older type. read more

How this place gets these high reviews is absolutely amazing to me. If I could give them zero stars I would. The lady on the phone asked me what my problem was. I told her amongst a couple other little things, I needed my toilet line rodded and my sink line rodded. The guy comes over and asked me to tell him what my problems are. He then states that he doesn't do rodding and that's a different guy with their company. Excuse me, that's what the lady asked me if I needed and she sends someone that can't do the job. He then proceeds to walk around my house with an attitude as I described the little issues I have besides what he cannot do. Basically, he was going to install one bathroom faucet and fix a couple of very small other things. He then proceeds to go out to his van and return 15 minutes later with an estimate of $568. Are you kidding me do I look like a fool? He states to me that's what the plumbers book says. I told him his price was way too expensive and I had to pay him $20 for coming over of which I feel cheated. If you want to pay out outrageous more than Union like pricing for plumbing work with an attitude, then be my guest and call them. Also, be prepared to waste your time as they will have to send multiple people even after you tell them what you need on the phone. Trust me, save the headache and keep looking unless you like getting rapped. read more

ARS service Tech Dave T. complete the job on time. Technically good and a master installer. Here are my comments for improvement, there was a time during the installation that Dave T. instructed me the customer to clean the duct that he cut. A customer should never clean the duct for the installer. When the duct was about to be installed, i told Dave T. to vacuum the bottom surface but instead he told me to get his dry vac to vacuum it for him. Customer should never do this for the installer. Installer should go above and beyond for the customer. Also, when Dave T. cut the copper pipe, the water was dripping and went into my water heater he did not took initiative wiping it. I customer has to do it for him. Did not even hear word Thank you for helping me. Definitely, something to improve upon to achieve excellent customer service. ARS service Tech Brandon D. Brandon handled my air condition installation, he explained well to me regarding his work. He has patience explaining the thermostat overview to my wife. Did not rush and took his time. Also, gave me tips on how to maintain the air condition. He was sincere in conveying his message regarding the product he installed. Complete his job on time. read more

I actually toyed with writing two reviews as I had two very different experiences with ARS. I received a coupon in our local clipper magazine for a discount on an air conditioner tune-up. My husband and I just purchased our home and I knew the unit was pretty dated. At any rate, the technician Scott was very informative, and patient as he explained the different parts of our unit that required replacements. He also advised us that our unit was nearly 20 years old and had very old technology. I appreciated learning that we had the option to pay nearly $700 to replace the needed parts, and yet risk our unit breaking down completely sometime this summer or investigate purchasing a new unit. The technician Scott provided the option for a sales adviser to visit our home and provide an appraisal for a new unit and go over costs, etc. with us at no additional charge and no requirement to buy. My husband and I thought this was excellent service, so we agreed. Fast forward a week and here comes the ugly part of our ARS experience. It just so happens that the sales adviser that came to our home was also named Scott. My husband and I was not a fan of the sales adviser Scott, who asked a lot of overly personal questions to gain insight about our finances as if my husband and I were ignorant to the tactics. We totally felt like we were being profiled. Instead of going over the costs of a replacement air conditioner unit, Scott spent more time tying to push the purchase of both a new furnace and air conditioner. My experience with the sales adviser Scott really turned for the worse when he very casually and innocently asked us how much we paid for our home. He positioned it as if he was curious about home rates in my area as he was possibly interested in buying a home and he was unsure about the market area costs. Then two sentences later Scott referred to the first time he purchased a home! Which made it so obvious that he was simply attempting to find out how much we paid for our home, how much our income was BEFORE providing a cost of a new unit. Both my husband and I found this very disturbing and it left a very sour taste in our mouths. Then Scott provided the cost for both a furnace and air conditioner unit. I referenced the conversation that I had with the service technician Scott concerning the estimate being provided and stored for 30 days, to which Scott replied that he was able to offer a Very, Very, Very (yes he used 3 "Very's") attractive discount if we were willing to commit to purchasing the new units that day. When I asked him to show me with "3 Very" attractive discounts looked like, he provided a revised estimate that was nearly $1,000 lower in cost and also included a whole-home humidifier. I suddenly started to feel like I was dealing with a used car sales man! When I told Scott that given that we just purchased and moved into our home and there are other priority projects, I needed to assess how the additional expense would fit into our budget before committing to anything and would like to take advantage of the opportunity for ARS to store our quote for 30 days. Scott immediately turned stiff, and replied very coldly "OK" and started packing up his materials. He completed an official estimate form which did not include the "3 Very" attractive discount that he previously proposed and left our home with a very unpleasant attitude. This experience has left me very uncomfortable and we will not be doing business with ARS. In fact, we we be doing business with a different HVAC company that provided an estimate that was $3,000 less expensive than ARS, imagine my surprise to learn that even with the "3 Very" attractive discount how over priced the units were. read more

