Not impressed with my second time at this restaurant. The first time I came here the place was packed, the food was good and the service was decent. This time I came with my son after his soccer practice (Saturday). We got there a little before 10:30 and we were served our food at 11:30...I ordered a big breakfast and bacon and eggs for my son. The waitress who took my order finally sees me about 45 minutes later and says it will be another few minutes..15 or so minutes later a waitress hands me a plate of pancakes and that's it, 5 minutes after that the other waitress brings over the rest which was wrong, my son wanted bacon and the plate had semi-runny scrambled eggs and two sausage links I go to exchange my bacon with my sons sausage in front of the waitress (after I told her of the error) and she didn't even bat an eye, and says enjoy...I go to pay and the cook is running around trying to complete the orders while my waitress is standing near the register with customers waiting and doing nothing...service: not professional at all, food: barely fair. Staff was friendly and the food was delicious. I was in town visiting family so my mom decided we should get breakfast after I arrived. Great place, great service, awesome breakfast. Went on a Sunday morning around 11:45. I had the Farmer's special and was very satisfied. 3 egg omelet stuffed with cornbeef hash & onions and "real" homefries (fresh potatoes). Ashley was in East Hartford for over 30? years on Connecticut Blvd but a Walgreens took over the corner so now she's a star on Main Street Hartford (almost a year now) - right next to the Hook n' Ladder Restaurant and the fire house. Ashleys was a great stop! In the beautiful city of Hartford, there really is not a lot going on in the food scene! Ashleys is one of those brillliant holes in the wall that has a great story! Ashley (her American name, I am sure) has been in the business for over 30 years! She was the only one there when we first came in. She seated us, served and cooked our meals. Great omelettes, french toast with cinnamon! Good food, but her stories were worth it! Also, free street parking on the weekend. Make sure you stop by! read more

Find somewhere else. One of the daily specials was grilled cheese, fries and soup for $6. Decided I was really just hungry for a sandwich and I ordered a grilled cheese with ham. Ashley made the sandwich, plopped it on a handful of chips, walked to the register and charged me $7. I handed her a twenty and said "$7? I guess I should have ordered the special." She said "You want soup?" and I said "Sure." While she got me the soup (no choice, she selected), I picked up the menu and read that a grilled cheese with ham was ... $5. I told her. She repeated "oh, it says $5." That was that. No apologies, offers to refund my money. Nothing. I should have demanded a refund, but I took this as a $2 investment to help other people avoid this place at all costs. I should note that the grilled cheese was average. I gave it four stars mostly because it's one of the few options open in the deserted streets of Hartford on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Streets are pretty empty and kind of scary. Colleges must have been closed because there were no students on the streets. Seems like the only thing open was a deli and what looked like a drug rehab center. Found two Dunkin' Donuts and both were closed on the weekend. Had an event at the convention center and if not for breakfast at Ashley's, probably would have just stayed in and had a hotel breakfast. This is better. It's a typical little family diner with the usual options for breakfast. Eggs came out perfect, home fries a little greasy, but the friendly people made it all better. read more

Insulting and unsanitary. First the toilets had pee all over them and dried on so it hadn't been cleaned in some time. They never washed their hands. They do not accept cards and have not documented this anywhere. Instead after eating I pull out my credit card and was told to use an atm. I explain it's credit only. The middle aged woman asked to see it then question the amount on it. First off it's none of her buisness however I was fine with letting her know considering it was well more than she pegged me to have with her beamy eyes. I was then questioned when I worked and she then said a buisness credit card ya right. Apparently the words buisness was confusing for her since it was written right on there, and had my name. They never thought I'd have one. I'd stay away no wonder after 20 something years in Hartford this is my first and last visit. read more

