Arsicault has a cult following ( it's in the pronunciation at the end of its name) in San Francisco . There are long lines at the Arguello street location to the Mission Bay location and not so long on McAllister street for what is considered one of the best Croissant in America. Once upon a time I taught basketball at different YMCA's around San Francisco and some Midnight Basketball. I was based out of the Central YMCA in the Tenderloin a few blocks over in San Francisco from this Civic Center Arsicault location. The same YMCA location which the song " YMCA" was written about has a so-called cult following. This Arsicault space around Civic Center was once a Scientology Center a so-called cult following. I decided to do a pit stop and go to The Arsicault around Civic Center. The Arsicault on McAllister street has quadruple more space than the Arguello street location and less lines. There are actual chairs inside with a few tables. The only draw back was they didn't have the ham and cheese croissant at the time. The items I did choose was the almond croissant which was tasty but very crumby ( not crummy tasting) also flakey and a bit powdery . The savory scone was delicious and consistent to the Arguello street Arsicault location. Although I never lived in the neighborhoods Arsicault has locations it is good to follow a global cult classic based in San Francisco. I debated on this location or the original, but decided on Civic Center since it was easier to get to on public transportation. The service was friendly and quick, and my drink was ready in less than 5 minutes. Having just come off BART, I appreciated that they have a handwashing sink outside of the bathroom. There's a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating and I found a seat before another morning rush came in. Latte: I never expect a bakery to have good coffee but this was delicious. Not too sweet and the small was a perfect size for me. Almond croissant: This is my favorite type of croissant and it didn't disappoint. The croissant was flaky but not dry, and the amount of almond paste was perfect. I love sweets and I wouldn't say this was overly sweet, just the right balance of flavors. With that being said I don't like being in this area of the city especially alone so grab and go type of situation. If you can and if you're a tourist try mission bay hours permitting. SF isnt what it used to be, and its definitely a lot sketchier and dirtier than before. making this bakery a real gem in the rough line was not too bad, and it moves pretty quick hardest part about bakeries like this is that if youve never been its hard to order because theres no menu, its a look in glass case at whats available and order. and when the glass case is long, you cant really see whats at the end. and youre supposed to order everything when you get to the first part of the case. i learned that when people add things on after it gets all confusing. the people in front of me added an item on at the end, and then for whatever reason, a bunch of pastries got messed up, including mine. so they had to regrab my lone plain croissant croissant itself was yummy. soft and slightly chewy, super crunchy and flaky crust. not overly buttery and oily on your fingers there is a ton of wait staff so thats probably why the line moves fast. though there was only 1 cashier. and so then when something disturbs the order (like the delayed ordering of a pastry) it does get a little backed up. there are some tables on the inside as well as the outside, so you can sit and enjoy your goods. read more

You can tell the chocolate is high quality which is awesome. The employees were very friendly and helpful with our peanut allergy. While there was a line, service was quick. Let me start this review by saying that my review should be viewed with the lens that this is a very hyped up product that has been called the best croissant in America. I consider myself quite a croissant aficionado, I have eaten them my whole life, a lot of them in France from gas stations, supermarkets, local boulangeries. You name it, if there's a croissant on a bakery's menu I'm pretty guaranteed to order it as a reference point for their craft. The same applies to a baguette, which is hands down my favourite bread product. Arsicault has been lauded by many as the croissants to end all croissants, but based on my experience it isn't even the best croissant in the Bay Area, let alone the country. I ordered both the plain and ham and cheese croissants and also a baguette. I ate the croissants in the store whilst I waited for my latte (which was decent, if not spectacular, but that's not what we're here to review really). By American standards, the croissant was great, not amazing but definitely above average. It was a good size, unlike the monsters they crank out at Tartine but that's where it started to come apart. As I handled the croissant I found my fingers to be quite oily and as I bit in the rich buttery texture I was expecting with plenty of lamination was eerily absent. I got the oils again, suggesting that either the butter was not cold enough when it was rolled into the dough or the ovens weren't hot enough causing butter seepage. The other thing that was missing was a lot of flavour. It was like they had omitted the salt entirely. Inside the pastry I found the middle was soft and squidgy but the lamination all around was disappointing. The ham and cheese suffered from a similar issue but the flavour from the aged Comté was sublime. Honestly, if Tartine started using that cheese in their ham and cheese it would be near perfection. Finally when I got home I got to pull off a chunk of the baguette and slather some proper French salted butter on it and what a glorious experience that was. The crust was crispy, the interior had excellent crumb structure and everything broke down beautifully combining with the delicate tangy notes of the salty lactic butter to give the best baguette experience I have had in North America. So come for the croissants, sure but stay for the baguette. They are phenomenal. Overall though I would say that the giant Tartine croissant is much better, I even prefer the ones they sell at Acme in Berkeley. I would characterise the Arsicault croissant as a good French supermarket one but nothing more. The service was fast, the line wasn't obnoxious either but it did feel like visiting a secure compound in mid-market with all the security gating stopping the spicier elements of the neighbourhood interrupting your breakfast. read more

On a Sunday noon, the lines were already wrapping around out the door at the Civic Center location, which is usually not as busy as the one by inner Richmond. The line moved at a fairly quick pace though, and didn't take longer than 15 minutes at most. People take your order as you choose from the glass display and you pay at the end. They serve coffee as well, and there was a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating options. The atmosphere inside is lively but busy. I got an almond croissant ($6.5) and it was so delicious. I got one that was fresh since they had just put out a new tray while I was deciding and it was super nice and warm. There was a good ratio of the almond frangipane filling with the croissant itself, which was very crunchy and flaky.
