Oh Athens Pizza. I have such nostalgia for you. Having grown up in Atlanta I remember coming here decades ago. After so many years it was time to check up on this old Atlanta classic. The reunion was bittersweet. On the one hand, Athens has undergone some major renovations since my last visit and appeared to have a much more modern interior. And our waitress, Magdalena, was simply superb. She could not have been more attentive, helpful, and kind and we greatly appreciate it! We also thoroughly enjoyed our salad. It was fresh and flavorful with a delicious Italian dressing. After so many years apart I had to try one of those classic pizzas from years past. Visiting New York so frequently has turned me into a purist, and so I went with a classic cheese pizza. It was decent, yet somewhat disappointing. The style was deep dish, and there was certainly adequate amounts of cheese. However, I was unable to taste the sauce and I wasn't a big fan of the cheese flavor. It seemed to have some kind of a buttery coating on it that just didn't do it for me. The pizza was hot and fresh and I can see why so many people still love this pizza. But the combination just wasn't a winner for me and did not compete with some of my other Atlanta favorites. The french fries were crisp and flavorful but more of the "steak fry" variety, which I find to be a bit too thick for my taste. Perhaps I will return and try some of the many other dishes available here. They have countless Greek dishes ranging from Gyro's and skewers to various kinds of pasta's and soups. They also specialize in different kinds of veggie pizzas. But alas, for this Atlantan, Athens Pizza will always be about the pizza. And while the pizza came up a little short for me, this place will always have a special place in my heart. read more

I made it my mission when I moved here to find amazing Greek Pizza--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I can't stop thinking about this pizza! I am so ready to go again. I definitely love to start out with a Greek Salad...the medium Greek salad is a great split for 2 pre-pizza. It is a simple salad wrought with pleasure. The only way it could have given me more pleasure is if it came with more than just 3 calamata olives--the best part and there were only 3! Once that piping hot pie of sexiness hit the table, I was in love. The way I do my pizza...pastrami, tomato & extra sauce. For those of you that are skeptical, pastrami is the perfect topping! Just try it! They are probably the only pizza joint around here that offer it as a topping but not unusual in the Greek Pizza world. My server tried to steer me away from ordering extra sauce because they like to warn folks that it might make the crust soggy--useless warning--the extra sauce had my toes curling in saucy joy! This was always one of our mainstay delivery spots pre-COVID. We usually order the Athens special pizza, which was okay this time but sparse on cheese. Luckily we had some mozzarella in the fridge to doctor it up. The salad however was not at all okay, as it had clearly come from the freezer. Lettuce and tomatoes were frozen solid. Guys, if you don't do enough business to sustain having fresh salad ingredients, please just take it off the menu for now. This would've been a two-star review but the spanakopita and baklava were both great, which earns a third star. read more

Prices are very reasonable, and this restaurant is frequented by a wide variety of locals, Emory students, families, and fans of Greek dining. I am a fan of the Pastitsio (how can you go wrong with beef, pasta, and bechamel sauce?). And the Mediterranean Pizza is a winner (gyro meat on a pizza FTW). I want to try the Athens Special. Great pizza place! The aesthetics are nice, and although it was very busy on a Saturday night, the workers were quick and efficient. Norma was our server, and she was pleasant to work with as it was our first time being there, thus having a ton of questions. Only downsides have to do with the bathroom being dirty and the fact that there is no changing station. Other than that, great place! read more