Service was very slow and it wasn't very busy at all. We waited for 35 minutes for our food when other people got their food in under 10 minutes. Once we finally got our food I got white toast, instead of wheat, which I ordered. My friend's sandwich was soggy. Home fries weren't worth it at all, barely cooked, and the toast was barely toasted. We made a comment that the potatoes weren't cooked and the waitress said nothing until she walked away and said "wow" under her breath. We asked for a refill on OJ and the waitress took our cups and brought the same ones back; we didn't know whose was whose. read more

Oh Ashley's, I had extremely high hopes for you. While I understand that a group of high schoolers is obviously a disturbance to your service on a Thursday morning. Surely, you cannot be used to that many customers in a very short period of time. In retrospect, I apologize to the one man sitting in the corner trying to enjoy his breakfast before work. However, I was disappointed overall with your restaurant. Being in the city, I expected the prices to be a bit higher than what I'm used to in suburbia. When first looking over the quite limited menu, the prices don't exactly scream 'be terrified'. Upon realizing that pancakes only cost about 25 cents to make, charging 5 dollars for a short stack of 2 is a bit extreme. As someone who frequents diners (especially those in Jersey who have gigantic portions), twelve dollars for two eggs, two pieces of bacon, two pancakes and home fries is nothing short of ridiculous. On average, your menu prices were two dollars over what any regular diner charges. I ordered a monte cristo since I wasn't really in the mood for breakfast (you do get extra stars for having lunch available at 10 in the morning). I've had my fair share of Monte Cristos' (it's a staple in my house) and I can tell you that yours was average. In fact, I could have made that same Monte Cristo in my own home which is not what you want when dining in a restaurant. It was nothing special; American cheese and ham on plain white bread barely dipped in egg and pan fried. The fries were decent but obviously frozen beforehand. I have an issue with restaurants using frozen fries considering I'm paying for someone to give me something I could have done at home and fresh fries take a total of two minutes to make. Overall, a small, basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a five fries on the side should not cost $8. I also ordered tomatoes added to the sandwich. I received one dinky slice which cost $1 extra. No matter if I got 5 slices or just the one I actually did receive, a $1 extra for tomato added onto a sandwich is ludicrous. Soda was also expensive and came in a small cup similar to a Dixie cup. The soda ended up totalling $2.00 with no refills. Soda costs on average four cents to make per 8 fl ounces. I ended up ordering a milkshake as well which was tasty but also came in the same small cup and added up to $3 dollars. I don't understand how a milkshake, which costs so much more money to make than a soda, costs only a dollar more at your restaurant. It's honestly beyond me. At the end of the meal, my friend and I were ready to pay. Since I had looked up the restaurant beforehand (I do with every restaurant), I knew that this particular restaurant does not accept credit cards. I had a feeling this was so since it was obviously a small business, but my friend did not. She was forced to use an ATM in the restaurant which charged her a three dollar fee. I understand that having a credit card machine costs extra money for the business owners. However, it is 2014 and many people use credit cards for purchases. I have a feeling, and looking at the reviews I am right, that many guests go through the same hassle. In order to keep and make repeat customers, you really should invest in a credit card machine. I'm sure your business would almost double. In addition to this, our waitress was a sweetheart. However, she did mess up much of our order. She brought my friend, a vegetarian, a chicken noodle soup she did not order. My other friend ordered a chocolate milk that she never got but was charged for. I do have to say that whoever was cooking was doing a phenomenal job and meals came out super quick. However, the checkout system was completely twisted. The guest tells a separate person their order. The person then charges the person. There is no security for your business since a guest could frankly lie about their meal. Unfortunately, you can't rely on people being honest. Easily, someone could say they ordered something cheaper than they actually did or leave out that they ordered something extra. Many diners have it so the guest must pay at the front but the guest usually brings a receipt with them. There was no receipt which is also a big problem for not only tax reasons but for the restaurant owners. Without receipts, you cannot trace what food is being bought and used. This means if you have a loss prevention problem, you have no way of figuring out what happened or who is stealing from you. This is a basic rule of business and restaurant management. Overall, I enjoyed the quaint atmosphere of the restaurant but I will surely not visit again anytime soon. read more
