The East End of the Upper East End is a total mystery to me, so when I left a book party with the SO and her group of friends, I whipped out the trusty Yelp app for a local suggestion. There popped Arturo's a block away, so off we went. Arturo's is a white-sauce, Northern-leaning Italian in the tradition of other "New York City Italian" eaters (in some cases, dinosaurs). The service was old-school but not fancy, and the food was about the same. I had the meat tortellini served in a cream sauce, a starchy dish I rarely get. This time, it soaked up a previous gin martini (laced with absinthe) nicely. The prices are steep given the good but not great quality of the food, but if you live in the neighborhood, this could be a place glad to have you as a regular. What a neighborhood find. They took us at the last minute, prime time, on Saturday night and couldn't have been more gracious. The service was attentive and unobtrusive and the food was delicious and well prepared. We were given just the right amount of time to look at and discuss the menu and each course was timed well. We shared the perfectly fried calamari with a tasty marinara sauce and the bread was nicely warmed. The 2 fish specials were excellent--the pan seared bronzing which came with a lightly dressed bibb salad and roasted potatoes and the grilled salmon in a heavenly, light cream sauce, fresh sautéed spinach and those wonderful potatoes. We could taste the coffee in the cappuccino and the Italian cheesecake was both delicious and beautifully plated. And loved the free cookies. Next time, pasta. read more

Came in after an event at Gracie Mansion. Amazing service and the food was excellent. My veal francese was so tender and delicious. Great side of pasta cooked to perfection. We intended to go to the Korean restaurant next door, but it was closed and we decided to check out this place instead. The ambiance is lovely and candle lit. One thing to note is that there's a 19.95 per person minimum, we weren't really hungry and planned to just get an appetizer each, so we had to order a third appetizer to meet the minimum. Just moved to the neighborhood and tried this restaurant for the first time. The sauce on the chicken parmesan was too sweet, and the sauce on the ziti was too bitter. It's not very encouraging when an Italian restaurant can't get the sauce right. Wish I still lived in Brooklyn. read more

Tonight we enjoyed and shared wonderful entrees such as the Artichoke Chicken, Veal Sorrentino, Chicken with Sausage & Peppers and fish special. It's a true old school Italian restaurant - it actually opened in 1982 and has been there ever since! Usually the owners are eating at the bar, and know everyone there. The bartenders know the customers as if they've been there since it opened. Sept 8 2019 Sorry to say, the new bartender (after Chris) is very difficult. As has been noted in other reviews, he is unfriendly. He actually asked me to leave after one glass of wine. He clearly was trying to open up the bar seats for the dinner crowd. I talked to the female owner and she said "i just got here and don't know what is going on." This is not the kind of respect customers deserve. Before me, another female customer complained about the bartender's attitude and lack of service. There is a reason why this restaurant is going out of business. Customer service should be a priority. Sorry to see them go. read more

When I lived in the nabe more then 15 years ago I used to eat at the pizza place of the same name (and owners) across the street -- which I loved -- then swore off. I always thought I'd go to the restaurant one day, y'know, when I had a little more folding cash. Well, tonight I did. First it's listed as "American (new)" in Yelp -- C'mon Yelp, get you shit together! This is an Italian restaurant. Like they-only-have-Italian-food Italian restaurant. Second, I'll never eat here again. W-w-wait...not because it's bad, but rather because life is short, and I live in New York City -- where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an Italian restaurant. And also I now live nowhere NEAR this place. I live in Brooklyn, so a bunch of you can probably just stop reading this now and go to the DAMN RESTAURANT!! Third, this place is kind of a NY stereotype. Which can be great, I mean I love a red-sauce joint, but if I'm going to consume this many carbs, and that much oil and what not, it's got to be pretty darn good. (That said, red-sauce restaurants are like Chinese take-out places...you tend to get accustomed to the flavors of the restaurant that's closest to your house.) Fourth, it was a little pricey. One entrée, one pasta, a salad, and four glasses of wine was well over a bill. For what it was, it was a little much for a Monday night. Fifth, the food you ask? OK, this is peak local tomato time. Like they're-giving-them-away-because-in-two-weeks-they'll-be-gone time. But the tomatoes we were served were hard and tasteless. So to you that's either an abomination or no biggie. This is a special place to say the least if you're looking for a tasty meal with an upscale and sophisticated atmosphere. Very kid friendly, and the food is beautifully executed. I live right around the corner, and I definitely grew up eating here. My parents are there every weekend, andI I've certainly had some milestones in my life celebrated in the downstairs. I've been here several times with a date, and I've found everyone who works there, especially the waiter, Marco, and one of the owners, Josephine, to be warm and accommodating. Last night, we called at 9, and they told us to come on over; no wait at all, and our choice of tables. The food is hearty Italian fare with rotating daily specials. The wines are reasonably priced, and there's a nice balance of reds and whites from which to choose. I am in love with the gamberi alla parmigiana (shrimp parmesan) dish; the shrimp are cooked thoroughly, and the sauce is tasty. The five stars I'm giving Arturo's should be understood in context; this isn't a trendy spot with some celebrity chef, rather, it is a neighborhood gem with consistently delicious food and gracious service. PS--I might dock them half a star because their bread is a little too crusty for my tastes, but that's nothing that drowning it in olive oil can't cure... read more