Went there on a Thursday. First time there in 40 years. Yes, forty years. When I lived at home with my parents, we would go there and have Pizza. I graduated high school, went to college, got married, my parents moved away, and I never got back to the area. I work for myself and had to go nearby and saw the Athens Pizza was still around. They did move a bit closer to N. Decatur but its real close to the location I remember. History has a tendency to improve things. I wasn't a salad eater back then but the 3 of us shared a medium Greek salad and it was good. We had the Athens special pizza and added pepperocini instead of the Jalapeno peppers that I love. I remember the high crust on the pizza being delectable but I also remember the crust under the pizza being not quite as soggy. The Bride and the Daughter had a dessert and thought it was wonderful (I'm not a dessert person), I wish that I could remember what it was. The Daughter had a glass or 2 of wine and the Bride and I had beer. When I go out to a 'theme'" restaurant, i have whatever countries beer. They had 2 Greek beer listed but was out of one. Still good choices. I do remember it being different but 40 years does a lot to your memory. The food hasn't changed much. The atmosphere there is better than I remember than it was when I was 15. This place is legit. It's always busy and I now know why. The food quality is solid. I did not understand how Greek food and Italian food went side by side. However, all of the food meshed well. We were greeted at the door and walked to the back to place a to-go order. The restaurant was pretty busy and the phone was ringing a lot. There was a large table being set up in the back and a older woman watching it be setup. It seemed like everyone knew her there and provided her with top notch attention. She was speaking Greek to one of the Managers working. (I later realized that she is one of the owners...I think!) Food: My husband had the lamb shank, Greek potatoes, and salad. It was HUGE! He said that it was very flavorful. I had an Eggplant Parm sub with fries. The sub was HUGE! It has green bell peppers on it, which I was not expecting, but it was a a nice touch. We ordered our food to-go, and it smelled so good in the car we couldn't wait to dig in when we got home. My husband got the chicken fingers and fries, which tasted very good, the chicken fingers were cooked perfectly. I got the greek style oven baked chicken which came with green beans and potatoes. The chicken was VERY dry, overcooked and not so great. I picked at it, and my husband ate the rest. The green beans were yummy, but the potatoes were bland and oily. We also got the spinach pie, which was ok. In the past I've had their mousaka and pastitsio which was VERY good. Their greek salads always hit the spot, and their meditterranean pizza is delish. Our favorite spot for work lunches. Staff is friendly and meals are delicious. Our go to is two meat platter with Athens potatoes and extra tzatziki sauce. My family has eaten at Athens Pizza for years. Most of the time it's fine, but when we get takeout, it its never as good as eating in the restaurant. This evening, we ordered takeout: a gyro platter, a chicken wrap and a Greek salad with grilled chicken. The salad was literally brown and translucent with old chicken. It was inedible. It had clearly been made days and days ago and sold to us this evening. The chicken wrap was also filled with brown lettuce and had soggy pita with old chicken and slimy onions. Clearly it had been made a long time ago and then sold to us this evening. The salad that went with the platter had the same problem. The only part of the meals that would be eaten were the Athens potatoes with the wrap and the gyro meet from the platter. Choose another restaurant. read more

I wish I had liked it more!! I really really wanted to. I lived in Columbia, SC for 3 years where there is a very large Greek population and this just... isn't it. I was here with my ex and service was lacking. Our waitress could not understand what we were saying when we wanted to order just ktipiti and pita and we had to explain it 3 or 4 times. She did bring it out correctly, but it was very frustrating to begin with. I don't remember what the ex got, but I think he was decently happy. I got a small greek salad, and a moussaka and pastitsio combo platter that also came with a small piece of spanakopita. There was also some garlic bread served that was just okay. Here is where I had a problem: all the food was very obviously reheated. The spanakopita was shriveled and soggy- I have microwaved my own homemade spanakopita before and even that didn't look as bad as the one served to me. The pastitsio and moussaka appeared to have been servings cut out of a pan of the larger dish judging by the square shape of the food, and although they tasted fine, again, they were obviously reheated. Whether they were microwaved or placed in the pizza oven for a few minutes to warm up is not something I can discern but they were very obviously not freshly prepared. I also much preferred the pastitsio to the moussaka. Also worth mentioning that we were some of the youngest people in the restaurant. Just an observation. read more

Athens Pizza in Decatur is one of my very favorite restaurants on the planet. For real. Now, before you read further, let me tell you that much of my LOVE for Athens can be traced to the wonderful dates my husband and I had there in the 80s (ahem!) when he was courting me. We even went to Athens for a late lunch on our WEDDING day. :) Lots of wonderful memories. Athens is family owned and very traditional. Great Greek dishes (the best gyros you'll ever have, wonderful Greek salads, baklava, etc.) My favorite thing to eat there, by far, are their pizzas. The crust is always PERFECT - not too thick, not too thin - a nice crispiness to it, but soft as well. The toppings are always generous and delicious. Every other pizza PALES in comparison. Love this place. I've gone from eating there as a starry eyed teenager, to a middle aged woman going back with my husband and our 2 (almost grown) kids. I look forward to one day introducing my grandchildren to Athens. (And by the way - we no longer live near Athens Pizza - but it is ALWAYS worth the drive!) Wonderful! read more

This is a preliminary review as I have only been there once (but intend to go back) and tried only a couple of things. I thought I should write a review nevertheless because I did find the place promising and because I am the self-proclaimed Greek-food authority around here. First the place is easy to find, there is plenty of parking around, and is fine in term of decor (not TOO many greek flags and Santorini pictures). The service is very good. But then you got to go up to the counter and pay. What's up with that? This is so 80's Greek dinner... Another little remark: the Greek wine list is pretty good (not excellent but good - try the Moschofilero, if you want to get a taste of a Greek grape) but served in tacky overfilled wine glasses. To the food: I got the avgolemono soup and the spanakopita app (two triangles). Great for lunch or light dinner. They were both pretty good. In fact the spanakopita was VERY good. I thought that their feta cheese was a little too salty but most people don't consider this a problem. I also ordered a the moussaka + pastitsio plate to go (for my sig other at home). I had one bite from the moussaka and it was very good. But the bf told me that the pastitsio was not as good. The salad which came with that plate was a sorry excuse for a Greek salad (lots of lettuce, a couple of thick cut tomato pieces and some feta sprinkles), but the dressing was very good (I used it to make my own salad at home). The pizzas that my friends got looked very good (and they liked their taste). I would like to try some other dishes next time (like roasted chicken and potatoes and youvetsi). But I will not try anything with gyro (I know it'll be bad). PS. Another reviewer said that Greeks know their cheesecake? No, actually we don't. Cheesecake is not only a non Greek recipe, it is also very foreign to Greek cusine and Greek taste buds, so if other Greek restaurants make a mean one, that is probably a talent unrelated to any Greek source read more

