Everyone at my table of four had a disappointing meal here last Friday night. It's a lovely room, service is fine, and the menu is interesting. But the chef doesn't seem to be interested in fine eating or presentation; every dish my guests ordered looked drab and unartistic, and didn't taste much better than it looked. The salad chef was asleep or uninspired, as the salad portions were skimpy, uninteresting, and poorly-dressed. (On two salads, the chef appeared to have taken a fistful of greens from a bag you might buy at the grocery store.) My gnocchi appetizer was good as was my seafood cioppino, although they suffered from the same drab appearance as all other dishes. Went for restaurant week. Delicata app was 3 pieces 1/2 inch rounds, nothing special. New England boiled dinner was horrible. Fatty meat with a variety of root vegetables soaking in its cooking liquid. Dessert was delish. The bill arrived at the same time dessert was delivered to the table! We ate in the Tavern Room (bar area, smaller menu). Very attractive space. Could use thicker windows - was pretty cold at the windows until the room filled up. Food was mixed. Roasted oysters lived in the uninhabitable region between raw and really cooked. They were more like warm raw oysters. Not good. Ordering beer, they were out of the one I wanted (an IPA) and the waitress suggested the replacement tap. Here is our conversion: Me: "Oh, is it also an ale/IPA?" Her: "Yes, it's very good. Like a Stella Artois." Me: "Ummm...no thanks." Maybe it's a bit much of me to expect the waitress to have a modicum of knowledge of the beer they are selling. Main courses - burger and Cioppino - were both good. Burger had a great char, meat was decent. Cioppino had a nice creamy tomato soup broth. read more

The bar area (yeah, I pretty much only make it as far as the bar area) is spacious and somewhat elegant, but be prepared for the typical SW Connecticut patrons who have no problem ordering drinks over your shoulder and passing money across you food. The food is fresh and tasty - we had access to the limited bar menu as well as the full restaurant menu. - the drinks are wet with solid wines and cocktails. I have been to the Artisan many times since it opened. The food is always wonderful. Last evening I found the service to be exceedingly poor. I had called to make a reservation @6:30 earlier in the day. Requesting seating outdoors although its on a first come basis. When we arrived there were plenty of tables available. Three people arrived after us,standing behind us,asked for a table outside and they had no reservations. The hostess,I believe Lexi is her name, seated the people behind us first!! Then when she showed us to our table it was right by the door and a small table at that. Saying it was an unacceptable location, she said,"let me see what I can do". This girl needs proper training and our waiter never came to ask how our food was nor were our water glasses filled as needed. Very disappointed. Service has gone downhill which is must reflect salaries being meager. read more

The ambience was wonderful; perfect in fact. But the food was rather mediocre. Had drinks at the bar first and the drinks were slammed down in front of us. The bartender wasn't trying to be rude just very unaware. The food was rather bland and not presented in an exciting way. The waitress was nice but not attentive. I was half way done with my pasta before I got my glass of red wine. She also never checked in during the meal to see if everything was alright ....and at that point in the evening it was not very busy. Dining at Artisan was a very good experience overall but the food was not the strongpoint. The ambience, service and overall scene were the highlights. I had read some negatives on the service but that was not the case for us on this night. The food was good but not great. The appetizers were stronger than the entrees from what I sampled among the four of us at our table. Risotto, tuna and calamari dishes were all solid. I believe the menu was just changed. As far as entrees, the halibut was over cooked and the pork dish was dry and surprisingly flavorless. The duck was moist but also was lacking seasoning in my opinion. New England cuisine can be bland at times and unfortunately this was the case at Artisan. I would try Artisan again but the jury is out considering its cost. read more

I recently dined there while on a work trip and had a very enjoyable dinner. We sat outside and the setting was beautiful and romantic (which my coworker, a woman, and i joked about). The butter and bread was delicious start along with my Chopin martini. We then split the ricotta ravioli and the pork chop. The ravioli was delicious and rich. The pork chop was nicely salted and perfectly cooked. Overall nice, classic cooking in a great setting. Perfect for a special occasion or extra romantic date. I especially enjoyed sitting outside on the patio the next night for cocktails and their breakfast brunch is delicious (and included for free if you are a guest at the Delmar) read more

Food, ambiance and service are outstanding at this Southport institution. We wanted to mark a special occasion for our family because our grown children are scattered geographically and rarely are able to come together at the same time due to their own work and other commitments. There were many options on the menu and everyone loved their choice. The ambiance is upscale and the tables are sufficiently separated that it was easy to have a conversation -- important when you really want to hear what everyone is saying. We have come here on special occasions because the prices are at the upper end of our spending range, but the reliability and quality of the food and service bring us back. read more

If the review was just based on the food, it would be 4 stars because it was delicious. But I'm leaving a 1 star rating because the service was some of the most atrociously bad I've ever experienced. When you spend $400 for 4 people you expect a certain level of service and they completely missed the mark. Everyone other than the bus boy who was amazing and the only attentive person. 30 minutes for the waiter to even take our drink order, 20 minutes to get drinks, and the most basic drink was completely wrong. Food came out in a realistic time. We had to flag the waiter down for our second drinks and he never cleared our initial drink glasses. At the end it took 20 minutes for them to run our check. It was a few days before the holiday so the restaurant was packed but that is no excuse when you're charging these prices. We should have gone across the street to Gray Goose for half the price and twice the service. read more

Prix fix menu for $21 per was very appealing. My wife loved the beet salad (was not too big) and a very light, thin, beautifully prepared chicken paillard. I had chicken liver mousse...simple but very good.(my wife mixed some of what i didn't get to with her paillard)....and very tasty, not to big, sliced hanger steak sandwich on pita. Delicious. We had lunch here as part of their restaurant week promotion....$20 for a three course lunch. The ambiance and space are wonderful. Service was good not great. The food however was quite average, not terrible, not srellar. Appetizers, tuna tartare and a tomato carpaccio salad were quite good.We had branzino and mussels as entrees. The branzino was undercooked. The mussels were small but the broth with bacon was good. The desserts, caramel cheesecake and a profiterol were very underwhelming. It was clear they were made well in advance and taken out of the fridge right before service. Think we will give it one more chance. read more

Beef Carpaccio was excellent, was not a big fan of the root vegetables served with the local scrod, but I was happy again with the ganache for dessert. It was a perfect night start to finish. We had an 8 o'clock reservation on the patio. The temperature was perfect, the lighting and ambiance on point. It was busy so it was clutch to have a reservation, some "gentleman" was really trying to get a reservation and the poor hostess had to nicely tell him a thousand different ways that they were booked - so - make a reservation! I had an old fashioned that was delicious and Brian stuck with beer because it's what he likes! We both ordered steak - I had the NY and Brian had the hangar - both delicious. Nothing was to prepare me for what was to come though. That little glass mason jar of perfection - vanilla cheesecake - topped with caramel and sea salt. I cannot express how poorly this restaurant is managed. At first I thought I was just unlucky, but I've been talking to many of my friends and all of them have been feeling the same way. The artisan was once the place to go, now it's a glorified mess of a restaurant. The managers are rude and uptight they have no sense of professionalism. When a restaurant charges a hefty bill, you'd expect nothing but the best. Not here, The food never comes out the way you want, One of my colleague pointed out that the food could be served at one of the diners and you couldn't tell the difference. Lastly, my good friend at my firm told me he's son once worked there part time and the stories he's told me made me sick. The managers would yell and scream at the waitstaff make them work tirelessly with no break. He told me his son would come back from work broken. All I can say Is next time you pick a place to eat, you might want to look else where. read more