I love the $59 A/C check-up special. Our technician was Scott W who was very thorough and courteous. It was great to have him explain exactly what he did and what we need to watch for in the future. Scott managed to catch the dual capacitor was not operating correctly and he replaced it on the spot with no added labor charge. Best $59 ever. read more

We had a surge, or something, following a power outage on Sunday. Outside condenser unit came on, but inside fan stopped blowing. They said the board ($780) and motor (nearly $1000) were both damaged. I was skeptical about their diagnosis. They said that the board was not putting out 24v that it needed to, so the board, at least, was bad, and that in most instances like this, the module (motor) goes too. But you couldn't know if the module was bad until after you changed it, which meant we'd have to buy it to find out. Other option was to buy a whole new furnace, because ours is 12-years old. Anyway, I said let's get the board and keep our fingers crossed. After he installed the board, he could see it was putting output, but the motor wasn't kicking on. "Luckily for us," he also happened to pick the $1000 board, and had it in his truck. Then after he installed that, he said (I was at work) that it came on for 3 minutes and stopped, which meant that there was a short somewhere else in the system, and that it would cost more to find it. Suggested we consider a new furnace. We'd still have to pay for the board, regardless, but he could return the module. And possibly, we'd have to pay for another board too, if they found the short damaged it, because it was no longer putting out 24v. I told him no way I'm going to pay anything if you don't get it working, and that you said worse case was under 2 grand, and I won't pay a penny more than that. He said he'd call his boss and call me back in 5-10 minutes (I was at work). I called him after 30 minutes to see why he hadn't called me back, and he said he had good news, that after he talked to his boss, he called Trane, and that in 2018, their boards came with a switch that had to be switched for certain units, which our was one, and that now it was working. I found this sudden miracle very suspicious, wondering if they were trying to screw me out of even more money. Total cost, $1800, including $59 service call on Sunday night (we have a service plan, so we get that rate 24/7). This morning (Wednesday, July 4th, 2018),I wake up to no fan again. Don't hire a plumbing company to do HVAC work... lesson learned. Hired ARS through the home depot AC tuneup program to service/check 13 AC units. After ARS charged me $4000, I come to find that they didn't perform the services they said they did. None of the AC could were cleaned or even attempted to clean. I spent 5 hours on a Saturday doing that myself. When I called their office to ask why the services were not performed I couldn't get a straight answer. Next issue is that one of the units was completely out of Freon. Instead of pressure testing the system to make sure there's no major leaks, the tech proceeded to pump 12lbs of Freon into the system at a cost of $126/lb.....rough $1500....which leaked out immediately. Then tried to sell me the $800 pressure test and told me once they found the leak it'd be another,$1500 in Freon once they fixed the leak???? Stay away from ARS for HVAC. They're crooks. read more