We were looking for old school Italian, and we found it. Small and quaint restaurant a little bit out of the main craziness of Manhattan. Attentive, friendly service with out being overbearing. Kind of odd crudites were provided, carrot sticks, celery sticks and olives, but hey, was free. Lasagna was good - nice portion without being too much. Carbona was good, although a bit over sauced. The BEST chicken parm I have ever had! I've passed by this restaurant for years and never gave it a second thought. It looks like a run of the mill old school Italian place. My neighbors went for dinner and posted about how much they enjoy it there, and since I trust their opinions, my friend and I decided to give it a try. It didn't disappoint! Really great food. Stoppes by NYCEWheels across the street and wanted to have a nice mealnwith my wife. They participate in restaurant week, 3 course meal for only $35. They have a full bar. We actually came in thinking it was a pizzeria, much to our dismay it was not...The waiter was not attentive at all, it was clear that he cared for the other tables because they were regulars..or at least had been there before. Never again will I order in. The worst. Ordered chicken franchise. Mediocre at best. Was told the vegetable was cauliflower. Took the pasta. It tasted like $.33 a box pasta with catchup over it. The bread was just thrown in the bag. Crumbs were everywhere. No butter. Went in the next day and spoke to the nastiest bartender ever. Topline: Unfriendly service, dismissive owner stuck in another time, not child/family friendly. Food is fine but many other yorkville Italian restaurants that are REAL Italians who know how to treat people respectfully. My experience: I've been to Arturo's many times when grabbing a bite in the neighborhood prior to becoming a mom. My husband and I decided to have our baby's post-christening brunch there. It was a convenient location from our apt and it was always an easy go-to. From the moment we made the reservation you could tell they didn't want us there. First, they said you have to sit in the basement. That was fine. Second, they told us we could do family style which would make things nicer so people could try everything (they thought we were being cheap which we absolutely weren't price was never a concern) then a week after making the reservation the managers calls basically scolding me telling me "no family style no family style". I could barely even understand him. So I said fine. Then I call to make sure we can request a highchair (two other guys told me we would get them but I didn't trust the manager) and of course, he says no no we can't guarantee that. Then, I speak to the owner to confirm that this will all work out and he was just as rude as the manager. Instead of even listening for a second about my concerns or trying to help he immediately defended his manager of "30 years" telling us we shouldn't eat at the establishment if we weren't comfortable. Parents, I would stay away. Women, I would also stay away apparently this is 'the good ole boys club'. We had to cancel our daughters christening lunch less than 2 days before the event. I have lived around the corner for years and have gone by this place hundreds of times, and somehow never went in. We decided to try it at the last minute and were very pleasantly surprised. Its a good old fashioned Italian restaurant with all of the old world charm that that implies. The wine list is fine and doesn't break the bank. The food was just like mama used to make, and they are very flexible in tuning it to what you want. The portions are big. I had a sole and it was huge, the vegetables were not very imaginative, but the pasta with clam sauce, and the bolognaise were very tasty.