Athen's Pizza is one of my most favorite places to eat. With their large selection of items on the menu, you immediately realize they don't serve just pizza. I have yet to order any item which I did not totally enjoy. From their Greek salad and Chicken Parmesan Sub to their Combination of Mousaka and Pastitsio. And, of course, their pizza. Everything is authentic and delicious. You will find Athen's Pizza to be very different from your typical pizza restaurant and if you enjoy Greek food, I am sure you will really enjoy dining here. read more

I have tasted all the specialty pizzas, and I love all of them, especially the Santorini Special (with the Feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, spinach, fresh garlic, artichoke hearts, and black olives). Though this place tends to get a negative vibe due to their atmosphere and sometimes sketchy service, and, more importantly, the way their food seems less restaurant-y and more of a lunchroom type places (they use plastic plates and have a real diner-style decor), I think in the end they get underrated. Their slice is richer than most any other place I can think of in Atlanta, so if you're looking for that Greek style rather than the more popular thin, dry slice, Athens is is the place to go. They have a pretty awesome Greek salad, that in its full size portion alone can blast your belly. Their tiramisu. Damn, their tiramisu. The last two times I've been here we ate a whole slice of it (it's huge) and then ordered another to go for the car, and ended up eating with our hands in the car. I'd come here just for that. O. M. G. Athens Pizza is my new favorite pizza joint in Atlanta. My ethereal face-stuffing session kicked off with a Greek salad. I usually dog salads that comprise iceberg lettuce, but this salad got away with it because the dressing was so light, tangy and refreshing--and the tomatoes, olives, feta cheese and red onions made up for what the green roughage lacked. Now. On to the pizza. The bread itself was so buttery, soft and smooth--but not soggy! It melted in my mouth. The cheese was perfectly greasy, yet not so much that it upset my stomach or saturated my plate. The toppings, pepperoni (slightly crispy and curling upward), salty black olives and feta cheese, rocked my palate. The sweet tea was perf, too, along with the bubbly waitress: Deborah. The dessert case whispered sugary nothings into my ear when I walked past it on the route to the restroom. You can't go wrong with the Athens Pizza House greek salad and the customary basket of cracker...always the right temp and good for anyone on the lite side of dining. However, the bill arrived...the gal offered to go get the spinach pie that she forgot...we politely declined. Lukewarm coffee in the customary cup and saucer and the non-customary napkin to soak up the spilled coffee from the hurried delivery and little issues with liquids and Newtons law. Again, it's a sad way to see a family established biz falter from being over capitalized from all the assets the family has rightfully accumulated; when the property and buildings bound back in value and the business still thrives...it's a business no longer needed to struggle, sacrifice or go the extra step any longer. The same guy that sat us was back at the register to take the check, ask for the amount without any banter, chatter or opinion....he just doesn't seem to give a damn. That's allright, I'm starting to read reviews here in which long time customers appear to likewise, "no longer give a damn." And that really is a shame. Time marches on. My colleagues and I met here for a farewell party before I moved, and the service was horrible. There was a table of about 10 of us and the food seemed to come in waves or just whenever the kitchen decided to send something out. I can assure you that no more than three people had their food at the same time and the result was that some were eating appetizers when others were eating entrees and others were still waiting for their food when some were eating entrees. It was a cluster fuck. The food was Greek, pizza and pasta, and was tasty, but service was a mess. Two of my friends got their food so late that the kitchen just comped it. read more

Some of the best pizza on the Emory area. This gem is always consistent. The Greek cuisine is scrumptious. The baked pasta dishes are delicious as well. I love the pizza here. The toppings and crust are so flavorful and reasonably priced. You must save room for dessert or get it to go. The usual Greek desserts are offered. But they also offer decadent, mile high cakes. The strawberry cheesecake has plump and juicy strawberries. The cheesecake itself is light and airy. And the crust is made of vanilla cake, which is a huge bonus. If you're ever in the area and in the mood for Mediterranean cuisine, this spot is a winner. read more