Stay away... We have used Rescue Rooter for general cleanout of storm sewer lines. Even indulged them when they suggested a cleanout would provide better access to the full length of the storm sewer line (at not such a small cost). Asked them to help with a sanitary clog yesterday. Technician was very friendly and we worked the problem together from the garage. He used a spade to clean out a four inch line, however was unable to reach the obstruction (even after 105" of cable). When retracting the cable it broke in the line. Things happen and he called for assistance from two other technicians. They too were very friendly and spent the next few hours draining the line and retrieving their cable from the line. They didn't charge me for the services (which I thought was pretty "standup." They suggested a camera person come to inspect the line, and agreed, and asked numerous times whether the individual would have a router to clean the line from the basement (a much more direct access point than the garage). They even suggested "that is all he does all day." A fourth technician arrived late in the day (mind you we were told not to use any bathrooms and the water was turned off so that he could camera the line). He sent the camera down the line and identified where the obstruction was. Rather than cleaning the line, he wrote up an $8300 quote for a cleanout outside. Cited Osha and the possibility of death as the reason for the high price. Meanwhile, no water until we solve this problem. Suggested I call the office for more details - the office was closed and I'm still waiting for a call back I quickly called my friend who is an industrial plumber. He though the quote was high and offered to verify Recue Rooter's findings. He used the appropriate router to clean the line using a camera to identify every congested spot and by the time he left, the line was cleared, the water was running freely, there is not a single "Break" in the line and I am back in business. The funny thing about it is if the first technician was able to get the drain running again, he would have left and we would have felt the job was "well done." In reality, we would have had no idea that he was using the wrong router (Sparatan 300), didn't have the length needed to clear the entire line (105" didn't get him all the way to the street) and used the wrong cutter (a spade rather than a 6" cutter). There is nothing more valuable than an honest vendor (who in this case is a personal friend). I KNOW my lines are clean, unobstructed and require no major repairs. How dare Rescue Rooter use such manipulative sales practices (and scare tactics) to secure a deal. Stay away. read more

Called late on a Sunday afternoon due to a basement flooding issue. Terry arrived within an hour of the call, quickly diagnosed the problem as a failed ejector pit :-( He did not have the correct pump on his truck, but the issue was contained for the evening, so we scheduled for him to come back the next evening to install the new pump. He arrived when he said he was going to (after calling to let us know his ETA) and got everything fixed. Terry is a rock star when it comes to customer service skills and knowledge of plumbing and repairs! We will definitely use ARS again. In fact, Terry will be back next week to replace our water heater, which is very overdue to be replaced. read more

This is a dishonest company. They did a tune up for my 3 furnaces. The guy who came didn't do much of the work he supposed to do, but spent lots of time convincing me to replace blower capacitors, flame sensors and some other things. It sounded like the furnaces was about to collapse if I didn't repair them immediately. And it was in the middle of the winter. Of course, I didn't want to take chances. He gave me his "best price" of $2,856 to fix them. I kind of doubted about what he said because my furnaces were only 6 years old. So I called another company for a second opinion. The next guy did a thorough checking on all 3 furnaces. It turned out there was nothing wrong at all. No need to replace or repair anything. I wish Yelp has negative star rating. This company doesn't even deserve 1 star. read more

Finally a rooter service that says what it does and does was it says! Customer service was excellent from the initial call to the plumber completing the job. I had a very tough drain clog and the plumber had to work very hard to fix and he did it with a postive attitude throughout. At the completion, the rate was what was quoted with no games or hidden charges. This is how business was meant to be run!! read more

If they didn't stand me up, not once, but twice after having taken off of work two days in a row, I might be able to give a review of their services, but all I can say is that if you are going to call, make sure that it's on a day where you have nothing to do or else you will have wasted a day. I am livid and would not recommend this service. They were a no call and no show twice. I ended up having to call them and they gave some lame scripted apology and a coupon for 10 percent off. Don't waste your time and don't pay attention to reviews for them unless they are recent and the person has many other reviews not all done on the same day. Mariusz and Eugene were courteous and professional installers, introduced themselves and took great care to protect our floors and maneuver things up and down the stairs to avoid damage. I have no knowledge of HVAC installation, but it looks great! They did all of the things on the checklist, thoroughly and efficiently. these guys know their stuff. we called after our condenssor went on our 3000 sq ft home. received 4 estimates for a whole new system. we went with ARS due to them carrying Carrier brand, knowledge of sales man and overall value. Greg our sales rep was very skilled and knew a lot about Hvac. he seemed to go through almost robotic presentation but did know a lot and educated us on the process. The installers were awesome!! They came out (on a friday) at our request two days later to install the while system (could have come out next day). it took a full day with 2 installers and they were very professional and efficient. Gene and arnie were extremely knowledgeable very personable. highly recommend! couldn't be happier especially with this large of an investment!! read more

This company's main objective is to find made up issues at a routine service to scare you into unneeded services. For one the tech said our blower fan was to dusty and should be cleaned. They have nice trucks and neat uniforms, but they just want you to to pay. Stay away! read more
