I had never given this place a second thought until someone recommended it to me! It's a pretty small store loaded with tons of baked goods. I actually did not feel very welcome when I walked in, but service was fine. I just quickly ordered, paid, and left. The Napoleon is really good! It's very flaky and not toooo sweet. I also got the mini fruit tart and tiramisu. These three items combined were over $9. I wish they would list their pricing - none of the tags have pricing, although I supposed I could have asked. We came in looking to try a handful of their pastries and sweets to see if we liked any enough to serve at a party. We wanted a wide array, and their selection is so beautiful! The flavors are unexpected, to say the least. Their chocolate sponge cake had a berry-flavored cream in the middle, for instance. A different all-chocolate cake was soaked in coffee. Not a little bit of coffee, either -- really, truly soaked. I like coffee, but my fiancé does not, so that was not a welcome surprise. Their tiramisu was good, but again, swimming in rum and coffee at the bottom. I can handle those flavors pretty well, generally, but even this staggered me. One of the best pastry places that I've ever tried before. The Napoleon cake was 10/10. The Napoleon cake was rich and creamy. I especially loved the thin layers of the Napoleon. They definitely add to the crunchiness of this dessert. Oh man the cream and the pistachio flavor in it was so delicious. My favorite one is the cream horn. The cream horn was 9.5/10. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly assisted by a lovely young lady. On my first visit I tried a variety of their mini pastries: **Tiramisu: love at first bite!!! I will definitely take that 12-mile drive to get a cup of this DELISH cake! It's so moist and not too rich. **Napoleon: flaky and so yum. My 2nd fave!! It's a layers of puff pastry smothered with creamy custard. Must try!! **Lady fingers with custard filling. Not sure of the name. It's good but not one that I would get again. **Mini strawberry cake: bite size strawberry cake with layers of chiffon cream. There aren't that many places that focus on middle eastern dessert places in Irvine. This is centrally located in the same plaza with the persian market and caspian. All the stuff is great here. Oh my goodness, the best I have had in a LONG time. The young lady who helped me was a gem, so friendly and helped me decide what to get. I tried a chocolate eclair, cream puff, Napoleon cake slice and assorted baklava. Each was incredibly delicious but the Napoleon was probably my favorite. Despite that, don't let it stop you from enjoying one of the best chocolate eclairs I've had in a while! Most things in the bakery are sold for less than $2 each and seems to be made with a delicate, artistic hand. Pastries have that terrific medium between flakiness and softness, making each thing I've tried delightfully tasty--especially the silky sweet cream inside the eclair! The chocolate fruit tarts exhibited this type of perfection too. As for the bad service, I came in with my sister and wasn't addressed or acknowledged. When I asked what were the best selling desserts, they simply pointed without looking up from their phone. That fruit tart really surpassed all my expectations! The fruit was super fresh, the glaze delicious, the creme was milky and the cup was crunchy, just WOW. The Napoleon was great as well! I've had the one from Euro Caffe and I can't decide which is better, but seems to me, the one here at Assal is creamier. One day I was sitting at work and thinking to myself what I should eat. Then a glorious idea came to mind... I should have cake and wine for dinner. Hey, I am an adult and I have a history if making bad dietary decisions so why stop now? Yes, it's nice to be an adult because you can have chocolate cake and wine for dinner (and nothing else) and no one can say sh!t about it. The prices here are fairly decent... I was able to buy 3 pieces of their cake for about $5. And you need to try their chocolate cake, especially when having some good red wine. It's heavy and very moist but not too overly sweet... I could eat a fistful now. I can imagine getting chocolate all over my mouth like a ravenous animal feasting on a recent kill. Their coffee cake is wonderful too. A nice hint of mocha flavor that doesn't overpower your pallet. Perhaps you would just like to admire the layers that it has and stare at it like a beautiful woman or a car. I can't believe I've never been in here before, but then again, not being a dessert fan, who could blame me. I was happy to see some nicely done up trays and arrays of cookies for the holidays. I also got some baklava for hubby, him being the one with the sweet tooth and all. Super delicious cakes! This is my new go-to place for birthday cakes. I got the banana pineapple fruit cake and it was a huge hit! Everyone at the birthday party throughly enjoyed the cake. It's a super moist cake but isn't super sweet. The almond slivers and the fruit toppings are amazing too. I got the square cake ($30) and it was the perfect size for 8 people.
